Tankwa Cross Country Rally 2018 – 3rd Edition.

Hi Everyone,
After two successful Tankwa events and having received a number of phone calls herewith some basic information so long. We have been asked about the possibility of an adventure class, we are considering ADV bikes however there is no way we want to dilute the quality of routes so plans are that they could skip some sections. We are working on extended routes and acquired more farms, in fact Dave is up there this weekend to explore a liaison to Middelpos and a special for Rally bikes and I have another one planned for a secret location.

Motorsport SA Affiliated:  Yes the event will be again run under the auspices of MSA as we (WCOC) operate within their structure/regulations with safety paramount. Competitors only require a MSA club license however would have to have raced at Rally, Off-road or Enduro before.

Region.
The event takes place in the Tankwa / Hantam region in the Northern Cape with the nearest town being that of Calvinia.  Tankwa is known for its extreme climate and harsh environment, which will test the best. The variety of terrain promises to level the playing fields amongst competitors challenging both Man and Machine.

Objective.
•   Motorsport SA affiliated Cross Country Rally race catering for Rally Bikes and Off-road Bikes/Quads.
•   Rally Bikes navigation be means of Rally Book
•   Off-Road Bikes/ Quads navigation by means of GPS.
•   To test Navigation skills.
•   To test competitor all round skills and endurance.
•   Ability to read the terrain.
•   Race in one’s own safety zone and to anticipate.
•   For both man and machine to finish.
•   Adventure for Spectators and Service Crews.

Date 21-23rd Sept.

Venue: Race HQ Rooiputs 60km south of Calvinia
    On central race HQ and Tented Village/campsite (DSP).
•   All Stages and liaisons start and finish at main DSP operating in a clover leaf format
•   Transponder timing (ZA timing).
•   Three day Cross Country.
•   Day 1  Time Trial + Race section 2
•   Day 2 Marathon (race section 3)
•   Day 3 Mountain (race section 4)

   Off-road bikes/quads Outside refuels/service points at max 70km (Non roadworthy).
•   Access to selected service points by service crews.
•   Solo competitor’s fuel delivered by WCOC service truck refuel points.
•   Off-road Bikes/Quads approx. 750km.
•   GPS Equivalent of Garmin Etrax 10, 20, or 30.

   Rally class required to have minimum 250km range and roadworthy bikes.
•   Rally class no outside assistance except at DSP.
•   Rally Bikes approx. 1000km.
•   Rally Navigator Roadbook.

More info to follow soon.
Kind Regards Clive.

Maybe get a poster or two up in our and other stores, advertising the event, closer to the time?

Well done, looks like another well-planned event.  :thumleft:
Cheers

So this is looking interesting.  If i understand it correctly if i have an offroad, unlicensed bike with a GPS i can race it?
On the lMSA side, i havent raced for some time, but have in the past, will this work in terms of getting an MSA license.

The clover leaf plan makes it feasible to get to participate without having to get a whole support crew together, so lekker plan there!

If I may answer on Offroads behalf (he's busy frantically getting things ready for the Wellington race on Sat):

if i have an offroad, unlicensed bike with a GPS i can race it? - 100% correct  :thumleft:

will this work in terms of getting an MSA license. - You can take out a license for the event, it's cheaper than a yearly license.

Post by: Offroad2 on March 14, 2018, 04:49:24 pm
Thanks for answering Brett - to add to Brett's reply minimum MSA license is a Club Lic  or you can take a One Event License (No WOW license for Tankwa). Personally I would take a club license, it is not expensive and go get a race or two under the belt at GXCC or similar.

Correct the Off-Road Bikes (non roadworthy bikes) will not be doing liaison sections but will need GPS.

Will update as we progress - going to be busy in between with only eight weeks to Cere Koue Bokkeveld National Off-road,  however plans are on track.

I forgot to add - People have been asking about entry fee.
First we need to make sure about the routes before final Regulations submitted to MSA for approval before we can finalise. This should not be an issue as MSA approved & were 100% happy with the first two events. However it is our AIM to keep Off-road entries to around 5k and hopeful Rally +- 6.5K.
Please understand we don't make money from this event only trying to cover costs. Think about it .... Electronic timing (ZA timing), MSA officials, 2017 had three Life support teams + air ambulance on standby, I still have my cash slips for track/route setting diesel cost =30K of which WCOC covered.
Any previous participant will tell you it was a absolute bargain.

Live Tankwa 2018 !

All the pictures are real capture from the previous two events.
2018 Preparations are on track and additional land negotiations are active. Now that we have just dusted the Koue Bokkeveld 400 National we step up the Tankwa efforts.

I'm looking for 2-3 more dedicated helpers for the event, however would like those who might be interested - to spend a weekend or two up there with us to familiarise themselves.  Can also contact Dave, Murray or myself please ?

This is going to be another epic rally.
I have said it before - the off-road biking community has no idea how good they have it to have you in the mix.
Thank you for all the work and dedication!!

Hi Cracker, if you or a group would like to truck your bikes/kit (Logistics) we can arrange bike/kit storage in Calvinia or at Race HQ. I'm also happy to help load a transporter afterwards?   I know we all want to keep costs down.... however we can arrange a reliable plane charter from CPT direct to the venue (this would be cheapest with 3-6 passengers at a time). Aerosport CPT own the farm & airstrip 2km from Race HQ & if required, we also have another very good contact.
Tented camp & full meal packages also available (can make a plan for pre-arranged fuel too).

Me, but just to support and assist where necessary again this year, my racing is currently in limbo as my pension eaters are eating my race budget as well  :-\

This event is without doubt the highlight of my biking calendar, the whole vibe of the event is just something special. It's a full on race but it's got this totally relaxed chill about it in the pits where everyone is chatting and assisting each other where necessary.
It's well worth a long weekend out to the Tankwa just to support and watch the racers. Plenty viewing points and you literally need to take nothing with to eat or drink, the farmers supply a race canteen with the most amazing meals at very reasonable prices  :thumleft:

I'll hopefully have my swaer joining me from PE this year as he's become tired of hearing me rave about it and wants to see what it's all about  ;D

Good morning Clive, Dave and Fuzzzzy

By the looks of things this Rally is nice flat open 690 country. Is that correct? If not how technical is it? Keen to take the 950 for a spin. Want to still enter and get the early bird special.

Hi Rudi, if the route is anything like 2016 (and I'm sure it is), then most of it is awesome flowing track but there are some challenging bits. I found the tight sandy riverbed sections between the thorn trees particularly challenging on the 690. 1st too much and 2nd too little and course was tight. There's more distance to cover this year so hopefully most of that has been removed  ;D
The mountain section was also a bit of a challenge on the 690, it's got too much power for the rocks and kept spinning out but I managed everything with a bit of momentum  :thumleft:
With your skill set I'm sure you'll cope just fine on the big bike  :thumleft:

Clive will get to the rest soon, I think he was finalising track this weekend.

WOW, looks like amazing terrain!

Depending on your class, you will get to enjoy between 750 and 1000 km of it...racing.

Also, it is not lap riding, i.e. going round in a 40km loop 10 times in a row, it is proper riding.

It is so much more than an iconic race, even if you are not a "racer", it is still a ride/race that deserves a place on the bucket list.

Guys, I've just come back from a weekend in riding heaven!

We stayed at Rooiputs (Race HQ) and I helped Offroad and Buff map and check out the tracks. I spent my time following them in a Hilux bakkie (The Lexus) with the fuel, while they were out on quad and bike.enjoying the most varied, glorious riding conditions imaginable.

Get your hot little entries in now. The farmers have opened many, many areas where ordinary folk never get a chance to ride. Step away from your keyboards and do something quite extraordinary.

I penned some words to post on a few social media pages, I might as well share then here as well, along with a few photos from this weekends track setting.

4 hours beyond the confines of our city limits lies a dry & barren landscape littered with shale rock and koppies called the Tankwa Karoo. It’s a nirvana for adventure seekers and home to the now famous Africa Burn and it lures adventure riders to explore its wondrous tracks that snake their way towards endless horizons. Those that have spent time here in days gone by, are haunted by its allure and yearn to return to breath its fresh air and star filled nights.

It’s here that the Tankwa XC Rally calls home and it’s these very tracks and a multitude more that the racers of this iconic even will get to experience when they line up on the start line of this 3 day event on the 21st September. Now in its 4th year, this race continues to attract riders from all over South Africa to experience it’s incredible riding terrain, amazing pit camp vibe and true farm life food & hospitality.

All you need is a lust for adventure, a reliable dirt bike, a GPS and a racing license and you can be part of it in 2018.

Thanks for the pics, Buff.

Seriously, guys, there is nothing in this rally that is not entirely rideable by a halfway competent rider. Who cares where you come in the order? Just taking part is first prize!

Our children and grandchildren will hear of our exploits with rapt awe, even if they can't ride one.  ;)

Thanks Brett & John for your help - great pics Brett, and all the other  pics on this thread are real footage of the tracks. Happy that you and John could help and also orientate yourselves around the area. All being well Tankwa XC shows signs of an Iconic event going forward.

But you've got to ride it to really appreciate what an incredible setting this Rally has. Unfortunately it won't be possible to ride the route afterwards. The farmers will lock their gates again, and WCOC will take their fence-ramps and marker pegs away. So this is your only chance!

:thumleft: amazingly you'd probably be able to ride 60% of this race on a GSA, there's lots of open, following tracks but the soft river beds scattered with iron rocks would be its undoing.... Oh, and the mountain stage on day 3 will be very challenging on anything bigger than a 701  :ricky:

Not doable on a 950 then?

I am very tempted. Althought I would not get a race license as I have never raced before.
Officially, that is.

In the right hands, a 950 will be able to do it. It'll be a hell of a challenge for sure and the rider will need to be fit but there's nothing out there that's unrideable. I can think of a few WDs who have the skill set for it, @Kamanya  and @tour being 2 of them.

For interest sake you don't need to have raced previously to get a license. You can take out a WOW/One event license and race the Silver Class.

Ok, I am trying to tick off my bucket list, and you have to take big steps sometimes..

So the 950 is out, as I am too unfit to wrestle her through rocks and sand. I dont ride enough nowadays. A few year ago I could have.

So if I enter the off-road class (say on a 500), I only need a GPS? No roadbook?
Entry fee R3750?
Does that include camping/meals or what else? Sorry, I could not make it out from the WCOC website.

What is the Silver class?
Do I just get a One Event license, tell my medical aid, and come ride?

Sorry for all the questions. I am just trying to figure out if it's doable before I REALLY pull the trigger and start looking for a bike.
With money I dont yet have.......

Sorry, looking at the entry form now, I might have answered a few of my own questions

Camping is R200 extra.

And Silver Class is sort of a miniature version of the rally. 450km. Any bike. R2250 entry fee.

Am I right?

I assume there will be fuel to buy?
And food and stuff at the race village? I dont have to bring a lot except bike, gear, gps, camping stuff and money?

Sorry for sounding like an idiot. I have been riding bikes for 30 of my 41 years but have never done any sort of organised race. Completely out of my depth here.

If I take out a One Event license, may I only race Silver Class? Or  Off-Road bike Open class if I want to?

Camping is R200 extra. - R120 p/n if you bring your own tent

And Silver Class is sort of a miniature version of the rally. 450km. Any bike. R2250 entry fee.

Kom nou Kaboef maak n plan en kom ry saam.

So for the peeps sitting on the fence so to speak, just jump in. It s not about winning the race, That's probably between Donny and Ellis...  O0 For the rest of us its about having fun, riding on land thats usually off limits. Having a jol with friends, smelling petrol and engines every morning and nerves through the roof. Making new friends and seeing your riding buddies. Having a beer at night and having an eina body the next day....

I ll be on my 950 for this rally, because its a challenge thats all. and hoping to be in before sunset. the fast guys will be first and the rest of us are having fun and testing ourselves. So pull your finger out your ass and go to the gym a few times and just show up.

Hope to see you all there.
PS, Clive, Beserker and Buff thanks for the feedback here, really appreciated. And John, you re a bloody Legend

So bek kort jam  :thumleft: Lekka Rudi, going to be good to see you there on that 950 monster  :thumleft:

Guys, those photos are just a very small taste of what this race has to offer, I could literally be out there for days just taking photos. Between Sat/Sun past, we covered over 500's of track and never even touched the mountain section or river beds. The terrain is vastly varied and the flowers are spectacular at the moment as well. I'm hoping they'll still be in bloom at the end of Sept. There's one section of road where the farmer has bulldozed a new road up a valley that has never seen a vehicle before and on the opposite side of the valley you can see a cave where shepherds of years past have built pillars of rock shale at the entrance of the cave. These are things that only the property owners have ever seen. It's rather spectacular and we're privileged to be able to ride it. Sadly the front runners won't get to see this, they'll probably be too focused on the track in front of them but I'm hoping the back markers stop every once in a while and take in what this area has to offer  :thumleft:

Daai bike en Rossdog se 500 spook snags by my.

Ek is mos net so taai soos Tour.

Well you're slap bang in the middle of the Tankwa so yes, great riding all around but please bear in mind that no adventure riding can be done on the private property that the race is happening on as that will jeopardize it for the Rally going forward. There will however be spectator points you can ride out to each day to support the riders  :thumleft:

There is an inexhaustibe supply of amazing public roads to ride. Just keep an eye open for the Rallyists and you're good. And the Cederberg is to the west and Sutherland to the east.

But better yet, ENTER!

And you'll ride roads like you've only dreamt about.  Then you ride the public roads on the way home.  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

If you are still wondering - DO IT! ENTER!

Thanks for the pics, Buff.

Seriously, guys, there is nothing in this rally that is not entirely rideable by a halfway competent rider. Who cares where you come in the order? Just taking part is first prize!

Our children and grandchildren will hear of our exploits with rapt awe, even if they can't ride one.  ;)

Last year I was privileged to do some of the route checks for a day or two. I am a very average rider, but managed to ride most of the route (with a spill here and there and some serious sphincter moments!) by riding within my ability (i.e. slowly) and showing a bit of vasbyt. It was tough but AWESOME! Best riding of my life. It is totally do-able on a 450 (which is what I rode). As soon as I have a bike again, I'll enter at the drop of a hat.

Did I mention AWESOME! The amount of effort and passion that is going into this event is off the charts. You will get 10 times more out of it than you'll put into it (including entry fees) because of the immense efforts by Offroad2, his wife and other volunteers and friends.

Thanks for the Kind words Herman much appreciated, amazing team energy & help - this year it is the next level, get yourself a scoot !!!

So great to see some big names coming, I'm looking forward to seeing Ross Branch tear up the Tankwa, that oke is seriously fast... and let's not forget our own David Ellis that's going to be chasing him all the way.

I'm so excited for everyone going, and am quite jealous I won't be. Hopefully next year if there is another event.

BB entries are disappointingly slow as we have gone to extraordinary efforts - so many said they coming but so many excuses.
On the plus side some big names coming Donny, Kenny Gilbert, Ross Branch, David Ellis, Devan Marais  and watch out for this young Lady Taye Perry who can give many of the guys a proper run for their money. Taye is tiny and petite but throws that 450 around big time.

I was a bit too slow on this one.
But next year I am definitely there.

I bought a 500, and getting it on the weekend if all goes to plan. But one week prep is sadly not enough. I need to get in some saddle time before I can realistically enter a race of this magnitude.

You can indeed @Amsterdam and the 701 is the perfect weapon for the Tankwa Rally. I confirmed with Clive, it's eTrex or equivalent so as long as your GPS can read GPX files it will be fine  :thumleft:

Its a tough thing starting a rally in South Africa, with the economy down there is an additional factor. Also don't forget that Namaqua disaster that happened a couple of years back that did nothing good for rally in the country.

Staying power will make this rally a success and I think perhaps a lot of people will be looking to see how it goes and how it is run as the first year. With one successful rally under the belt, next year you will be able to attract more locals riders and international riders as well - I am sure.

Alexander built a great brand that grew quite nicely and now that there is a hole, you have the potential to fill it. All the best guys, and let us know who we can help. :thumleft:

A final suggestion from my side would be to allow some real time tracking for the followers and armchair racers. Not sure if its economically feasible and its obviously too late for thus year but something to consider perhaps going forward. These type of things generate big followings and great a lot of noise in social media.

Tankwa is going into its 3rd year now @BlueBull2007 and run by the WCOC who has presented numerous successful National Offroad events. It's not like the entrants are dealing with George Booker, this club knows how to organise a brilliant race and has spent countless hours building up great relationships with the local farmers. Even the food and lodging is taken care of by the local farmers.
Granted, 2016 wasn't a full blown Rally but 2017 was run with road books. it's disappointing to see the low entries in the rally class especially after we've laid these tracks and know just how awesome this terrain is for an event like this. It's a case of "you can take a horse to water..." and it's frustrating because it's not like there's a huge amount of rally events to chose from. Where else in the world can you race a 3 day event for R4000?

Really guys, you've got absolutely no idea what you're missing out on.

I spent a lot of money doing the 2014 Amageza but it was worth it. But I, like a lot of others, can't afford it anymore.

If I had the money, for the whole spend, I'd be doing the Tankwa. Looks the perfect fast off-road riding terrain to me, I know what I'm missing out on. ....

But I don't have the money anymore ..................... and I reckon this depressed economy is taking a lot of players out the game.

Maybe coz I'm poor but I reckon promoting the off-road with a GPS is the way to go here in SA.

But, next year ........ I have to do it. I just have to plan it now whereas in years gone by I would just sommer go, no problem.

I hear you @Cracker, there's a few of us in that boat right now but there's still a lot of guys that have the time & money that are missing out. The Kalahari Rally might be impacting the numbers as well, I know a few guys are rather saving their money for that event but as a  first time event, I think they'd be wiser racing Tankwa. Anyway, I can only speculate but I'll be bitterly disappointed if this race falls off the table next year due to time/cost/effort ratio and the racing community will lose something special. Setting up an event of this magnitude is hugely time consuming and expensive, especially when dealing with rally distances and the current cost of fuel... not to mention bakkie and trailer tires that the Tankwa eats for breakfast  :(
Let's just hope the Offroad guys racing on GPS's keep the flame burning  :thumleft:

Just some points from me.
People had a year to book this date, If Rally guys want this they need to support it.... so many said they will be there but one excuse after another, maybe it is too cheap @ 4.75K ???  If wanted we can do five days but not for a few Rally entries.

Off-road classes are ok - this offers more affordable racing, with two Tankwa races dusted, we learnt a lot and fine tuned, has been great & better this this year.

@ Cracker if average speed is over 55km then you are in the David Eliis cat. It is really a wide variety of terrain which most will enjoy.

Otherwise all good  & enjoy

Nah, seriously, for me it's a week off work and the whole spend that involves, the R4000k entry fee is the easy bit. Even if I'd entered this year, I would have had to pull out anyway. Being self-employed is a bugger when you take time off - it's a double hit.

I'm even looking at my 950, wondering if I'll ever be going on a proper trip again ...................  :'(

But I'm looking at next year in a different way, not just a race. If I'm away I might as well make it 10 days or so and turn it into a Tankwa race AND tour - I doubt I'll ever be going back that side of the country again.

I don't have the talent to be a race winner or a contender but I love racing anyway AND I wanna have an adventure while doing it.  :thumleft:

Good luck to all the WDs doing this year's Tankwa. Whatever happens you gotta report back - with some pics.

I've got a eTrex10 and I use a simple bicycle mount for it, available from Garmin (actually got mine from ActionGear online). @Crossed-up  came up with a brilliant pooratech solution that he might be willing to share.

Regarding the wiring... I simply wired in a cigarette lighter adapter straight to the battery with a fuse and used my normal GPS cable and duct-taped it into the port so it didn't jump out.

I used my GPS's car mount cable and it has a built in converter so you'll need to check for your own GPS. I don't think you can wire it in directly.

Mine ripped out when my "tower" cracked and collapsed - you can get a hard wire kit.

Looks like this:

I phoned all over Cape Town - no luck, and out of desperation and on a whim I phoned Flying Brick.

There website was down etc etc....but guess what, with the assistance of Werner, I managed to EFT and sort out collection and delivery in about 5 minutes flat - what a pleasure.

Guys are forum vendors, and ideally situated within walking distance of KTM, Yamaha etc.

Use the cable and 3V dc converter/cig lighter plug thing that comes with the GPS. Or buy one if you don't have.

I'll get you a Bells once down here.

Rooiputs is an ideal place for a jump off - I have tracks that will take you from there, past Loeriesfontein all the way to Pella and a proper Richtersveld meander, if so inclined, even some tracks just north of the Namibia border.

If you approach the Tankwa Rally as an adventure, it provides awesome opportunity on it's own, which is why I can't understand that some of the more adventurous dual sport guys don't ride it - it is priced far less than a regular rally, and on par with offroad "touring" companies - to me it is a no brainer.   :dontknow:

Keep an eye out on Sat, the rally will be coming past really close to Stonehenge. Silver Class will be ending at the Halfway House pub  :thumleft: As far as I know the spectator guide isn't available online.

:dontknow:

I don't race and therefor hardly looked at this.  By the time I woke up and found out I could just enter and use my current bike with GPS it was too late as we had already organised a Cederberg ride for this weekend.  I will try be more awake in the future as riding unknown tracks is nice.

Don't know if it is feasible to run the same routes as for the silver class as an Adventure Rallye in a few months?  This could be an opportunity to recoup some of the costs and effort that has gone into organising this event.

Some photos from the start this morning.

David Ellis was first in his class, and I think it was Kenny Gilbert 1st in the rally class.

Not sure what happened today.

So let me add to this.
Buff stirred the pot with me and asked why my son (junior) is not racing. I sent him a whatsapp, telling him that junior is writing exams. He called me all kind of names.... just not appropriate for here. So I sent junior a whatsapp asking what would he be writing on the Friday, his reply was, only has to hand in his mechanical project, in which he also said, he wants to do it on Thursday. Mmmmmm thats gets me thinking. So long story short, everyting was arranged via Nigeria on whatsapp. Junior would entre silver class and Buff would keep an eye on him......which I am not sure happened, as I saw some pictures with some sort of beverages in hand.
Well Junior drove up on Thursday afternoon after school. As everyone, Buff and other riding friends would have left early in the morning. Droomers race team taking up Juniors bike as well.
Thursday evening it was mounting the Gps. and checking the bike and I dont know what els.....
Friday morning I got messaged, all is well and he is off and talk later.
Afternoon got message. Did not do to good. Got lost as Gps did not work and tyre came off.
He said, he made a plan. Sent me pictures. Used a bunch of tie-raps to secure the tyre to rim.
Friday evening he managed to talk to Buff very late as Buff was out all day and almost all evening, to get the Gps fixed as everyone told him, its the unit that and will not work???
Buff sorted him out.  :thumleft:
Saterday he started last due to the time trials. Sent me a message, he will be leaving soon.
Saterday at about 12pm. Get whatsapp. Went well! A few offs. But Gps worked.  :thumleft:
Later Saterday, get picture of results. Third place. Man o man! He must have been flying! I was so excited on his behalf.
Sunday get updated before he leaves, all good and ready to go. Body a bit battered and bruised, but ok.
So I wait and wait...... around 12.30 get message. Back safe and all ok! With some more offs! Mmm this guy seems to have more offs than onns??
Later on get results from Buff, came in second!
Well, I was over the moon!! And proud!
Later on Sunday with prize giving and after total score of the weekend, Junior got Third place. For his first time Gps race. Think he is hooked and gonna cost me more moela!!

People pay a lot more to install in their kids the type of grid, determination and innovation that a race like the Tankwa requires and teaches you along the way.

Awesome result Renier, looking at you on the track, and the way you managed your race, no reason that you would not have done well in the golden glass either.

Deon - you can be proud Renier rode with maturity - I was worried about letting high school class start a race like this however these young guys have grown up in our off-road series. Well done!

Guys are forum vendors, and ideally situated within walking distance of KTM, Yamaha etc.

Apologies for that, you tried at the exact time we swapped over to a NEW website, which is now e-commerce, and gives postal/shipping rates, etc - the techies loading the new website (and taking old website down) said it would take TWO hours, and it took....TWENTY FOUR hours!  :-[
But new site is up and running: www.flyingbrick.co.za - sorry for the brief inconvenience, and stoked we could assist you with your Garmin cables!

Congrats boet, like Clive said, you can indeed be proud, he rode well and used his head to use cable ties when his tire climbed off the rim, it's that kind of tenacity required to finish these marathon type events  :thumleft:

To Clive ( @Offroad2 ) and his Team, congrats on another great Tankwa XC Rally. It wasn't without its fair share of challenges, especially with the Rally Class distances but overall it was a huge success once again  :thumleft:

And to the farmers of the area... what more can a man say, you guys are simply cut from a different cloth, thank you, thank you, thank you for allowing us to race in your very large back yard, treating us as good friends and spoiling us with the most amazing Karoo lamb :thumleft: @Mof , Cornie, Braam, Koos etc.  :thumleft:

Hi Dave, thanks for the kind words. I must confess. Renier started off with quads and moved later to two wheel. Got him a 85 which he mastered and jumped straight onto a KTM 200. We are privileged to have quite a few good bikers as friends who has given a lot of assistance and guidance while I have been away working. Buff seems to have fallen off the train as his guidance is the hard stuff on ice :imaposer: (Only joking Buff)
In all, Renier is a quick learner. I was also a bit impressed with the tie-rap move........there I must have done something right

So I am sure if Renier is still in SA next year, he would do Gold class :ricky:

Unfortunately the terrain will not allow SXS and bigger - requested by landowners & I agree. Only while quad numbers stay low will they too be allowed.  Would have been fun if possible.

Wow Tankwa 2018 - what a ride!

Congratulations Clive and team, you guys put together a great event. Many thanks to all the sweepers/marshalls, Crossed Up, Beserker and Buff (thanks for the help with the flat tyre) - you guys are champions. Was great to see old friends, as well as meeting some great people.

People you have to see it to believe it - some of the harshest, most beautiful terrain to ride your dirt bike on. A special thanks to all the farmers giving us access to this land, julle is werklik merkwaardige mense  :thumleft:

I promised myself to take pictures as we go along, but somehow I always find myself 30mins behind schedule. Thanks Rudi Tour for sharing all of day 1 and most of day 2 as well, the man is a beast on that 950!!

I can just say thank you, thank you, thank you. I really hope this event (and especially rally class) continues to grow for the future.

Cheers

But at least it gives me time to start twisting arms ........  :thumleft:

From a logistics point of view, is it easy enough for 2 (or more) of us to come down and do the off-road race without any pit crew or support?

Just arrive, race, party and leave?

Big ADV bikes would be a real handful in some places although the technical sections are not that long.
We did have a big bore class aimed at 640, 650, 690 & 701 but sadly not supported - not sure why because it is rideable  on those bikes and time bars were generous? Having said this Rudi entered Rally class on his big 950 and finished well (1200km and they rode with plastics days 2 & 3).
