Title: Honda Africa Twin Enduro (Who wants one?)
Post by: Mike Adendorff on January 14, 2017, 10:19:02 pm
As you should know here at Rockfox we tend to take on a little bit of a challenge every so often, Whether it is building a Rally bike from scratch to do the Amageza with, or refitting engines into dirt buggies. We are always up for a challenge.

So when the guys from ADA training academy came to us asking if we could design and manufacturer a Rally/Enduro Kit for the Honda CRF1000, what else could we say but YES!!!!

What are the basic parameters - “Simplify then add Lightness” - Colin Chapman (Founder of Lotus)

We started with gutting most of the bike, all the plastics, exhaust, one front brake calliper and disk.

Items to Design and Manufacture.
1. New Front Panels
2. New Screen
3. High front Mudguard
4. Fork Protectors to match mudguard
5. New Rear Panels
6. Exhaust De-Cat and Lighter end Can
7. New Single Seat

We are already a fair bit into the project and because I have a phobia for writing and taking photos I didn’t think to share it with you guys. But here it goes anyway, maybe someone likes what they see and I can make another set or two (holding thumbs)

We decided to make the kit modular. If you just want the high mudguard you can take that, if you want just the screen or front panels you can choose that or you can take the whole kit and completely transform your bike.

Firstly is just a photo of all the parts that we stripped of the bike. As you can see most of it is plastic apart from the rear footpegs,. These don’t need to be removed to fit our parts, we just want to lighten the bike as much as we can the easy way first.

This is just the Teaser, Please follow the main Post under Garage Projects.

Hi, it would be great to convert my AT, as long as it makes the bike still look good!
Here are a few photos of the German company Africa Queens conversion kits!

@ Plabusch

We have looked at the Africa Queens model, and there are some ideas we will be taking from them. I will be updating the Post under garage projects with photos as we go on. Thanks a mil for your interest.

Hi Mike.
Don't know if you saw this...but for me looks like the best high fender mod available at the moment.
Very well designed....also search for it on youtube as these guys have definately done their homework!

It looks like a SM fender. I doubt it would stop much dirt.

Hi, the kit does not come with a fender....that's the beauty of it. You can choose any fender you want.
The bracket fits most fenders with 4 holes.
Also, I would fit a supermoto fender ,because a normal mx fender would not like the wind when you going at 120+ km/h.

Looks great Mike, rough indication on the costing yet? Also will you have the option to do just the front raised fender?

Hi Jouma,

Costing should be done by next week.

And yes you can opt for just the high fender option. our plan is to make it all modular so you done need one to fit the other.

Thanks

Well done, looks good. Just needs a sticker kit and some decent tyres.

Give us some info now please, like what is the total weight saving ?
How does the single disk upfront perform ?

Ok, some close-up pics of the build.

At the end the weight saving were not much.  The weight of 'heavy' items Light, 1 front brake, exhaust, rear footpegs and rear carrier were saved.  The new panels are marginally lighter as they are also ABS.  The new seat is heavier as we used a firmer foam.

Unfortunately we had to put the original tires back before we took the pictures.  The customer can now do his own sticker kit if required. (We decided to stay 'neutral')

This project included a lot of development of the ABS Vac form and other procedures which caused endless delays. All metal parts are electroplated etc etc.

enjoy
