Title: Royal Hotel
Post by: Extreme Velcro on September 23, 2008, 05:38:43 pm
I wonder (and this could become a coffee table book, if it hasn't been done already)....

We all know that many little towns in South Africa have a Royal Hotel as made famous by David Kramer - how many of us have pics of us or our bikes or anybody else's bike outside a Royal Hotel?  I'd love to see them.....

Hier sit die manne in die Royal Hotel
Ek ken mos vir almal, ek is almal se pel.

Nou stel ek voor my ou vriend Fanie

hy drink sy whiskey so on the rocks

hier langs die till, sit 'n man so stil

Maybe if the Dogs would donate the pics, we could make it a book for charity.  I know a printer (in fact, I think he is my brother....)  ;) ;)

Edit:  And of course, somebody had to start it with a fabuloso pic that is hard to top.  Flipping good one BMWPE :hello2:

I wonder how many Royal Hotels there are out there?  I need to do some homework on this

I used to be a booze rep and don't recall those two towns having hotels called the Royal. Paterson was called the Paterson Hotel and Cookhouse didn't have a functioning hotel.  Nearest hotel to Cookhouse was the Golden Valley Hotel then the one at Middleton.

I think there was a Royal Hotel in Somerset East tho. Go find out for us.

Ladies and Gents

You will all be roaming around the country freely over the next 6 weeks or so - I'm hoping that all of you will remember to take those Royal Hotel pics.

When I mentioned that we were going to make a coffee book for a good cause, it was meant turthfully, but unless I have at least 100 pics or so, I can't get it done..?

Help, mense, help !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks EV. I tried to fit in the building's whole front view but the street was very narrow with a 6ft. fence behind me, so I couldn't back up more.

Hey GG, right outside the front door of the royal hotel in ladysmith, is a brass plaque embedded in the side walk that say someone or other was killed in a knife fight on that spot in the early 1900s, can you remember who it was if you saw the plaque?

Ok after a bit of googling....

and through the 118 day siege of Ladysmith, the ROYAL HOTEL stayed 'open for business'.
Some of the famous personalities who have stayed at the Royal Hotel are Frank Rhodes, Leander Starr Jamieson, Melton Prior,
and Dr. Stark who was fatally wounded by a Long Tom shell while standing in the Hotel doorway.

investigate the pavement in front of the hotel. A shell embedded in the paving and a brass plaque commemorates a victim of the siege who was killed at that spot.
