Title: Yeehaa sorted!!!ktm 690 cutting out, advice pleae...
Post by: Altie7deLaan on September 06, 2016, 09:17:56 am
Hi

I have a 09 690 which have developed a cutting out/stuttering issue:

When bike is cold, it sometimes cut out when trying to engage second gear, the moment you close the throttle and clutch in, it dies. It will fire up straight away again with the starter and idle perfect.
It is also stuttering when hot when you come down from top gear on overrun, going down the gears for a corner, and basically the moment you open the throttle it will stutter for a second or two , before it clears it throat and fucks off.
Have tried the side stand switch  bypass, this is not it.
What do you guys reckon, apart from torching this a bike?

Have you tried the 15 minute idle reset?

Have you tried the 15 minute idle reset?

And the throttle calibration.

Did you just have it serviced?

Definitely do throttle calibration and then 15 minute idle reset.
Engine MUST be cold before you start.

hi all thanks for the advice.
bike shims was  done and hydraulic tensioner replaced with a manual jobbie.
I have done a 1000km since service and only started misbehaving now.
Have not done the throttle cal and idle reset. Ever.
Start with this then?

I had a similar problem and the 15m idle thing worked for me, make sure to follow the steps of how to do it (sounds silly but there is steps online somewhere, follow it exact :-) )

My 690 is doing the same + after idling at a robot it will also cut out if you try to pull away without blipping the throttle every few seconds. Had at Raceworks and the diagnostic machine showed TPS input values low. Have to book it in next week and hopefully it will be fine after some adjustment. If not a new TPS costs about R1600-00 :o

Last week I did the throttle calibration and 15 m idle reset.
Only had chance to take the bike out last Sunday, and took it for a proper ride out from ct through sederberg and wupperthal.
Bike was running faultless until I reached Mooreesburg on my way back, where the bike died.
It would swing the starter but not firing at all.
Eventually traced it to one of the wires on the coil, lug sitting properly on pin of coil with no corrosion, the wire insulation was still pinched in the sleeve of the lug but the wire core was broken off the crimp lug completely.
I hope this was the last straw. I am going to solder the wires unto the coil and then do some spray plastic coating to prevent corrosion and build up.
Also found the plug cap wasn't screwed tightly to the HT lead anymore.
The throttle cal and idle reset most definitely sorted the stalling and stuttering issue, but I have had this intermittent cut out problem for some time now and hopefully the coil issue was the problem.
Thanks for the advice, appreciated.
