Title: Amageza 2016: Its Time To Race!
Post by: Camelman on November 02, 2016, 03:05:52 pm
Hey guys,

To all of you going to race, see you in Upington Saturday evening for the opening and briefing for Stage 1! For those of you who would like to spectate, here is the first map. I will make some more maps of the other stages and post here as well. If you are at one of the bivouac towns, and you come per bike. Let them get hold of me, and I'll make a plan for you to come scope out the bivvie. We cannot let you hang around at night though as we pay per head for everything! If you do go to one of the spectator points, your GPS should be able to route you there. Please take care and don't get hurt. We have no extra medics to assist. You will be on your own. The resources are for the guys racing. Please stay off any Jeep track around a spectator point as you will have a competitor up your nostril sooner than you can say duckwalk!

We will also have a moving map display with the competitor trackers displayed. This will go live soon as well. You won't be able to see the marshal and aircraft trackers. Please keep in mind that the trackers sometimes go AWOL. This means that the location gets held up upstream of the server. Eventually it comes through and the rider jumps a couple of km's up the road. But PLEASE DON'T call the OPS phone. She is monitoring all movements and will alert me sitting somewhere under the wing of a Bushbaby (Yes, my Gyro is still broke) waiting for her call to go find the lost lamb. Enjoy it guys. This one is going to be epic!

Julle ouens verdien groot respek :thumleft:

Here is the entry list in with the numbering in chronological order and the malle moto guys in blue. They the 15 guys who are not going to be doing it with any team or outside assistance at all.

You will also notice that the 450's start with No 1 and the bgger bikes like the 690s start with No 101. The only quad is 301. Looks like no cars this year. Total of 46 entrants. Hopefully everyone gets to start. I got a learners licence this time round just in case they don't like my Peruvian one! My bike is even legal. ;)

17 big bikes and 26 450's so the lighter bikes are being favoured. Will there be enough open space for the bigger bikes to dominate? I think with the shortened stages and looping nature of th rally we may find ourselvs in more technical terrain than last year.

27 KTM's will be racing and 12 Husqvarnas. Then comes the Yamaha;s only 3 of us excluding the quad. One Honda, one Aprillia and one BMW. So a nice, on-sided mix which is not that surprising really.. ;D

Looking at the names, there are some really fast guys in this one. The top 10 of each set of riders 1-10 and 101-110 are mostly the guys came in the top 20 last year. This will be the group to watch. Then there will be the race within the race. The malle moto guys, who most if not all I believe have entered the Dakar challenge as well. The winner of this group will be getting a free ticket to the Dakar.

Then my favourite is to follow the slower guys who do the most amount of riding in the worst conditions, the ones who come in at 2 in the morning to start the next stage less than 4 hours later.

Watch Hentie Hanekom, winner 2 years back.  He is 114.  So, the top 10 of each set is not the end-all.  Also weird is Joey.  #109, but he is on a 450.  Rudi Tour Neethling is back on a Honda XR400.  Will be interesting to watch after years on the big machines.

More Spectator points.

Please read the notes at the bottom of each image.

Guys, please, please stay off the race route. No matter how fast you think you are, these competitors are insanely fast. If you should fall on a Jeep track, and you are trying to pick up your hog, you are going to get trampled.

If this spectator thing works out, we can do it in future again.

Enjoy!!

So let's make it interesting.
Who do you think is going to win?

My Top Three:
1. David Thomas
2. Roger Kane-Berman
3. Hentie Hanekom

and Malle Moto (because they are the real riders)
1. Donovan van de Langenberg
2. Joey Evans
3. no bid, unsure......

Finish ratio: 80% - Though the numbers are low this year, I think the quality of the entrants is high.

My top 3:

David Thomas
Hentie Hanekom
Chris Ogden

Yeah, go Chris!! He's riding my 'old' bike so he's definitely going to podium  O0

Malle Moto I have no idea - there's a bunch of foreign guys in there. I'd say Joey because he's been training so much but he may be taking this one very steady to avoid injury for the Dakar. Stay away from the fn cows/kudus/unicorns, mate!

