Title: My first DR650
Post by: SinisterSmiley on November 11, 2017, 08:45:19 pm
OK , so im new to this whole adventure biking thing. As a matter of  fact , I don't even have my learners (have car license) . x) But I have always wanted a cruiser to go with these lekker old ballies with the big beards cruising to Margate every Sunday  :)

So , i jumped into the deep end after my brother-in-law ( @DJLSteenkamp ) convinced me that im still young (21) and I should rather get a adventure bike... alrighty then , off to Gumtree , and after looking at a few KTM's , Hondas , BMWs and Yamas. I Decided to go with the DR650. Very nice condition 2009 model , serviced , new sprocket, chain  and tyres. I Went and looked at the bike everything all in good nic. So i paid happily and off I went.
With the inspiration from @m0lt3n (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=14258) (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=204555.0 (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=204555.0)), I am going to document all the changes , work and problems as they happen. So for anyone who wants to read up on  a noob , come along for the ride...   :deal:

My 1st mod. I took the stock bulky mirrors off and used my in-laws old KTM mirros (he has fold able mirrors now).

Daar was net so n swart DR by n dealer in KZN waarin ek belang gestel het maar hy het nie oorspronklike sleutels gehad nie, toe trek ek kop uit want ek is te ver en sou die bike blind moes koop.
Lekker bikes, ek het self n ou model gehad maar sy seat was bietnie hard vir my!

3. Sitplek geshave en link en forks gedrop (ek's 'n kortgat)
4. Stewiger handlebars (standaard gebuig in val)
5. Short levers
6. BreŽr footpegs
7. Footpeg lowering kit
8. Wind screen
9. Suspensie
10. Luggage racks
11. Beter hooflig gloeilamp
13. Case savers vir enjin
14. Bash plate

Ah yes of course.
And to be on the safe side, thread a spare clutch cable alongside the existing one.

Roes die tenk? Hy gaan moet begin spaar, nuwe long range tanks is duur, en tweedehandse tenks is skaars :o

Unfortunately we are in Durban (The ocean is in front of my house) , so I will need to spray some parts to try and minimize the rust , the rust on my tank is already underneath my tanks paint. I will post a picture when i get home. The Suzuki Dealership has a white DR tank for thousand-something bucks.
Not sure if its worth buying , or if i should just try and get a long range tank .
I have read the Namibia RR for "Travels through God’s own motorcycle country" (If anyone has not read that master piece http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=215299.0) the Blue Suzuki's (Buttercup) Clutch Cable snapped , so I already learned to have extra clutch cable.

Uitstekende RR daai! Die "anemic cow Buttercup" het my baie trots gemaak op my DRs

As jy by die see bly, kan jy maar net sowel eerder 'n long range tank kry.

Lekker ry in Lesotho! I'm very jealous, I'd love to ride there.

Ek geniet my "hard core" ritte in Swaziland!

Screens for Bikes in AustraliŽ, as ek dit reg het.

Bashplate van Hyde. Eerste prototipe, waarvoor hierdie DR gebruik is. Hulle is meestal swart.

PSP Racing maak netjiese aluminium bash plates en luggages racks. As jy in die klippe gaan ry, kry die Hyde.

Die tail pack is eintlik custom gemaak vir my Husky.

Tenk is 18l IMS. Die 25l Acerbis is te groot. R 5800 by Off Road Cycles.

Ok so about the above mentioned rust...
Do you guys have any short/mid term solutions, until i can gather myself to spend the money on a long range tank.
Do you guys think this could get into my petrol and cause issues?

Apparently, if it's only on the outside, sand it down, paint on a rust remover and spray over with colour of your choice.

If it's on the inside, there's apparently some solution with soda and batteries... PM Dux, he can give you information.

Holding thumbs you get it sorted!

Goeie naand,

Windskerm
Luggage plate
Laggage rack
Bash plate
Hand guards
Dit lyk my ek kan windskerm by Eikeboom kry.

Chopperpilot, jou fiets lyk baie netjies.

LRFan ek gaan jou email.

Henry

Reg so jammer dat ek so lank gevat het om bietjie nuwe goed te post , maar hier is dit nou.

I had a problem where I would go full throttle , the DR would give a Swallow/ hiccup (it would lose power) and then immediately backfire and then carry on picking up speed (sometimes 2 or 3 time in a row). We thought it was a carburetor/fuel issue (maybe still is?)
I took the bike to Rocket Racing and they say it was the kickstand switch , but right after i got the bike back , I broke down with no fuel coming out of the tank. Problem is there was still more than enough fuel to switch over to Reserve (so i can only drive on primary , wasting the bottom half of my tanks fuel ). There's maybe a problem with my fuel tap ? It seems like a small issue , just need to figure out what. ( I don't know if the side kickstand repair did the trick i will have to ride the bike properly 1st).
Anyways ... on to the positive :)

I also got myself new Handlebar and Hyde handguards , looks epic now  ;D

I also ordered a large Nomad bike bag for R750 (Grey Ripstop Canvas with red Webbing , double zips and Side pockets)
I had a Luggage plate made locally in Durban by Laser support services for super cheap (R267) , i just had to smooth down the edges , the CNC job left some rough edges that could cut the luggage. Made from 4.5mm Aluminium.
Now I just need to find a way to mount the plate to my bike's rear handles  (any ideas before I let @DJLSteenkamp show me his Welding skills? haha) , and then I just need to get it powder coated and im set.  8)

very chuffed so far  :ricky:

So to conclude, next on my list is (important stuff) :
I still need to make sure this petrol issue is sorted , I need a windshield , a better Helmet, get the Luggage plate fixed to the bike , and to go practise , practise practise...

Thanks for reading ^_^

Have a look at the design of PSP Racing's luggage plate bracket.

I had a similar issue with my DR losing power with full throttle... eventually discovered that there was a small in-line fuel filter inside the
curved fuel intake pipe of the carburetor that was clogged. Removed the filter entirely and problem solved! N

We have removed all the filters and even cleaned out the tank, stripped the carb but still same issue. Its almost as if it is running out of fuel.
He will have to test it again and if it still does the same I think we will have to change the jetting.

Thanks @NickTheGreek  , Will try and check all the points between the tank and the carb again , like @DJLSteenkamp  mentioned we did check this before , but don't know if we missed anything , maybe similar to your issue , but i am suspecting the fuel tap switch. at the moment.

It will be quick to check the fuel tap. Put the bike on its side and take it off. Check that the rubber diaphragm inside is not broken or misaligned. possibly restricting flow as well as not opening up the reserve side. (there should also be 2 little plastic filters. long one for normal flow and short one for reserve.

Yep,Thanks for always stirring  the pot @DJLSteenkamp  ...  :pot:
Fractured my  Left thumb / scaphoid after I messed up a steap(ish) uphill at the High Stakes Bike track at Cato ridge (the 4x4 area not the actual track part) .
had to get a operation and insert wire to correct it. Now the wait begins for the thumb to heal  :'(
Pictures:
Ignore the red circle , after the doctor explained to me again ,apparently it's worse than just that area (i put it there). They had to insert wire in the operation to fix where the bone and the joint meet (or something like that ?) Not too sure either way , i went today for a checkup , healing is going well at least for now

After the Op:

And yes the bike is ok , just a few scratches on the front fender and fork. The bike fell on top of me , so technically i broke the bikes falls and in turn i broke my finger (LOL) .

Thanks for sticking with me this far if people are still reading  :thumleft:
Cheers :sip:

Jammer  , Dinge was still nadat ek my duim gebreek het , en ek kon toe nie saam @DJLSteenkamp  lesotho toe gaan nie.
Nogal lus vir so iets  :drif:

Doen jy fisio, of ander duim oefening  >:D    :lol8:
