Title: Oasis-Sutherland on the Purple Hooligan: Better stick to gravel, dear...
Post by: Ri on April 27, 2017, 03:11:35 pm
Since the Hooligan's organ transplant surgery in July 2016, I've been grabbing any opportunity to ride it. There were some small rides on Saturdays and a longer ride here and there, but I was yearning for a more.

I mentioned this to Eikeboom, who was part of the group to Koedoeskloof Thumper Bash in August 2016. He said he was thinking of an overnighter to Oasis the weekend after the WC Bash. We looked for a few other riders and suddenly a road trip was born! The trip expanded from an overnighter to a weekender, taking in Oasis, Sutherland, Merweville, from I would head home, and for Eikeboom another day riding home along the West Coast. I would have loved to join him but I'm a contractor, and no work no pay  :-[

The third member of our group did enduro and cross country on his KDX200 before, and had only recently gotten a DRZ400. This would be his first long trip, and he had made up his own luggage plate and support struts for the DRZ. He would only be joining us as far as Sutherland, from where he planned to go home.

We would be 2 x DR650 and 1 x DRZ400. Our route was planned and our camping spaces booked. It would be a bit hectic - Bellville to Oasis on Friday afternoon, Oasis to Merweville on Saturday, and Merweville to Kuilsrivier on Sunday, around 400+ kms each the last two days. But as I’m fond of saying (and my co-riders fear hearing as they end up picking up the pieces), how bad can it be? … It can be bad :o

On Friday I planned to leave work at 14:00. We were having celebrations for reaching milestones, with a pat-on-the-back session in the morning and a snacks-and-"suip" session in the afternoon. I reckoned this time could be spent more productively on the Hooligan :ricky:  Mr Made-This-Myself said he could leave at any time, and we arranged to meet at The Hollow Tree in Bellville at 14:00.

At 14:00 it was hot, and I was all kitted out and ready to ride, my co-workers casting mildly curious (and in once instance very envious) glances. By 15:00 I was livid and on the verge of abandoning Mr Had-To-Turn-Back-I-Forgot-My-Cellphone-At-Home-And-Then-There-Was-This-Accident, when he came roaring into the parking area, complete with GoPro on top of his helmet. I jumped on the Hooligan, praying I wouldn’t drop it as I pushed it backwards, and we were off, roaring through late afternoon traffic towards Wellington, where Eikeboom waited with amazing patience.

At the nursery outside Wellington introductions were made, as Eikeboom hadn’t yet met Mr Lots-Of-Drag-On-This-GoPro-It-Hurts-My-Neck. I bragged about the leather patches on my riding pants that covered a hole made by the exhaust last time I fell (coming back from Oasis, nogal) and we discussed our route to Oasis (fastest) as time and light was running out.

We hit the road, and a vicious wind, as we headed around the mountain, through Ceres and into Port Alfred Hamlet, where we filled up. The guys have puny fuel tanks, and the Hooligan is a thirsty bike.

We continued into the waning light and biting wind. Eikeboom made the call to let me lead the way, probably reasoning that as the least experienced rider in the group, I would set a cautious pace. Hitting Gydo Pass, hooligan mode set in and I stormed onwards and upwards, barely scraping through the corners at a speed I almost couldn’t control, my hand frozen on the throttle, telling myself to slow the HECK DOWN.

On a tight corner, calamity struck.

I was drifting too close to the white line, telling myself to slow down and turn in, when I caught a glimpse of a Jetta approaching. Slow down! I chided myself, Turn IN! I was looking around the bend, and thought I’d scraped through, when suddenly I felt a long and solid impact on my right side, and then I was skidding across the tarmac under my bike, watching automotive parts scatter, apparently dramatically trailing sparks.

Swearing harshly at myself for buggering up the trip for everyone, and destroying my bike to boot, I skidded to a halt in the middle of the oncoming traffic lane. To my huge surprise, my destroyed bike was still idling, and I reached forward and hit the kill switch. I jumped up and ran to the Jetta to see if the occupants were OK, wondering how I was going to get back to Prince Alfred Hamlet to report the accident, and what about the rest of the trip.

Eikeboom quickly picked up my bike, pushed it to the side of the road, and started straightening things. Mr Surprising-Presence-Of-Mind flagged down a passing police car, and the two officers got out and sternly started taking details. I wouldn’t have to go back to Prince Alfred Hamlet after all.

After giving out details and taking photos, I walked back to my destroyed bike, only to find it wasn’t. The rear side luggage rack, handlebar, Baskbuster and even front brake lever, had deep gouges in them, but were still in good working order. The back brake lever was bent double and stuck on top of the footpeg, and the front triangle at the tip had sheared off cleanly, probably the source of the impressive sparks. It was foothandled off the peg and bent forward, and I was good to go. I was okay, bit of a bump on my leg and elbow, my newly patched suit leg torn and a small hole at the elbow.

Rips at elbow and knee downwards.

Meanwhile, huge lorries came screaming down the pass, often well over the side or middle line of the road.

The parts I’d seen scattering had all come from the Jetta that now sported deep dents along the driver side of the car, front to back, and a destroyed side mirror.

I was suddenly overwhelmed by awe, love and gratitude for my awesome Father God who saved me. There had been a steady stream of traffic and trucks, but at the moment I impacted, there was only me and the Jetta. Except for the two bumps, I suffered no damage, and didn’t even feel any effects of adrenaline like nausea and shaking. I was loved and protected! My God is great! :lol8:

To Eikeboom’s surprise, I declared myself ready to continue. We stopped at the lookout at the top of Gydo Pass, and then raced the light to Oppieberg.

Eikeboom waiting patiently for the photographers ::)

At the turn-off towards Cederberg Oasis, since Mr KTM-Headlight seemed to have the best light, Eikeboom asked him to ride in front and provide light, as DR headlights are quite pathetic.  But it turns out the LED spotlights I’d bought from AndyF were kickass and provided more than enough light for me and Eikeboom, who stuck close by, while Mr KTM-Headlight was soon swallowed up in the dark. As we neared Oasis, Eikeboom asked me to fall back and follow his pace, as he was concerned about dips and turns in the road in the dark. I crawled along behind Eikeboom, wishing we could exceed 30kph… I didn’t think the road was *that* bad! :imaposer: I appreciated the concern.

We trundled into Oasis in the dark, and quickly set up tent. Gerrit kindly offered us the use of some mattresses, and the 3-quarter filled up my 1-biker tent from edge to edge, with just enough space for gear alongside. It was awesome :lol8:

The we went to get some of Gerrit’s splendid ribs  :thumleft:  My leg was throbbing a bit by this time, so Eikeboom handed over 2 Myprodol and I washed it down with Dry Lemon. Well, mostly Dry Lemon.

Just a little bump  8)

Mr Braaimaster was a little jealous when he saw the size and quality of these ribs. Since I couldn’t possibly eat all of that, I shared some and packed the rest for padkos, but in the morning my padkos had mysteriously dwindled to two ribs :xxbah:

We crept into our tents, I plugged my ears, popped 2 more Myprodol, and slept the sleep of the dead…. not. Maybe it’s old age, but I’m finding it harder to sleep when I’m away from home. Whatever, that’s no reason to stay home. It was cold, and I put on everything I had, snuggled deep, and snoozed while listening to the others snoring.

To be continued :lamer:

Early on Saturday I was done snoozing. I crept out of the tent like a backwards caterpillar and went in search of coffee and nice photo opportunities. Everyone I saw asked how my leg was (a little sore, a lot swollen) and I basked in my 15 seconds of fame.

Dudes still snoring sleeping

At 08:00 I went looking for my companions, as Eikeboom said we should be up no later than 08:00. I found the snorers up and about, and on their way to find breakfast. I finished packing and went for a shower. When I came back, Eikeboom was finishing packing while Mr Convivial was chatting to the bikers at the next spot about their nice bikes.

We backtracked to the Kagga Kamma turn off, and hit Katbakkies. Just after the turn off, at the top of the hill, we stopped for photos and a quick bite. I warned Mr Convivial that there was no way he would reach Sutherland that day and still get home, and that he would have to stay over at Sutherland. He looked unhappy and called his wife to let her know of the change of plan. All things sorted, he was smiling again and we were off.

Eikeboom rode to my right and slightly behind me, while Mr Dust-Gives-Me-Hayfever insisted on riding in front. Eikeboom asked him to be polite and check which way the wind was blowing, and ride on that side of the road to minimalise the dust, and he nodded. After choking on Mr Convivial's dust for a few kilometers, I told him to push off ahead or fall behind, because he was kicking up huge amounts of dust which just hung in the air. With a slightly injured look he insisted that we also kicked up dust, but I pointed out his tread pattern (full off-road) as opposed to ours (Mitas E07) and he agreed.

Mr Dustmite roared off into the distance, and we followed after waiting a beat for the dust to settle, enjoying the day. The road was in good condition, I was getting better at holding my line, and the views were stupendous. At one point the guys stopped for whatever reason, possibly for a comport break, and waved me on. It was a beautiful day and the weather was gorgeous. I opened up and roared up Katbakkies Pass, stopping near the top to wait for the guys and to take photos.

Where Katbakkies joined the R355, we turned left and headed to Tankwa Padstal for some quick refreshments. By now it was sweltering, and poort Mr Overheated stripped off his jacket and top to dip his head in the chlorinated cement dam outside. I quickly ducked inside looking for an energy drink to revive me, and took some photos. This really is a treasure trove, and I love coming here. They even stock violin and banjo strings for the once-in-a-year wedding players.

How very fortunate for you that "visit to Karoo farm" encompasses this area. :deal:
Fair warning though: if you're running around Gough in shorts in winter, you are going to swelter in the Karoo heat, even in spring. :dousing:

From Tankwa Padstal, we took the R303 / Swartrug road into the Kouebokkeveld. The plan was to reach Merweville that day, but since we left Oasis so late we knew it wasn't going to happen. We would still do Ouberg Pass though, and stay over in Sutherland.

Turn off onto R356 to Sutherland

We then turned left towards Sutherland, me in front for some reason. Relishing not being in Mr Convivial's dusty trail for a change, I opened up, and Eikeboom had quite a task chasing me down to explain that he had miscalculated, and the turn off to Ouberg pass was a kilometer or so back. Except he didn't explain it that succinctly, with the result that Mr What?-My-Earphones-Were-On and I waited at the Matjiesfontein T-junction to find out what's going on, while Eikeboom waited for us at the Ouberg turnoff. We eventually found each other, and continued on to Ouberg Pass.

At the turn-off, Mr Hayfever managed to regain pole position and was off, while Eikeboom and I followed at a more leisurely pace until we reached the Ouberg Pass turnoff. Here we found Mr Convivial with concerns about some crack in the frame or a loose screw, or some such.

Eikeboom and Mr Convivial promptly unrolled their not-inconsiderable tool bags, and tried to attend to the situation. Me, being very mechanically minded, assisted by keeping out of their way and taking these beautiful pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Riding up Ouberg Pass, I did the opposite of what I usually do, because what I usually do is fall  :imaposer:

On my last day ride, where I fell many, many times, Grazer remarked on my lack of throttle control. He had a point. My automatic response when I was in trouble was to pray and open the throttle, and hope grace and the bike would get me out of it. This worked, sort of, in that I didn't fall immediately. But I would still often fall, as it was a 50/50 chance whether I would regain or lose control later on, and usually I was fortunate that when I did fall, I was not in as much trouble as I would have been before. But still, to avoid falling had to become the aim here.

To this end, Mr Convivial took me gravel riding in some dodgy area just over Sir Lowries Pass, where recent veld fires and rain had made the road more hazardous than I was comfortable with. I did, in the end, manage to practice some throttle control.

Ouberg Pass is incredibly beautiful, with steep climbs and dramatic drops. It is also terrifying for a relative newbie, as it is a washed out 2-spoor with gashes and biggish round rocks and rock shelves that defy tires to get a grip. My terror was compounded by the fact that Eikeboom kept to the right and slightly back of me, meaning that if I didn't keep my line, or lost control, I could potentially take him with me as I plunged over the edge.

Shaking with adrenaline, I crept up the shaley pass in 1st gear, hugging the stone wall, throttling down slightly when the going got more shifty. At the first steep hairpin bend, I came to a gasping stop, shoulders frozen and unable to turn the bike. Eikeboom tried to show me how to take the turn, but I was unable to mimic his slow and flowing movement. Instead I turned like a learner drive - twisting the handlebars then straightening, twist then straighten. It was the jerkiest turn ever, but I managed it without falling - a big win for me.

At the second hairpin bend I stopped again, but this time I composed myself and took the plunge/turn. The video clip of me reaching the top of Ouberg Pass must be the slowest ascent ever  :imaposer:

But whatever. I'd made it without falling. Celebratory pats on the back all round!

Beautiful vistas

The sun sank quickly after we crested, and we were still about 50km away from Sutherland, which meant another night time ride. Mr Convivial sped ahead, stopping briefly now and then to check we were still behind him, later telling tense tales of death-by-bunny-and-buck near misses.

Eikeboom stuck to the safe haven of my pool of LED lighting, and we sped on into the night. It got really cold really quickly when the sun went down. At one point, a bunny hopped across my path and tested the space between my and Eikeboom's bikes, but lucky for him there was plenty and he escaped unharmed after a few ricochets. At around 8 pm we roared into Sutherland, stiff and cold, and headed for The White House. We didn't mean to roar, but that place is so quiet!

Sadly for us there were no rooms at the White House, as there were a coterie of astronomy students studying the night sky (queue Mr Dad-Jokes). The lady of the establishment pointed us in the direction of a house to rent, and Eikeboom made the deal. Mr Convivial said he'd like to camp on the lawn. Eikeboom and I roared with laughter. Karoo towns mos don't do lawn.

Soup-and-bun dinner and some fortifying sherries later, we retired to our villa, where I soaked in the bath for probably an hour, not something I'm fond of doing, but my leg was throbbing a bit. After everyone had cleaned up, we took turns hooking various devices into the TV, and admired the photos each of us had taken during our journey.

Then it was off to sleep, and an early rise in the morning to get fuel for the long road home.

The White House has a pool! Who knew.

As per usual, I was up early. I woke the house Bunnies and we fought over the coffee and milk portions before getting dressed and packing quickly to go fill up our fuel tanks before the proprietor of the station went to attend church.

The inhabitants of Sutherland probably didn't appreciate the roar of Mr Considerate's exhaust at 08:20, as it is louder than even my busted, air-sucking, whumping Airage exhaust. We stopped at the petrol station and Eikeboom braved the fearsomely licky dog that protected the owners' premises, by dint of loving you to death, to awaken the owner.

The surly-looking owner, who is actually quite nice, waived the R20 after-hours fee, explaining that it was to discourage the locals from knocking him up at 00:23 to put in 23c of fuel. Reminded me of my student days, when we would scrounge for small change, and 76c worth of fuel was enough to get you home

Also turns out the friendly puppy had just pitched up at his house one day. He had asked around but since he couldn't find the owner, he had decided to keep the mutt, and had had her spayed. She now follows his steps doggedly  ;D

Mr Convivial asked the owner for a bolt. The owner unlocked his workshop, scrounged around a bit, and offered two, but Mr Convivial rejected one. Eikeboom and I stayed to fill up while Mr Convivial raced home to fit his new bolt. Eikeboom soon received a message, could he please ask the owner for the rejected bolt as well? Since turns out that might actually be the size needed. Fine. Eikeboom patiently knocks up the owner again, who patiently opens up his workshop again to fetch the other bolt. We pay and leave. Later on Mr Budget-Conscious complains that we didn't need to BUY the second bolt, as he could've left the first one at the workshop. At R8.00 a bolt...  :eek7:

The owner of the establishment we had rented for the night came to inspect and lock up the premises, and we were ready to leave. From here on, our paths split. Eikeboom would head to Fraserburg, Calvinia and the West Coast, and I would head home to the Northern Suburbs with Mr Convivial via Matjiesfontein, Karoopoort, Ceres and Bainskloof.

