Title: LONG LASTING ROAD TYRE FOR MY GS LC???
Post by: AlanDoyle on February 07, 2017, 08:01:15 am
Hi Guys,

I have been searching the internet for the best rear tyre for mileage. Can anyone point me in the right direction? 170/60 R17

Seems all the good tyres for mileage are not imported into SA?

You actually have just one of two choices - Anakee 3 or Conti Trail Attack 2. Both are freely available in SA.

I believe also that there is a Pirelli Scorpion tyre, but as far as I know they make a trail and rally tyre - I don't know if they really have a road biased tyre as such....Maybe someone with more knowledge on them can give some input

@Gryshond is on his 3rd LC I think. Good person to ask for tyre advice

If you're doing tar exclusively, Michelin Pilot Road 4 will give good milage. Will not handle dirt though

I believe these Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires are quite a good option.  Have ordered for my 1190 but not had a chance to put them on yet.  Rated better than the Anakee 3 in several comparisons.  Or if you want to go even more road than the Pirelli Angel GT.

let me add a THIRD choice: Continetal TKC 70 (not 80...)
More here: http://www.continental-tires.com/motorcycle/tires/motorcycle-tires/off-road-enduro/tkc-70

It s-p-a-n-s the 'gap' between TKC80 (offroad) and the Conti Trail Attack 2.
Apparently very good mileage indeed.

We stock these , and we also stock the Heidenau K60 Scout, some of the best mileage in the business, but need care on white lines in wet weather.
But your heading clearly says 'Road Tyre' so I think the TKC 70, Conti Trail Attack and Anakee 3's would fit your bill best...
YMMV.
Cheers

Ride in RAIN mode, and you will get more km out of a back tyre

Haven't ridden them myself but have heard good things about the Metzler Tourance Next

Yeah Pilot Road 4's are EXCELLENT for the road, esp in the wet.Had them on my NC750X, But definitely a 100% on tar tyre.

You only get 2000 kilometers from a front tire?  Wow, you must push the front when cornering and brake like a demon.

Nope...Not really....

Just stating a fact. I don't know why, but not because of the reasons you think

I had Bridgestone Battlewings on and i was verry happy with it. Back got 18k could probably do another 3000-4000 and the front had 24k and could also do a bit more.

Well thanks for the tip.  Won't get that TKC 80 front ever.  That is very low mileage for a front tire.  I hope it at least performs great in all conditions.  Have you used that type before with the same results?

I am on 12000km on my back tyre and 21 000km on my front and have Tourance Next on both. I commute everyday in Cape Town and not scared to wind it when there is a gap. I also pull the odd wheelie just to give you an indication of my riding style. What I have found that kills back tyres is long trips at around 160km/h and dirt rides. The back wheel spins up and it starts to chunk. Michelin Anakee I got 10k out of the back and 13k on the front.

1000 Km on the TKC 70 rear.
6000 Km on the Anlas Capra front.

I like this combo, haven't tried the TCK 70 on gravel, but it is great on tar. When I am back in SA, I will take it on a gravel trip.

I just bought a nice new rear tyre now, it's a Dunlop TrailSmart 170/60R17 from Neptune Tyres here in PE for R1,450-00 including fitment. I bought it and put it in the garage until my Tourance Next -  is finished, then Neptune Tyres will fit it for me. :thumleft:

Have a look at this excellent review:

Reminds me of an Anakee 2, which can't be a bad thing.

Or you could just fit a good Sport Touring road tire like a Bridgestone BT 023. I get around 13K on a rear on the NC700X, some guys get a lot more. You will not be disappointed. Right size is available for your bike.

I got 6500km on the BT 023 on my 390 Duke. Do not recommend.

Try get Michelin Pilot Street variant rather.

Hi Guys,
I am rather surprised at the Dunlops which some have fitted,,,,,,,,
When i was after a set of tires i went the "google " route & looked up Dunlop , as i was rather impressed with them on a previous bike.
I found the South African Dunlop site & did the online query , the one where you fill your bike details in etc,,,,,,,,,,,,
Anyhow i received a response from Dunlop SA within a few days informing me that there was no suitable Dunlop combination for my 2015 BMW R1200GSA ?????
So , i have been under the impression that there is nothing suitable from Dunlop for my Bike ???
Is this then an incorrect impression ? Do Dunlop make a set of tires that are suitable for use on the R1200 GSA LC & are suitable dual purpose tyres ?

In the end i got Donford to fit a set of Anakee 3's  ,,,, having removed a Heidenou K60 (rear) and Pirelli Rally knobby (front). The Heidi / Pirelli combo seemed ok, but i didn't trust it at all in the wet , or on wet surfaces.........
Regs,
Jon