I would really enjoy seeing Chris do well, he deserves it.

So far we have:
  • Go into sandy section, break chain, turn towards nearest town to get chain repaired, get lost.
  • Break chain again, same day nogal, make it to friend in closest town, get lost.
  • Go straight at (unmarked) turn in roadbook (not his fault), somehow carry on for ~150km, run out of petrol, get lost.

I would really enjoy seeing Chris do well, he deserves it.

Agree.  Remember, Chris took stage 1 outright last year before everybody protested.  He has also been racing a lot at national level this year.  Only thing keeping him back will be the terrain:  it looks slowish and technical and short (he will be on a RR).   This year looks to be the perfect time to bag a finish if you are an ordinary mortal and also optimal for a 450 lite set-up.

I also can't quite figure out how the new tracking works  ???

I just looked at a replay from 13:00 to 16:00 and from the replay it looks like they only did about 4km and then returned ???

As soon as the guys finish they get taken off the projection list. Peter How showed 2 days 8 hours and Roger 2 days 15 hours. Estimated. It will hopefully make more sense tomorrow. They did 2 laps of the same route today so it looked a bit haywire.

Had a rough day.  Was at the Parlotones concert last night, came home this morning at 0200.  At 0630 had a WhatsApp from Alexander to ask if I was willing to pre-run the time trial.  I assembled the CRF450X that I replaced the top-end of yesterday, changed a front tire to arrive at the start at on the prologue at 11:00.  It is pretty tight with lots of opportunity to wrong slot.  Important today will be to ride at a pace that allows you navigate with direction changes at the 50 - 100m marks.  It is also really important not to follow the guy in front, because if you get 200 m off track, it is very difficult to find it again with the numerous foot paths. Was about 26km.  Lots of haak-en-steek if you venture off track.

Some random thoughts;

Peter How is in my opinion the better navigator and if not blindingly quick is consistent. Roger can "kane" itm but has already made a mistake and has had to back track losing a lead that he had and is now having to work his way back to the front. But, no rally was ever won on the first day.

Willem du Toit in terms of outright speed is probably one of the fastest desert riders but is prone to taking a detour or has been plagued by mechanicals.

Donovan van de Langenberg is crafty and has great mechanical sympathy.

Greg Raaff has a pedigree doesn't make a lot of mistakes and is on a great machine.

Chis Ogden has found he has a gift for rally racing and navigates for a beginner exceptionally well.

Looks like the three musketeers came together again.

Because of a very poor prologue, on Rudie's side, he started second from last. He has now caught up with Gerrit and Claude. Maybe they took it easy for him to catch up, maybe he twisted the XR400's ear a bit, bu it is always good to have a few Malle Moto mates together

Go boys!

So I am not at the rallye, but I am still the TIming Marshall so I can't give and "insider info", pre-release of results, explanations of penalties etc, but I can (I hope) post stuff which has already been posted on other platforms.

Oakpics are there again this year, but only Lee-Anne. She is an incredible photographer, and is once again producing the goods.
These are some from the Amageza FB page:

Hi honey, I'm fine. Roger had a big off, cracked his bash plate and his engine. I helped him for about an hour, but we couldn't get the oil leak plugged so I towed him 40km to the end of the special, through some rather knarly terrein. We both fell a few times, but we made it. Then I towed him 60km to the bivvy.
No, I don't think I am Iron Man, I know I am Iron Man.

Former Paraplegic and Dakar 2017 rider Joey Evans showing true sportmanship towing Roger Kane-Berman on stage 2 @Amageza to come home 5 hours later than the rest. #WhataChampion

Comment by Bonova:
The man is my hero. Well done Roger for sticking in too. Not easy to be towed over that terrain for that far! Respect to both of you!

Joey:
(Roger) had a big crash on a hectic rocky climb. Rock went through his bash plate and broke an oil nipple on the sump. Tried to fix it for an hour, got it running but then damaged the motor and it wouldn't start. So towed him about 100km. They have a spare motor so he should be still in the race tomorrow. We both had falls while towing, the terrain was difficult to ride let alone tow. But all's well that ends well.We are both still in the race.

You freaking rock Joey❤

Via Rainer FB:

Stage 2 - Team Verve got off at 6:30 yesterday without any problems. Chris took off 11th, Ludwig 22nd and Warren Strong at the tail end, positioned at a very depressing 40th.

Warren had to figure out how this navigation really works, and damned quickly, so that he can ride at his full potential. His skill levels are right up there with the best having represented South Africa at the GS Trophy a few years back.

The route took them through controlled areas with speed restrictions in the first leg Riders with the skilll of turning corners at pace would make up time. After the refuel spot things got a lot more challenging, with sticky red sand dunes followed by some river sand riding and then finally through the beautiful ravines in the Riemvasmaak area and then the final liason into Kakemas. Many of the riders made navigational errors.

Chris was pretty consistent in his riding, picking up a few places and riding with the top 6 at times, only 12 minutes off the second place at times. His race time was 5:23 - only 10 min off 4 place rider Hentie Hanekom who's back yard is this terrain.

Ludwig lost a few places after the refill, cutting in his knee after going over the handlebars. I suspect it was caused by his custom bracket that had a sharp edge on it. That bracket needs to be made safer.

Warren rode like a champ, picking up 22 places at one point. Well done Warren!

Roger Ryder Kane-Berman, from the Subtech team, one of the favourites to win, had a crash into a rock damaging his sump and losing oil. Joey Evans (our Para to Dakar legend) stoped and helped him and donated 200ml oil and after unsuccessful attempt at bypassing the oil feeder, ended up getting towed through some pretty gnarly terrain with several offs by both of them and occassionally dragging Roger;s bike. What a huge sacrifice by Joey.

Roger had a spare engine which would be fitted through the night, hopefully we will see him at the start today.

It's a toss up as to who's the man of the match between Warren who started last and made up around 22 physical places, or Greg Raaf who also started near the back and ended up in the top 5, or Joey for sacrificing his ride to save a mate. You decide.

Team Verve's bikes were all in good shape. The little fix we made on Chris' bike for the chain runner only lasted 100kms. He's going to have to make another plan.

There were many 40 plus minute penalties dished out for most riders mostly because of speed limits infringements on Stage 1.

The provisional standings without penalties for Stage 2 are: Chris 9th, Warren 22nd and Ludwig 32nd.

Just a side note: I got a call from legendary Blue Bull (Neil Ringdahl) who also had a good ride but is taking a little strain because of lack of fitness. He's relocated back to SA, and work has been his focus. He nearly didn't make the start line, with a gearbox full of teeth only one week ago!  Neil confessed to an embarrasing faceplant fall in Kakemas on the concrete! We've all done that at some point, the main thing is you're not seriously injured and good to continue the Amageza.

Stage 3 starts any minute.

I got some feedback from my mate Martin Lourens last night, he’s racing under Droomers Yamaha:

“Hey all had my fair bit of bad luck with contaminated fuel. Almost had to be recovered. Sorted it out just in time. So glass still half full for me. Officially 2nd last but still enjoying every moment”.

David Thomas received some very bad news yesterday of a personal nature and nearly never made the start line. He's still riding though.

The top 10 normally get 2 minutes between riders and go off singularly. From then on its pairs every minute.

Looks like Koos had a storming run on his 690 today, just entered Springbok.  Chris Oppermann had a Tubliss failure yesterday, lost 2 hours, but came through the field big time today.  Willem had a battery failure yesterday 10 km from the SS end, brought his FI 450 to an abrupt halt.  That was with him in the outright lead at the time.  Looks like him and Hentie are doing the final bit to Springbok together.

Eish, I have so many questions!

I saw the fastest speed today at one point today was about 115 km/h.  Is that sort of the top speed they'll do on the Amageza?
For a guy like Antal who had problems - is his race now over?
Title: Re: Amageza 2016: Its Time To Race!

