My initial observations

Skaars daar dan drink julle al.

Iemand moet vir Hinksding laat buk dat sy hare saam met sy skape geskeer word. Hy lyk soos 'n apostel

Wat het jy nou teen die ou?  Wil jy nou 'n Simson op hom trek sodat hy verloor?   :imaposer:

My ook nog altyd stom geslaan hoe belangrik iemand se hare of looks vir n ander kan beteken, veral mans oor mans.  Ek meen, is daar n aantreklikheids faktor? :eek7:

(Neem aan hierdie was tongue in cheek comment, komend van Jan.)

So, the whole competitive side starts tomorrow evening. It's a moersa thing to organize and get all the players together. Tomorrow morning we go and do the media thing at Pupkewitz Honda Namibia. More importantly we pick up the whimsy new bikes.

Then after that's finished, mount up, fill up and sail off Spitzkoppe. Getting 24 bikes and all Hardy's flipping impressive toys there should take most of the day.

Then.... we find out who is the Other.

We will know the points standings till the last 4 days when it will be revealed who is the Honda Quest Adventurer Team.

It's a bit depressing. I'm going to feel a bit guilty taking the title and the bike from a bunch of really nice fellow competitors.

Thanks Andrew - keep us updated whenever possible?  We will be checking probably far too often.

Few questions:

1.) Manual vs DCT bike allocation. Do you get to choose a bike - set it up for yourself for the period or do you swop between Manual and DCT in your team?
2.) Team allocations. Please share?

Good luck to everyone and enjoy the journey and enjoy Namibia.

We will only learn of our team mates this afternoon.

Each team will get one of each model. We will be required to swap 4 times per day. It is a requirement of the competition to do this as well as to give feedback on the experience too

Hit our diarist fesh-fesh. Some are clearly a little more comforatable than others in the thicker sand.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170905/1f87963caf99df5a78f736c2bb9aa0ef.jpg)

:peepwall:
Seker verstaanbaar ...  :-\

So this evening I found out who is going to be teaming up with me - Phillip Groenewald from George. Our paths have crossed once when I came across him and friends by the side of the road out of fuel, but other than that we're strangers. It's the same for everyone else though.

They say they picked the teams randomly, I don't believe a word of it. It's too even.

None of us know what we are going to have to do over the next 10 days.... jeez, 10 days!?  I'm pretty sure we will get to see the best and worst sides of ourselves at some stage. Hopefully more of the former than the latter.

Think of this a bit like survivor, just that no-one gets voted off, we score points for whatever we are going to have to do. Nevertheless, I have no doubt it's going to be tough. However, one instant way to be booted off, is to break the bike through mishandling.

I'm still being plagued by the squirts, (before I left I ate some dodgy chicken) it's a concern as we have no showers and rudimentary toilets. I think this bout is from the tap water in Windhoek. Hopefully I get to someplace soon for a good scrub. Till then, it's Imodium and fastidious hands.

We head next to Opuwo. And after that, Epupa.

Tomorrow I get to taste the DCT version. The bikes finally have been personalized. It looks brilliant.

Once I have better reception, there will be some great pics and videos.

Right, bed time. Thanks for all the well wishes. It's great to share this great adventure.

If you go to the quest adventure website it will have all the other pairs in there. Also, they will be posting a video of the day. I am the only one with the dayglo yellow helmet.

I wonder how G's speech went. Shame, not much of a public speaker or rather a nervous public speaker, he was worried about this the most.

The boys and girl seem to be sleeping in... no movement yet from Spitzkoppe.

No daily YouTube video or paired partners list yet up on the site, so I will patiently wait.

I must just add how incredibly proud I am of not just THROTTLE, but of each and everyone that has made it this far. Just being selected is a privilege in itself. Winning the bike and whatever comes with that is a massive bonus, but even if nothing is won, hopefully a mountain of memories has been gained. GO TEAM HONDA QUEST!!!!

Can't view photos Craig, something about permissions unless the problem is at my end.

Then again I am at work and supposed to work as opposed to following this. Also don't see anything on Quest website re teams, not that it really matters much, just out of interest.

Guess I'll have to catch up at home tonight.

Reluctantly nope. I tried to "quote" your original post and select the {img} URL. It gives me a permissions error presumably why it won't show on the forum.
I'm also battling to share Google pictures/photo album whatever it is called as photobucket is useless nowadays.

No sweating it I'm sure we're in for a lot more.

If you haven't tried it appears one can also download the track from the live map on quest trueadventure website once they're done for the day.

Here's how:
1. Click on the green marker depicting current position
2. This opens a tab towards the top left of the map titled "View track"
3. "View track" select a date and it gives you options to export to KML, GPX or SHP with a two other options to "Action replay" and "View tracks"

Got a quick phone call in and they regrouping in Uis. Also a refuel I imagine.

THROTTLE says everyone slept in tents, except for the adventurous few... says it was unusually cold last night and overcast. Had to sleep with a few layers on. Serves him right for not sleeping in a tent.

Heading for Palmwag for the night.

I am tracking their route carefully on Basecamp and will post the gps track here after the event.

Any idea the challenges they have to complete? Least I undertook that they'll be "evaluated" doing stuff meaning a forced obstacle or something I guess.
I was thinking organisers may do stuff to bikes overnight but that could be very dangerous especially if isn't the obvious type stuff.

Scrat, Kamanya and Angus Welch are also Quarriors, though they may not all know it. We have a disproportionate interest in the Quest, and a disappointment from the outset as they can't all win. But to take part must be prize enough.

I would have hit a left turn at Brandberg White Lady lodge Ugab River crossing and headed to Brandberg West and then up north - but then that is just me. There must be reason to this madness!
Waiting - anticipating cool pics, epic stories and vids to follow from my favorite place on Earth. Need to get back there soon and ride my oldtimer XRV Africa Twin to re-connect. True Adventure!
Wishing all lucky participants an awesome and safe rest of trip.

It is gnarly! Friends have been down part of it a few weeks ago and had to turn around due to time. Lots of sand. Especially the thick grainy type with some dunes blowing in... We rode further west and got the same result. On the way to the valley of desolation 4x4 trail.

As I have it they have a few tasks ahead of them.

Each one was given a specific topic about Namibia and they have to do a 15 minute speech on it. THROTTLE got Fish River Canyon. Not sure about the other guys.

They have another topic for a shorter chat as well. They have to talk about something close to their hearts, like a charity for instance.

Not sure what else will will be asked from them.

Plenty sand, doable but have time and fluids available.

So live tracking is done by a company called https://www.africanstuff.co.za/

It doesn't break the bank either
What does it cost:
Long term rental (more than 5 days) costs R500 per month including batteries for first month
Short term rental (1 to 5 days) R100 per day including batteries Deposit R2000. 4 x AAA Ultimate lithium batteries per month @ R150 per set

Sarel (Africanstuff) went on to say the unit (GPS) will send coordinates every 5 minutes while in motion however, there may be 30 minute gaps depending on the low orbiting satellites. Says the batter will last 1-2 months using it every day. The Spot Gen3 can also work however, I don't own one so can't comment.

I used one of the African Stuff trackers on my recent trip to Koes to give Swambo some peace of mind. It worked absolutely faultless with no issues. I will definitely use one for my next solo trip. This is a great product at a very affordable price. :thumleft: :thumleft:

Does not need the Leatt neck brace with that pre-filter  :imaposer: I believe was in the mid 40's today - he should wet that thing so it acts as a radiator.  :peepwall:

So this morning I got woken up at about 4am by the sounds of a hyena.   Yes we were all sleeping outside. And that kept me awake for a while.

The route today from Palmwag to Opuwo was spectacular.   Indeed it was a bit shorter (260 odd kms ) but still a beautifull piece of road.

I myself suffered 2 punctures on my front wheel.

Tonight we are camping in Opuwo and I believe tomorrow we will head to Epupa.
This will put us out of signal for the next couple of days, so we will send photos again when we are back in reception area.

That photo is to do with something Phillip and I decided to share with the group. I work with people for a living. Some of the technology I use I put to good use between Phillip and I to speed up the understanding of each other as well as how better to work together. Critically, how to disagree efficiently and get to solution quicker. Now tactically this is, on the face of it, not very bright as it seems remove an advantage out team would have. But, this is a flipping long event and it is impossible to finish well without the help of others. There are multiple times a day where small and large favours are required to be given, sometimes at great cost, to get through. An example was our first puncture, Barbara and Charl stopped and without their help, we would have been there in the hot sun and dust a LOT longer. So, I gave a quite 10 minute intro and "how to". it's been fun to spend just a little time with each team subsequently to go into dynamics and some solutions to their unique combination. I am certain it was the right thing to do.

[Today I saw 50 degrees at 3pm. Most of us have easily had more than 8 liters of water. Me, I'm probably going to bed after about 11. No one has fallen but a few have a good few aches and pains. Tomorrow is promised to be really tough and the weather is supposed to be even warmer??

2 private groups have been on the route ahead of us by just a few days. One on similar sized bikes, the other on far smaller. The first group had a torrid day, the second one had to fly out a guy who broke his leg. It's going to be similar temperatures to today so, I think it might be a day that's a bit tough for some. I'm looking forward to it as I tend to do well in the hotter tougher days, also, it's a stretch I've long wanted to do.

Phillip and I have an good rhythm and are riding really well together.  We've figured out what works between us. The way they want us to ride is in our pairs, side by side. It takes a lot of trust and a really good system to stay safe. Coupled with that, they also insist that we constantly monitor the pair behind as well as keep max 2 minutes behind the guys in front. If the guys behind dissapear we are expected to notice and turn around and make it back to them within 10 minutes. It's a tall order.

We each were given the option of a vitamin B12 for energy and to help with  conditions. Clearly doping on this competition is allowed!?!

My best side

Sadly, for the next 2 days, there is zero connectivity. I was surprised that there was any here. We have to be ready by 6 this morning and it is expected that if all goes well, we might make camp this evening. If there are issues, and with 22 bikes, I'd be surprised if there isn't, it will be a much longer day. Water will be an issue as the bikes in this section are going to far outpace the support vehicles.

Thanks for all the support.  It's much appreciated.

On food: I was following a less carbs type lifestyle, but here all that's out the window. It's been crazy to see the volumes I'm shoveling in. It's eating for sustenance, not appreciation.

I hear my interview was on the portion this evening. I was doing something when the camera crew showed many of the guys the edit. Phillip says, as he's not good at impromptue talks he thought he spoke a load of rubbish. As we'd discussed what we thought of each other, my answer wasn't a surprise. The editor, as always cut out a bunch of stuff. The shot of bikesgoing through that small crossing was us. (Normally one would ride around things like that, but when you see a camera crew, well, you gotta make it look good!)??

Right back to sleep. There was little reception earlier so when I woke up now for more water, I thought I'd do this update.

No, bike not even warm yet. Will show white blocks on top of temp lines to signify coolant temp.Normally 3 blocks or halfway, not sure what they're getting in those conditions.

Yes, of Minxy pinching washers at that very moment  :lol8:

I know it's one of her less favourite riding terrain, the steep descent with a big bike.  Luckily she has a huge bunch of team mates willing to assist but i've found that sometimes too many helping hands can freak the rider out even more.

The last 3 days have been epic!

We camped just before Van Zyls pass 2 days ago. Although vZ's has the more fearsome reputation, the road to it is brutal. There was a huge technical decent just before an atrocious climb. Only 2 of us cleaned it without help.  Me being one of them. More by fluke than skill. At one point, because I was helping guys who were struggling, I overheated and had to strip off to cool down. That evening I was toast and had to sleep before supper, get woken to eat and then back to sleep. It was a long brutal day. Phillip had a great day and was styling.

Yesterday was van Zyls proper. It was very tough but believe it or not, all 22 bikes got through with no damage at all in relatively quick order. A huge testament to the teamwork and competence of the guys. This is a record as no group this big has ever done this before.

Just after the critical "step" was even scarier with massive drop off on a loose off camber hill. Again no issues.

After the pass, was a very testing section of about 10k's of deep sand. Phillip who has the sum total of 2 rides in sand picked it up amazingly quickly. The last section for the day was another technical climb that, much to the organizers surprise, everyone cleaned so that we made it home before dark. It was a REALLY excellent day.

Today was the best yet! We rode 70k's down a dry river bed. It's a very tough thing to do. Huge sand skills needed. Phillip took a little while to get into the groove but by the end of the day, was keeping up with the leader easily.

Tons of stories and lots to tell.

To the ones that have loved ones riding, no one has been hurt, all are in great spirits and having the ride of a lifetime.

Hopefully, I'll get better reception soon so that I can start sending pics and video.

Rikkus, maybe you need an Africa Twin? We had a great time and easily made it through.... with a tone of sweat

They use a red ochre and fat on their skin. It is a beauty thing but has many other properties; keeps the mozzies away, moisterises. Funny thought; it stains everything badly, so if any of the boys here "got involved" it would be tough to hide

I'm sure we are going to see lots in the weeks and months to come!
Honda has raised the bar in "Adventure bike" marketing substantially!!!

Nobody can say again that the name "Africa Twin" on the side of the bikes is just there for show ....
On top of that they are giving more than 20 people an adventure of a lifetime - for free, while also adding some "hero" status to them ...

Absolutely agree that this adventure is the type of event to really showcase the bike's abilities and I think a lot will come of it!!  Hardy and the boys really know their stuff.

I for one think that the AT is an absolute fantastic but underrated bike for adventure riding.  It doesn't have all the power (95hp) but then again, it has the same power as the old 950 Adventure/ Super Enduro.  Nobody would call them under powered and I think for true adventure riding like this you don't need more power.  This is a brilliant in-between dual sport which fills the gap between the hardcore singles and the more road biased 1200 & 1290's (incl 1090 & 1190).

I rode the DCT model the other day and was at first very hesitant as I was constantly looking for the clutch and gearshift.  Could also not figure out how the automatic transmission will react if you want to become more racy.  That was until I started pulling it's ear - all I can say is, that is one incredible bike.  There are a number of irritations like the small footpegs, the stepped seat (which I don't like on an offroad bike) and some smaller niggles but none that you cannot sort out with aftermarket items. If I had to buy one I will definitely invest a bit in the suspension even though I found it much better than the big stock dualies.  For the BMW guys who listened to the ouvrou stories that you cannot pillion on it, go try it out.  It hasn't got 150/160 HP but then again, it was designed to be an adventure bike.

I personally think this bike is years ahead of it's big adventure competitors with that DCT.  If Tau and Kamanya really rate this bike, who the hell am I to disagree after all  :ricky:

I must say Throttle waxed lyrical about the DCT.

Ja ja, but i'll just leave it at pulling  :imaposer:

According to Andrew Minxy suffered from some arm pump in the one riverbed yesterday  (after doing some 70km of it).  I reckon she must have ridden the  standard model as the DCT allows you to just twist the ear - but then again, I'm just sitting on my ass doing some keyboard riding :lol8:

At least I get to keep the monetary side of the household doing while she's doing the manly thing, fighting a bike through elephant and lion infested Dakar terrain.

I have only ridden the sons NC750 with the DCT box, what a pleasure and we did a bit off gravel around Burne valley and towards Loteni and it handled it really well.
It is very easy to handle in slow riding as it always has torque and pulls from very slow without having to use clutch!

We were on cooking duty. So it's a late evening. Beef curry. Also responsible for breakfast. Long day!

There was a panel interview with some tough questions; who is your front runnning teams? Who would you not like to ride with? What have you two disagreed about? Etc. Then another interview for the cameras.

Then this afternoon we had to get just into our boots and helemts and a cup and meet just in front of the camp near the river bed with our bikes. We were never t looking forward to the surprise. Speculation was everything from having to push bikes through the sand to a hike in that gear. But, we then followed Hardy up onto the plains above Purros and were spread out with about 500m between each person for an hour of solitude!!!!! What an absolute pleasure!

There's amazing journeys to be had
To a magical desert land

And just like that it came to pass
That I'm sitting with my thoughts
Witnessed by ancient sun burnt sands
The journey this Quest has brought

I've been right back to where it began
And far further still than before
With a band of laughing, helping freinds
We've claimed Van Zyls and more

But, much as the sights passed behind
There's been the inner journey too
What I am? where I am?
The big why's and the me with you?

The sun is setting to the biting wind now
And for the moment it's just me and the land I'm in
A pause with my back against the wheel
But lead me on, please more, my African Twin.

How does the process of deciding the winning team work? On what criteria are the teams getting observed?

And how many judges are there?

I have not seen much of the teams and we have no criteria to compare, but from the start I had a good feeling about Gryph and Kamanya.

It is sad there can always only be one winner. This seems to be one huge team effort with all twenty pulling. They should all win and keep their bikes, or the non-winners (can't call them loosers) should get to buy their's at ridiculous discount.

Yep those buggers took it. Deserved too!

I'm very sad to have to hand back the bike, I rather liked the stickers.

In the end it was a close finish with 5 teams neck and neck. Aparently it was only by half points in th end.

You will get your chances next year, just brush up on your sand riding and dish washing!

Now for the flood of stories and photos from all. I'm guessing others will be along soon to start their own ride reports.

It will take some very special riding and people to better what we have experienced in the last two weeks.

Northern Namibia is hard but spectacular. The days was long and hot. The beauty of the place I cannot describe but most special to me is the friends I have made.

Despite this being a competition there is a very special bond between the 20 competitors. This morning I woke up and I miss them all. I miss making coffee, packing, getting on the bike and heading off into the unknown, and eating dust all day.

There is enough photos between the 20 of us to keep the forum alive for a long time. I'll start posting and writing later.

This was life changing for me and definitely made me a better person (in my eyes at least). I learned more in 2 weeks than in my previous 15 years of riding.

If anyone had any doubt regarding the capabilities of these big bikes it should not exist anymore. 20 bikes, 2600km and not one single mechanical issue.
Hate to admit is but Dan was right about Japanese reliability. Other manufacturers have some serious things to ponder and work on.

To my teammate - Minxy you are an absolute rockstar. I have said it before and will say it again. In time it will be forgotten that I was your teammate at Quest, but history will not forget you - you are destined for bigger things. Keep working hard as you do and keep living the dream.

To be continued

Nice one Charl  :thumleft: Congrats to the winners, this event looked nothing short of EPIC.
I'm however seriously glad it's over, I suffered from FOMO daily reading this thread, it looked truly amazing and I'd have loved to have been part of it. Maybe next year  8)

I doubt whether you'll find any feedback in the world more qualified than the 20 finalists.

These bikes have been through the toughest terrain possible and as a group we have had more than enough time to ride and discuss both.

The answer is unanimous- DCT. I believe it is the future.

Hi KK, well done to you all! It must have been a bufketlist event! Are you guys back at home yet?

One question: is it possible for one oke/girl to pick the AT up?

Hi Frans

Yes we came back yesterday. All safe as far as I know.

Yes it is. We picked up many a bike. I would however suggest that you make your riding buddies pick up the bike. It is less tiring and saves much needed energy.

One girl - yes. But then again she was no ordinary girl.

Without telling the whole story I'll make some pictures do the talking and add some comments

First briefing. Kamanya pretending to listen to instructor Tau.

Tau is not only a very talented bike rider but also a super nice guy.

Filling 22 bikes daily very quickly became part of our routine

The previous night we got introduced to our teammates.

The organizers made it clear that they simply could not do a simple draw for the teams as this could lead to 2 strong riders ending up in a team which would be unfair.

Later in the trip it became quite apparent that they must have me in mind as Minxy is a super strong rider. Most people have no idea how good she is on a bike. More on that later.

This officer introduced himself, asked if he could sit on the bike and have a picture taken with us and my beard

We came across the grave of the love child of Nismark and I - Bullu.

I named my bike after him. Bullu!

Some more flats. By the end of the trip we have lost count. These roads are unforgiving- better go well prepared.

Minxy brought a little crutch with. On the first day I asked her but why - she said I'll see and boy was she right. That thing got used more than the showers we had at our disposal.

Lovely pics! Thanks!

I'm interested in how the AT compares to the 950/90. Perhaps Kamanya can comment (or others who ride a KTM)?

My honest take on your question:

I ride a 2008 Adventure in standard trim apart from a higher seat.

I have ridden mine in rocky terrain and sand, but nothing compared to what was thrown at us during the last two weeks.

The AT is a MUCH smoother bike with plenty more low down torque.  You will have to ride the 990 at much higher revs to conquer the sand that was thrown at us.  The second gear on the AT is a tractor gear and you can both overcome the worst of the sandy river beds with it as well as climb the most challenging mountain.

Rear suspension I found quite similar, but the AT front suspension is better than the standard 990 Adv front.

The AT is simply better and more refined for me.  I'm hoping I can buy the one I used on the trip sooner rather than later.

Only problem is that I started and finished on the manual and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the DCT is the way to go.  Despite a request from the majority of the group to look into a software upgrade to allow the DCT to select second gear for starting up in the sand, this is merely a further improvement and not a necessity.

The majority of the adventure riding community will avoid the type of sand that Honda threw at us - until you realize how much easier it is with the AT - making ordinary people look extraordinary!

Wow. That's quite a statement. I have always been a KTM fan. Preferred the 950 to the 990, due to the jerky EFI on the 990.

If it's better than the KTM all round then Honda have done an amazing job. I think it's my next bike after I recover from wife screwing me for a lot of my ronts during divorce. Love the look too, especially the gold forks.

There's many more aspects in which the AT is better for me (i.e. Lower COG etc) but it will sound biased right now.

The KTM was probably the best dirt bike of all (when not in for repairs). I had 3 of them. You say the AT is better. I assume you are an accomplished rider. Quite a statement. Awesome.

I know we all had different experiences and opinions on many levels so in summary I'll give my feedback for what it is worth.

1. This was an absolutely life changing experience for me in all regards.
2. The friendships made was more valuable than winning a bike.
3. If I was given free range to pick a teammate I would have picked Minxy again. A positive and never say die attitude is exactly what is needed out there.

4. The organizers and Honda took a massive chance and made history. Not one single mechanical issue and a few other records made with this trip.

The bikes:

1. These bikes are more capable than any other big bike I have ever ridden. It handles like a small bike in thick sand and can scale mountains with proper suspension.
2. The DCT is the future. Unless you have spent a few days in the hardest of conditions with them you might doubt this statement.
3. The extra 10kg on the DCT is irrelevant and not felt at all.
4. If you ever attempt a trip like this there is one thing you would surely want at the top of your list - reliability. None is more reliable than the AT.
5. The bikes was standard except for 2 aftermarket additions. The Rumbux crashbars and GoGravel radiator guards was thoroughly tested and is a must have.
6. They are very comfortable for 10 hour days.
7. Fit a decent set of tyres like the Continental TKC' 80's

I really would like to tell you about the flaws of these bikse, but in 2 weeks and 2500km I could find none. There is simply nothing these machines could not overcome.

So if I had to buy one tomorrow what would it be? DCT without a doubt.

Now I feel like going for a ride.

I have the KTM 950 Adventure. The Africa Twin feels like a new and improved version of my KTM 950. I found the AT much easier to ride with weight distribution being better and like ktmkobus mentioned, the bike is super smooth. I can even pick it up myself, which I can't do with the 950. The DCT is revolutionary... I rode the DCT over Van Zyls Pass and through the sandy riverbeds, couldn't stop smiling the DCT made everything a breeze. I really, really did not want to give the bike back when we got to Windhoek :ricky:

Some days were also more difficult than others, but the riding and team spirit always superseded the hardship.

This is what it looks like at the end of the day when you start the ride with river crossings in the Purros canyon.

Tired and very eina feet.

Amazing experience you guys must have had - well done all from organizing to taking part ... I love my DCT took me through Southern Africa with not an issue at all - So good to see a whole lot of the new AT's being put through the African test , they are a fantastic bike - I ride solo and yes it can be picked up alone in the boondocks . Such beautiful images from your journey together looked like a great spirit from all from day one - that I am sure you all took away from the experience . Would love to know more of your take on the bike - I know mine - she's a keeper !

990 VS Honda AT 1000

Overall, in one sentence, the Honda is a very refined 990.

The Honda will be the easier bike to ride for everyone and almost every occasion, yet is no softy. The DCT is again easier in almost every respect to the manual.

2nd gear in slow technical is a beast. It just tractors along. The torque at low revs makes it very rideable in the slow stuff. When needed though, it doesn't mind being revved. The engine is so very smooth. It will pull with no trouble from idle, even in 4th.
Exceptional fuel consumption.
Tar riding it's smooth and comfortable (we only did about 200km on tar)
It is geared a little high in first for the very slowest stuff. But this is only on the manual. The DCT has the ability to inch forward on very little throttle.
The suspension needs a little firming but was not bad out the box. I fiddled with ours to suit both myself and Phillip. At first the bikes were hard and skippy in the rougher stuff. The read rode low but bucked too easily. I turned in a little compression on the front and less damping. Then some preload on the rear with less compression. The suspension is easily affected by tyre pressure – harder tyres are easily felt.
Exceptional wind deflection, mirrors and lights. Not seen or felt better.
Great seating, small pegs though.
Exceptional ABS. (the rear ABS is a little agricultural but that’s fine, it’s not the important one.)
On the DCT endless ability to fiddle with the mode options and then still be able to dial up or down a gear manually when needed. It is an exceptionally clever system. I liked it a lot. It seems to know exactly what mood you’re in and responds accordingly. For 98% of riding it is superior to the manual.
If you don't turn the ignition off, it stays in the mode selected. Using the kill switch only to stop the engine, once you turn it on again only the traction control needs to be turned off.

Some niggles;

DCT - In seriously deep sand, the inability to select 2nd gear to start with is a drawback. It takes huge revs in first to get going and then the bike in any mode won't go into 2nd without having to slack off a bit. Apparently, this is a software issue and will be rectified.

I found in extreme technical rocky bits that I preferred the clutch version. The DCT is extremely clever but that last bit of feeling that a clutch offers isn't there. Conversely, my partner Phillip, who was less comfortable in extreme stuff, categorically stated that he wouldn't have been able to finish the technical bits if he wasn't on the DCT. On one of the extreme days he started on the manual but after a few climbs where he was struggling, we swapped and he then enjoyed the rest of the day.

However, on 2 of the days where there was serious sand - one of 70km of deep riverbeds and the other 40km of soft dunes, he found the manual easier only because he could get onto the plane quicker because he had the option of being able to start in 2nd. I liked both in the sand but it did take a bit of skill to get the DCT going. Once going though, they both were rockets.

An irritation was on severe bumpy washboard or rocky bits, the good looking plastic black bits on the exhaust rattled. It sounded like there was a chain issue and it took me a while to work it out.

The bikes, even in the extreme heat and working hard never overheated.

The Honda looks sexy as fuck!

Lastly, the major difference for me was when really pushing along or being a bit of a hooligan. I diced Tau for a short distance in the dunes and though hugely quick, the bikes suspension isn’t up to reacting to being ridden like a maniac. It packs down and cannot handle enormous hits. The KTM is going to be better in the last 10% of ability. Also, though the KTM has the angrier stronger engine, the Honda is less so and makes it less intimidating. The KTM only likes life above 3500rpm whereas the Honda is very happy from idle. The KTM’s engine is addictive whereas the Hondas has a great bark but is more refined and polite. On the Honda, it takes marginally more patience to steer with the rear, whereas the KTM is instant and epic.

The KTM is far higher than the Honda and this is where less than competent riders who have shorter legs will really feel it. The AT has an adjustable seat, the KTM not.

With better suspension, Honda have a winner.

I am really impressed with the bike and am desperately sore to have lost the bike to Charl and Hennie.

I would really like to buy mine back!

Thanks for the direct comparison between the bikes. Its relevant to me as I own a 990S and often wondered how it would stack up against the new AT.The Honda is clearly a very competent bike in both guises.

Lastly, the major difference for me was when really pushing along or being a bit of a hooligan. I diced Tau for a short distance in the dunes and though hugely quick, the bikes suspension isn’t up to reacting to being ridden like a maniac.

Great feedback so far!

Could someone please post some pics/vids of the dunes you guys rode?

Any feedback on the 990 vs AT wrt power? the 990 has something like 20hp more, how did you guys experience that?

The KTM seems stronger torque wise and very snappy. The Honda's is misleading because it's so smooth. I've heard one person say that in a drag the Honda kept ahead of the KTM. This may be, but the KTM is more raw and feels stronger. It's almost like a thumper vs a triple. Or, the KTM has a lighter flywheel?

The KTM's power is instant, the AT's is more linear. It seems like the torque curve is steeper on the KTM.

The 990's more instant power would be more of a function of higher compression ratio?, lighter flywheel effect, and more aggressive ignition/fuel mapping.

Thanks for the bike comparison, Andrew, this is the sort of feedback that I like.

P.S. I just Googled, the specs between the 990 and CRF1000 tells a story, the 990 has 11.5:1 CR, the CRF 10:1.......the 990 has a bore of 101mm and a stroke of 62.4mm to give 999cc.
The CRF has a bore of 92mm and a stroke of 75,1mm to make up 998cc.

I could not agree more with what Charl said here..
there is no $$ value to the friendships made and experience gained from this EPIC event..
i will not trade a new AT for what i personally have gained in this 2 weeks!

the bikes were amazing.. we put them all trough hell and back.. for 10 days... no issues  :thumleft: :thumleft: will i go do this route again with a 245kg bike...? YES - only if it is the Africa Twin..
I was lucky one to have a DCT for the 2 days we were doing Van Zyls. I was blown away by the ease this piece of engineering handled all the obstacles.
I was driving at the back with Kamanya and it felt like cheating... no worries about the clutch and managing the right gear at the right time with the boot... it was all there with a touch of a finger .. AMAZING!!
I will deff take the DCT without a doubt ... Like Kamaya mentioned.. the only thing i would like to request ion the DCT (after trying to find something at fault with the DCT) is to have the Software upgraded to allow for 2nd gear pull away when in Gravel mode and the Manual transmission is selected... this ONLY for when in deep soft sand...
Other than that.... I could not find anything wrong with the bike..

my previous bike was a KTM 950 Adventure.. will i replace the KTM with a AT... Hell Yes!!
i did everything with my 950 , atlantis / amageza /long tours... i loved my bike!!
after this Kaokoland tour - i have to honestly say that i do not think i would have made it/enjoyed it as much if i was on the KTM.
the AT truly are ready for any obstacle out there!!

well - i am trying to catch up on work... NOT!!!
Just trying to get all the footage sorted - will upload some pics soon!

Agree, very good to hear these comparisons. Dan, I am no technical guru, but the parallel twins which I have ridden as opposed to v twins that I have ridden, almost always make less power and torque than the similar capacity V's.The parallel twins produce linear power and torque as said and most are smooth, whereas the V's tend to be rougher and vibey.Sure, most V's pick revs up quicker, without being big revvers in any way, but have a rather lowish plato. The aspects which you have raised will no doubt have an influence on the feel of the 990 engine.

Hi KarooKid,

See you guys did some maintenance on the go, why did you need to drain the oil in 2500km, seems a bit fast?

Also did you guys clean the air filters regularly and how difficult is it to get to, it is under the tank as in other Honda bikes and like on my Varadero a PITA to get to and not quick.

Thanks for nice RR and pic's!

Well done to all involved in this epic adventure, this I will need to re-read 3 times to get all the info packed into it.

PS: to keep the settings just throw the side stand out whilst at idle for a short quiet stop.

Yep it would be nice to also know the overall casualty list of the bikes (even if they seem to have taken everything)

That spectacular crash must have broken or bent something on the bike.

Were there cracked / bent rims - I heard that being mentioned on the videos

etc..

I am very very impressed with what these bikes and riders did. Wel done all round

The crew only got back late last night after a tough two days on the road etc.

I will try to add value to the detailed ride report that the WD contestants will compile later. I do however would like to thank all of them, the WD contestants, and the crew members, John Webb (Tau), Christoffel Lombard (Hingsding), en Jaco Kirsten (Jacko) for making this the special event it was.
Great riders, great adventurers and great friends, all of them.

The oil was changed because the bikes were brand new (mine had 55k's on when I rode it out of Windhoek) and were required for warranty reasons have a first service whilst on the trip. The air filters are a pain to get to.

Only 2 things broke on the 22 bikes;

A handguard in that massive crash - it was later remounted with just a bit of ducttape. The rest of the bike was unscathed.
A brake lever broke on Van Zyls from a tip over. It was a stumpy shorty after that but still useable. It was changed out that evening I think.

One minor ding in a fuel tank, also on Van Zyls
About a third of all the bikes had a slight ding in the decorative/heat shield for the exhaust - it's a replaceable cover.
Not one rim had a smiley or crack. This is hardly believable considering the amount of snake bite punctures and the terrain.

A huge factor in this very short list of damage was the Rumbux crash bars and bash plate. They are solidly mounted to the frame at many points, are flipping sturdy and without them, there would have been a lot more plastic left behind. I would consider them manadatory for the bike. A great unintentional advantage they bring is they become a great alternative footrest when touring. When we serviced the bikes, it was apparent that the bash plate had done more than its fair share of keeping everything from being destroyed. Again, without it, there may have been some oil puddles left in the Kaokoveld.

If there was any critisism of the system, the plates bolts are rounded allen key bolts, they need to be countersunk as a few were difficult to get out as they had seen a rock or two and it made it impossible to get the allen key in.

The Go Gravel radiator  was also key in keeping rubbish and ricocheting rocks out of the radiator.

I have to agree with Hardy.

The contestants had a ball but there are some unsung heroes who deserve special mention.

Ockie Vermeulen did an outstanding job to see to everybody's wellbeing and health. Always ready with medical assistance, water and a compressor.

The ladies who saw to all being well fed and having food ready for the hungry masses.

Jaco, John and Christoffel - these guys had a massive responsibility in leading the way, assisting any contestant who needed help and seeing to the convoy of bikes ultimately safely getting back to Windhoek. They did an exceptional job from my point of view and deserve as much credit as the organizers and Honda for putting this together.

I do not think anyone realizes how much logistics happens behind the scenes and to execute a huge operation like this one must have a very capable team. Well done to Hardy and Specialized Adventures for the way the whole team pulled together to make this a success.

Essentially the CRF is a under stressed long stroke (feel slightly lazy) motor. But it produces lots of usable power and will be very reliable. Case in point see how many old AT's are still riding around.

Jeez - doesn't this make me wish that I was up there right now!! Looks like everyone had the experience of a lifetime.

Thanks to Andrew for keeping us up to date. Only figured out after chatting to a mate that "CraigofCapeTown" was the Craig on the AT in Andrew / Kamanya's first Namibia ride report here many moons back (2006 ish?). Pity to see that he's now in New Zealand - Craig - do you remember the days of smousing cooldrinks and frozfruit on Clifton?

Interesting to hear how the new AT power delivery works compared to KTM. The original "spec" for the NXR back in the 80's (the Dakar predecessor on which the Africa Twin 650's and 750's was based) was quite specific - they didn't really mind / want a huge amount of HP, but were looking for very linear power delivery. If you look at the dyno charts for the XRV750, the torque and HP are extremely linear, with max torque and hp toward the redline, but going up in a straight line from low revs. Unfortunately, being a "V" it doesn't like revs under 2500 though. The parralel twin probably sorted that out.

Looks like they carried that spec forward to the CRF.

Good to see ol Basil from Uis popped along to spectate. If memory serves, his AT is the XRV650?

Looking forward to some writeup's on the Quest.

Hi Everyone

The crew only got back late last night after a tough two days on the road etc.

I will try to add value to the detailed ride report that the WD contestants will compile later. I do however would like to thank all of them, the WD contestants, and the crew members, John Webb (Tau), Christoffel Lombard (Hingsding), en Jaco Kirsten (Jacko) for making this the special event it was.
Great riders, great adventurers and great friends, all of them.

Cheers
Hardy

And it goes quietly beyond...

To have pulled this off, not just without a hitch, but with all machines and all people happy and in one piece, is truly a feat. And I have no doubt that this is going to put Honda, and particularly the Africa Twin right back where they belong - at the top of the dual-sport/adventure pile!

You'd think that Hardy and his team must have been pushed to the absolute limit, working hard to ensure that their own operation ran like clockwork, but still they had the energy and grace to help an errant traveller who'd had a mishap just a day ahead of them. There will be more on this story later in a separate thread, but suffice to say; if it weren't for the good humanity in Hardy and his team, my bike would still be sitting out in the Marienfluss somewhere, instead of in my garage, where it is right now.

Thank you thank you thank you Hardy and friends.  It's people like you that make the world a good place to hang out!

My helmet camera's mounting broke off on the first day we did any technical riding. So unfortunately not much footage from my side :(

Did get a few interesting things though, so here's a video of one of the sandy crossings we went through. There were plenty like this on the way:

It seems like Honda is heading for a new headache.
I went to pickup my sons crashbars at Umhlanga and was told that there are only a few dct AT's available in the country, they had a sale due to the customer reading reviews from quest.
Well done to Hardy and Honda. :thumleft:

Thanks to Andrew for keeping us up to date. Only figured out after chatting to a mate that "CraigofCapeTown" was the Craig on the AT in Andrew / Kamanya's first Namibia ride report here many moons back (2006 ish?). Pity to see that he's now in New Zealand - Craig - do you remember the days of smousing cooldrinks and frozfruit on Clifton?

Yup - sure do - crazy days!

Question on sound?
Manual vs Auto box
Does the DTC have a flatter sound than the manual?

I notice this on scooters & even bigger auto cars with performance exhausts....the sound sounds 'flat' ?

This is because the DCT, and even the elementary scooter varying pulley drive systems, keeps the revs in the powerband. A manual gearbox needs to be a very close-ratio box to come close.

In my humble opinion; best ride report ever, major respect to all. in many of the photographs Minxy was the only one smiling, well done girl, absolute respect.

I'm not sure why I haven't read the reports of the Quest as I'm a frequent visitor to Kaokoland but I've spent the best part of Friday evening and today taking in the entire thread.

Wow what a feat to pull this off as an event with so many bikes, unknown skill levels and for starts anyway mostly strangers.

Hats off to True Adventure, Honda, Specialized Adventures and the team.

And most of all that the guys (and gal) managed with the big twins in some really gnarly terrain.

If reading this thread dosen't get a hole new bunch of riders fired up to ride Northern Namibia then nothing will.

I've loved the different perspectives from the different teams and even the between the two team members.

Salute to all.

And sadly one serious gripe and something that could effect all future trips in the area.

On the sand tracks to Brandberg the guys were riding off track for long sections and properly destroying the landscape.

I once posted a tour pic on Facebook 2 years ago with a client simply parked alongside the tracks and I received a string of emails and comments from Namibians and local guides freaking out . These included threats of banning etc.

I guess the riders were unaware and the organizers slipped up in passing this on. If not penalties should have been issued.

For the sake of the greater ride community it might be a good idea to remove all the incriminating footage before we get into trouble with the green brigade.

HI Johnny

I instructed them to ride next to the track, where the dwarf shrub Tephrosia monophylla, short-lived, pioneer species, such as the herbs Gisekia africana, Limeum argute-carinatum and Tribulus terrestris as well as the grass Anthephora schinzii were dominant in the the stretches of endless sand next to the track. None of the above mentioned is protected flora (classified in the same category as the Mopane tree that we all use for firewood in the north.)

Like yourself, I know the area well and the flora in that area is not what you would call holy.

Despite the above, I agree with your sentiments, and you are correct. I will probably, in future, plan the last day when I am in a joyful mood.

My mistake and my apologies if I did upset anyone.

Cheers
Hardy

Thanks Hardy, good to know.

As I mentioned I've been kakked out on social media and email when my lot were seen riding there.

I've also been told not to go near the canyons and river beds by the local guides. Some pretty touchy guys around, especially the lodge owners.

Cheers
John

And once again congrats on putting on what seems like the trip of the century.  Must have taken some planning to get that show together.
I run small groups of no more than 6 in a simpler format and that gives me grey hairs.

Johnny - They have no right to ask/tell you to stay out of anything except their private property.

I discussed this very issue with several tourism and wildlife officials in WH and the answer was unanimous:

Of course they don't want you there - their guests will find out that you don't need to spend 12k a day to see (and sleep) in the area.
You contribute a lot more where it matters compared to any of these so-called lodges. Wilderness Safaris and most of the other operators have dollar and euro accounts which means the money never sees Namibia.

Saw a fishing program recently on 'Yellow's' in the Orange River which also had local guides and property owners trying to 'regulate' the river and access - same story couched in conservation and goody goody stuff ... all the way to their bank.  ::)
