Title: 690 think fuel issue
Post by: DJLSteenkamp on October 22, 2017, 06:09:15 pm
Need help. Went on a ride yesterday and every now and then the bike whould lose power an die.
Struggle to start for about 5min and then runs fine for anything between 5 to 20km.

I changed my fuel filter and nou the bike starts and idles prefect for about 5sec and die.

What can it be?

Also check if your injector is clogged... Happened to me, replaced all fuel filter and screens (the one by the injector) and cleaned out the injector. Been working ever since  :thumleft:

Looks like it is possible that it is a electrical issue.

Will try this afternoon to see if there is any shorts on the bike.

Filter in the right way?

Marbroza. Yes in the correct way.
I actually took the filter out of the tank and put it outside so I can see and change it without stripping to entire bike.

Reason for me thinking its electrical is because it idles perfect and then just die almost same as like cutting the kill switch.
Have see a video of a short on a spark plug and it sounds the same as my issue.

Is it exactly the same time from starting to cut out - every time?

Nope it is irregular. between about 5 and 30 sec.
I will disconnect the lights and start the bike in a dark room to see if I can spot any shorts on the frame when it cuts out.

Peeps check that screen filter on the injector. Could save you plenty money and time. Took over a year of hit and miss to sort out a 690 with similar symptoms. It was the filter. Note the experts could not solve the problem billed their time al the same.

I still have the filter in, its just not in the tank anymore. Will have to strip the pump to see if there is a filter on the pump itself.

Goodtoogo please can you help me locate the filter you are talking about. I checked everything and even after Rascal told me to check that I could not find it.

Will share some pictures this afternoon.

The filter that was in the tank is on that hose now.

if you take the hose off the injector does the pump supply fuel

Have you still got the rubber insert just below the spark plug?
If not, check for a short there.

Petrol sprays out like I think it should and bike will idle 100% for about 10sec and just die.

Did check spark plug and it looked ok with the rubber.  Wil start the bike again to see if I can see any shorts on frame or motor

Ok think its sorted now.
Took the fuel pump to 4 places to see if they have a pump for me and nothing.
One place suggested cleaning it out with compression stabilizer and now it is running fine. Will test it over the next few weeks.
