Title: First bike and need some help deciding
Post by: PottieP on July 04, 2017, 06:33:05 pm
Hi,

I live in Orapa.

I had a plastic and it kicked my @rse.  No other notable bike experience.

The trip to the office is 10km round trip.

Lots of dirt roads everywhere to be explored in and around Orapa.

My hart says Husky 701, but will I see my @rse again.

My mind says CRF250 Rally, will look like a twat, but my neck will most probably last a bit longer.

The price of the Rally is just so high compared to what you get with the Husky 701.

I am not that good at swining spanners, but I am sure I can learn if I have to.

The closest Honda dealer is 530km from me and Husky delaler is 1000km.

The more I write here the the more I am thinking that buying a bike is not such a good idea...

I can get XR650 in ok nick for P45 000.

Those are my options for now.  I can't test drive the Rally or Husky, to far away...

Please help with advise.

Andre

Hi,

why do you guys say the 660R and not 701?

He basically said he can't handle bikes that are too powerful, at risk of getting injured I suppose. Nothing wrong with that.

The XT660 sounds like a great choice to me. Other option is XR650L.
Although depending on where you want to ride, a DRZ400 is also a great option.

I recently bought a 701. Loving the bike, but already some small issues. I would say that you need to keep to the Japanese bikes if you don't see yourself as mechanically inclined. Sounds like  you will be left to your own devices as far as service and repair is concerned.

All bikes need attention, but the 701 will need more than a 650 class Jap bike

The 701 & 690 are rockstars in their own rights but do you want to feed their habits daily?  ;D ;) The 660 & 650's are less stressed & it becomes more about the rider than the bike..

So now it is between the XT660R, XR650L and CRF250Rally

We are sort of making progress.

How difficult is it to work on these things?

Google and youtube is your friend and all.

How is the situation on availabilty of parts on the 660 and 650?

the 660 R is - in my opinion - a very capable and relatively UNDER-appreciated bike, since many (most?) look to acquire it's bigger brother, the 660 Z.

this can leave them selling at a relatively even-lower price point as compared to the 'gap' that existed in their pricing when the R and z were new...

So it is a very good choice - only thing i am less impressed with is having a silencer on each side, meaning you have to watch heat and soft-luggage on BOTH sides...

2 rental companies near us run small fleets of the 'R', with seemingly few problems.

Cheers, Chris
