Thanks I'll give them a shot!

Call Adrian Schultz at Econotrans in Capetown.  He is a professional that has shipped hundreds of bikes all over the world, and is the goto guy for James Cargo...a strong endorsement.  One stop shop for crating as well.  They did it cheaper, faster and more securely than I could have done it myself.
He is currently shipping my bike back to NA after my SA tour.  PM me if you need more contact details.

Sheldyn, what have you decided regarding shipping your bike?

She got crated about 2 months ago.  Should be leaving SA any day now.  I took the cheap option with the shipping agent so I've had to wait for the container to get filled by other customers.

If you dont mind sharing - what is the cost and how does the exporting procedure work?

If you don't mind sharing - what is the cost and how does the exporting procedure work?

The quotes I received were all over the place.  The highest was R45,000 and the lowest I got was R14,000.

The procedure is a bit of a bitch.

Police clearance was basically a 2-day affair of running from license dept to police clearance centre then back to license dept and so on.  standing in queues etc.

One of the requirements from the US was to have the bike steam cleaned - easy enough once you find someone that does it.

The biggest problem is the US restrictions on imports.  If the bike wasn't originally manufactured for the US market then its almost impossible to import.  Or you can do it and do conversions when you get it into the US - extremely costly as it has to be done through one of their appointed mechanics.

I certainly wouldnt go through this process for any average bike.  Mine is over 25 years old and therefore considered a classic and doesnt have to conform to all of the EPA and DOT requirements.  I sold my 1200GSA before leaving SA - it would have been a nightmare getting legal on the road here.

Probably the toughest part of the whole process is that there seems to be so little information out there to assist you.  I had to figure out every step of the way - the shipping agents didnt have a clue.

I still haven't received the bike so I will let you know if I did it all correctly in due course  :imaposer:

Sheldyn, I presume that the police clearance was needed as you were doing a permanent export from South Africa and not just temporary to go riding around the USA?
