@chopper pilot  arranged for a bunch of us to visit Gerrit Du Toit in Tzaneen for a long weekend of riding some of the amazing routes in the area. Gerrit is the owner of Oppie Oewer and offers fantastic accommodation and guided tours of the areas surrounding Tzaneen. Oppie Oewer is situated on the edge of the Letaba River.

Loading @chopperpilot 's and Johan's bikes in Nelspruit. My new-to-me Husky 501 would be arriving in Tzaneen with @Dwerg and @MonkeyNot that evening

We left Nelspruit just after 2pm and encountered heavy rain on the other side of Strydom Tunnel. Rivers of water next to the road. This did not bode well for our first ride the next morning.

Saturday was our first day of riding and it started off with a stretch of tar to Die Eiland where we put fuel in the bikes and bought a few snacks for the trip which would see us hugging the KNP fence for a while.

I wasn’t too keen on going down into this river at first. It was still early in the morning and we were up until AM hours drinking tea and discussing knitting. Rivers became a theme for the trip though and soon staying out of them wouldn’t be an option

Soon we had first challenge of the day in front of us. Kamlilibone river....... The usually bone dry riverbed was now a 100m wide raging  river. Gerrit crossed first on the 990, followed by myself on the Husky 501. Next up was Andreas on the Suzuki, which promptly stalled slap bang in the middle of the river.

@chopperpilot 's Husky 610 has a very low air intake, so he decided to rather pull it through.

Thanks for starting the RR Noneking! ;)

Gerrit du Toit, our guide, was born in Tzaneen, knows the area, and knows the owners of many a prohibited area!

Staying at his Oppie Oewer Chalets means a base where daily loops are done from. Bikes are therefore lightly packed. :thumleft:

Our daily routes were in excess of 200kms, so a long day in the saddle! :o

Gerrit carries tools for various bikes and is knowledgeable on the mechanical side.  ;)

Routes vary from scenic pillion friendly, to extreme adventure routes. (No hard core enduro though! :'()

We had a tough, but fun time riding with our Nelspruit buddies, with Nonekings "notorious" brothers joining in! :o

The 501 is hugely capable and so easy to ride. Oodles of power and many an unexpected power wheelie this weekend.  :ricky: :ricky:
Don't think I would've enjoyed the 701 as much as the 501 for this specific trip. The 501's seat was a killer though and my behind will need a few days to recover

701 goes to JHB for repairs this week.

Lots of fun was had by all in the thick sand.

Day 1 in Limpopo turned out to be an awesome one. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the ride and it was fantastic to share all of this with both my brothers. A delicious meal awaited us at Oppie Oewer and our tired bodies enjoyed a few healthy drinks before heading off to bed. How could life possibly get any better? Well, I know I'm not alone when I say that the next day's riding was possibly my most memorable day ever on a motorbike.

After an early breakfast at Oppie Oewer, we headed out to Ofcalaco to fill up on fuel before we headed to Lekgalameetse. Andreas was kind enough to bring his KTM 300 along for @MonkeyNot to use as the 1200 GS would not be suitable for today's route. The first 60km was on tar, but the beautiful surroundings made up for that.

Start of the rocky descent of Orrie Baragwanath. From here things got interesting
Title: Re: Limpopo makes me moist.
Post by: Noneking on March 21, 2018, 05:29:01 am
I’ve been wanting to to ride Orrie for quite some time and was slightly disappointed when I realised we would be going down the rocky part and not up. Going up will be more challenging on those rocks, but I think the 501 would’ve handled it well.

Arriving at the bottom of the pass I thought that that was the challenging part of the day behind us. Boy, was I wrong..........

I see your crew doesn't exactly rush out to the middle of the river to help the drowning 990! Just like my "mates". Looks like a blast though, and it's putting me in the right mood for my upcoming Easter ride in N. Tanzania where the rain has been endless for two weeks. Rivers of inspiration here indeed!

All very capable riders. We tend to make very sure the rider can’t suffer through on his own.....

The 990’s second drowning in as many days.  The rocks in the river were super slippery and even made walking over them impossible.

Due to the technical nature of the route, we ended up taking just a few photos, but MonkeyNot will post some action camera footage from my helmet.

The route changed constantly. One moment we would be riding on a bed of rocks and the next you would be under the canopy of a tropical forest, only to open up into an open area with no sign of a track.

Would’ve been tough!
Even the 990 struggled a bit on our trip.
The climb out of the valley probably toughest part with a big bike. Plenty switch backs and extremely rocky and rutted

The climb out of the valley was hectic. Very rocky and lots of switch backs. I was at the back with Dwerg and could hear the 990 screaming to get up that pass. I didn't stop to take pics on the way up, but @MonkeyNot has some footage on the Virb that may show me buying a piece of land on that pass......
