It is especially great to see the youngsters getting a ride.  Dorren Loreiro did reasonably well in the Junior Cup last year.  I haven't seen who, if any young Saffers will be in the Junior Cup this year.  Let's hope for a few again.  Last year we had three.  Dorren now moved to this class and it  Troy Bezuidenhout will race 600 SSP European Championship on a Kawasaki for the R2 Racing Team..

With the two Binders in Moto 3 and Moto 2 and Stephen Odendaal defending is title in the Moto 2 European Cup, we are well represented on the world circuits.  Pity no Saffer qualified for the Red Bull Rookies Cup for 2017.

Update:  Troy Bezuidenhout will now ride for Team Toth Yamaha in the WSBK SSP 300 class next year as well.  That makes three Saffers in that class.  Looks like our Regional and Club racing of the 250 Class is paying handsome dividends.

I don't know if they will be.  I am hoping they will be, but we will have to be patient.  First races only 24 - 26 Feb.

Sheridan is going darn well at the moment, 3 laps to go still leading but under serious pressure, man I hope he wins this one, will push him to 3rd in champoinship. Come on boy!!

&^#@!!! beaten by less than .1 of a second, dammit! close last couple of corners and got beaten by the drag. Just ran wide on last corner.
Luckily still up to 3rd in champoinship.

Well done Sheridan...  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Indeed!  Especially since his team, at that time, had still not received the new R6.

Starting well for Sheridan Morias in the World SSP at Assen in the Netherlands.  FP1:  4th fastest.

World SSP300 see our Dorren Loreiro 9th fastest in FP1, but Bezuidenhout and Scholtz struggling way down in the late 20's.

Indeed!  *insert loud applause here*  Also, his team is still on the older model R6 waiting for Yamaha factory to deliver the new model.  It seems R6's are very, very hard to find   ...!   That, or the factory is worried about getting their arses kicked by the 2nd team!

EDIT:  #32SM went 3rd fastest in warm-up this morning.

Dorren Loreiro is 10th on the SSP300 grid.  Also a good one for him.

Wow!  Rather lekker weekend for Saffers on the race tracks today.

WSBK WSS600:  Hectic race with Sheridan finishing 5th, putting him 2nd in the championship.

WSBK WSS300:  Madness!  Moto3 all over.  Blink and you lose 5 places.  Our own Dorren Loureiro started well and fought at the sharp end all race.  Even led for some period, but finished 5th.  Troy Bezuidenhout finished P20 and Jarred Schultz P21.

European Championship Moto 2:  Steven finished 4th.  First race of the season of him defending his 2016 title.

Can you believe, during qualifying for the Argentina race, Brad had a huge tank slapper.  Apparently so violent that it bend the plate in his arm, which in turn broke the bone again.  He managed his 9th in the Argentina race with that broken arm!  Brad was operated on and new repairs done during the week after the race and he will be out for 6 weeks, missing between 2 and 3 races.  In the USA his bike was ridden to 14th by wildcard Ricard Cardus.  Brad is expected to definitely miss Jerez this coming weekend and possibly LeMans on 21 May.

I thought Honda would start doing better than that by now, in WSBK. They just keep hovering around the 10th spot.

SSP600:

Sheridan Morias, 4th in the race and still 2nd in the championship.  Well done Shez!

SSP300:

Dorren Loureiro, 6th.  He fought from 7th on the grid to 2nd.  The he dropped back from 2nd after a mistake in the chicane.  Worth watching this kid, now 5th in the championship.
Troy Bezuidenhout, 28th
Jarred Schultz, 31st

This class is getting ready to become the Moto3 of WSBK.  The racing is hot and heavily contested.  Very exciting!

Great day for the Saffers! That Loureiro laaitie impressed me. He'll do well this year.

He is a good kid who came through the classes here in SA.  NSF100, 150 Cup, 250 Cup, etc.  Very impressive at the moment and it looks like he is in a good and well organised team as well.

Janee!  The most famous person in WSBK after this weekend is the lady who waved the red flag at the start / finish!

In practice on Friday her tricep was wobbling in the waves.....
By the end of the Superstock race her arm was as buff as Stefi Graaf's (but she was using both arms to wave the flag by then :imaposer:

Bad news.

Troy Bezuidenhout has lost his Team Toth ride in the SSP300 class due to lack of funds.  Such a pity.

Donnington, UK results:

Sheridan Morias, SSP600, got a terrible start and was 15th at one point.  He fought back to finish 6th (made 3 places in last two laps) and dropped from 2nd to 3rd in the World Championship.  It seems Yamaha will supply his team with the 2017 R6's in 2117.  They should have had them after the 2nd race of the season.   Still, he is doing extremely well and is the only SSP600 rider who scored points in every race this season.

Dorren Loureiro, SSP300 git a great start, shot from 5th to 4th and then must have slipped a gear, or got a false neutral as he instantly fell back to 27th from where he fought back to finish 13th.  Dorren is 6th in the World Championship.

Jarred Schultz, SSP300.  Finished 22nd.  His best since the start of the season.

Shez was helped by that red flag, else he would've had a hell of a struggle to get back to the front. He never really looked competitive.

I am not sure what happened in the first race.  He started 10th and dropped to 15th by the end of lap 1.  Completed lap 2 in 15th and then got to 14th by the time the race was red flagged.

In the restarted race, he was about 1 sec per lap of Sofoglu's pace, but reasonably close to the pace of Mahias and Cluzel.  If he qualified better he may have done a heck of a lot better, possibly even 3rd or 4th    If I look a the top speed charts, they probably had the wrong gearing on his bike as his top speed was a good 8 - 10km/h higher than the top 3. Who knows?

Anyway, time that the Kalio team also get 2017 R6's .   .

Race Results:

Sheridan:  8th.  Still 3rd in the World Championship.  Still best non-factory Yamaha rider.  Still 2nd best Yamaha rider, including the factory riders.  Will hopefully have the 2017 R6 with new engines, etc. after the summer break.

Dorren:  4th.  Still 6th in the World Championship.   Started 11th on the grid and rode an amazing race.
Jarred:  DNF.  Crashed on last lap.

Upton:  DNF.  Crashed lap 4.

So...Supersport this past weekend did not broadcast the other Supersport/Superstock categories qualifying neither the races...only the WSB qualifying and races. Does anybody know why...?

Bear...do you perhaps know, where and when FI cars and MotoGP/WSB qualified on the same track in one season, what the various pole position times were...? It would just be interesting to see how the bikes shape up to the cars...or not...

As far as I know, the Pit complex is small and can only accommodate the WSB bikes. The other classes didn't race.
Same as MotoGP when they race there, the small classes don't go. I could be wrong.

Not sure it is the pit complex.  They did have all the Moto America classes on the same weekend, so there should be more than enough space.

The reason is probably cost, but I am not sure, so only the WSBK bikes go race there.   Also remember that the WSBK Superstock classes are a European Championship so they only race in Europe.

As an aside, South African Matthew Scholtz won both Moto America Superstock 1000 races over the weekend.

the circuit is built in a national park and they will not allow any new permanent structures, for other series they use race trailers with attached awnings as pits, that is why no other class's are raced over the SBK weekend.

It seems Laguna Seca as a race track is at the end.  See the link.  A sad story.

My first guess would be money.  There is a huge budget differential between the top teams and the lower teams.  These guys race overseas with no help from MSA and very little, if any sponsorship from SA.  In many cases, they pay to ride, i.e. they don't get paid, they have to pay to ride the bike.  In most cases, the parents and a couple of friends carry that cost.

Sheridan qualified 2nd on the grid this past weekend.  He ran 1st and 2nd for most of the race until his gearbox developed more neurals than gears.  He finally finished 8th, still 3rd in the championship.  Sadly Keenan Sofoglu, after a crash during qualifying is out for the rest of the season.

Indeed a pity about Sofoglu.  I enjoyed watching him ride.

Seems the final battles at Jerez and Qatar will be factory Yamaha versus satelite Yamaha!

Bad luck for Sheridan.  Ran 1st for awhile then the bike developed a glitch which dropped him back to 12th.  Glitch disappeared and he made up places to 6th.  Stupid YAMAHA!  Anyway, he is now 4th in the championship.  Still excellent and in with a chance to finish 2nd.

Ja 4th for the season is great!  :thumleft:

However, it looked like he had no confidence on the bike this weekend. He was slow on corner entry as well as mid corner. For someone like Ant West to clap him by more than a second per lap, something was wrong. Even when Sofuoglo overtook him, he looked very jittery.