You can see much higher speeds, but only for short bursts.  I'll ask Chris and Willem a bit later, they will check the GPS speeds.  But generally speaking speeds are not severely high.  The trackers are pretty dismal as a reference, I think it calculates the average between a uploads, but can't be sure.

I saw the fastest speed today at one point today was about 115 km/h.  Is that sort of the top speed they'll do on the Amageza?
For a guy like Antal who had problems - is his race now over?

Antal will likely be allowed to continue riding the rest of the stages but with DNF so no medal. Speeds are dictated by the stage but there are usually some really fast sections too. Soos in 150+

Thanks Bill, Dwerg.  It must be devastating not getting a finishers medal.  :'(

Willem du Toit says he got 146 kph yesterday and 160 kph top speed on the GPS today.  He is on a 2015 450 XCW with a fairing.  I'll rather not divulge his gearing ratios :o

It seems David Thomas also had problems - tracker saying he's standing still for the last 5 hours?

Kobus
Take a look when the last update was received. I think you are confusing the last update with standing still. :)
It actually means that his tracker is not updating, but not necessarily that he is standing still. All the light orange numbers are ones that have lost comms.

Eish, I have so many questions!

I saw the fastest speed today at one point today was about 115 km/h.  Is that sort of the top speed they'll do on the Amageza?
For a guy like Antal who had problems - is his race now over?

So long as he completes the whole stage and he didn't hit a cutoff that short courses him and he is at the start the next day, he's still in. If he doesn't complete a stage, he only can do that once and still ride the rat of race. He won't get a finishers medal but it's not a complete loss. Just getting to the end is a huge achievement, medal or not.

From Joey:

Howzit guys
Today went well, no problems just really tired after yesterday. It got tough towards the end.
Warren is still in, he's changing his engine and will get some penalties but still in for a finish. What a boytjie👍🏻
Riders briefing after supper at 7. They normally post results at the same time.
The guys this year all seem better prepared. Not many withdrawals and the route is plenty long and pretty tough. Lots of work going on in the bivvy right now. I'm all done now, just waiting for some chow and a roadbook.
Cheers Joey.

S'true.
I am not at the race this year (work  :BangHead:) but I have heard few comments about roadbook issues. There all always issues, roadbooks can never be 100% perfect, but Alexander worked really hard to resolve the issues from two years ago.
The tracking is not perfect, but it is pretty good. Kyle works his butt off, and is there all the time to check that the SPOTs are working, batteries are replaced, mounting is OK etc etc. He deserves a lot of credit for what he does. And sleep, by now he deserves some sleep.

From Jan Sand last night:

"It will be rocky they said, there will be sand they said..... But there was fun in the sun on the stage 4!!! Everybody taking it slow today at the Amageza with excellent times and enough time to rest and prep for Marathon stage tomorrow!!!!"

From the Roberts Racing Ralley team:

"Cloudless skies and a promise of sand, rocks and no clouds got the team off to the usual 6am start.
Everyone was expecting a tough stage, but somehow the leaders managed some excellent times. We could only get photos from one spot, but it still shows the contrasting beauty of the area!"

I just heard from the horse's mouth, as I have two friends racing the Amageza, that the organizing is top notch.  Roadbook and all navigation is brilliant, all previous problems addressed and corrected.  Just look at the results, first 10 riders 1 hour apart.  Yesterdays top 10 finishers 13mins apart!  That speaks volumes!

Well done to all!

Can always do crooked maths and divide by the number of times you do it. The first one is by far the most expensive. Unless you get excited and buy an RR for no 2!

Dont think so as it might be to far tomorrow or they will just use grave roads.

I see Roger left A'Bay and is in the area WC Baja was held.

Neil - Bluebull is super lost and if he carries on from where he is will be taking an epic shortcut. My guess is that he's given up on the roadbook and aiming for a waypoint. If he doesn't turn around, he'll cut the corner and miss the refuel.

