Title: Cooler Thermostat Fan Switch
Post by: SpitFireRSA on January 24, 2017, 09:53:56 am
Hi Guys

In effort to keep my 690 on the cooler side, I have been looking for one of these:

http://www.rally-raidproducts.co.uk/thermostat-switch-ktm-690

Is there perhaps a local supplier, or am I wasting my time :) ?

Alternative would be a manual switch ?

TIA !

I've been looking for the same thing for my 990 with no success. KTM part no 83035045000; don't know if it's the same part but it seems to be less than half the price of your link.
I've been contemplating getting my brother in law to send one from the states. :P

Terrible timing mine just arrived from the UK a week ago and you could have scored free shipping

Not sure about the thread size being the same but the fan switch on a  640 normally operates on 84-88. There's a one of the Kawasakis that also uses it but they're extremely expensive like close to a R1000

Howzit. I have a KTM 625 SXC. Same motor as the 640 Adv LC4. I recently changed my fan switch (6 months ago?) and put in a suzuki fan switch. Was way cheaper than the KTM part and makes the fan kick in a few degrees sooner than my OEM part. Mine was faulty and the fan would never come on and that's why I changed it. A mate of mine has a bike workshop and also rides the 640 ADV and instructed me to use this. I can find out the part number if you need? But as long as the threads are right it should work in your application!
Hope you come right!

I also have a 625 SXC so would be interested in a cooler fan switch.

Saving some bucks is always welcome  :thumleft:

Hmm, I phoned KTM CT a moment ago, mentioned the part numbers are different from the 640 to the 690 and concluded that they are not the same.

Don't mean to cross-pollinate, but found this:

" Get a thermostat switch for a Suzuki LTZ400. The Suzuki LTZ400 is a Kawasaki KFX-400 is an Arctic Cat DVX-400. Suzuki makes it and sells it to Kawasaki and Arctic cat.

I got mine from MRcycles and installed it and it works fine. "

Will see if I can get specs and a price on it today... Maybe we can compare part numbers ?

one of these heat settings should do it for you.

http://www.banggood.com/KSD9700-250V-5A-45-120-Thermostat-Bimetal-Temperature-Switch-Normally-Open-p-979890.html?rmmds=search

These switches do exhibit quite a large Schmitt switching hysteresis.

Suzuki South wanted R1350 for it  ....

Trying a couple of other places - last resort:

i stopped at the hardware shop and bought a little ON/OFF toggle switch (R19) and do manual control of the fan for now

currently my fan is wired to just run all the time but i want to have it OFF on startup, OFF during warmup and OFF on the highway at speed

i'll try and source a radiator fan switch for cheaper - saw some on ebay for R80

Yeah, I hear you on that ..

The nice thing with that, is that you can choose when to run it, but still have the switch kick in when the threshold temp is met.

Best of both worlds then :)

I have a manual override switch & the thermal switch from the KTM fan kit, as the SXC doesn't come standard with a fan.

I welded up an adaptor to fit the thermal switch, as the thread sizes were different.

Checked yesterday. The suzuki part that I have deos fit the 690. My SXC too did not come with a fan but I have the after market one fitted - previous owner's endeavour. With this switch, I haven't had cooling problems even in slow technical riding and in Lowveld sweltering heat. Must also be the Wynn's antifreeze i used! :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Fixed the switch to the handlebar and did a temporary installation / test It works just grand !

Only problem I have, and this may just be my OCD, is that when the switch is " ON ", the fan is off.

This can be fixed with a slight hackjob moving one of the wires / contact surfaces, but I think I will just live with it the way it is :)

Going to get me some waterproof connectors and install it properly over the weekend.. Hopefully !

Will post some pics if I can.

This just in from MotoHut - http://motohut.co.za/

" That OEM Suzuki radiator fan switch is R525. With lead time of 1-2 days"

I am sure that's ex VAT, but I am def getting one :thumleft:

Anyone in CT area want me to order another one to cut on shipping costs ?  I have to order a chain and what not to go with that anyways.

Change your mindest - when the switch is "ON" then the radiator thermal switch is "ON" if it is "OFF" then the thermostat fan switch is "OFF"  ;D

OCD solved  :thumleft:

Nice ! At what temperature does the switch get triggered ?

By looks of it it's just a new switch with an adaptor. Could briefly explain how you made that and what was used for it ?

Maybe someone in future could copy your method  :thumleft:

Evansv, I noticed that you are running silicone hoses as well, did that make a difference in cooling ?
Title: Re: Cooler Thermostat Fan Switch
Post by: evansv on January 27, 2017, 06:30:34 am
It is just an adapter.

