Post by: JEC on December 07, 2016, 01:05:14 pm
Can anyone tell me if as a South African registered bike you would require a Carnet for the USA, Canada or any on the South and Central American countries??

No.  No carnets anywhere.  They would be more trouble than they are worth because the border agents have rarely seen them.  You just get you TIP in and out of each country.  No cost.

Watch for scam artists at the CA and SA birders who will try to sell you "passes" and multiple country insurance schemes.  Don't fall for it.  They are very convincing, have fake badges and fake papers but just FYI.  They are VERY PERSISTENT and you will have to decline forcefully and rudely.  It's part of the game.  It does become tiring though.

Rather check with the AA, a vehicle carnet is called a Triptique.

It saves a lot of hassles and individual deposits for each country

I did that trip last year, from Alaska to Argentina without a carnet.  I'm sure you could use one if you wish, but there is NO need.

Apologies, I based my opinion from my experience of importing vehicles into RSA on the odd occasion since 1988.  Just so much easier with a Carnet but maybe it's different in the Americas.