Since we had to put fuel in early, we were ready to leave by about 09:30. We said our good byes, and hit the road. I hadn't had a decent cup of coffee yet, so we enquired of the house owner, who directed us just up the road to the Blue Moon, which was open for about 2 hours until church or afternoon siesta started, can't remember which. Lovely place, quite decent coffee.

We then hit the road, and reached the Keurkloof turn-off towards Karoopoort at about 11:00. Here, I pointed out to Mr Convivial that his one support strut of his luggage rack had broken off completely. I suggested putting his heavy luggage on my bike, but he pooh-poohed me, and started tying up the strut with what seemed like washing line and duct tape.

Barely 20 kms away, I came upon Mr Washing-Line-And-Duct-Tape standing in the road again.

The pesky strut had escaped the strict confines of the washing line and the duct tape. A better solution was needed. He was very keen to knock up a nearby farmer to get access to a welding machine, because all these farms have welding machines. I said there's no farm nearby. He said we just passed one. I said I don't think it's a farm, it was completely devoid of any agricultural activity.

I insisted that Mr Convivial put his heaviest luggage on my bike, although I quailed at having to handle the extra weight. I could barely handle my own weight! But I wasn't keen on spending another hour next to the road while Mr Convivial DIY'ed more solutions. We transferred the luggage, and lightened the load somewhat by removing the tool bag to put on his bike.

Loaded!

Mr Convivial, as far as I am concerned, should now tie up and be ready to go. But no. Mr Convivial is kneeling by his bike again, using branches and duct tape to strengthen his struts, remarking that the people who bent the struts must've cracked it. I look at the strut pipes and suggest that although the cracks were the benders' fault, perhaps he should consider sturdier material when reconstructing his support structs.

He kindly shares the beer with me.

I joke on our shared WhatsApp group that I'm going to get home in the dark again. Everyone LOLs - It's barely 12:00.

A bunch of bikers zip past us single file and I wave them on. Mr Convivial hoped they would stop, as he would like a metal piece with which to strengthen his strut(s). I'm surprised - I thought he had things well in hand. His doleful look says "no". I step into the road like a copper and firmly put up my hand to stop the next biker. Turns out to be a lovely lady by name of Tjoppie, who promptly jumps off her 800GS, takes a selfie with me, and then gets on with the job of helping Mr Convivial. The two bikers and support vehicle behind her suggests that we've intercepted a serious tour. They had spent the night in Gamkaskloof, and were on their way to Tankwa Karoo.

Selfie with the awesome Tjoppie

They swarm around Mr Convivial's bike. One of the bikers up ahead turns back to see what the hold up is, and he has heavy-duty cable ties on him. They use Mr Convivial's metal Allen keys to strengthen his support struts with the cable ties. 10 minutes later they hop on their bikes, and disappear in a haze of dust. Mr FIFY's bike resembles a hedgehog with all the cable ties sticking out.

We finally get on our bikes. For me it's a bit shaky with the unaccustomed extra weight. I pull off, hoping Mr Hayfever would ride behind and check that I'm okay with his luggage ready to topple me, but he duly passes. It's a lovely gravel highway, and we can travel at speed, meaning Mr Eat-My-Dust doesn't quite pull away from me. I ride behind him, swerving from the one side of the gravel road to the other, trying to stay out of his dusty entrails. He notices me swerving like a laden swallow, but keeps to the middle of the road, because his tire is a little bald and he felt it shake a bit back there.

As we near Karoopoort, with the extra load keeping my back wheel steady as a rock as I cross the shaley "middelmannetjies", I bite down on the gravel between my teeth and the hooligan kicks in. I open up, and gradually overtake Mr Eat-My-Dust. The torquey DRZ400 can't top the souped-up Hooligan for speed. I pass in a blaze of glorious dust and keep my speed high, childishly determined that he won't pass me again before we reach tar. Mr Eat-My-Dust sensibly stops and waits for my dust to settle, and then continues.

When I reach the Ceres T-junction, I come to a wobbly stop, take photo's and wait for Mr Done-And-Dusted.

Mr Done-And-Dusted stops on my heels, very thirsty as we hadn't stopped for a drink for 100kms (when I'm tired, I GOOI), and we buy him a bottle of cold water, and soft serves for us both. Delicious!

We hit the last stretch home. I eventually come to a wobbly halt in front of his house, and untie his bag as quickly as possible, then I'm off into the night, finally arriving home, in the dark, at 19:30.

I immediately WhatsApp Tom van Brits on Gough Island with photo's of my lower limb, which is looking quite poxy by this time even though it isn't really that painful. He offers some expert medical advice (aspirin, diclofenac, massage), which I follow religiously, and some expert riding advice (maybe motorbikes aren't for you) which I promptly ignore. After 3 weeks all the bruising was gone and the swelling was just slightly noticeable. Thanks Tom :thumleft:

All in all, it had been an awesome, awesome trip  :ricky:

Good laughts and great pictures....you got to ride more as your RR's is entertaining! That Tjoppie girl can ride that Gs800adv rather well and also a very good person, got respect for her. On tour where I act as their medic she called me dr Watson 😂😃 and had a nickname for almost everyone.

Thanks, I had great fun writing it!  O0

I'm conflicted. I don't really want to fall again, but it can add some lekker drama to a ride report  :imaposer:

So I enjoyed the trip thus far with my two companions very much. In spite of the accident and other minor niggles, it was really enjoyable and fun. But now it was time to be on my own, and I went further into the Karoo and along the West Coast while Ri and Pierre went back home.

I have made a 3 minute movie from the photos and footage from all three of us, as a sort of a summary of the trip. It will be posted here in due time.

Ri thank you for an eventful RR I am sure you will feel a lot more confident on a long ride with Mr Done-And-Dusted now that he has completed his apprenticeship in"running repair"(ship)  :) Respect for picking up the pieces after your slight mishap with the jetta and finishing your trip. Very happy it all ended safely . :thumleft:

Lekker RR Ri, was a good read indeed.   :thumleft:
Coincidentally met Pierre at the Zuma Must Fall march early April - we started chatting bike when I saw his Dizzer (minus the hedgehog spikes).  He mentioned the trip you guys did, and here I stumbled across it by chance now - and what an awesome read.  Glad that fall was not more serious.

Hehe pretty much how I started chatting with Pierre outside Flying Brick - that Dizzer is indeed eye catching, especially at night.

Thanks, I'm very grateful too; and you know what they say about kakiebos

Great RR Ri.
I have to ask ...do you take notes along the way or do you just have one of those memories ?
Hell you remember so much detail from your trips. I am jealous

Thanks McSack :thumleft:

In general my memory is poor - preoccupied with work stuff.
On a ride though I notice lots of detail, and although I don't take notes, I take lots of photo's that bring back memories. But I couldn't tell you most of roads we took, or the names of places we stopped, unless I took a photo or made a note of it.

Maybe try making voice memos. If I did a month long trip like you did, criss-crossing SA, the forum might crash from the RR  :lol8:

For sure, he got his whole bike home in one piece! :thumleft: It's great if you can DIY your own solutions.

Very nice RR, Ri!

Much respect for you on completing your trip after going toe-to toe with the VW, most riders would've folded like a cheap lawn chair and headed back home!

Thanks, but the bike was fine and I wasn't broken (much). I was delighted I could carry on. I'd really been looking forward to the trip: Ouberg Pass was on my wishlist, as well as the pass from Sutherland to Merweville (which we had to skip).

My mom was a theatre sister and had no patience or mercy for us; maybe because she had to deal with people who *really* had problems. If we had a complaint she told us to drink water, or gave us meds that had expired and were probably either ineffective or made things worse. So we learnt to suck it up, it's not that bad. :imaposer:

Hey Ri, what a lovely ride report, you write beautifully and what a laugh it must be to live in your head. This is a great inspiration to take the time to capture the memory with  lots of photos. You  must do more of them and shout when you feel like another long ride,  I will happily waddle along beside you on Kitty, hey maybe even the Irish Lass can join us if we are taking it at sane speeds.

Oh you know it!! :laughing4:  Thank you for the kind words :)

I always want to do long trips, but I don't really know where to go. Doing a trip with you and the Irish Lass would be awesome! - I'm going to keep you to your offer :ricky:
