Hi Murray,

The severe Dangers like wash aways will be marked with triple day glo stickers and no go areas as we don't want people cutting fields or sensitive areas.

Sorry I don't know garmin 62S but sat I rode 300km on my garmin Etrax 20 found it quite easy on the trails however the technical sections gets more interesting

Is the 300km range requirement for the rallye class same as last year? Most home built jobs like front/rear tank KTMs and 3 tank 690s are capable of 275km.  Not even sure my CRF450X with 25 litres will get to that.  I certainly never got more on an Amageza stage.  An RR will do 300km without breaking a sweat.

Hi Bill
Thanks for the feedback it is most welcome, saying 300km to be safe but it currently measures about 270km with some technical sections slowing things down. We want to keep the Rally class as close to real as possible and will check it out with two friends on kitted Rally bikes. We do have the option of allowing a refuel at the last refuel - will keep in mind.

Hi  not sure what you are asking but are there enough rally quads ? At this point one combined quad class however we could look at something if enough interest. Mostly off-road quads ?

As most will know, I am a rabid Tankwa DS rider, and have been up there many a time, always scoping out the vast landscape with longing, seeing awesome riding spots in a window shopping way... a bit like walking past a bike shop with an empty wallet   :'(

Check out the Dropbox link Clive shared in the post above (hint: if you have trouble downloading it, create a free dropbox account of your own, and under options, instead of downloading it, choose "Copy to my Dropbox" - it is instand - and you then download from your personal dropbox.)

If there is one ride you should do this year, whether you are a racer, or just a proficient plastic rider, this is it, the one, the must do.

My only comment, and you can ignore if you are a hard core racer, but this can be much more than a race, you need to bring yourself and your bike and do 500km of stunning riding over 2 days - to look after yourself and your bike and finish, you will also do well in the race standings.

Consider yourselves informed, ignore at your own cost,  you will be sorry.

I am old fashioned and do no  like to log on and register to things if not ABSOLUTELY necessary.

You can bypass the Dropbox story and download directly like so:
On [Download] button  Click on down arrow.  then [Direct Download]  If download does not start and a new popup open click on blue link right at bottom of  popup.

On mine the document sometimes sommer download directly in the browser. ??

I can't make it to this event and I am SHATTERED! I am also not a racer, but rather a dual sport rider - in fact, a bit of a pathetic one at it . . . I only get to do 2 - 3 weekend trips a year.

Nonetheless, I can vouch for this event!! The preparation by the organisers is PHENOMENAL - I was privileged to catch a glimpse of it (and of the route) while helping out for a weekend (a month ago) and it is pretty amazing.

If you are a half decent rider with a rally bike or lighter (I wouldn't make it on my F650GS Dakar) go for it! [if you can still get an entry]  :thumleft:

Was out there the weekend, coming back afterwards, I decided  I will stage a "come back"  (If Mayweather can, so can I)

I will get fit and start racing again for this, next year I will be on that starting line...it is that awesome, and bucket list worthy   :thumleft:

Just an update on the above:

The race is open to club members, with an MSA club member LICENSE.

As this race is not a regular off road race, attracting the attention of  more than the usual riff raff that hangs out WCOC, and if you are not riff raff, you need to:

1.   Be member of a club, you can join WCOC by completing the application form:  http://www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za/downloads.html (http://www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za/downloads.html).
You will notice that there is a joining fee...  this will be waived by WCOC

2.   On joining the club, you will be provided a letter of membership, which you take to https://www.msaonline.co.za/ (https://www.msaonline.co.za/), register, and apply for a MSA    licsense, small fee involved.

3.  Once sorted as a licensed lunatic, with MSA Licsense in hand, you can then enter the race - it is manual entry.
Go to http://www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za/events.html (http://www.westerncapeoffroad.co.za/events.html), find the "Tankwa Entry Form", complete and mail to e-mail provided.

Guys..this race is shaping to become an iconic event - be one of the original field of competitors - the finishers medals are cast jobbies and really collectible.

TANKWA X 500 RALLY

22 - 24 SEPTEMBER 2017

SPYSKAART

Now I'm hungry for more or less all of it.
Worth mentioning, the people organizing the catering is also responsible for the Calvinia vleisfees.  :drif:

I will not even bother schlepping a cooler box out there (it might melt) and then still making myself something to eat.

Besides, they offer us a unique opportunity to race in an area that we will not even be able to access under normal circumstances...
I suggest we support their initiative, and the fact that it is for a good cause will make you sleep better that night (that is Clive's course doesn't tire you out)

Awesome that means I can pack super light. I might have missed it, but will there be a bar too? :peepwall:

Maybe next year I'll have enough time to prep then the BRP can take part in the race

It was another absolutely brilliant event hosted by the WCOC. Due some health issues and a minor operation 2 weeks prior to the event, I was unable to race this year but after looking forward to this event all year there was no way I was going to miss at least being there and enjoying the race vibe and outstanding catering by the locals.

It’s difficult to try explain to someone what they’re missing out on by not doing this event. It’s like finding the best sweet you’ve ever eaten and suggesting to your friend to take a bite but they don’t want to because they’re too full from having lunch but you know that if they do, they’ll be so blown away, they’ll eat that sweet rather than their lunch every day of their life  ;D Yes, it is that good !!! :drif:

Even while sweeping the course on Saturday I found myself smiling in my helmet constantly. The fast, sweeping terrain keeps you so engaged on the bike that you just can’t help yourself from acting like a hooligan. It’s offroad biking nirvana

But it’s not just the riding and the terrain that is so amazing, it’s the organisers and the locals and the effort they go to, to make this event so special that stands out. The catering alone is worth the drive out there. All I took with for 3 days away was my coffee pot , a box of rusks and R800 in my wallet and I ate and drank like a King.
The Kerrie Hoender Roosterbrood was particularly good this year  :drif:

Well done to Clive, the WCOC team and the farmers Connie & Braam and their families for another superb Tankwa 500X.

God willing I’ll be back on the start line in 2018, on a 450 big banger  >:D

I anyone want to ever experience a proper off road race, this is the one, off all my years racing, this is by far my favorite event  👌🏻 👌🏻”

Willem Du Toit
“Thanks to you and your team, it was brilliant!”

Johan De Villiers
“Tankwa 500 XC. Tough race with excellent logistics and great support from the local farming community. Thank you to WesternCape OffRoad for an unforgettable eve...nt .

Riki Mans
“Awesome weekend at Tankwa 500. Fantastic run on Friday morning. Afternoon.. big crash , bended gearleaver and got it stuck in second. Hubby an JP Le Roux got it fixed 👍🏻Sat started great.. untill my engin decided to give in on a long straight , ending my race in a big cloud of dust... Although i could not finish, I loved this event and had a great week end. See you next year... Tankwa 😃  ... great effort . Thanx ”

Shane Nell
"Thanx  everyone involved this week end. Was a great race and great atmosphere as normal. Well done to all the winners and everyone else who completed."

Johan van Lill
"Clive en jou span baie dankie vir die amazing tankwa event dat was verseker die lekerste terein ooit die wat nie daar was nie het baie gemis sien jou verseker volgende haar weer"

From us at WCOC
This past weekend the WesternCape OffRoad Club hosted the 2nd Tankwa 500 X Country Event and from the positive feedback received it was again a HUGE success.

An event like this could not be possible without the local farmers who provide us with amazing vast lands to compete on. Cornie Taljaard and your fellow farmers - thank you - it certainly is a privilege to race in such a beautiful part of the country.

The catering and hospitality was exceptional, thank you to all the ladies who worked throughout the weekend providing great food.

To all the competitors who entered - well done. It was fantastic seeing the sportsmanship between you all and the club thanks you for supporting the event and the local community.

Then to everyone who has lent a hand over the year leading up to the event with building of facilities, logo design, filming, track setting, clean up etc - thank you. It certainly is great having extra hands helping out. (I am not tagging anyone as I would hate to forget someone - you all know who you are).

Till next year - 2018 Tankwa 500 X Country

Martin Lourens flying on the last day. Despite losing a ton of time with a short on his bike blowing fuses, he still managed a win in the Rally Class on his Droomers Yamaha WR450F.

He owed Fuzzy Muzzy a few beers at prize giving because after trying his best to solve the fuse blowing issue and stripping off his entire rally tower and tank, Muzz pitched up while sweeping and asked "Is the rear flicker wire is supposed to be hanging loose like that?" Turns out it was shorting against the frame  :imaposer:

What Clive said:

...  we are thinking about including adventure bikes next year ...

I'll start a thread under "planning a ride" early next year to assist you getting ready.

This is a bucket list event if you are a fit, 500/650/690/701 rider with a sense of adventure - it is completely do-able, I'm 52 yo (then 53) on a 650, and there was not a section I couldn't do.

What you can expect:

Lots of daily km's in awesome terrain that is considered DS heaven by a lot of riders, bonus: terrain you would normally only dream about riding
You can even bring the wife - they can go for a jaunt in a 4x4 -  lots of interesting spectating to be had, allowing them to share your passion and also experience the Tankwa.
Great camping, awesome vibe and "gees".

You can come, be part of what is shaping to be an iconic race, and have the opportunity to do the whole race course.
Even if you come for the adventure and the pure thrill of riding the terrain, to finish the ride, you will unintentionally do well in the race.

Get your bike and gear sorted, get fit, and make a plan, you will not be disappointed, guaranteed!!

David Ellis did well to walk away from those two spills, he was sore but continued throughout that weekend. There was a point that weekend I thought we should have taken medics with as Kevin wrote of his quad (at 130km +) also riding for the camera he was very lucky to survive it after completely destroying his YFZ450..... will post the footage once Michael has a chance to edit.

I really hope you include the Adventure bike segment.....I am sure at least 1 fat oke from Nam will join the fun  :peepwall:

From what I heard, this "1 fat oke" is sandbagging  :peepwall:

Rickus, I believe that a certain HPN rider is also interested. Now all we need is a S10 and a AT.

ps: Sandbagging Definition:  To conceal or misrepresent one's true position, potential, or intent especially in order to take advantage.

:laughing4: :laughing4: certainly NOT the case....I see these races as an opportunity to do an extreme Adventure ride.....with the Desert300 in Oranjemund  we got to ride those big slipface dunes in the Spergebied....AMAZING!!!!!
