Title: Let the "FUN" begin. Toe breek die Yamaha
Post by: woody1 on April 24, 2017, 09:27:51 am
This is not a Ride Report but since it was a BIG event in the family, I want to share it.

Couple of years ago Tom van Brits sold his son's XT125 to me for our little pensioneater.

We taught the man to ride a bike in the park just up the street.

Took the bike with when we went to the farm so that he could ride a bit.
Also did a trip to Kilroy's Nkandla with Subie where he could ride a bit.

I believe that if you do not have a licence, you do not ride on the road.... finish and klaar.

So the oke really did not have a lot of time to hone his riding skills.

So he managed to get his learners licence about 2 weeks ago and I promised him that we would do a Breakfast Run as soon as time permits.

So Sunday was the first time we could make good on my promise.

Decided to take it easy and hit tar to Boswell Wilkie Circus near Meyerton.

On the way there we did not reach 90 km/h.

Me and Ma in the front, him in the middle and Ouboet and his wife riding shotgun.

Well maybe he is just a bit nervous so I let it be, but I knew from one of our farm trips he managed to get up to 110 / 120.

So we have a great breakfast  at the Cafe... really great food and great prices... check it out... .http://www.circus.co.za/

On the way back his brother decide to go straight home to Alberton.

So that left just the 2 bikes.

Close to Brakpan I see this left arm go up... thumbs UP and he is right on my tail.

So I speed up... and he stay on my tail.

Got home and I ask him where did the horses come from....

Well my kids do not lie and the answer...

Pa ek het 5de rat GEKRY....... :laughing4: :ricky: :ricky:

Welkom to many safe miles Pierre.

Checked out the bike when we got home and the clutch lever had a bit of play.
Took it apart and found it was worn a bit.
Quickly turned a small bush and fixed this for him.

So this little bike was well used and needed a cleanup.

Pierre is a RED person and when we talked about fixing up his little Yammie he insisted that it becomes a red bike.

Ja ja I know it is a Honda colour, but funny enough, these little buggers were also available in red.

So I ordered a new tail piece and a headlight thingy and I could choose between 4 colors available ex-stock ...Well done Yamaha  :thumleft:

He is as happy as can be in Brakpan with the result  :laughing4:

Since he became mobile he is a different kid.

Now he can ride to his music lesson, his karate, his extra maths lessons and running shopping trips for his mother to the shops.
He likes to get on the bike and not sit in front of the computer anymore. :ricky: :ricky:

Title: Re: Let the "FUN" begin.

Update.

So the Little Red Rocket did not really make it in the big world.
It would run out of steam quickly on any small hill.

So I had a search and found some Big Bore Kits...but mostly 150 CC

THEN I found a 180 CC BBK in Taiwan for around R 1200.00. Piston, barrel, gaskets the tootie.

Braam at Shimwels did the conversion and I must say I am impressed with the performance.

With the sprockets it still is not very much faster, but riding up mountains she keeps  a good speed now.

So things happend in our lives and we moved down to Riversdale in the Western Cape.

Every weekend we go for a rides. From Gysmanshoek to Barrydale, Riversdale to Stilbaai via Vermaaklikheid,
Riversdale to Malgas, and every day to school and friends.

Then it happend the CALL... Pa die bike wil nie start nie.

Off to the school...pissing with rain find the laaitie next to his Red Rocket that is now a paper weight.

Check petrol = OK
Check spark + Not OK.

No spare spark plug to replace and shops are closed.

So he push his bike home.

He tell me the laaities at school unplugged his spark plug cap earlier the day. He got it going rode home after school to fetch his hockey stuff. Back to school, practice and then it went DEAD.

So that night we did some more checks.  Found another spark plug in the toolbox.

NO SPARK.

Measure the plug cap... WTF, diss no reading not even on 20k if it had a resistor in.

Wow lekker easy fix. Wait for tomorrow buy a new spark plug cap and away we go.

Next day new spark plug cap obtained from CCC Motorcycles in Riversdal... nice shop

Home, put it on... NO SPARK.   Ag nee.

Find the specs on the coil... with my MM measure it... Shit it looks wrong... Back to CCC Motorcycles... Yes he has one.

Back home put it on... NO SPARK... Shit now only the CDI and pickup coil left.

Tried to measure the pickup coil... Nothing no reading.

So on Saturday while he goes and play hockey in Oudshoorn I strip the stator cover.

Wragtig the pickup coil is DISS.

I never had a pickup coil go faulty before so for met this was new.

Phone Shimwells... Yes we can order one for you, but it comes compete Stator and pickup as one part number.. and thank you meneer that will be 4 weeks waiting on back order and R 1700.00.

Eish Stator is fine, this little pickup is a loose part why not sell it separate...  nee ons moet vaseline saam neem..... :imaposer:

So my trusted ebay was consulted....you can buy the pickup coil by itself, but I found the complete stator / pickup coil in Germany for R 727.93 and at the same store the CDI for R 174,88 and it will be on a courier and should arrive 1 to 15 June 2018.

Well he is bikeless and pappie does not feel like MOMS TAXI so he was given the XL 600's keys....with strick instructions not to ride around town, not to drag race his fiends on their 125's... Huistoe, skooltoe en weer huistoe.

He is still smiling and wish the parts take a bit longer to arrive.  :laughing4:

:peepwall: :laughing4:

I love my new town and the one and only bike shop in town.

Go there this morning...

:imaposer:

:laughing4:

Is daai coils in para of serie?

:3some: :laughing4:

Update time.

So the stator and CDI arrived.

So we started by replacing the stator assembly.  No spark ..shit !!!!!!!
Plug in the CDI... POP goes the 12 Volt fuse... shit !!!!!!

Moving into the new house so this project goes on hold.

In the meantime I search the web.  The CDI physically looks the same.  Even the plug is 100% the same but it has a different number on it.
Turns out that although the XTz and the YBR 125 share the same motor, the electrical parts are not 100% the same.  The YBR has a lot of fancy extra stuff like fuel gauge, rev counter etc.

Every now and then I would spend a few spare minutes looking at the wiring and try to see if I get spark.

Funny thing is that it would spark once and then nothing.  Checked for loose connections, corroded connections, could not find any.

So yesterday with our FREE HOLIDAY I went out to the garage.

First on the agenda was to take the chainsaw carb out and boil it in my favorite LEMON JUICE pot.
After this the chainsaw starts on the first pull... Very happy.

Then I went and sat in front of the little XTz  and I remembered when I did the restoration on the 1958 BSA Bantam I had a spark issue on the little cdi thing that it had on.
On the BSA I followed all the online instructions and wired it as per the info. We could not get spark and I decided to turn two wires around.  Well it sprang into life every time on the first kick.

So I had a look at the XTz.  The pulse coil has a green and a blue wire.  So I had it connected green to green and blue to blue.
No spark and maybe a little spark every now and then.

So I decided that I have nothing to loose.

I connected the blue to the green and the green to the blue.

Pushed the starter and WOW big fat blue continuous spark ...What a relieve.

I thought it is just a coil that gets exited by the magnet passing over it...does not have to be positive or negative orientated.

So we put it together, got some fuel into the tank. Choke on and start......ooooo shit.
She sounds like timing is out...sounds like an internal backfire.
But once the engine is running she runs smooth... only on the START she has this off timing cough.

Pierre took it for a spin to the garage to fill her up with petrol.  Runs fine... only the internal cough on startup.

Any suggestions.
Thanks

Los hom so dit klink cool!! :lol8:

Spares in South Africa....SHIT we get ripped off  :dousing: :dousing: :dousing: :dousing:

Yamaha quoted R 1700.00 for the stator assembly. Our stator is fine only the pulser coil was faulty, but you cannot buy that part by its own.
Yamaha price R 1700.00 and on backorder
Price in Germany R 785.17

CDI.  Yamaha South Africa. R 8000.00  Yes Eight THOUSAND rand.
CDI from Germany sealed with the Yamaha codes etc...therefore a genuine part  R 188.63.

Problem is not when it is running Chris... Only when you push the STARTER it sounds like a backfire.

Maybe the battery is a bit pap after the long time not running. Charging at the moment will check later today when I get home.
