Title: KTM 690 love and attention - Done
Post by: Kobus Myburgh on August 20, 2017, 06:43:46 am
Time has come to give the 690 some much needed attention.

I however have lots of questions that I'm hoping you guys can help with.

First up is the broken bolt holding the tank and crash bars in position.  Where would I find that specific washer and bolt.  It has Rockfox crash bars and the Oryx RS fairing.

Fuel line is leaking, I think the petcock needs an overhaul while I'm replacing the fuel line since it's not sealing properly.

Exhaust needs proper clean back to front.

Front mudguard catching front tyre.  I know these 690's don't have the best suspension, but this should not be happening.

Either the front guard bent on the first time it caught the tyre or it's something else?

This spacing also doesn't make sense to me.

And then it's chains and sprockets that needs replacement.

I'm sure there's some other things that will come out the wash as I strip.

Washers just incorrectly installed.  With the mudguard mounted flush all the angles corrects itself.  Also noticed with this arrangement the rear was catching the radiator guard.

This sweating can only be fuel related.  If you were wondering, this is the reason why I don't clean the bike prior to stripping.

I'll be trimming back the radiator guard to alleviate this chafing.

The pillion pegs are extremely hardegat to come down.  Is this normal?

Not sure how much mud flip the motard fender will catch but it's stiffer so wind and bounce should not be a issue .

Worth a look

Thanks armpump, will have a look how everything fits together once I assemble the fairing and front mudguard again.  Someone also mentioned the SE mudguard as an option.

With this type adapter

You can put new look fender on that has more support i think

That doesn't look like a home-made adapter, where can I find one?

Crash bars off to get to that broken bolt.

The 'sweating' was only caused by a loose bolt that caused the washer not to seal properly.

The reason why I'll wash my own bike for the rest of my life as well.  The amount of loose bolts encountered thus far is astonishing.

Ok back to work after our Amageza/Baja mates came round for a lekker get together.

Exhaust off, ready for a good clean - I love a clean header pipe.

After that, changing sprockets and chain.  I bought this chain and side stand for the 640 off a WD member >2 years ago and the chain will finally be put to use.

Sprockets from a mate from Amageza spares stock.

Whoever puts a stud bolt here, right behind the header bend, should be fired.

Interesting that there's only a spacer on the one side. (Item 3). My guess is that it's to ensure an even fix?

Header back in position and a little bit cleaner than it was.

Enough for today.

Setting up for chain and sprocket change.

Sprockets were certainly well used.

And then found the chain too short.

Fortunately had a new chain, although meant for another bike.

Ready for sale.

Just remember that case saver needs to have a guide installed with it. If you do not have one, I recall that it is the one used on a KTM65 chain guide.

geno.box, armpump gave you the right material link.  Available from most hardware stores, Midas etc.  There's one that is especially flexible, almost rubbery that I find work better than the general canopy seal strips.

The thread is however a bit outdated guys.  The bike was sold shortly after the last post here.  If there was a guide on the sprocket guard it would've gone back, if not, it probably still looks like in the photo.  No incident to date after many miles with the new owner.  He's got the link to this thread so will let him know.

Rivets was SS if memory serves correct Katana.  :thumleft:

Hi Kobus, I know this is an old thread but I have got a question regarding the fairing an tank which you had on your bike. Is it the Oem KTM rally fairing and nav tower? What tank did you used and were the more fairing parts or only fairing and tank? Cheers Lars

Hi Lars, thatís the Oryx RS kit on the bike.  It comes with the tank and mounting tower.  I bought the bike with it already fitted, but the complete kit was about R55k new I think.  Dwerg on the forum will know more about it than I do.

Iím not sure what your consideration is but a suspension upgrade is a must in my opinion if you go this route.  The 690 is a much nicer bike in OEM form than with a rally kit.
