Title: 2017 West Coast Baja: The Race is ON!!!
Post by: Camelman on November 23, 2016, 12:35:14 pm
Good dayeveryone!

I trust you are all rested, strong and ready to race!

I don't know how you feel, but I've had enough time to rest after Amageza. Time to go find a new track in a new mountain!

To kick things off, the 2017 West Coast Baja is ready for entries. Same location, Port Nolloth, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Same dates: 18 - 20 March 2017. But different routes. This time we are making it slightly longer. At least 6 hours in the saddle for the fastest rider. So more like the 2016 Amageza Rallye Special Sections. Fuel requirements are 275km for Rally and 150km for Lite. Yep, the 'Lite' category is still there. We have had no complaints regarding the racing of ATV's (quads) with the bikes, so they stay. But, unfortunately the SSV's are gone. Safety concerns after the 2016 West Coast Baja and the lack of interest from that sector of motorsport has let to their exclusion from the 2017 West Coast Baja.

Now, please keep in mind that we have awesome relations with the owners of the land in the area we intend racing on, so I urge you not to plan extensive training missions to that area. Keep in mind the reconnoitering clause in the SR's. Speaking of :  The website and SR's are being fine tuned to fit the 2017 West Coast Baja and will be available by this weekend.

So what has changed:

Early Bird Special NOW OPEN !! http://amageza.com/web/shop/index.php?route=product/category&path=76_84 (http://amageza.com/web/shop/index.php?route=product/category&path=76_84)

From today (23 Nov '16) until 7 Dec '16 :  R6 270 Vat incl. (bike entry) , thereafter it will be the full price at R8 447,40. The special for ATV's is R6 897.00, and from 8 December, R9 292.14. For this period only - 5 paid entries from 1 team will receive 1x free Assistance Vehicle entry.

So fetch your double-hail walk-gun and go raid your piggy-bank! You don't have 'baja' time!!

Cheers,
Alexander

Total distance still more or less the same? Taking into consideration that a unregistered plastic cant do tar roads.
And judging by the dates only a prologue and 2 racing days?

From the information posted by Alex, I would guess that the rally stages will be in the region or ~500km as per this years Amageza while the lite stages will be a bit shorter as they will be different routes.

Assuming the same as this years Baja, then yes. First day will be scrutineering & prologue followed by two full days of racing.

Did any stock dirt bikes participate last year? My dirt bike won't make 150kms on a tank. It will struggle to do 100

I have a kdx200, and maybe soon a Dakar 650 or Ktm640 Adventure or Tenere660 or or( still shopping and researching)

Best case - i can take part in the lite class on the KDX.

Worst Case - i will go spectate on the 650.

I'll most definitely be ready for the 2018 season on a bike suited for these type of events.

I don't remember any big bikes, but they would have managed quite well.  If you're thinking 950, I don't see why not.

With 150 km range requirement, I'm not taking the 300 2 Stroke.  Not buying another fuel tank.  Think I'll use a Honda for this one.
Title: Re: 2017 West Coast Baja: The Race is ON!!!
Post by: Crossed-up on November 24, 2016, 12:27:23 pm
You should keep checking/negotiating with Alexander about fuel range. My feeling is that 150km cuts out too many people who might like to ride, but baulk at fitting LR tanks.

edit: I wrote this in haste and regret it. The fuel-range requirement is to simplify logistics while having proper long stages.
The last Baja didn't have any legs longer than 120km. A range of 150km will give the rider a margin of safety. It's really not practical to schedule 4 or even 5 refuelling stops. The support and the orga can't stretch that far.

Can anyone explain why the roadbooks are sold separately? You can't do a Rally without a roadbook - is it cause of the possible electric ones being used by some?
I'm intrigued

Unfortunately i'm out of this one.... It's just too far from Durban for 2 days racing.
As always - the western cape riders - you are super lucky!!

There are a bunch of race ready bikes around for those looking.....
Mine is one. Nitro's old bike is is another for sale at RBS in Pinetown I think. There is a large pool of rally-type bikes around now! No excuses :)

I too would also like to know why the cost of roadbooks is not included?
Assuming it is an attempt to better separate the costs for the rally and lite classes, why not just have different entry fees?

I have looked at that area many times. But its quite densely populated with people and animals. One requires low density population in the region of 0.1 persons/ km2. You can look at closed course rallies held in that area as a example. They have to totally close the road being used to all traffic. Then the course is maybe 50-100km long, and they ride it 3 or 4 times. Maybe Southern Moz is a option. But racing has just started there and my Portuguese is useless. Northern Moz looks good, but going serious off-road may get you in trouble with some long lost land-mine!

Yep, they are lucky. We need another Alex in KZN/Lesotho!!!

Ok,
we are in the final phase with our rally navigation instruments.

This will be the third generation of the Rockfox Trip-CAP units.  We will release info soon.  It will be HIGHLY COMPETITIVE PRICED.

We did a 'Heat test' today.  The unit was heated with hot air for 10 minutes. The fluid in the  thermometer actually 'separated' as it could not indicate more than 100C  >:D
Eventually the LCD blackened out.  The unit is still continuously running (3 hours later).

The new units will be even slimmer with more world leading features like our LED indicators.

No.
It just adds a compass and altimeter. The compass might be useful if you are stationary, but I am skeptical.
Maybe get an opinion from a real rider, don't believe me.

Personally I find the compass very useful as the ICO is useless when stationary.
I leave my GPS on the compass page and use it to confirm CAP directions when stationary.

That's strange. What ICO are you running? On my ICO cap it stays fixed on whatever heading I was last doing when I was moving.

Kobus, my other ICO broke so I used the one with my CAP for the odo, and ended up using my Etrex 20 (or10?) for the cap headings. It was hard to read but doable for me on SS 4 but may have been part of the reason why I binned it in the dunes! ;D Up to that point I began to convince myself that it was even better than the ICO because for a change I started watching my speed on the device rather than on my ICO, in the speed control zones. :P

If yo want to save money, get the 20.

The compass might be useful if you are looking at it while on the move, but as soon as you are stationary it does not work well. Its easier to see you heading on the compass feature while moving that looking at a little part of the screen on the 20.

But Im not convinced its worth the extra cost for that.

In iother words, if its easily affordable, go for the 30, otherwise rather save your cash.  All Etrex's are really good instruments.

GPS is way less accurate than a good CAP. I used my gps for headings (didn't have budget for a cap) and it's dodgy to say the least. As a backup it's not useless

Well maybe it was just mine then because my direction could vary as much as 20+ degrees while going in a straight line. Difficult to hit that split at 308 degrees in the middle of nowhere when that's the case  :lol8:

Was thinking the same thing bonova.

Remember CAP is COG, ie: Course Over Ground, and can only be derived from a GPS accurately, as it takes into account your last position before the current ident. If you set your GPS to Magnetic, it will show you COG corrected for Magnetic Variation. In South Africa that can be anything from +14 to +22 degrees West. If you have a good GPS with a Magnetic Sensor, it will show you Magnetic Heading. Then you can have some Magnetic Deviation to content with. Anything electric in your wiring harness in close proximate will cause the magnetic reading to differ. Hence the need for a compass swing in aircraft with a deviation card under you compass.

Hi,  I know questions are not considered daft, but it is feeling one gets. So here it is: Do the lite ride the same route as rallye. The fuel requirement tells me no. Have rb holder and gps62 (non compliant me thinks), but no ico or fuel range. Maybe sell rb and ride lite version. Only problem if I want to do Amageza again. How different is lite version.

Lite do some sections on the same route.  If it gets technical due to dangers etc etc the lites will do an 'easier' section.  It is mostly a safety issue due to the limited info available on the GPS only. (Roadbook can give meter by meter info so the rider stays on course.)

My feeling will be that it will be pretty much the same route, give or take 50 km.  3 marshal points will have the fuel for the lights. That will make it just about max 400km for the lights and 450 a day for the roadbookers.  I discussed this with Alex as I was not keen for the lights to be shorter, but the navigation with a GPS track only is trickier than with a RB, so I think 400km is a good target to aim for for the lites.

Just a quick reminder. Early bird discounts are closing in 3 days (7 Dec).

There might not be a 2017 Amageza Rallye.  (due to lack of sponsor & entries/ interest).

There might also not be a 2017 Livingston Cup if I gauge the interest at this stage.

If you have not done, or want to still do a real Cross-Country Rally in 2017, it seems the West Coast Baja could be the only one by Amageza Racing for 2017.

Due to the financial knock we took with the 2016 Amageza Rally, I am moving out of full time race organisation. I have no choice. Like I might have said before, I budgeted for 80 riders for the 2016 Amageza Rallye, only 46 entered. The missing entries (money) came out of my already depleted piggy-bank.

Seeing that I delivered on my promise to create a rally where guys could train for Dakar and get them there (Brian B, Albert H, Kobus P, Joey E, Willem d T), I feel no remorse in letting go of the Amageza Rallye. I gave it my all, sometimes I got it right (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016), sometimes I got it wrong (2015). But it was a epic experience. There ain't no manual for this! Now its time to try and resurrect my depleted finances. 6 years of epic financial losses will do that to you!

So the 2017 West Coast Baja could very well be my final cross-country rally as promoter/ organizer/ race director, chief slave, etc...  :o

PS: The only reason there is a 2017 WCB is because I told some new guys & the town of Port Nolloth in 2016 there would be one, and I don't renegade on my word!  :)

I know there are quite a few people interested in the 2017 Amageza, It has been a long year and many preparations went into the Roof over the past few months, but I am sure in the new year there will be a more positive response towards the Amageza. I had good conversation with many guys over the past few days regarding the Amageza, we keep our fingers crossed.....

It will be sad to see Amageza/WC Baja/Livingston 'wilt'.  Me thinks it is an issue of advertising. We went away with friends on an offroad trip to Boegoeberg this weekend. NO ONE other than Mike and I knew about WC Baja and Livingston.  Most did not even know about Amageza.

On the way back (before I even read this post from Alexander) I thought about the issue around exposure and how to advertise the events.  Earlier this year the Lesotho challenge also had to be cancelled due to lack of entrants. Maybe we are at the crossroads in the sport and need to re-think our approach.  I have spent a lot of money in the development of the Rockfox Trip-CAP and roadbook units, so in some respect I would 'do anything' to keep the sport alive. :(  It might require a complete re-think to reduce cost but still make it a (navigational) challenge. The bigger issue is that once any event vanish off the calendar it will be twice as difficult to get it back.

For me WC Baja 2017 might also be my last attempt to complete the event as I am getting older every year,

Sterkte met die reelings Alexander.

I don't know much about the rally scene, but I agree with Adie, exposure is a problem. Amageza is an awesome event and I don't think it has gone full circle. I don't think advertising would help though, you need to bring the race closer to civilization where people can see/experience the race and also your sponsor's branding/products etc. I understand that there are good reasons why it's held in NC though.

Would be a terrible shame to see the end of this big adventure. Can't someone be brought on to take it over? Possibly keep Alex in a board role or executive supervisor or something?

I do not think it is a case of Alexander not wanting/willing to.  The issue at hand is a financial one me thinks.  You need to balance the financial scales, no matter who is doing it. Even if the dream continue (as a part time venture) the org needs to make a living.  That point is directly related to the entry fee/participant ratio.

I can fully understand the costs involved if you have a person doing this fulltime and he has to earn an income from the one race a year.
I was the first to bitch and moan about the high costs of the 2012 Amageza which is a pittance of what the guys pay today.
The current Amageza and all the arrangements and back-up must cost a fortune

Racing is expensive and I think people that have the funds to do it nowadays are extremely privileged.
I just can not spend 50k a year on it...........it is just too far beyond my reach.
But then again I suppose it relies on where you are in your life w.r.t. financial and family commitments etc.......

I sincerely hope there is a 2017 Amageza.
It has become a sterling effort to be praised and great event

Think of the most famous bit of the comrades marathon. It's where the runners come crawling into the stadium and people cheer them on to push across the finish line. Now imagine you ride into a venue in Cape Town/JHB with your battered bike and dirt in every crevice. Spectators will eat that up. Those spectators are what draw the sponsors. If the event and the riders can get more sponsorship opportunities the event will grow.

It's been asked before, but do you guys reckon the range for the lites will be kept at 150km? Buddy of mine has a Husky 500 but will probably struggle to do 120km on a tank.

Essentially you will cause enough damage to a BMW that you could have bought a used plastic for the cost and still have spare change.  I am a bit of a fan of doing difficult stuff with big bikes, (and I have kicked about the idea of doing a full Amageza on a F8GS) but I can never get to the point where I can commit to stuffing up a bike completely.

Will RAD (Or anyone else) be doing a Rider / Service Package again?! I was hopelessly under prepared last year!

Alex, hopefully you get enough support for the Amageza this year, as I would love to enter this event. You dont think one of the issues with lower entry numbers last year was the "qualification"  requirement which you put in?

A question for the experienced guys please:

When it comes to hand guards, I was advised to stay away from the alu frame ones, for the simple reason that you break your wrists easier in the event of a fall or going over the bars.

I noticed in the pic of TP's crash that he also uses the all plastic ones. Your view please.

Most of the top hard Enduro guys use the open shield type std on KTM enduro bikes. It's an option - carry spare levers and/or fit ARC unbreakable levers.

Guys

I have entered and paid for the Baja but I had to cancel due to unforeseen work priorities from my employer, so I would like to sell my entry. I have the following available for sale:

1.   1 x Motorbike Lite Entry for open class (above 450), I entered a KTM 690.
2.   1 x Support vehicle.
3.   There is a admin fee of R1000 payable for change of entry.

I had communication with the event organisers and suggested I try to sell my entry. The value of the entry is R9447.40 on current rates. I will sell it for R6000 plus R1000 for admin, you save R2447. If you are interested please contact me for "negotiations". Ek sal bietjie onderhandel, maar net n klein bietjie.....

Following Dakar for the past weeks makes me wish that March will come quickly. Then riding two hours in sand this past weekend made me wish I had more time for training...

Can anyone tell me which license is required for BAJA? I presume we will need a license of some sorts from MSA. We're planning on doing a CSMX event in Feb, and need a licence for that race. So a year licence might actually work out cheaper, if I can use that license for BAJA as well.

Cheers

An annual MSA license will set you back about R2,200 and a one event license about R500. (Think both incl medical insurance)

Calculate based on how much racing you plan on doing for the year.  Also consider WOW license if CSMX have a class for it.

You need to belong to an MSA affiliated club before taking out a  MSA club license.
WCOC always help out Amageze/ WC Baja riders with a discounted membership @ R250 -
If anyone would like please download the membership form off www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za and mail to info@westerncapeoffroad.co.za with a note Baja then ill refer it to admin for discount.
This can also be used for the Tankwa X Country Rally in Sept.

I'm so stoked for this event after watching the Dakar. This is our opportunity to ride two stages that are similar as any good Dakar stage, perhaps just a little shorter which makes it doable by the average weekend warrior who knows his way handling a bike to a reasonable extent. :deal:

If you are an enthusiast, I would highly recommend you give it a bash.

If this is all new to you, don't hesitate to reach out to me or any one of the many accomplished wilddogs for advice. Kamanya, J3thro, bonova, WDT, scrat & Bill the Bong are just a few of the riding gods you could chat to. :thumleft:

GO FOR IT!!! :ricky:

This year's Dakar was EPIC. Maybe because we knew so many of the entrants personally!

BTW: In 2015 I tried making the Amageza more 'Dakar'. Afterwards many riders stopped riding and many came to to me angrily saying 'If I wanted to do Dakar, I would do Dakar'.  ;D

There might not be a 2017 Amageza Rallye at this stage (Very low entries in 2016). So if you want to do a Amageza event this year, try and get to the Baja!

This year the master plan for the West Coast Baja is actually three stages.

Saturday: 100km
Sunday: 300km for the Off-road Class ('lite') and 400km for the Rally class.
Monday: 200km for the Off-Road Class (Lite) and 300km for the Rally Class.

The kilometers is really not the be-all and end-all. Its hours in the saddle that matters (For the faster/ average + riders).
2-3 hours for Saturday ,
5-6 hours for Sunday and
3-4 hours on Monday.
Prize-giving Monday evening. (3-10 hours. lol)
Back home on Tuesday. (Its a public holiday)

Planning a proper prize-giving 'pool-party'/ opskop for this year! We will send out a email to our database soon regarding. If you want to get the updates, please register on the shop! http://amageza.com/online_shop/ (http://amageza.com/online_shop/)

We're going big!!  >:D

PS: You only need a one event license for the West Coast Baja. No club license required.

Can I count on your entry?? We need to rock the Richtersveld this year!!  :thumleft:

Enter support vehicle at R1,000, irrespective of amount of occupants.  Does that answer your question?

Last years Baja was quite hectic for a newbie like myself. This year the distances are longer...Amageza longer...hopefully less technical so that the newbies can manage...not catch a skrik. Hoping Alex keeps in mind that he needs to gain new riders...and hopefully not give us Devils Breath to ride on day 1....aftjop was dit darm....but there will be sand...and lots of it!!!! So excited!!

Does anybody know how many entries the Baja has this year to date?

Once again we are left with interesting choices here:

Off-Road Class ('Lite'): This was created to cater for the guy who wants to test a long distance race without having to spend R20 000 on tanks and navigation equipment. It was never intended for a entry-level rider. Now this is not a bad idea, maybe a green a red route.

Rallye:
The normal Amageza-style & distance. All on a road-book.

If adding a green route to the Off-Road Class will mean more entries, I'm all for it! I understand now (it's takes time for me to learn....) that not everyone wants to sleep under a bush and carry their bike over a mountain....

Although a full on bivvie with food, tents and toilets are not currently envisaged (due to unknown number of entries), we working on a PROPER end function though. Pool party, cash bar, braai with salads, rolls and malva pudding....  :lol8:

I have gone through all the emails regarding after the request for feedback. I will post some of the common questions and replies in due time. (After I have bandaged my wrists.... ;D) For those of you who replied, thanks!

Let me know what you think regarding GREEN and RED route Or maybe name it a Bronze and Silver route. (Gold for the rally class?).  It will mean more time finding routes, but if that will add a new class of rider and get more okes riding, then I'm game if you are?

I agree with Grolls. A green/bronze route which is rideable by a good rider on an adventure bike, with little or no modifications to the bike.

We have a "farmtruck" devision at the KoŽs rally for the guys feeling the petrol-pressure.....these guys take part in a much smaller race with normal bakkies (there are certain restrictions and rules though) or what have you, and allot of these okes get bitten by the rally bug and turn up the next year with a dedicated racing machine.....So I guess it is more or less the same as what Grolls suggest could happen if you include the adventure bike element.....in the early days of Amageza it was all Adventure bikes and the top finishers have mostly all gone on to dedicated recing machines........

I recommended the same in Alex's email survey. There shouldn't just be below and above 450cc but a 3rd adventure class. Almost like Rally Raid that work on GPS's, same as the lite class. It still however remains a race.

Agree, the Baja should be an opportunity for a wide range of riders to experience rallye type conditions without having to buy or build a complete rallye bike.

Roadbooks have an advantage, they are able to describe road conditions in detail to assist riders with cautions. Tracks on a GPS have limited info.so riders must go with visual judgement.

There is such a class the 'Off-Road' class. Was called 'Lite' last year. You ride what you bring. You need 100km fuel range. You use whatever GPS you have. ( Note: as long as it has a USB interface via a mini-usb and can be browsed from Windows Explorer) You don't require a license, registration nor roadworthy. The route is a bit shorter than the Rally Category and navigation is by GPS. You only require a One Event MSA license.

So all those guys who said they would enter the Livingstone cup on their adventure bikes have no excuse to enter this race.
Will there be a prize for the first place adventure bike or do you think they will be competitive against the enduro bikes in the Off-road class?

Essentially there is no reason you cannot do the Baja 'Off-Road' class on a bigger bike. I rode extensively in that area with first a KTM 990 and then a Yamaha Tenere. So did the 2013 & 2014 Amageza competitors. Both bikes were fine. A lighter bike is just more nimble up rocks. If enough riders are interested, I can add a 'Bronze' class, circumnavigating the most technical climbs. Decents should not be a problem, nor should sand if you have a 21" front wheel. Let's just say, I will give you a route around the rougher stuff.

Could be something like:
Gold: Rally Class - Road Book Navigation, 250km fuel range, 500-600km stages.
Silver: Off-Road Class: GPS Navigation: 100km Fuel Range, 400km Stages.
Bronze: Adventure Class: GPS Navigation: 250km Fuel Range, 300-400km Stages.

First, Second, Third trophy in each class.

You will still need a One-Event MSA License. Get it from carmen@motorsport.co.za (If you are older than 50 years, you need to send a stress EKG to MSA before they will give you a license.)
You will need to hire a tracker at the event: Around R600.
You will still need a 446 MHz two way radio to chat with org aircraft.
Good idea to rent a Satellite Phone. Extremely sparse cell reception, and the cheaper satellite tracker does not have a  SOS button yet.

You will walk around like John Wayne after doing that area on a big bike. Its epic riding stuff. No gates, no people, few animals and WIDE open space!

Here you go!

You will require some sand and rock riding skills. But we will not send you up a goat track nor sand-dune.

You will not be racing but will only receive a finishers medal on completion of all three stages. You cannot ask for, nor will you be given your times. If you need to prove your speed then choose another class!  >:D

You can however bring whatever has wheels and a engine. No roadworthy required. You need to be older than 18 if solo. If you are 17 and a parent is doing the race with you, then you are welcome to enter. You require a minimum of a MSA Single Event License from carmen@motorsport.co.za.

I will add this to the planning-a-ride thread as well. What you get for your moola is over

hi Alex I will be taking a long ride up from Port Alfred via Winterg/Katberg informal ride get together to come visit and watch , will happily be a marshall if you need . First time to Richtersveld area and then a slow ride back down west coast then via TankwaLangkloof Baviaans to home. Would love to race it but still got to get home on my bike . Thanks for the offer!

I do recommend though that you come do the Adventure class. It's not a race for this class. If you finish first or last, you still only get a finishers medal. In fact, you won't even be getting your time. Your objective is NOT to race, but to enjoy the spectacular terrain with backup, insurance, etc.  :ricky:

See how quiet this thread has become . . . no-one has any excuses not to participate and now they (we) are not so loud anymore  :pot:

I have absolutely NO excuse not to come and do the Adventure Class on my F650GS Dakar. it has done 109 000km already - surely it can do a few hundred more. None of the "one day I'll have the money to buy a race-ready bike" or "I'm a great rider, but I just don't have the time to get race fit "  hold any water with the Adventure Class!!! Seriously. Let's just get up there and ride!

Oh wait . . . I already committed to be on a friend's pit crew - he is doing the real race. But, seriously, if it wasn't for that, I would be up there riding the Adventure Class on my Dakar. The rest of you have no excuses!!  :pot: :peepwall: :pot:

I signed up for the distinguished title of "slave" - which I guess translates to "pit b!tch" or "pass-me" (as in, "pass-me my gloves", "pass-me the 19-inch spanner", "pass-me some water and a snack" and "pass-me a beer, dammit!" . . .)

All of a sudden entering the BMW sounds a lot more appealing!

Four weeks and one day to the 2017 West Coast Baja!

The Rally Class shown in the image below will be styled on the 2016 Amageza Rallye routes. So longer than the other classes on the Baja, faster (read: less technical), flowing with good navigation!

If you haven't entered yet, you should. I'm working very hard with various governments to make the 2017 Amageza still happen. You are going to wish you had some more good navigational racing before that one happens!!

To many great rally pilots and upcoming rally pilots to let this sport go. We need a African born rider on the Dakar podium. The saying goes 'It takes a village to raise a kid'. In rally terms I say: We need 200 rally pilots, in anything that moves with a engine, to make sure we can hone the skills of the few who will make it physically and financially to the Dakar podium.

It's time: Get off the fence and into the frying pan. If you are already in the frying pan, get into the fire! If you're in the fire, call me. I'm there already, we can comfort each other!

Jokes aside: You keep entering, and I'll keep fighting the fight!

You ready??

Jis guys 4 weeks to go and still plenty to do.

What do you guys typically carry with you in terms of spares? And how do you fit/carry this to the bike?

I was thinking large camelback with space for 4/5liters of water, medical pack and basics like cable ties and duct tape.

But that will get very heavy on your back, and you haven't even mentioned tyre levers and spare tubes yet...

Waar is die manne wat weet? Share your wisdom with the rookies please

Jis Charl

Ek verdeel al die spares tussen my camelback, baadjie sakke, toolbag in my bashplate en cabel tie goed vas aan die bike frame.

Die goed wat jy vinnig moet by uitkom, bv leatherman, KTM 8 Tool, snacks, paar cable ties sit ek in my baadjie sakke.

What Willem & ktmkobus have said is spot on. :thumleft:

Try to get as much onto your bike as possible. If you are going to take a chain master link, you might as well take a chain breaker. ;D

Kobus: Why the dishwashing liquid? I take one of those tiny bottles of baby oil and some tissues. 1) to clean my ass properly after the inevitable boskak, and also as a top up for brake fluid in an emergency.

Making sure you have a clean ass is better than having a shitty one that chafes you in your glory in. :imaposer:

I would add you should take 2 x 3L camelbacks. The best ones are the KTM rehydration ones. Easiest and lightest, also really quick to refill/open etc.

In the event of a puncture, what would be your process for getting either wheel on and off? What would you use to support the bike?

Bloody hell, a rally topic degenerated into discussing crutches holding up bikes. :imaposer:

It tells me a couple of things:
1) Everyone have broken legs riding  :lol8:
2) Crutches are a great DS accessory - Take note Chris - You should have crutches in your biking accessories shop in CT :deal: :laughing7:

But I would not bother. Jonathan, most guys (including me) cable tie a couple of those short tyre levers to the frame somewhere. No problem if you have a RFR. ;)

Has anyone tried wrestling off a Michelin desert with just two short tyre levers and a leatherman?

Looks something like this:

(https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2F4.bp.blogspot.com%2F-XW9JD_7YLZU%2FUt92mMIh-8I%2FAAAAAAAABkM%2FgGvTmPW-a6E%2Fs1600%2Fmanofsteelscream.jpg&f=1)

Except in the desert sun. i.e. even more crap.

That's why I also have one longer screwdriver on my bike as a tyre lever or general poking tool.

I would add you should take 2 x 3L camelbacks. The best ones are the KTM rehydration ones. Easiest and lightest, also really quick to refill/open etc.

Bliksem, those are small sheets of toilet paper!!  :laughing4: I have seen them before but I dare say you need to be precise the way you use them!  :snorting:

Re the water bladders:
Rather get a larger backpack and have two in that. I was able to get two x 3L bladders into the standard KTM backpack. One in its usual pouch, the other in the pouch for tools etc. ::) I jury rigged the top of the bladder with a piece of string to hold it up.

That meant I had to put only really thin things and only a couple of energy bars and stuff in my backpack. The rest of my food ended up under my seat... ::) But if you can afford a fancy rally jacket the pockets will do the trick. I also have all my tools on the bike. I previously had them on my back and its amazing how much more the weight tires you out. Its my personal preference, but others choose to do differently.

I drink a lot of water so I prefer to take more, and have one camelback with go-go juice. Nothing worse than being stuck, out of water in the middle of a hot desert...a recipe for heat stroke. I strongly recommend you get two.

OK, ek moes teen wil en dank my Baja kaartjie verkoop.  Daar is net te veel wat ek nie ingepas kon kry.  Ek het nie meer 'n 450 en Mike se KTM le nog in parte omdat ons nie tyd het vir die herbou nie. (Ander belangriker projekte  :-[ )

Watse opsies is daar.  Ek het die 'Adventure klas' met die 800 oorweeg maar daar het ook 'n paar struikelblokke opgeduik.  Die laaste opsie is om as 'ondersteuner' op te gaan.

Stage 1  (Attack of the Sand Snake)
Stage 1 will consist of laps of a 25 km loop starting and finishing at the airfield. The Off-Road class will do 4 laps, and the Rally class, 6 loops.

Stage 2 (Of Sand and Sweat)
This stage is 99% sand with dunes and sand tracks. You may require lots of hydration. The dunes will be early in the stage followed by the notorious Buffie's Bollocks some of you might remember from last year. Please take care at all times. Do not come down the dune face while someone is going up in the same track. I would suggest teamwork among all of you. Go up the dune single file, one at a time. If you fall, and have to come down, you join the back of the queue. This way you have the best chance of making it up the dune. The track is curved and I find t hat on the 450, seated, third gear at 80% throttle seems to work a treat up there.

Stage 3 (Of Rock & Stone)
This stage is mainly rocky with steep loose climbs and technical descents. It is in a very inhospitable area and care should be taken. Ensure you have adequate hydration. It's a bit shorter time-wise than stage 2. The idea is to get you back in time for prize-giving.

I'm sorry that Namibia hasn't worked out. Namib dunes would make an awesome stage.

I imagined being allowed to cross the Orange at one of those wide pebbly places and straight up the sandy slope into the dunes!

Who are camping and where?  I see the entrants can camp in the school yard. Will find out if spectators can contribute $$$$ and camp there as well. (No Showers though  8) )

A word from the sponsors:

Hey everyone
Due to a gale force wind prediction for Saturday afternoon we have no option but to swap things around a bit. We will now start the race early and do the mundane stuff later. Please download the new programme as well as your new scrutineering time slot here.
In brief:
1.   Friday evening from 18:00 we will issue armbands, documentation and race stickers at the Scotia Inn. Welcome will still be at 19:00.
2.   Saturday morning your crew can start setting up on the pan from 07:00. Only vehicles with race stickers can be accommodated in the pit area. Other vehicles can be parked in the spectator area. Only armband wearing competitors/ crew can access the pits.
3.   We will announce on Friday evening if we will once more do a procession through town like last year. The town is adamant that we do!
4.   At 08:00 we start to race, and you will not be able to get to the pits from outside the pan. Spectator entry will be available, but crew vehicles have to cross the race route. So you see why you need to be in place before 08:00. We will try to make the pan available earlier for crew setup, but lets see how things play out.
We have set up a SMS gateway to be able to communicate with you as all of you and us are all over the place in Port Nolloth. If we need to get a message out quickly we will use this. Only persons who purchased a item from the shop for the race is on this list as well as marshals. Please feel free to share such a SMS with your crew. If you don't get one, and you are a competitor, then we most likely have the wrong cellphone number for you, or your phone is blocking bulk SMS carriers. In the first case, send us your new number. Nothing I can do for you in the second case.
Make sure your radio is charged and ready to rock for Saturday morning. We will not have issued the track ers by 0 8:00 yet, so we going old school. Their will be marshal vehicles in strategic spots and we will all monitor Channel 1 for a call. More on this at briefing Friday evening.
The town is really looking forward to this, so we can expect a good turnout at the pan.
As you can expect we are swammped at the moment and if any of you send more emails, I will have to make my own food as Marie-Louise is stuck in front of the computer 14 hours a day. If you have not yet completed your entry form, or sent us a copy of your MSA number (Mr Superman, please sir!) do so. We are going to be on a tight schedule Friday evening and Saturday morning. If we all do our part, we'll rock this solid.
Later,
Alexander

Jason's team mate, Ian (110) suffered an engine seizure just before the end of lap 2. It seems the oil cooler developed a leak and, speaking under correction, Jason (113) towed Ian to the finish. Team Metal Horseman will probably start at the end of the field if they can get the Husky going in time!

So no live realtime tracking this year
Will be Waypoint tracking similar to the Dakar. As they go through the waypoint they get logged.

Today was super cool fun
Le Mans type start and sprint down the runway
Then 2 laps of 22km through dunes

Nice pic of my bike number 106

The prologue start was Le Man style, with the bikes lined up on one side and the riders on the other. At the drop of the flag, the riders had to sprint across to their bikes.

From Jason:

So, as expected, we're starting dead last today. Our gameplan is to stick together and nurse it to the finish.
Loading the backup vehicle for the day. Group departure is at 7, when we make a procession to the start of the special. Since we're starting last, there'll be a lot of waiting-around for us. Backup vehicle will meet us twice today. Once at km marker around 100, and again around 270km at Alexander Bay. Gonna be carrying cold drinks and fuel for us. Will be nice to get cold drinks at AB. There's no shop there and after that sand, in that heat, we're gonna need it. I felt like i was gonna die when we did this route at Amageza last year, and the disappointment was big when i discovered that there were no cold drinks to be had there. Looking forward to support team this year!

I think the only way to work this out to a degree, is to take the average speed of the rider and try place from there taking into account any penalties imposed so my guess is Hentie is placed first position >:D

Very sad news. Our good friend Gary Rowley (Grolls) racing as part of Team Verve passed away today on the stage, doing something he really loved.  :'( :'(

Details are unconfirmed but we know it was 40-50C out there.
I would prefer we kept the speculation to a minimum until someone out there is able to update us.

Our condolences to his whole family, his many friends, and the guys out there with him, especially the Team Verve guys - Can't imagine how tough things must be right now. He was such a big influence on so many of us.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you all right now.

Gary keep riding those clouds, you were an inspiration to us all.  :'( :'( :'(

So no live realtime tracking this year
Will be Waypoint tracking similar to the Dakar. As they go through the waypoint they get logged.

Today was super cool fun
Le Mans type start and sprint down the runway
Then 2 laps of 22km through dunes

Nice pic of my bike number 106

I spoke to Rainer a few minutes ago. They are all devastated, and still in shock.  :'( :'(

The whole team is pulling out and traveling home slowly home today once arrangements for Gary have been finalized. Wish we could be there to help.
Rainer said someone measured 58 degrees out there yesterday. It was very tough and very, very hot.

A minute silence was held at the briefing. The race is shortened by 100km today. 39 degrees expect at Alex Bay. I can't help but wonder if this was the right decision...
I think many will be riding on for Gary, people close to him have said that is what he would have wanted.

Wishing a safe day for those who are still riding, and traveling mercies for those going home.

Just back from the race.  Was a pretty hard core affair. Not so much the temps for the Upington based guys, but combined with the technical routes, a bridge too far for a lot of guys.  Difficult decision to continue the next day.  Not sure I would have finished if the last day was not shortened.

RIP Grolls

Doing physical stuff in hectic heat is always risky.....some are more acclimatized than others.
It is for good reason that the army stopped any physical training above 38 degrees, but when you are in a war you can't always choose a nice day to fight.
The Epic's route was also shortened today due to heat and it was in the mid 30's.

My thoughts go out to all of you...participants, friends, team mates and organizers.

Great pics, Adie ....keep them coming  :thumleft:

40C+ is hot .... makes the simple things monumental ... once did 48C in mid moz somewhere ... was bad .... scary .... no respite, ever!

I remember stopping next to a mud puddle, seeking shade and water - both weren't there - I was suffering. But I lay there, for a long while, watching the local animals and birds doing the same thing - surviving.

I felt close, very close ........

Well done to all who finished  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Back at work today after being on the support crew for the 7 Stars Energy / KTM Cape Town team supporting Kobus Potgieter (and Mark Krober).

It was an awesome experience.

It was VERY hot (the support crew for one of the side by sides drove their Amarok to where their riders had a break-down and they showed us a pic on their phone of the Amarok's dashboard reading 16h10 and 58 degrees!!)

It was a VERY heavy race briefing where Gary's death was announced. The option not to race day 2 was put to all the riders and one of Gary's team members told everyone that there is NO WAY they can stop the race; that Gary would definitely have wanted them to tackle day 2 . . .  my condolences to his family and friends.

I'll try to post some pics and vids (didn't really have time to take too much footage though).

By the way - no-one entered the Adventure Class . . . not one. I was keen to see what it's like with the view of entering it next year, but not sure Alexander will run the Adventure Class again if there was no interest this year (too short notice? too far away? too many big mouth keyboard racers (like me)?

If I had know long enough in advance I probably would have done the adventure class. I think there would be a market there for people like myself who can only afford to have one bike. There is the possibility that we are not that many I suppose.

Rokie, Adie, Bill & friends: Thanks so much for the feedback.  :thumleft: :thumleft:

This was a such a hard race in so many ways, for many of us following too. So many of us are really at a loss for words. It has been a huge loss for the whole community. Lets not forget our friend Gary "Grolls" was always chirping guys about rally stuff and encouraging everyone and now that we lost him we should keep that excitement of his alive. Just look again at that happy face in the photo Rynett took for us.

I think it would be an honour to Gary's memory for those who were at the Baja to share some of their own experiences. I am sure that is what he would have wanted. :thumleft:

Awesome route, stunning and rugged terrain, solid road-book, great mates... very, VERY tough weather conditions... freak heatwave... and the unfortunate passing of a great man (RIP). That about sums it up for me.

Would I do it again? Hell yes!
Why? Because life is short and you should live it to the max, calculate your appetite for risk and live and plan accordingly.

Thanks for organizing the race, in most cases it's a thankless job... let this not be the last SA rallye. The West Coast Baja and Amageza are feeding guys into Dakar at a rapid pace... just look at the number of guys wanting to do Dakar 2018! Keep it going! Time to get more entrants and big sponsors and marketing.

Awesome route, stunning and rugged terrain, solid road-book, great mates... very, VERY tough weather conditions... freak heatwave... and the unfortunate passing of a great man (RIP). That about sums it up for me.

Would I do it again? Hell yes!

So Koos.....are you doing Dakar as well?

At price giving Alex put me on the spot.  I wanted to keep it quiet for a while but he thought otherwise.   :) :) :)
Announced to the world I am going to try and do Dakar 2019.

I have too much on my plate now for 2018 and 2019 gives me enough time to prepare and get fit and also put the money together.
So, in the next month or so I will have put a plan together.  How I am going to get the money together is still a riddle but I am going to need help from you guys.   :deal: :deal: :deal:

I think after Joey and how he came to do Dakar, my story would be not so exiting but for me it was still hard and tough to get to the point where I decided to do Dakar.  But all of that a bit later.

So, Dakar 2019 is on the table!!!  Any advice to get there?   :peepwall:

Go Koos 2019!!!
you know, the keyboard fraternity (like me) are the leaches that want the brave okes to announce and chase and fulfil their Dakar dreams . . .
hopefully our (sometimes desperate) desire to share in the toil and the struggle also provides some inspiration to spur you on as we quietly shout "come on!" in our hungry hearts.
Go Koos!

Thanks man!!
I shall tell my story to Dakar a little bit later.  Might have something in it for the guys!   ;)   It will be a surprise.    :)
The next 20 months going to rough!!!  Lots to do, organisation, training...

After the hot stage at Baja, I am going to train even harder.  I don't want to sit in the heat because of not being fit enough.   :deal:

Hi Guys! Was nice to see some familiar ugly faces again.

Alex, Marie-Louise, Shaun, Mike, John, Adrian, Pierre, Rynet and the rest of the crew, thank you so much for putting this event together. The terrain and heat was tough on the marshals as well.

First let me get this out of the way. Apologies for my language at the refuel point on stage 1. Me and a few other riders had some high speed crashes in the dust chain behind the Side by Sides. Luckily only a few broken ribs and ego's.

The stages was fast and perfect in every way. In fact, it is the best terrain to race in SA! It was nice to start early and finish before lunch. With a few basic changes this can easily became a huge event.

Had a good dice with the ridiculous fast David Ellis on a liaison. What a down to earth oke. Got 170.2km/h on the GPS out of my KTM 350! Hope to see the guys again next year. Blasting through Stage 2 with Gideon Joubert was one of the best racing days of my life. Although the heat nearly got us both, haha!

To Gary Rowley's family and friends, you are in our thoughts. Let us remember his principles in life and the good times.

Hope to see you all again next year!

Godspeed.

Grazer - Not really. Its been posted in Vleisbook:

There are a couple of spaces open but it is definitely not for anyone new to desert racing and comes without support.

Email Alex if you want to be considered. :deal:

Are you going? You should. :laughing7:

Myself and Jacques Greeff will be using low budget personal trackers.  Sat positioning, but needs MTN GPRS to upload positions. In fact, my whole effort is essentially low budget, I borrowed a stuffed roadbook and an ICO without a wheel speed sensor.  For a back light in the roadbook, I bought some lumi-sticks at the Crazy Store :)
