We're back in "civilization" ...  ::)

I belief it will take me a few days to try and compile a ride report and sort out the more than 600 pictures ...  :patch:

Yes I'm tired, but the past 9 days of my life was "stunning" !!!
We "only" did 3100km (budget & time doesn't allow for more  :-[), but what we've seen and experienced in this actually short distance, is just simply amazing and indeed a privilege for which I'm grateful !!!

Just a few random "starter" pictures as seen by the author's camera:

First few - Namaqualand/West Coast ...

Woensdag 27 Desember 2017 - at last !!!

We met at Chinno's Coffee Shop at Paddagat in George at 8am - suppose ...  ::)
Skolla realized the Triumph's licence disc was expiring on 29 Des, and as we were not sure whether Namibia will acknowledge the 21 days leeway like here, it was decided that best is for him to take out the new disc before leaving! Then I realized  :o I need a "Exit Letter" from BMW Insurance!!! Fortunately Janine from Lynn Schroeder BMW came to my saving and assisted me in getting one - she actually emailed it to my cell later the day - THANKS JANINE !!!

So we were able to start negotiating George's holiday traffic by 9:30am. To make up some time, we took the tar over a similar busy Outeniqua Pass to Oudtshoorn, and then across the Swartberg Pass. At "Kobus se Gat" we stopped for a cold one and the first "cheers" - just to calm the nerves a bit  :snorting:

Swartberg Pass was also extremely busy and dusty, and plan was to enjoy Lunch at "Prickly Pear" in Prins Albert - but just to find they've closed down !!!  :'( :'(
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 05, 2018, 12:08:02 pm
With "Prickly Pear" being closed - and Prins Albert also a bee-hive of activity, we decided to go for "Prins Albert Weg". We arrived there in the heat of the day, and quiet hungry!!!
Re-fuelled the bikes, and then some "Road-Kill" "sarmies" from a funny red container shop  :o - but boy was it good!!!  ;)
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 05, 2018, 12:16:56 pm
From "Prins Albert Weg" we went to Merweville - quiet and hot!!!
Then the fun really started with the amazing route over "Rammelkop" to Sutherland !!!
After taking the pictures on "Rammelkop" - my GS gave me a big "skrik" ! It started normally, but when I pulled off, it started to "hoes & poep", and died about 20meters later :o :o :'( Started up right away, and mercifully never repeated that !!!  O0 :thumleft:

In a "HOT" Sutherland  ::) - we stopped at the Hotel for some liquids... The day was getting long, and we were in two minds whether to call it quits for the day ...
But, we decided to push on a bit to Calvinia via Middelpos. It was a humble start to Billions of corrugations and loose surprises awaiting us over the next few days to follow ...  :ricky:
By this time the current and severe "Drought" also started to engrave itself in our minds ...  :o :( :(

In Calvinia we stopped at the Hotel  :-[ :-[ first - cause it has air-con !!!  :P
After "cooling" down a bit, we went next door to the SPAR for "braai-supplies", before heading to "Kleinplasie" just outside of town for the first night's camping... "Oubaas" the owner is friendly and helpful, has dry "braai-wood", clean rest rooms and in general just a great Karoo atmosphere & hospitality!!!

We were tired  :o :o - only the first night  ::) :-\
The camping was great, but I couldn't get my "lilo" inflated  ??? (forgot a pump  :-[), and the SPAR sauce for our "Boerewors Dogs" was exploding !!!  :o :o :o
Well, we had to be content with dry dogs and myself with only 1mm of R40 flat "lilo" between myself and the Karoo gravel ...  >:(

I so envy this ride!! Now you can see why I have done this trip 6 times in a row.

If you guys have time this year, August is great in Nam because it's cool in the mornings and not too hot by 2pm.

Let me know if you have place for 2 more AT riders next time.

I find August the worst. Easterly winds blow constantly from Botswana and the dust hangs in the air all the time.
I like April-May. :thumleft:

Day 2 - Thursday 28 December 2017 ...

We got up rather slowly and quietly ... now to get all the nonsense back on these "packed like donkey" bikes ...  ???
First duty to re-fuel at the first filling station from Williston's side ... and then something "sad & uncomfortable" happened ...  :(

After re-fuelling, I moved my bike away from the pumps and parked it in front of the empty showroom 5m away. Skolla followed and parked next to me. Dawie was still fuelling. Skolla went to the bathrooms, while I went for cold water & cool drink at the Kiosk. While inside I heard some "strange sounds and comments outside about bikes", but didn't really take any special notice. When I got outside I saw Dawie - rather pale in the face, walking around the Triumph with a piece of clutch lever in his one hand ... Apparently, as he parked his Twin next to the XCX, the panniers touched, resulting in both bikes going down!  :-[ The AT landed on the huge alu box, but the rather unprotected Triumph hit the concrete with a bang - leaving quite a few scars and the broken lever ...
I felt really sorry for both guys, but they handled the situation with aplomb  :thumleft: :thumleft: - with Dawie offering to pay the insurance excess, but the incident did leave some damage to the spirit of the group.

I suggested that we look for a nice breakfast place - just to settle our minds a bit, and I belief it worked ...  :-\
Then it was off to Loeriesfontein ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 05, 2018, 05:25:55 pm
In Loeriesfontein I took my time to pick out a six pack in the local Tops's refrigeration room ...
I had a wonderful piece of luggage - called a "cooler bag" !!!  8) 8) So we could enjoy 3 cold ones immediately, and keep the remaining 3 cold for later ...
From Loeriesfontein we headed through a silent, immensely dry and amazing landscape - direction Springbok.... Here you also cross the Sishen-Saldanha  railway line.
The corrugations and sand just kept on ever increasing as we went Northwest! I had a moment or two - as the confidence grew a bit "too BIG", and my speed increased a bit "too HIGH" ...  :o
Dawie was really enjoying the conditions - the Bugger grew-up in the Kalahari!!!  :xxbah:
Skolla was not at ease - not at all - and I belief his tyre pressures and suspension settings might have been a bit too hard for these circumstances ...  :patch:
One thing we all agreed on - it was extremely difficult - with the sun up high, coupled to the colour of the sand and little shadow lines, to distinguish between soft and hard, shallow and deep ...  :deal:

At the Kliprand-Bitterfontein T, after much consultation, we decided to go left towards Bitterfontein, and then later right on the N7 for the last bit to Garies ...
While standing at the T, tourists coming from Kliprand in a "Renta 4x4 Nissan" stopped to enquire where the closest tar is - they couldn't take it anymore ...  :imaposer: We passed them later on - still struggling with the conditions ... Now this is the driest landscape I've ever seen  - it's pitch black as if it burned!!!  :'( :'(
BTW  ::) Garies has the worst Hotel I've ever set feet in!!!  ::)

While we were having a coldish beer at Garies Hotel, we tried to find decent affordable accommodation, but the closest seemed to be Kamieskroon ...  ::)
Never even heard of the place, but was this a welcome surprise!!!  :3some:

While in Garies, Dawie booked a house/chalet in Kamieskroon. At first sight I was very sceptical, but as I've already mentioned - it was not only a surprise, but a bargain too - "The Cosy Cottage" or something ...
To buy decent meat there is another story, but we still managed to have a great "braai" while watching the sun set over the mountains and adjacent N7...

BTW - Kamieskroon has a decent Lodge too!!!  :thumleft:

Dag 3 - 29 Des 2017:

Skolla besluit om die "lyf" bietjie 'n blaaskans te gee - so hy sal op teer bly, terwyl Dawie en die uwe "the road less travelled" aanpak ...  :ricky:
Wat 'n "great" roete!!!

:patch:

"Kokerboom" roete vervolg ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 06, 2018, 08:50:16 am

:thumleft: :thumleft:

12:30 toe trek ons in by "Tauren" - darem op SupaQuick se aanbeveling!! Ontbyt raak toe middagete met yskoue verversings by !!!  O0 ;D

Naby Port Nolloth straf ons 'n 2-300m rooi dik sand "patch" teen "100 + plenty" --- ffff@k !!!  :o :o :o "Stand up + Open up + Close your eyes" !!!
:dousing:

By Port Nolloth draai ons links - rigting MacDougall baai se kampterrein.

Ja dit was n baie lekker trip gewees. Petrol kos R 15.39 in Springbok en R 15.40 by Alexanderbaai.

Why you move your bikes across the street from the gathering?  :imaposer: :imaposer: :lol8:

Kidding!!  You don't have to answer  :imaposer:

Even though my translator is shit, I figured it out.

Petrol is 14.89 rand per liter, correct?

 :thumleft: :lol8:

Yes, and the same petrol imported from the RSA, costs R12.20 in Namibia!!!  :xxbah: :xxbah:
Ffffooking government!!!  :xxbah: :xxbah:

Day 4 - 30 Dec 2017:

After enjoying "Camp coffee", we packed the wet, salty and sandy tents & other luggage. Skolla and Dawie went looking for a cell phone shop for roaming issues, while I went to have another coffee at the Hotel. We ended up having breakfast at the Hotel - fortunately !!  :peepwall:

After re-fuelling the bikes too, it was the long and windy road to Alexander Bay. Now what a rare strange place this is!!! :eek7:
It's a mix of "ghost buildings" and rusted machines spreaded randomly  across a flood plain/desert ...

The environmental damage left behind by the greedy diamond industry is shocking - to say the least!!  :o :o
It feels like a scene from a movie - a movie shot after normal life on earth ended!!  :'(

With some getting lost in the chaos, we finally ended up at the "end of the road", as close as we could get to the Orange River mouth.
When Dawie pulled it, we all had a huge "skrik" - there was clouds of thick white smoke pouring out from underneath the fairing and instruments!!!  ??? :o
Fortunately it was only his own network of wires - coupled directly from the battery - for charging this and pumping that purposes!!! He quickly dislocated the melted wires and removed most of his own wiring harness ... No damage to the bike - as the short circuit had nothing to do with the bike's own wiring - but I was a little concerned about the battery - but that turned out to also be fine!!  ;)

Alexander Bay was quite and experience for me - leaving you with a somewhat muted, depressed and angry feeling....
We concluded the visit with the final re-fuel for the bikes in SA, nothing else available to be bought ...

Now we were on our way into an unknown desert to enter Namibia ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 06, 2018, 02:19:36 pm
The hours , scenery and experience following Alexander Bay, was even more "jaw-dropping" ...
We rode East next to the Orange River - the only thing with colour - the water in the river!!  :eek7:

When we got to the turn-off left to Ais Ais/Richtersveld, we met the most amazing lady - on her way back to Mpumalhanga !!! She did a solo on a Katoom 690 - from I think Klerksdorp, down the Botswana border and through Southern Namibia - all by herself!!!  :wav: :wav: :wav:
That is serias BALLS - RESPECT !!!

After enjoying her conversation for a while, taking pictures across the two camps, we wished each other luck, and off we went ...

The road conditions deteriorated steadily as the kms past by... Our new lady friend told us that Namibia's conditions will be a revelation - way better than in SA!!
Myself and Dawie maintained between 80-90 km/h - not too fast and you can stay on top of the corrugations and sand - more or less ...  :patch:
But Skolla was really struggling  :( :(, not having a great time at all ...

We kept on going in the immense heat - finally reaching the first gate to the Richtersveld Park. The bloke in charge there - told us it's been 4yrs since they've seen a "grader" in that area ...  :o

From the gate to Sendelingsdrif is around 20k's (if anything on your bike is just 2% loose - you will loose it here!!!) - if memory serves me correct, and we reached the Park's buildings quite dehydrated ...
After a coldish Stoney  ::), we re-fuelled again  ::) - just to make sure ...
Then it was time for all the bloody paperwork and checks - in scorching heat - no AC's !!!  ???

The main Parks Board building is extremely "smart", with AC - and for that you have to pay R110 for the ferry ...  :ricky:
The ferry ride was a bit fast and over too quickly ...  ??? The river is absolutely beautiful here in the desert surroundings ...

Skolla, I believe that a different front tyre will give you a lot more confidence in the front end of our XCX. I 100% trust the E-07 but for the rear only. Next time you plan any sandy section rides go for an E-10 front. Itís a world of difference.

From the ferry it was a mere 2km to the Namibian border post - neat and professional !!!  :thumleft:
After all the "entry-forms", we each had to pay R177 road tax ...  :o

At first the gravel after the post was sweat, and then the loose unstable stuff started again - to a tired Skolla's frustration ...  :(

We reached Rosh Pinah at about 16:00, tired, thirsty and without accommodation... I saw a sign about some or other lodge, and we followed it. The accommodation was a bit over our budgets, but the drinks was affordable and ice cold!!!  O0 That gave us some time to brainstorm our situation ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 06, 2018, 07:41:20 pm
We were pointed to a "Backpackers" business on the other side of the main road. We investigated - just to find an old neglected establishment, with small wooden cabins in the middle of a squatters camp!!!  :o :xxbah:

There we got directions to Amica Guesthouse - back on the other side again ...  ::) We found an extremely neat establishment, and I went inside to enquire ...  :o :o :o R930 per person!!!  :'( :'(
Now Rosh Pinah is a pure mining town - and all developments are probably not only initiated by the mining industry, but also owned by them ....

I told the very friendly lady that sadly the price is completely out of our range - even more expensive than the first lodge!!! The only camping site has also closed down ...  :( ... and anything else was too far away in our situation ...
I guess she must have felt sorry for us, because she offered the accommodation to us at little more than half price!!! Thank you, thank you!!!  ;) :)

We spent a quiet evening in 4 star luxury, each of our rooms with a stunning view over the desert ...  8)

What a day!!!

Always enjoy you guys RR, this one is no different.  Thanks for sharing.   :thumleft: :thumleft:

Just a tip for Skolla, depending on your fitness level.  I always say I will get fit for the next long trip but that neva happens.  This then result in me being stuffed on day 4/5/6 depending on road and weather conditions.  I now therefor normally take a proper REST DAY on day 5 to reload for the trip ahead.  And so I repeat the rest days every 5 or so days.  The constant heat and immense concentration on bad roads will take its toll on your  body and mind if your fitness levels are not up to scratch.  When I look at the phodies in this RR it is clear that Skolla is mentally drained.  He is a much better rider than what he makes out to be.  He should have made this trip with ease.  I think he should have had a rest day somewhere along the road.
Your tyre choice and the setup on your bike, such as worn shocks can also have a huge inpack on the overall handling of the bike.

But hats of to all of you, I know that area well and there is no way in hell that I will attempt it during December/January.  The heat is not my friend, I therefor prefer going there April/May.  I have a friend that can only get leave during Dec and he nags me continuously to do a Nam trip during Dec, needles to say, it will never happen.   :eek7:   .       .

Day 5 - 31 Dec 2017:

We left Rosh Pinah without much fuss - after a great night's rest in luxury!!    The 160km odd tar was ahead to Aus. We stopped quite often for pictures, and once for coffee and road-side breakfast!!  :P The ever changing scenery in the Namib must be the "thing" that makes tours to Namibia so addictive!!!  :thumleft: :thumleft: It's as if you just can't get enough, and it's actually difficult to try and absorb everything ...

When we left Aus, it was with a feeling of excitement!! It would be the first time that either of us will see Luderitz Bay, and one of the planning objectives of this tour was to spend old/new year in Luderitz ...

a Few km's from Aus - you suddenly enter the REAL DESERT !!!  :eek7: :eek7: AMAZING ... STUNNING ... O0 :thumleft:

Every half an hour or so of riding you will see the sad remains from some unknown people's life, a pity these ghost houses couldn't tell the real story ...  :( :(

The Bahnhof Hotel's Hansa draught led to a few unscheduled stops  ::) ::), as it was also getting cooler and cooler towards Luderitz ...  :patch:

take a proper REST DAY on day 5

:deal: ;)

Unfortunately the Diaz Coffee Shop closed at 6pm, that meant that we finished our lovely fish & calamari too early for an old year's evening.
We did manage to buy a bottle of Sparkling Wine though - ya know - for the new year's toast later on ...  :biggrin

But much later - our Kalahari companion - came to our rescue with a delicately prepared dish of "2 minute noodles and mussels + Durban curry" !!!  :eek7: ::)

More or less at the same time - this very RR was born on that outside deck - bit too smelly to sit inside ...  :P

Day 6 - Monday 1 January 2018:

I got up a bit "latish" ...  :-[ , and were surprised to see Skolla all dressed-up and loaded !!  :o
He was on his way, back home. alone!!  :( :o
Next thing I noticed was that the wind was really howling outside!!!

It was quite a bucket of cold water in the face to be honest, like what now ... but in a sense I was expecting it for a while ... but still sad!

We walked Skolla to his bike, and without much ado he disappeared down the street and buildings ...  :(

We later learned that he reached VanRhynsdorp for the day  :o - fighting a storm wind all the way, and exiting Namibia at Oranjemund ...

The next day by noon he was home in George!!!  :eek7: :o

We received this picture from him, taken the evening in VanRhynsdorp at a B&B:

Myself and Dawie went about our business - quietly, and left about 45min later....
Plan was to do the 19km South to Diaz Point, enjoy coffee there at the famous coffee shop, come back, fuel, and hit the long long road to the Fish River Canyon ...

The ride to Diaz Point was amazing and absolutely worthwhile!!!
Let the pictures speak ...

After this Kolmanskop experience, we had around 120km ahead to Aus, with the desert at its best, the wind hammering us from the South, sandblasting us every now and then ...
Dawie was riding in front of me, I'm sure at a lean angle of at least 20 degrees off vertical, his bike leaving a wake of sand to the down-wind side!!  :o

In Aus we re-fuelled, and enjoyed a may I say "well-deserved" Hansa Draught - again at the Bahnhof, complimented by excellent sarmies!!  :thumleft:

... and then the boring tar to Seeheim via Goageb ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 07, 2018, 05:33:11 pm
The wind tried its best to keep us away from the Fish river, but we won ...
My helmet's peak was broken, and we had to do "roadside" repairs every now and then - with Pratley Steel ...  ::) ... and then I had to ride with one hand for a while, holding the peak with the other for the glue to dry ...

Hobas campsite was ok - I mean there's actually lots of shady trees - just a bit expensive (R190p/p), but unfortunately a bit neglected and dirty ...
There was quiet a few campers, and a bus full of tourists arrived later on - noisy bunch!!  :patch:

Our meal was ... well primitive! The Bacon Kips I bought from the Camp Kiosk at R30, and the sausage was from Aus's garage shop at R16 ... Ice is an absolute novelty here - R30 for half a small bag!!!  :eek7: a Single Whiskey in a tall glass full of ice is R13 - much better value!!!  :ricky: The Bar area is an extremely "smart" affair!!!

Fortunately a young honey-moon couple in a Hilux with rooftop tent pulled in later next to us - and they had a compressor with the correct fitting for my infamous shocking green lilo ...  :P

I slept well !!!

300 km verskil is net mooi vanaf Keetmans na Vioolsdift. Hele entjie.

I do not belief so Ian - it is Restricted Area.
There is companies offering 4x4 tours up the coast though ... Maybe somebody else on here can shed some light on this ...

Day 7 - Tuesday 2 Jan 2018:

We packed early - without having coffee ...  :'(
But, then we rode the 10k's to the Canyon, for which we've paid 70bucks the previous afternoon. 70bucks extremely well spent!!!  :deal:

I couldn't stop taking pictures - it's awesome - and the pictures doesn't do it any justice at all !!!

We made coffee and just enjoyed the spectacular view and atmosphere ... while finishing the previous night's Bacon Kips and watching and feeding some birds ... a Canyon charter plane also flew past ...

Then the "Philistines" arrived and we left - doing some more viewing from other outlook points ...

Last few of the Canyon ...

We rode the 10k's back to camp, enjoyed a cold beer at the kiosk, and left - direction Grunau ...

We rode past the Canon Roadhouse again, to turn right at the T later on. a Few beautiful "Gemsbokke" entertained us on the way through an ever changing desert landscape ...

On way to Grunau and an unleaded re-fuel for the bikes, and Red Bull for the riders ... (yes, we re-fuelled at every opportunity, since you don't know for sure if fuel will be available everywhere ...)

We decided to dispose off the 50k's tar to Karasburg quickly, and try to find something decent to eat there ...  :-\
But Karasburg turned out to be quiet a "dump", with lots of beggars and "con-artists" trying to sell "Italian monopoly" money to you ...  :xxbah: :xxbah:

So we left the place a.s.a.p. !! ... albeit without any supplies ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 08, 2018, 04:28:53 pm
Instead of turning left just outside of Karasburg towards Velloorsdrif, we decided to take the detour route via Warmbad - a very good decision!!
The almost ghost town of Warmbad is something sad, but worthwhile seeing!! And the - some places - remains of a road from here down some tributaries of the Orange river even better!!!  :deal:
Yes, I had a few moments, and couldn't stop much for pictures, cause you are either gunning it and praying to stay upright, or not willing to stop for a picture - just to try and catch that darn Red AT's dust afterwards ...  :peepwall: ... damn Kalahari boy!!!  >:(

Eventually we stopped to share a can of Bully Beef  ::) and a Coke ...  ::) ... and rest a bit ...  ???

My "wish list" vir hierdie toer was:
1.   a Great time
2.   Alexander Bay
3.   Sendelings drift
4.   Luderitz

Die res was net 'n bonus!!!  ;)

First stop in Pofadder was the Hotel ...  :-[ ... to get some fluids into our dried-out bodies, so we can think and find accommodation ...
Must say the Hotel's prices is also very acceptable!

Dawie did some research and found us a small "granny-flat" - place called "Lekkerbly" - not the website "Lekkerbly" ...
Now this was really a great find!!! More friendly and hospitable people you won't find, at very reasonable prices in a clean, well equipped and quiet environment ...  :thumleft:

Now I have been riding a spare air-filter along for 2500km now, and decided it was time to install it. Old one was quite dirty, especially when I emptied it on a white A4 page - lots of red Namib sand ...  :o

We walked to town to buy drinks and meat, and then a "rustige" Namaqualand "braai" - under the full moon!!!

BTW - the local Foodzone sells excellent meat!!!

I really have to say - I love Pofadder !!!  :3some:

Now what a small world!!!  :o :o If you've followed this RR, you will remember that Dawie & me did a wonderful stretch of "Mountain dirt" between Kamieskroon and Springbok on Day3. Now it turned out that we rode across our Lekkerbly's host - Uncle Alwyn's farm!! Now people - he is quite a character !!!  :lol8: 8) He just wanted us to come and braai on his own fire ... He assured us that it is only 20 out of 365 days per year that he doesn't braai - and on those 20days he makes "potjie-kos" outside in the braai!!!  :eek7: :imaposer:

We later joined him, his wife and son "Alwie" - an excellent musician - with some other guests around their braai ... Alwie entertained everybody with live music - and in between father Alwyn entertained us with his Namaqualand stories ...  :thumleft: :thumleft: :lol8:

I ended up buying a CD - look out for "Alwie Carstens" - if you like some serious genuine Namaqualand music - many of the songs written by his mother!!  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Day 8 - Wednesday 3 January:

From Pofadder we aimed as straight as possible for Prins Albert. We left a bit late, and took the dirt to Brandvlei via Halfway. Standard Karoo gravel with the normal 3 tracks and "middle-mannetjies"  and "side-mannetjies" with fine loose gravel ... Closer to Halfway there is some surprises, one that almost caught me out while day-dreaming at 120 !!  :o :-[

I was still cruising "lekka" in the left track - when suddenly like a heap of spreaded out fine gravel/coarse sand was in front of me ...  :o Simultaneously I noticed that the other 2 tracks goes around this approx. 20m long obstacle, but it was way too late for me ... So All I could do is open up ...  :patch:
I now know where the saying "sien jou gat" comes from - cause I could see my own number plate a few times ...  :eek7:

Nevertheless, we had one tall beer left - which I took for medical reasons at an old abandoned warehouse at Halfway station ...  only gave Dawie a little bit ... :laughing7:

From Halfway to Brandvlei, the road becomes much more interesting ...
Kalahari-boy was flying, while I took it a bit more careful - still a bit "bewerig" from the earlier fright ...  :P

Total distance is 221km from Pofadder to Brandvlei ...

Now what a surprise Brandvlei turned out to be!!! Super neat filling station and co-op with super cool air con, neat town and the great "Windpomp Restaurant" !!!  :thumleft: :thumleft:
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....
Post by: XRRX on January 09, 2018, 03:00:30 pm
We really had a great time at this Restaurant - and I had a humdinger of a BURGER !!!  :eek7: :o :thumleft: :thumleft:

As we were leaving, a family walked in - the father asked who is the owner of the BMW outside - it has a flat!!!  :o :o ... thought he was joking, but not!!!  :'( :'(

Now slowly back to the co-op and neat filling station to get some shade for this schlepp ... Now remember - my spare tube now was the thin bicycle type one I bought on Day 3 in Springbok - and this is Brandvlei... The one that came from the wheel - snake-bite again with accompanying smiley in the rim ...  :xxbah:

a Guy at the co-op said the local tyre shop sell these kind of things ...  ::) ::)
While I was removing everything and getting everything ready, Dawie went to the tyre shop, and "wr@gtig" - a good old Kenda real bike tube at R150 in Brandvlei of all places ...  :ricky:

45 min later we were ready to go - just a bit sweaty!!!

It was getting late now after that "Mo@rse" burger and flat tyre, but we hook up for the 115km gravel to Williston ...

 :imaposer: :thumleft:

Regarding your question on the AT - yes, absolutely!! It is THE bike to go to remote places as far as I'm concerned!! Nothing seems to fuss it in the least ... It is heavier on fuel than my 800 - approx. 2l/tank roughly, but it did carry more weight than my bike, as well as the additional wind resistance of those two HUGE aluminium boxes!!  :o ::)
My choice would be the new Adventure Sports version with the 24l tank ...  ;) :drif:

Brandvlei to Williston is a nice road in the sense that the scenery changes more frequently, and the conditions is as such that you won't start "day-dreaming", you need to focus a bit to choose as well as stay in the correct track ...
Title: Re: Touch the Desert - Namaqua - Namibia ....

We arrived in Williston quite dehydrated, after 338km gravel and one flat, and stopped at "Manna's" for a cold one ... We ended up deciding to call it a day - not as far as we wanted to be, but no rush really, and went on to enjoy some supper there too - great place!!! Williston must be the most improved  Karoo town I've seen in years!!! They've even installed overhead cameras in some streets, so the crime rate has apparently been reduced dramatically too!  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Day 9 - Thursday 4 Jan 2018: ... :'(

Jip, all good things has to end hey ...

The last day of any successful trip always have me in two minds:
1.   Sad - the last day ...
2.   Excited - to see the family and pets ::) again ...

We actually wanted to camp in a dry riverbed in the Oukloofpass the previous night, but mainly due to the flat tyre and maybe some laziness, we never got to that ...  :(
We have done Oukloof a few times previously, so I suggested we leave that and the camping idea for another time... Let's just take the straighter and unfortunately tar Theekloof Pass route to LeeuGamka...

From Halfway to Brandvlei, the road becomes much more interesting ...
Kalahari-boy was flying, while I took it a bit more careful - still a bit "bewerig" from the earlier fright ...

Total distance is 221km from Pofadder to Brandvlei ...

Now what a surprise Brandvlei turned out to be!!! Super neat filling station and co-op with super cool air con, neat town and the great "Windpomp Restaurant" !!!  :thumleft: :thumleft:
Ai.
Hoe verlang ek nou.

Sy is seker so 15 jaar terug oorlede toe is plek verkoop.
Het baie as kind daar tyd deurgebring.

Just got a bloody huge shocker of a telephone bill !!!  :xxbah: :xxbah: :xxbah:
Bloody Vodacom!!! Charged me R613,16 per day for data roaming - R1226,32 for 30&31 December only - and I've only used 6,12mb data in these 2 days !!!  :xxbah: :xxbah: :xxbah:

I can gladly live with my 2 x new tubes and front rim with smiley, as well as my broken number plate bracket (R27  ::) ), as well as my buggered old helmet (own fault), as well as my torn right Berick boot, as well as all the wear and tear on bike and everything, but to pay R613 for basically 3mb of whatsapps, is ludicrous !!!
Sorry for the rant ...  :-[

But, beware !!!

Hi Chris L
Yeah have taken it for a spin, "Lekker" bike goes well but have not had the privilege to ride it on gravel/sand yet. although when me and Ian done our last trip together, he was on the new Twin and she went like a dream on the sand. As too me buying one, yip have thought about it, i like the bike but am always skeptical with all of the bloody electronics that can go wrong. I still like the old Twin but "Ya" they are getting along in the years and one has too at some stage upgrade. That been said yip i think its a good bike and if i had to choose between the Dp's i scheme i will go for the twin. ;D :ricky:

Daai Vodacom bill is mal.

Band is seker bietjie meer as halfsluit, so ek reken ek sal Ī 7000 km kry. :ricky:
