Post by: Trippple XC on August 26, 2017, 05:33:56 am
So last friday i took delivery of my 300 XC.
Graham at Madmacs assisted me with the purchase of the shops demo model.
1250 km 2017 model.
Few mods done as follows by the shop.
Wider foot pegs
Crash bars
Mitas tyres front and rear.
Today i will be fitting a set of hand guards.
I will use this thread to keep updates and give feedback on this new generation Small capacity adventyre bikes.

Nice bike.  :thumleft:

I would love one for scooting to work and back. just did a price check and at 74k, I think I'll pass.

I still need to find the ultimate scoot for around town.

Tripple xc, congrats on your bike.
I really loved it as I am sure you can throw it around lekker.
For short traffic commutes and after testing it, the honda and Bmw, I believe it is the best of the lot in my opinion.
I am very interested in how you find it.
Tommy, Perry in Hillcrest have in stock and a demo.
We were going to ride it, but they could not find the key.
fixit, we also found the price a bit stiff.
My son does over 100 km a day commuting and at 100k went for the NC750 with the DCT box, very happy!
We trust that it will handle the high mileage better.

Fitted the handguards this morning ŗnd fitted an aftermarket set from Startline.
Standard handle bar ends turned out to be a mission to get off due to the red loctite used.
Going to get some bushes machined to finish it off properly .
Price wise i got a good deal from Madmacs and ended up paying just under 70k for the demo unit with aftermarket foot pegs,Crash Bars and Mitas tyres front and rear.
Looking at a decent skid plate and centre stand prices as i go along.
The Honda NC is a better commuter but i was looking for an adventure bike .
My bike is permanently dirty as the streets in our area in Darling are dirt and my first farm roads are 2 km away.
Busy getting my riding gear out and dusted off.
Next mission is to get all my tools ,tyre levers and puncture repair kits and tubes are up to spec and to start some rides.
First on my list is Cederberg Oasis 1 nighter back via Citrusdal and Kapteins Kloof  to Piketberg and via Mooreesberg and dirt back to Darling.

How does the Versys 300 compare to the KLR 650 in terms of power delivery? On paper they are about the same HP, but I would presume the thumper pulls better from lower revs or is that not the case?

Will have to let you know when doing proper dirt.

A very revy motor . If you just run it though the gears on tar and light dirt it puls freely to 6000 rpm.

It loves to be reved and i have let rip running each gear to 12000 rpm and it quickly pulls up to 160 km/ Hr.

On a steep hill and serious wind from the front you can feel it is a smaller capacity motor.

Loving it just have to get used to having to rev it continually.🖒

I have only heard good things about this bike. The revs would be something to get used to as I do not like revving the tits off something like in my younger days. However; go and have a look on the net and how people rave about the reliability of this machine. It is coming a long way in the Ninja 250, later 300 and also Z300 which was for some reason not selling good in SA. This is in my opinion very good value if you compare it to the 'competitions' in the market.

Need some feedback on this bike . Thinking of getting one to mess around in the dirt .

I have one, its not a dirt bike, its not really a proper dual sport either...it looks like a dual sport but its more tar orientated, like a GS is.

But its a damn fine scoot..... I have mine for around 5 weeks and done around 2500 km's on it...I bought it to commute on and its a laugh...its great to go back to simplicity.

Mine runs 160 on the clock at 12 000 rpm which is redline, although rev limiter is at around 13 000. it goes real well and cruises easily at 110-120 km/h range with enough power to speed up a bit.

fuel consumption is between 23 to 30 km/l depending on right hand. I am seriously enjoying this little scooter.

these things are a hoot and the motor is reliable even if you have to rev it a bit, have found the power is perfectly acceptable even at lower revs but to get it high speeds its reving at +- 13km per 1000 rpm in 6th.

I also have one.
It has about 18000km on the ODO at the moment.
Use it 80% commuting, the rest dirt roads.

Have a look at this video, it is a stock standard versys on the old postal route.
https://youtu.be/bmXG1h1uUeE (https://youtu.be/bmXG1h1uUeE)

As per the other owners, this bike is a hoot to ride.
Lightweight, with ample wind protection.
Light on juice if you ride at a relaxed pace.
Very simple in that there is very little electronics etc.

Picture of mine below, few mods done, with the best one being the 15 tooth front sprocket.
Going on a week long trip to Richtersveld next week with it.

Excellent bikes. Go to the Kawa dealer in Fourways, near Monte Casino. They should let you take one for a test ride.

It was a close toss up between this bike and the Rally for me, and I sometimes wonder if I should not have gone for the 300.

Got the bashplate from Dual Sport Designs in Wellington.
It is made from 6mm allu with all other mounting hardware in stainless steel.
I had another bashplate before this, but that one failed and almost had me go down in traffic.
It does have a fairly high price, but after seeing the other  options out there I bit the bullet and am very happy so far.

I believe one of the biggest mistakes the bike shops make is to give customers these demo bikes without the motor being run in properly, in other words still fresh and stiff.
My first test ride was quite underwhelming, but if you get to ride one that has been loosened up it is a completely different experience.

I had the same dilemma.... toss up between the CRF250L/Rally and the Versys 300.

I went Versys as I do some motorway riding and the higher topend is appreciated.

However, if Honda would just put that 286cc motor into the rally I would of gone the other way.

They both excellent bikes and have a totally different bias but both are excellent.

Thanks for the info.

I have other questions as well, as I would rather hear opinion of an owner with miles in the seat more than some internet reviewer...

Do you have the ABS or NON-ABS variant? Is the ABS a pain in the backside on gravel?

Do you have the ABS or NON-ABS variant? Is the ABS a pain in the backside on gravel?

I have the ABS model, as I find it to be useful in traffic.
I have however fitted an override switch which enables me to disable the ABS while riding.
I found that 95% of the time the ABS would not be much of a problem on gravel, but I had a close call in the Cederberg in a turn on a recently graded dirt road with a negative camber when I had to reduce speed quickly, so fitted the switch thereafter.

How did you wire the switch?

I inserted a switch in one of the front ABS sensor wires, which essentially breaks the connection between the ABS pump/controller and the front wheel sensor.
To enable the ABS again I just flip the switch and have to cycle the ignition.

Clever and simple!  :thumleft:

I also have one.
It has about 18000km on the ODO at the moment.
Use it 80% commuting, the rest dirt roads.

Have a look at this video, it is a stock standard versys on the old postal route.

Have to ask though, that little lip on top of the screen, is it effective?

I get a lot of wind noise n the cockpit, even with ear plugs and I use an AGV full face (K5) . Was wondering of that lil lip thingy would make a difference.

Thanks

It is not 100% effective, but for me it helps a lot.
I am 1,81m tall to give you an idea.
I looked around at bigger/higher screens, and at that time only found one or two, and they were not compatible with the barkbuster handguards.
It does put some weight on top of the screen because the bracket is stainless, so there is some flex on the screen in a headwind.
You do however get used to it.

Something like the aerotrim which is nice and lightweight might work even better.

And at north of R2k for any screen option it made for a reasonable return on investment.

Thanks , I am 1.9 metres ad this is the cause of my issue I suspect. My mate rode my bike and had no issues but he is 1.72 or thereabouts.

I will investigate this lil lip option. I have bought industrial strength motorcycle earplugs which should be delivered today, might solve the immediate problem.
