Title: GSA LC 2015 - serious shaking
Post by: OomD on August 16, 2016, 12:25:31 pm
Over the last 2 weeks or so my bike has developed a serious shake on the engine, such that it feels like the whole bike is being plucked left and right. This only happens on low RPM, and mostly while kreeping (i.e. not really while stationary).

BMW seems to think it may be the throttle body potentiometer(s) that is uncalibrated/faulty/sticky/whatever, and I have it booked in for Thursday for them to check it out. But, I've noticed it definitely is only while moving, i.e. the propshaft is turning. I don't know if it's related though, and it doesn't necessarily feel like the shaking comes from the back. In fact, the shaking is definitely related to engine turnover (feels like the pistons are pulling it sideways) and not to wheel turning, but only happens while moving. As soon as the revs or the speed goes up she's smooth as butter again.

Has enyone had this happen to their's before?

My 1200 LC also shakes like crazy when under 20KM/h........... but only after fitting new more aggressive tyres. (Heidenau K60 )

Agree, I also experience that with off road tyres

Also experienced that with Karoo 3 tyres - what tyres you have on OomD?

Interesting... I just had K60's fitted...

Previously had Karoo3 and also Pirelli Scorpio Trail, bike was smooth as butter with those...  even though the Scorpios seem way more aggressive than the K60's...

I have exactly the same thing since putting on the K60's!  glad you mentioned it.  Price you pay for decent offroad capable tires.   :thumleft:

OK so Bavarian's conclusion is that it is due to the "offroad tyres" I fitted (the K60ís), even though I previously had Karoo3 and Pirelli scorpio trials, which are much more aggresive. But then, they say it's not because of the thread pattern per se, but more because they are radial ply tyres, or something like that. Anyway, it is slightly better after they reset all the adaptations, but I suppose that could be in my head.

Anyway, I don't like the shaking so my next tyres will be back to Karoo3ís.

Still good feedback. I just got a puncture (again) in my new Anakees and with the rainy season imminent it is time for aggressive tyre. K3 it is then. Dankie Oom.

I'm curious, what tyre pressure are you guys running on the K60's?

I was running 2.5. On Bavarian recommendation I went up to 3, and it has reduced the shaking. Not eliminated it completely, but reduced it. I'm actually considering selling this tyre, and going back to Karoo3 or Pirelli. I don't like the shaking.

Interesting...  Max front should be is 2.5 and rear 2.9 - that is per the Hidenau website.

I'm leaving mine on until after my 10 day trip in October but also looking forward to changing back.  Ive got an almost new set of Anakee 3's that I changed out for these.

Pitty, i had read so many good reviews prior to buying.

Bavarian got stock yesterday of the Karoo3, so I went and had one fitted. The shaking with the Heidenau just irritated me too much.

What a difference, it's like I'm riding a new bike. Perfectly smooth, what a pleasure to ride.

Try this method as explained by Charles of the BMW Club Cape to reset throttle bodies, it should smooth out the engine.  Maybe this also influences the shaking

Talking about resetting things: on the boxer motors you need to reset the throttle-body control after disconnecting the battery.  The symptom is very rough idling.  Here's how:

Turn on the ignition, but do not crank the engine.
Slowly turn the throttle from zero to full a few times.
Start the engine.
Done.
