Title: The quietest race in the world. (Sasol Solar Challenge)
Post by: TheBear on August 24, 2016, 07:19:30 pm
The Sasol Solar Challenge will start at the CSIR in Pretoria during the morning of 24 September and finish at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on 1 October.    The route is about 2000km, but it is expected that the reigning world champions, the Nuon Team from the Delft University in the Netherlands, may do as much as 7000km!

24 Sept:  CSIR Pretoria to Kroonstad Hoërskool (Blouskool) - Sleep Over Blouskool Hostel.  Control Stop at DP de Villiers stadium, Sasolburg.  Optional loops to Deneysville and back.
25 Sept:  Kroonstad to Maselspoort, Bloemfontein. - Sleep Over Maselspoort Resort  Control Stop at Roads Office Theunissen.  Optional loops to Winburg and back.
26 Sept:  Maselpoort to Forever Resort, Gariep Dam - Sleep Over Forever Resort.  Control Stop Chuch Square, Edenburg.  Optional loops at Edenburg toward Trompsburg, To Be Confirmed.
27 Sept:  Gariep Dam to Graaff Reinet - Sleep Over Urquart Caravan park.  Control Stop Middelburg.  Optional loops in the area, TBC.
28 Sept:  Graaff Reinet to PE (Finish at Kings Beach, Overnight The Willows).  Control Stop Jansenville.  Optional loops Jansenville to Klipplaat and back.
29 Sept:  PE to Sedgefield - Sleep Over Lake Pleasant.  Control Stop Humansdorp.  Optional loops Humansdorp to St Francis Bay and back.
30 Sept:  Sedgefield to Swellendam - Sleep Over Municipal Resort.  Control stop Langeberg Mall, Mossel Bay.  Optional loops Mossel Bay to Brandwacht and back.
1 Oct:  Swellendam to Cape Town (V&A Waterfront) - Zandvlei Holiday Resort.  Control stop Caledon Spa and Casino.  Optional loops to Genadedal and back

Exact times for arrival at control stops and finishes are difficult due to the optional loops the teams can do to ad daily distance.  For instance, during the 2014 race, although the stages were roughly 250km per day, the top team from Delft University, the Nuon Team, did roughly 600km per day, using the optional loops very effectively to their advantage.

About 3 or 4 years back I was driving from East London to PE when these guys came from PE driving to East London. Well, I first thought it was an alien ship coming in to land. The front view of these cars is mind boggling. I had no idea what the heck I was seeing. Only when it was about 100m away did I realise what it was.... ;D

Nuna 8S, the Nuon Car from the Delft University in The Netherlands, arrive at their base in South Africa.

These guys are like a F1 team in terms of budget, organisation and everything else.  Amazing to watch.

So am I.  I absolutely love the idea of the company and hope they will be successful.  Not just in the race, but also in their business plan.

They only have to finish to win their class though as they are the only entry in the Sustainability Class.   ;)

Wow. Wondering how they get dispensation to drive on public roads, albeit quiet roads :)

Before allowed to participate they do a full roadworthy and must pass.  They are then homologated for daylight use in SA (or the country where the race takes place) and will be registered and get a license and license plate.    They will be on roads like the N1, R21, R24, N3, R59 and the N2 a lot of the time.  All legal.   :thumleft:

Trust me, shadow is the arch-enemy.  If you stand next to the car for a selfie and the shadow of you selfie stick falls on it, they rush over to ask you to move.

The Nuon team from Delft University in the Netherlands are the reigning world champs.  Have been six times.  They are like an F1 team in their organisation and professionalism.  They arrived here a full month prior to the event.  Part of the team drove the route to check for bad patches, safe overtaking spots, etc.  These guys have a mobile weather station on route with them.

Can you believe the Challenger Class cars weigh just under 200kg, batteries and all!  Hard to believe.  The 6m2 (maximum allowed) panels on these cars cost a cool R1m!  Not your average solar geyser stuff.

They have shared roads with other stuff all over the world, so should have experience with trucks and stuff.

Ja.  Imagine that.  A whole car, with more than just one battery, lighter than a GS.  Scary!   :laughing4:

May I use the excuse that it is dry weight?   :imaposer:

The technology on these things are amazing and the jump the last ten years was astronomical.

Sirius X25, the car from NWU (Pukke) was flipped by unexpected bit of wind during time trials at Zwartkops Raceway today.  The driver was not injured, but the car badly damaged.  The team will do their utmost to have it repaired by Saturday morning.  The CSIR chipped in a workshop and all the other teams offered help.  Lets hold thumbs.  Sirius X25 is, arguably, the best South African entry.

They repaired the car and finished a very credible 4th overall and 1st SA team home.  To understand this achievement completely, you had to be there.  This is no Sunday school picnic.  The NWU team deserves us taking our hats off to them!

So, the final results:

FINAL RESULTS:

1. Delft University of Technology - Nuon Solar (Netherlands): 4716.7km
- Broke the distance record set by Tokai University in 2012.
- Broke the world Record for distance covered in a single day, 758km.
 2. Tokai University - Tokai Solar (Japan): 4544.2km
 3. Kecskemét University - GAMF Solar (Hungary): 4033.2km
 4) North West University - NWU Solar (SA): 3524.9km
- Excellent effort after an accident caused severe damage to their car two days before the start.
 5. Lodz University of Technology - Lodz Cruiser (Poland): 2817.8km
- The only Cruiser Class entrant.
 6. Tshwane University of Technology - TUT Solar (SA): 2120.3km
 7. Near East University - NEU Solar (Northern Cyprus): 1635.1km
 8. Maragon Olympus - Solar Eagles (SA): 1378.1km
- The only school team due to the withdrawal of the International German School.
- Beating UJ is a great achievement. (School beating a Varsity)
 9. University of Johannesburg - UJ Solar (SA): 1337.9km
 10. Zingbug - ZingCO EV (SA): 1108.5km
- The only Sustainability Class entrant.
- Very proud of the fact that the managed over 1000km.

Anadolu University form Turkey did not finish.  They had a horrid time starting with political crap in Turkey, their car's departure delayed, the arrival in SA delayed, problems with customs causing it to not be able to be scrutinised and licensed in time.  As a special dispensation they were tested and licensed at the end of the first day in Kroonstad.  They passed, but from then on, Murphy and all his family rode with them.  If it wasn't for bad luck, they would not have had any luck.

The Deutsche Schule, Johannesburg, didn't start as their car could not pass the dynamic scrutineering and couldn't be licensed for road use.

The Mangosuthu University of Technology did not arrive and never started.

The private team from Irene withdrew days before scrutineering.

This was the first Sasol Solar Challenge (4th in SA) that Wits University and KZN University did not enter at all.  KZN was sorely missed as they finished 12th in the World Championships in Aus last year.  One spot behind NWU and certainly a very good team.