The reason I did this was that I wasn't prepared to pay R640 + VAT for the KTM 640 switch, as I already had this switch with the enduro fan kit. I'm not sure what the temperature range is. The part number for the kit is 59065041044. I have a manual override switch as well, so I just put the fan on when I'm in traffic, or heavy off road stuff.

The thread for the radiator was 14mm metric fine & the switch I had was 10mm metric fine. I bought a 14mm metric fine bolt & a 12mm metric fine nut. I cut the 14mm bolt to the correct length the & drilled a 8mm hole through the centre. I then welded the 12mm nut onto the remaining 14mm bolt head. Viola. So far so good.

Total cost R36 + a stainless steel welding rod & a bit of black paint.

I don't know if the hoses made a difference to temperature, as I don't have a temperature gauge. I got the hoses in the UK & fitted them, as mine were a bit tired. I also tried running Evans (no relation) waterless coolant, but changed over to standard Motal when a hose came off on a trip. At least water can be used with the Motal coolant.

I tried 2 different ones for my 690.  The one with the correct thread pitch was of a LTZ400 Suzuki quad.  The one of a Big Boy!!! which had a Honda copy engine, did not work.

Suzuki part no. 17680-50F70

My apologies for digging up an old thread, busy part shopping for 690 'essentials' and this was one of the items.  ;D

From what I've read it seems like there are 4 options:

1. Suzuki part 17680-50F70. Is the general consensus that the Suzuki switch is the best way to approach this? At which temp does it activate the fan? Not sure on current cost

2. Another option is the Trailtech fan switch/meter. You can manually adjust the temp for when the fan kicks on. $89 excl. shipping = R1100

3. Add a manual on/off switch like what @SpitFireRSA did. Not sure if fans auto on/off is retained by adding the switch.

4. Fan temp switch sensor  from another KTM. Not sure on current cost

I will still have to query with KTM which of these will void the bikes warranty

Hi Miks

1. Suzuki part 17680-50F70. Is the general consensus that the Suzuki switch is the best way to approach this? At which temp does it activate the fan? Not sure on current cost

-- Try MotoHut - http://motohut.co.za/contact_us - they had the best prices last time I checked. I didn't go with this as option 3 is working just dandy.

2. Another option is the Trailtech fan switch/meter. You can manually adjust the temp for when the fan kicks on. $89 excl. shipping = R1100

-- Cannot comment on this - but it looks good.

3. Add a manual on/off switch like what @SpitFireRSA did. Not sure if fans auto on/off is retained by adding the switch.

-- As mentioned - this was enough for me right now. Yes, it's a bit of a mission hitting the on off button when you want it - but it works.  KTM sold me the switch and didn't mention anything about warranty. Oh - and the auto on/off is retained as you are merely wiring in a second switch to do the same job.

4. Fan temp switch sensor from another KTM. Not sure on current cost

-- Yes, also a possibility.

Fitted the lower temp fan switch yesterday and replaced all the coolant while busy  :ricky:

At how many 'bars' of temp does the standard switch come on? I forgot to check before fitting the new switch so have no comparison.

Depending on the bike and ambient temperature, 1 or 2 bars from the top

Since I've fitted the switch, it comes on 3 bars from the top then the temp drops and it goes off - I guess it works  :)

I am amazed at all these posts above, as no-one mentions switching-temperature?
Goodluck mounting one with a higher temp!

Also, any automotive parts shop will have a catalogue of these things, and there's a few cars (some Suzuki) which have the exact-fit switch.
Better still, this catalogue also lists the switching temperature, pick & choose.
Best, they're very cheap, contrary to bike part prices or the daylight=robbery price of Rally Raid!

It seems I have to do this, as quite frankly the info on this thread is useless.

This is the wrong switch to mount!
It may fit, dunno, but wrong it remains - as there's only 1 terminal present leaving the radiator itself the other.
The fan draws quite some current, not a good idea to chase this through the radiator!
Sure, if you want to DIY or add a relay or.... suit yourself.
Btw, it also is too cold, is must be close to the thermostat-opening temperature.
Best is to aim for some 92-95C, which is cooler than the OEM switch, on a 2018 Husky 701 some 106C!

I put in a Suzuki LTZ400 switch into my 690 a couple of years ago.  Was about R200 then.

I did now too, it's perfect fit and comes with a new O-ring.
Comes On at 93C, falls Off at 88C, a fairly standard hysteresis.
Price R 550.- .... costly but it saves me scrounging catalogues at various spares shops.
Having done this my bike has a way bigger thermal reserve.
I also have that Greek fanswitch-kit (just a thermoswitch override) on order, I'll use it for when the going gets slow.
