Title: BUYING A REBUILD BIKE
Post by: VANZ76 on December 13, 2017, 09:22:07 pm
I am in the process of looking for a larger motorbike, and selling my G650GS, to part fund the purchase. I have seen a particular F800GS 2012 model for sale at R60k. The owner is upfront that it was written-off by ons insurance, and "rebuilt" by BMW Donford's. It is registered as a Class 3 motorbike due to what happened to it.

Should I consider buying a rebuild? It is purely for commuting purposes and not as an investment to sell-on later. Aparently the display [mileage / gear change] was stolen whilst at Donford's because it stood there for some time, so they [Donfords] replaced it with another display module. However, the current owner says that it has only done approximately 13,000km but because BMW had to replace the display module, it displays the milage done from the bike it was taken from, which shows approximately 21,000km

Is R60k worth the spend if it is in really good nick, and goes well when taken for a test ride? How would the bike' s status as rebuild, affect insurance on it and would it pass it's roadworthy test?

Ask for a letter from Donfords stating that the bike was repaired as new.  If they do that, bargain of note.  At R60k, if you use it for a couple of years, you will get most of your money back when you sell, even if it takes a while longer with a skeptical buyer (code 3)

Some info on code 3 vehicles.
1. Generally cannot be financed.
2. Insurance may have special conditions.
3. Value drops approx 30% just because its code 3.
4. People are weary of buying them so re-sale market is limited.
5. They can work very well if you intend to keep them long term.

For R60k there are a bunch of good commuters out there.
I'd walk away from this deal, there are too many downsides, some mentioned above.

Go check that BMW 800 in the for sale section. Like new, 1000km, for a similar price

Nothing wrong with buying a well repaired code 3 but 60 is overpriced for the bike you describe. I'd say realistic value of a non-rebuild is maybe 75ish less 30% for code 3 at least. So if you can get the bike for 45-50 sure it's possibly an option. I have a code 3 F650GS Twin but I got it for a good price and intend on keeping it as my commuter indefinitely
