Title: Moonrises
Post by: RobC on July 19, 2008, 11:52:56 am
A lot of pics have been shown of Sunset and Sunrise... here is "Moonrise over the Maloti" to start a moonrise thread.
and a bigger version... which I like better.

I have now figured out how to cross link images from my blog... an old dog learned a new trick.

excellent DS

have you noticed at the moment the moonrise is just before the sunrise. Wish I had my camera back to capture this over the Platterkloof hills this morning.

This was shot and processed with HDR software (high dynamic range) to get detail on both the moon and foreground, else the moon over exposes or the foreground under exposes.  So we do two shots exact same with cam on tripod, one expose for moon and one for foreground.  Then software merge the two shots to get best of both worlds.  Shot with Sigma 70-200 f2.8 zoom at f2.8 45th sec iso200 and second shot f6.7 (exposing for moon) using spot metering.

HP, remember the moon is a light source.

The auto settings on most cameras will severely overexpose the moons surface, it looks like a distant light to the camera.

So put camera on manual and use an amazingly short exposure. Can't remember, it's like 1/10 s at f8. Experiment.

Here's one I took long ago, also bit overexposed:
