Hi To answer some questions

We wanted to create a race/adventure for plastic without the expense of full Rally kit. This event is about learning the pros & cons.
Ds bikes up to 800 should be OK - there are some tight sections etc...
Temp Competition License available but arrange with info@westerncapeoffroad.co.za  BEFOREHAND - regulations to be published soon.
There will be refuels under 60km for plastic.
The routes so far are constantly varying in terrain - they are stunning!

Only Camping at Race HQ as in pictures (hot showers too)
Catering & bar is sorted
Adventure for support crews & friends   - adventure bikes welcome to come camp/spectate for weekend
Pictures up at WCOC FB   (see link earlier in thread)

Will post more as we go along
Enjoy Tankwa

Tankwa X Country Info - getting loads of questions

Background:
For the first time WCOC hosts a standalone event, the Tankwa X Country GPS Navigational, essentially a new style of Off-Road.
The idea is minimal marked routes in order to test the competitor’s ability to READ the terrain, to interpret the route direction & confirm direction via provided GPS maps added to competitors riding skills adds to all round ability (EMPHASIS on reading the terrain).
An event to explore the opportunity to take off-road / enduro bikes & quads closer to GPS navigation. Wanting to create an adventure experience for spectators, crews & competitors is an important objective. At the same time building a long term relationship with the region’s wonderful community.
For the first year we have decided to consolidate by keeping the routes in close proximity and to make navigation a little easier in places. So far the routes are stunning with a wide variety, however you could imagine to be in another country adding to the adventure.
GPS:
Only simple products are required such as equivalent to Garmin Fortrex, Etrax 10, 20 & 30 with which the routes can be uploaded (can be wrist or handle bar mount).
Bikes & Quads:
Any Off-road/Enduro Bikes 125cc & up will do. Outside refuel & service point will be 60km or shorter. We are not yet 100% sure of total race stage distances but approx 250-300km or equivalent in normal off-road race time.
Rally Bikes are also welcome.
Entries: MSA License holders or one event licenses which have to be taken out beforehand info@westerncapeoffroad.co.za
Provisional program:
21 Oct Afternoon 30km Time Trial. Optional but will determine front starters positions.
22 Oct Main race sections
23 Oct Reminder sections.

Race Control HQ & Bivouac:
Riders Briefing – COMPULSORY 20H00 Fri 21 OCT.
GPS coordinates as in above poster.
Accommodation – Camping at Race Control with ablutions (minimal fee). Bring your own lighting but no load generators please, just camp fires under the brightest stars.
Catering at Race Control – Food, Braai packs, braai wood, refreshments & licensed bush bar.
Cool drink & water table with a light snack available at Middeldrift outside Refuel/service point.
Please support the caterers – great value & well priced.

Etiquette Please:
It is utmost important that we respect the Tankwa people & their property.
We do not ride anywhere, farm roads, veld, even though it looks baron or unused to us.
Not jetting, dragging, wheeling or riding around on bikes/quads whatsoever, regs will state when machines need to be impound.
Use water sparingly.
We all take our own refuse home.
When we depart we leave NOTHING behind - only our tracks on the marked routes.
MSA Regulations & Entry:
To follow shortly, In the meantime start your planning, bring some friends & enjoy the adventure.

Any other local WD’s going to give this a bash? Clive’s changed the setup in that a GPS is no longer a necessity to complete the event, all the corners will be marked. This is primarily to avoid damage to the little vegetation that exists in that area with riders taking corners wide etc.

I’ve very keen to give it a go on the 690. Not going to race to place but rather just enjoy the opportunity of riding in a beautiful & unique part of the country  :thumleft:

Thanks Brett  - Started this with a long term plan, engaging with the farmers, sjoe.... it takes a long time BUT they are GOOD People ! Cornie Taljaardt (Chairman of Tankwa/Hantam farmers union) with whom it has been amazing to work with. He too is working on the buy in of landowners for next year so we will have lots of distance aiming to start at Tankwa Tented Camp thanks to Henk Van Niekerk. For now we have great tracks, we are putting up 4 x donkey showers this weekend. Cornie has also put in two more showers in the old house (we supplied a donkey for that - thanks Anton vd Berg, haha will see if mine work this weekend).

We hope to enforce the GPS  next year by pulling more direct routes.

In future the renovation of the house will provide an ideal stop over for DS BIKES too, ideally situated between Calvinia, Wuppetal, Tankwa, Middelpos & Sutherland.

I must add that it has been an absolute pleasure dealing with the Northern Cape Local authorities SAPS, Traffic & Disaster Management - all sorted thanks !!!

Please support & help get this off the ground - Adventure/DS bikers come spectate/camp for the weekend R100? camping fees go towards farmers renovations & campsite. We are donating the showers & equipment that they can use going forward..... lets look after our riding future.

Enjoy

Thanks for the feedback Clive, I like the idea of a long term plan with the farmers and possibly additional dual sport places to be able to camp over at  :thumleft: Just a pity this race date is so close to the start of the Amageza otherwise I'm sure we would have had a few of the Rally guys keen as well.

Could you please confirm if the link to the online entries is working from the clubs web page? At work I get a firewall message and from home on my iPad it just times out on that link. thanks  :thumleft:

Agreed with dates however somehow Amageza were not in the annual clubs meeting when we planned and submitted dates in August last year for 2016 - like we have just done again for 2017.  We try take to all Nationals & Roof dates into account etc...

Tankwa X Country update
FB Pictures show Race Camp progress with showers near completion and two showers with toilets functional in main building. Huge thanks to Anton vd Berg, Cornie Taljaardt, Louis & Renaldo Van Wyk and the team of helpers!

Important for 2016 you will NOT require a GPS (optional) as there are areas we have had to mark to prevent riding on grazing or eco sensitive areas. We cannot have lost competitors randomly riding across fields after a wrong turn or lost visibility of tracks (some sections are marked pulling the lines). It is of utmost importance to stay on the routes, which consist of tracks & river beds or where it is peg marked across fields linking routes. Deceptive dangers are marked with triple stickers.

Tracks are arguably of the best we have set to date, with an amazing amount of diversity, if we look after it, 2017 could see the distances more than double starting near De Mond trans Tankwa to current venue where a GPS would be necessary. Competitors are in for a real treat starting with an optional Time Trial on Friday afternoon.
The TT starts out in a thorn river bed, over sweeping canals before heading up into the western mountains with several ravine and mountain sections.

Saturday will be at early start 20km away on race section A. Service crews will have drop competitors with bikes before 7:30 and evacuate back to Race control (RC) or spectator points. (impound closes at 7:30 & no vehicle will be allowed to enter road leading to start impound after 7:15). Long range bikes may ride to start.
Race section A -+ 60km of unique terrain some twisty veld, hill climb, pan, sweeping tracks, a flat out section and river bed before returning to RC. Compulsory 30 min Decontrol.

Race section B -+110km. Again varied terrain -+ 55km to outside DSP (Designated Service/ Refuel Point). This is also a Spectator and Service point where crews an assist their competitors (+-15km via road). Light catering will be available at this point. Heading back to RC for -+50km the route will include the TT section.

Sunday Race Section C -+110km will be a repeat of Race section B however starting at RC. It was envisaged to run Sec A in reverse however it is not possible due to the sections that are already marked which could lead to confusion. Competitors will enjoy it even more a 2nd time around.
Racing could be concluded by lunch time with prize giving – there is also a Rally class.

Hi Guys,

Tnx Brett, Dave & Co for support - like anything,we like to finish what we started .....Its been a busy year & would have loved more time but no excuses. Our group have been burning midnight oil to get done & we are nearly there.
Wish I could enter (officiating instead) but, just before dark yesterday ran Loop A. The loop is nothing short of exhilarating !!! had the Raptor 700 on song.
Ran out of light on Loop B and turned back however - it is excellent and has everything to test all round skills, if not racing at full pace one will get to see so much. Going up for the day tomorrow will log loops A & B so we can send out the files.

We have also marked dangers & enough to manage without GPS.

ENTRIES CLOSE TONIGHT,  mail me for manual entry form   info@westerncapeoffroad.co.za     all details are up at WCOC website.
Admin will close & move to Tankwa on Wednesday evening - thereafter no or little coms
Possible late entries Friday evening only - NO ENTRIES ON Sat your bikes will need to in the impound by 7:30 20km away.

Enjoy the experience

lol.. im on it..

Im not keen on paying R200 just because I cant get a letter from my medical aid in time but I have requested it

I normally would have done this on the Transalp but I think the 450 will be good although the front suspension is all wrong so ill be like a snail compared to some of the okes.. thankfully you don't need a GPS because I smashed my ram mount in the quarry when a tree jumped out infront of me and attacked me.. it was very traumatic

Murray & all you guys entering - THANK YOU

MSA red tape is one thing many of us still working on, but insurance etc ... is a must.
More important you will get more than just a race ...

Drive safe & see you up there

I'm in. If all goes well I'll be there with the rally bike else the 300. Once the GPS tracks have been sent out it is my intention to create a roadbook for the event to make it a bit more like a rally.
See you all on Friday  :ricky:

What is your preferred format (gpx, kml, gdp)

What are you using to convert to Roadbook (RallyNavigator etc. ?)

A few pics , David Thomas on his Dakar bike , to say that he won is bit of an understatement , the Buff who by the way was the only 690 in a race that was much more suited to the 450's , and Riki Mans who will embarrass a lot of guys .

Fuzzy Muzzy , Murray had a hard time over the weekend but persevered , way to go bud you are a star , and then of course the result of trying to get too much out of a flat tyre

And of course life can be such a bitch at times , especially when the extremely likable and down to earth Dave Thomas offered me a ride on his Dakar Bike , the Husqvarna 450 Rally , and it is awesome  :thumleft:
