Title: KTM 690 under-seat tank...
Post by: zebra - Flying Brick on December 22, 2016, 01:56:37 pm
going to be bringing in some under-seat tanks, and by late Jan i suspect the Husky 701 (see picture) UNDERSEAT tank will be finalized....

AT THE SAME TIME I WILL BRING IN KTM 690 UNDERSEAT TANKS, SO OPTIMIZE SHIPPING COSTS...

6.24L...

https://youtu.be/OHt1SzQrmhE

so am looking ONLY for an expression of interest, for now, I-F anyone is interested, and in pricing (when known), etc.

If you think it's a poor design, or you would of done it differently, then THINK that.... ;)

Looking ONLY for An expression of interest for now, since shipping is expensive, but the greater number of tanks, the RELATIVELY more less-expensive shipping becomes.

thanks

Chris, I am interested to find out the cost of this.  I am considering getting a 701 so would have to finalize that decision first.

I like this idea and so I'm interested for both the air filter and the extra fuel. However I would have to investigate how it would work with the safari tank on and how well the air filter will work offroad.

The price directly on the website is 339 Euro, without shipping.

http://www.radegarage.com/parts/ktm-690-tank/ (http://www.radegarage.com/parts/ktm-690-tank/)

Of couse I don't know what price Chris can get it for with optimised shipping. The only issue I can see is increased noise without airbox and you have to take seat off to fill up.

Just a personal note - I have met Radek (the guy making these) here in SA when he rode down from Czech Republic on his way to SA. As you can see on his website, he has quite a bit travelling experience, which does reflect in his products.

The above said, Chris can you find out if it will work with Omega kit? I don't necessarily care about additional petrol, but this may be good solution to carry water.

lindon poskitt did something like this to his 690 as well. Something along the lines of fitting a 450 tank to his 690, he seemed very happy and did massive mileage on his 690. Check him on youtube.

Yes, it's something I'd consider as long as that K&N filter can handle the SA dust  :thumleft:

Thanks, I have already talked to him (as I said I know him for some time). He doesn't know Omega kit, but believes that as long as one still has the original airbox (which I do), the tank should fit in. My only problem now is how loud is the bike going to be - I use it as long distance cruiser (therefore need for water storage) and open intake may get old really quick. He says it is louder, but not obnoxiously so - but of course that is very subjective.

Probably better than KTM airbox  :peepwall: :pot:.

That said - I saw you race occasionally and I'm not sure if this is the best set-up for that. For me - I ride mostly solo trips out in the sticks in the clean air, so this may not be such a problem. I have ridden 40k km the length of Africa on 1150GSA with KN filter (and then another 60k km here in Southern Africa) and never had a problem.

Yip, this and the dust issue.  But there must be some local experience on this as I know some of the rally guys remove the airbox and insert an aluminium tool tray in its place.  That surely must mean a small separate filter behind it as well.  Let's wait and see if anyone with firsthand experience on something similar can comment.

It won't take much to improve on that POS  ;) I've now fitted a Rally Raid filter which I was fortunate enough to pick up on the forum so I'm hoping that will sort out any future dust issues  :thumleft:

That's exactly what I was thinking. With a little tap at the end of he hose, you can then fill it up from the tap so you don't have to remove the seat.

From the video I see there's that filter sock which should help with the dust. My concern is water and deep crossings.

Very interested. 2016 701. Been looking at fuel options endlessly for the last 6 months.

@Chris - Zebra: Radek used to sell the kit with Unifilters before he moved to KN. So maybe check with him if he can supply it with them or without any filter and you can just package it with Unifilter (foam) yourself. I think people here may be much more receptive to the foam filter than to KN.

I read somewhere that switching to this filter setup will change the characteristics of the engine?

Something about loosing some punch in the low end...

I don't know about that, but I'm pretty sure that moving to this set-up (i.e. eliminating airbox) will require remapping of the engine. Even using those Rally Raid filters that just replace top of the airbox require remap.

The rally raid filters fit on top of the airbox. This tank replaces the entire airbox.

I think you will need a ram tube to enhance torque at low RPM.  The stock airbox actually incorporates one.  First saw it when I received a warranty replacement airbox in 2011.

noted, we will keep you in the loop, awaiting the finishing off of the Husky tanks, then will bring in both KTM and Husky under-seat tanks.

Came across a thread that discusses the air filter for the EVO 2 kit.  Slightly different application but same filter.  Thought it might be of interest in this discussion.

I may be wrong here but it looks like they're referring to the filter that goes into the original air box. This kit will replace the entire air box and you use pod filters instead. Unfortunately after my recent trip I won't be going this direction as I crossed many rivers with a few of them deep enough to have water flow quite far over my front wheel estimating them 60-70cm deep. I also drowned my bike when I went swimming in the last one of the trip - but that's got nothing to do with the air box/filter I just remember the entire air box filled with water to the brim before it drained out

Edit- I now see I was wrong it is a pod filter. Nonetheless I don't feel comfortable with that setup for the riding I do.