Hats off to Neil, he's taken a wrong turn, cut a huge Aleaxander Bay section out and landed up crossing the track close to the front runners. His only choices would be;

-To turn around and try find the track again - Might not have the fuel range for that.
-Carry on towards the finish, but would risk a finishers medal if he misses too many waypoints.
or... Do what he's doing now -Looping around back to Alexander Bay on the main roads to enter the track again and hope he hasn't missed too many waypoints.

It's going to be a long day

Looks like a couple of riders have bailed the stage and taken the high road, including BB after going back to Alexander Bay.

Martin Lourens has been giving us feedback every day on how his race is going. On the first two days he had issues with bad fuel which buggered up his FI sytem on the WR450 but the last two stages he got it sorted and he's been doing some low flying.

He recons he's have the jol of his life and says the route and organizing is simply outstanding this year. He's totally in his element with the whole experience.

Marcell Breytenbach (#116) had an off earlier today. Foot apparently injured and  been attended to by medics. His nav tower with nav equipment broke in the fall leaving him a bit stuck. He decided to soldier on towards bivy tonight along main roads, taking max penalty for doing so.

Geoff Paterson was the swimmer. Chris Ogden lent him his sat phone. He said that he thought he was going to drown. A very sharp corner caught him. Look up where his last tracker spot is there is a tiny dam on the outside curve.

Imagine having a near drowning experience on a desert race. That's one for the bar!

Shit, no 25 Ralf Basler is making an epic mistake.

He was short coursed and missed the Eksteenfontein turnoff. He would have gotten to Eksteenfontein the long way around but he's now attempting to go back up part of the race track and that is not good gravel.

The road there is not so bad until it crisscrosses or runs down the riverbed. There's sand and the odd big rock in there too. Being the last guy through with all the sand churned up is not going to be fun.

Once at the corner by the river the road is fine.

My guess at the moment is that Willem du Toit and Hentie Hanekom's positions are relatively safe, depending if penalties will be incurred.

Koos van den Heever stands a chance to forfeit his third place to possibly Rudie van der Merwe or Peter How.

Way too early to tell though.

I see Jan Sand (115) has not made a start this morning.  He came in late last night and I wonder if he's got bike problems.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Spoke to the people on the ground... Jan's bashplate came loos and had a nasty fall.  Broke a couple of ribs.  He continued slowly but later the rear moose collapsed.   :'(  His is fine but it would seem his out of the race!  :'( :'( They're on the way to Upington now

Thanks _ah_.  I followed his progress and training from just before the Baja and he's put in a lot of effort for this.  He'll be very disappointed, but I'm sure he'll be back!

Front runners on a 2015 'road'  they are on now was a special with a time restriction - if failed you could not enter the special...

Very rocky very hard...  Would be interesting to hear their comments as it was hard going to Pofadder, now it is the other way...

Some have special memories of this stretch in 2015 - farm hospitality

Pretty gutting to be at the finish without my bike, engine ceased at about 23km from the start this morning. Riders still trickling back in, its a hot and long day. Willem just has been handed the dakar challenge trophy. Congratulations!

Poor Mark k crashed badly near the start of the special, and broke his pelvis in a bad rocky section. He is on a plane to cape town for an op, condition serious but stable

I understand that willem won overall and the dakar challenge

Donovan got malle moto and 2nd open.

Jethro got 2nd malle moto and 3rd open class.

Malle moto kick some team ass ;D

Very well done to all who finished this epic race. It was great riding, through really beautiful and wild areas with a good technical mix.

I believe there are 3 bikes at least stuck out there with mechanicals.

Ill write about my epic experience another time.

12 k's to go,

Jut found out, his head bearing is toast too, his engine is not cool and they are stopping to toss oil in every now and then. He has refused to be loaded up and his rear bearing is toast.

He's the last guy in, Joey has organised that everyone come and cheer him in.

Chris and I discussed it, Chris is a fellow competitor and their bikes were not impounded to Parc ferme at the finish, so it would be within the rules.

Haha just logged on for the first time in weeks. Thanks for all the support. This was a real eye opener for me.
Yes the malle moto boys did really well. We were a great bunch of guys.
I felt strong and eager at the start this morning but made a stupid mistake at about 135 km. Riding at the front is a different ball game all together. Got lost and proper stuck in a rocky riverbed. After that I pushed hard to try and catch up but it was too late. Donovan took the win for malle moto, I am bummed but also happy for my friend he deserves that trophy.
As for Willem winning, he is not as fast as Hentie but still lightning fast with better navigation. Very happy for him and eager to follow his progress to Dakar 2018.

To all the guys that rode the AMAGEZA , You did the Ralley proud.
A good percentage of the bikes that started finished.
Guys towed each othe, stopped to help each other, You guys were all Epic..
Just a short comendation ,
"JOEY EVENS" All I can say is WOW :

Joey towed Roger Burman 100km, through the mountains on the Special Stage , in the Mountains near Riemvasmaak,
Up loose rocky slopes, down slippery rocky two spoor, in sandy riverbeds,
They wiped out 3 times while towing and yet they still were in good  spirits at  the end of the SS.
And then did the tar home towing.
Joey stopped for anyone that was in trouble,
Well Done Joey !!!

Well done to all the competitors , it takes true grit to finish, let alone place : months of prep of mind , body and machine.  And then for it to all come together in the grueling race and to overcome all the obstacles and to finish at the end, that takes a helluva doing .  Hero's all of you .  :notworthy:

Well done Willem  :thumleft: , we will watch the Dakar 2017 with anticipation . Also keen to see our Joey in Dakar 2017 , he who made us proud again this year with helping his buddies; his towing of Roger was the stuff of legends .  :ricky:

Thanks Lie -Ann from Oakpics for the great photos that told the story for us armchair spectators .

So is it just me or did this year seem to be ultra smooth as far as the running of it. Our thread was not as prolific as last year, but it seems as if everything ran without a hiccup.
Can those that were there verify please. Oh and the tracking was pretty awesome too, albeit it very pensive waiting for the transponder to update on the riders you were following.
Well done to all the participants,on and off bikes, and all the organizers and staff in the field.

It sounds pretty great to hear that opinion. I wasn't there, but did the timing remotely.
A HUGE shout out for Gert, the slave in the middle of the peecha. He joined the marshalling team quite late, put in a lot of effort beforehand to understand and practice running our timing wizardry, and I reckon he did an absolutely brilliant job.
Timing is a kak job. You get noticed only when things go wrong, and boy do you get noticed then! (I guess the same applied to all marshalling jobs, thinking of it....)

Now he needs a bike to ride Baja....

Good day guys and girls, quick post in between the chaos at work.

What a great Amageza, the best one yet! (everybody there will vouch for that)
Organisation was spot on, roadbooks were 99.9% accurate, routes were spectacular and the cameraderie between riders really great.
To Alex and all the marshals, thank you very much, once again you gave us normal okes a taste of proper navigational rallying. I will always be gratefull.

The big one: Thanks for giving me the oportunity to go to Dakar. What a honour! I am still a bit dumbstruck. You will hear a lot more from me in the next 14 months, as I will try and keep you updated on the progress. As Bluebull pointed out to me, a lot of guys have the aspiration, but not the oportunity, and it is nice at least to feel part of it via things like Wilddogs.

Well wishes for our team mate Mark Kapnoudhis wo broke his pelvis on stage 6, apparently he will be home by Wednesday or so. Hope for a speedy recovery!

Cheers
Willem

The event did go off very smoothly. The roadbooks were good. The bivvies were excellent with good food and enough facilities for everyone. The stages were shortened by reducing the amount of liaison distance. This allowed the riders to finish earlier, giving them time to get sorted and to rest. The dropout rate was very low. The tracks were mostly interesting, and sometimes challenging to ride, and generally the competitors enjoyed them. The only protests involved clearing up of GPS/timing issues and were dealt with very easily.

We were again stretched beyond a comfortable capacity by a few riders taking too long over the stages. In future we'll have to enforce more stringent cut-offs.

We were very upset by Mark Kapnoudhis' crash and injuries and wish him all the very best and a speedy recovery.

We applaud Willem's well deserved win and look forward to supporting his 2018 Dakar.

Cheers
Willem

Congratulations Willem!
I am convinced that I speak on behalf of a whole heap of WD's that we look forward to following you to Dakar 2018!!!!

Best Amageza yet!!
Hope Alex keep this recipe .Food was fantastic. Road book was spot on. Think there is a lot of guys out there that missed out. Tracks were somewhere difficult but always do able. There was not a day that were easy. You always had to concentrate. Thanks Alex and team.

Great stuff Willem. Wish you all the luck with Dakar. Still think you have to convince Henti to trail along.

Then to all competitors. Me and Blasie walked around camp every afternoon. Everywhere friendly faces were around. Chairs were pulled out. Blasie said that this was his last Amageza helping me. 3 years in a row. Now this morning he changed his mind. His words was that he were going to miss the guys.
I made more friends on this Amageza  than the other 2 combined.
Good Luck to David Thomas , Joey Evans and Walter Terblanche( Was @ the finish Friday) in the Dakar.
David said the longest day is going to be something like 1300km for a day. WOW.
There is lots of stories. Finding Blue Bull in the middle of nowhere. Henti and David flying past 2 3 times in 1 stage and the sad story of a drowned bike in the desert. Martin Lourens that got his bike going after 3 hours. Cris Odgen taking parts to stranded competitor etc.etc.
Today I am depressed( work) but so much richer ( memories).
Cheers Rudie

A big congrats to all involved, and especially Alex, obviously! I can think of no greater complement than to say that I was only mildly interested at the start of the rally but completely obsessed by the end!!! And been perving the pages of Gumtree looking for a 500 KTM ever since!

I know that Amageza has had its teething problems over the years, but finally it all seemed to come right.

For me this means - and probably in this order:

It's first and foremost a race.  Sure nice food at the bivouac is cool, but that's not why we're here.  From a distance it looked like all of this was sorted this year (well, I don't know about the medical side?), and it made for truly riveting racing. Willem could easily have lost the race on the last day - Geoff did the day before. And the race order changed dramatically in positions 3-10 on the final special. High drama, excitement and an absorbing event.

Live(ish) media coverage is probably one area that could do with some improvement to increase exposure, drum up more interest, and give better return for sponsors. This is totally possible, but probably needs someone who is a bit specialised in this area to get it done, who isn't having to worry about actually running the event.

I was bitterly sorry not to have been there this year, and to be honest I left a bit disappointed after last year's event, and hung up my boots. I think the formula is really right now. I sincerely hope Alex is going to keep going with this!

I heard murmurings about a possible last Amageza before the event, but I really think that would be a terrible shame. This is something unique and special. Every effort must be made to keep it going. I think it's probably at the limits of affordability and exclusivity right now, but most bikers with enough determination and enthusiasm can probably scratch the money together to do it if they really, really want to, and don't go too crazy on the bike. Costs must be contained, but the length, difficulty and location are probably about right. Maybe southern Namibia would enhance it even more, and isn't inaccessible - but I know it's been tough getting them on board.

Let's hope many of us are there at the 10th running of this special event in the not too distant future!

Now that the dust has settled, I would like to make a couple of comments.

WDT and BV you guys were awesome. :thumleft: :ricky: In fact everyone was.
Willem, we are with you all the way to 2018 - please shout or PM us if you need help! :deal: What a blessing to have more than a year to prepare.

The team spirit and general spirit of this rally was very different to last year. Everyone made new friends. Everyone was positive, and I did not hear one complaint about the road book. I thought it was very precise, Alexander and John spent a LOT of time working on it and it really showed. The routes were simply AMAZING. We did a section of the old Paris LeCap Dakar, and we did some areas that have never been ridden before. The scenery was amazing, and the terrain very varying, but always challenging. As Rokie (I think) said there was not one day that was easy, all the guys had to dig deep.

The organization was good and the officials were all very professional, friendly and polite. The competitors were a great bunch too, there was no whining and no kak verhoudings - not even at the tip of the spear. ;D The average skill and preparedness of the riders this year was actually very high, which was why the finish rate was high - it was not an easy rally by any means!

It was so nice to have the foreign riders with us as well. They all seemed to enjoy it tremendously, and there is rumor that a whole Finnish team will be back next year.

It was such an honour to ride in malle moto group - What a great group of down-to-earth guys. Amazing that we did so well without team support. I'd like to think it was the team spirit we had among the malle moto guys that contributed, but more likely it was individual brilliance.

One heck of an adventure and one I will never forget. A BIG THANK YOU to all those who followed and supported - we really appreciate it.  :hello2: :hello2:

I understand there is likely not going to be another Amageza rally next year, as there is little time for Alexander's team to prepare given the dates have to change to earlier in the year to fit better in with the FIM calendar. I heard that they would probably have two Baja events instead, but this may all change given the huge success at this year's event. Lets live in hope.

I just saw this comment on another thread (thanks John), so maybe there really will be an Amgeza 2017! :deal:

There's rumours that Amageza will be held in September next year, but nothing's certain yet. At one stage it was going to skip a year, but now it looks more likely we'll have one in 2017 after all. Let's hope.

What a brilliant event. Top Marks Alex and team, was near perfect. Variety of terrain every single day, some flat bits, sand bits and rocky bits.

As Donovan put it simply (have done them all to date), best Amageza yet. Glad i was part of it.

Well done to Willem for a top class racing example and on winning the Dakar challenge. Cudos to you.

First Amageza --> Done and finished. Next Amageza (I hope it's coming) is waiting.

For me this was first time in South Africa and must honestly say that it was perfect place for rally racing. You have everything there, soft sand, jeep tracks for thousands of miles, rocky mountain areas and even some dunes, open areas...everything.

Sometimes at the beginning it was a bit difficult to understand rb makers idea where we have to go and I was more or less lost. I think since 3rd day I got better confidence for navigation and was able to give more throttle. Anyway just in case when refueling I took allways full tank, 35liter total. A few times there was left enough for another round...

Italian lady worked like a swiss clock through the hole race, only one mistake was nearly flat battery in one morning (own mistake). There was some really fast places and little V2 was roaring like a bigger lion and gps says that 179kmh was top speed. Not bad for 5years old ex dakar bike?

Thanks for everyone and special thanks for MalleMoto guys.

Greetings from snowy and cold Finland,
Jori #20

Hey guys,

This was a spectacular event and as many said definitely not easy!!! Incredible routes and terrain!!! Perfect roadbook!!!

I think Alex Nel has taken this sport to the next level and the high finish rate says a lot about rider skills and preparation, each year it will get better and better. Guys train harder and build better bikes, learn from others and own mistakes and so everyone levels up.

Doing my first Malle Moto was daunting... BUT I actually had a team of 15 riders to encourage and support me... who can say that? Malle Moto all the way!!! There's a brotherhood in the Malle Moto camp! Thanks to Antal for the spare ICO cable and Claude for helping me fix my handlebar on the marathon stage.

Was also great to meet new guys like Grazer (Jonathan) and a whole lot of others, also great to be in Joey and Neil's presence to learn from them by looking. Then thanks to Gerrit, Claude, Marcel, Rudi, J3thro and Donovan and Jori for a good time.

To all the marshals: you did great!!!

BTW: the water hole that caught Geoff Patterson was almost mine too...

Happy with the result :-)

Cheers,
Alex

I believe he came from left to right? Greg had to help pull him out, was trapped under the bike. Apparently he had weeds hanging off his helmet like some kind of crazy swamp monster. ;D

When I came past I did not notice the bike, and thought Greg had crashed. It was a sharp curve in the RB, but it caught a few of us out. It was tricky dodging the other bikes that had stopped. I understand he passed Donovan in the dust just before missing the turn.

Beautiful. Loved that pic of the riders going past the cave.
