Welcome to the forum & Bloody excellent Stuart!! :hello2:

You clearly know how to ride a bike as well, which will be a big help. How is your training going? 6-800km/day for 13 days is a lot different to a couple of extreme events, so I would imagine you are focusing on that.

Please shout if you need any help; there are a few good road books about if you look in the other threads in this racing section.

I know Peru very well so if you like ping me a private msg and I would be happy to give you a call to discuss some local context, the in's and out's, hotels whatever. :deal:

All the best with your training and be careful not to get injured between now and the EOY. :ricky:

Hey guys

So where to begin .....

Being  an avid racer and huge Dakar groupie. Knowing In the back of my mind I always  would eventually do Dakar. But always say next year........next year.........next year....
But a email late November 2017 got the ball rolling.
It was an invite from ASO to come join scuitenering and the first few days of Dakar in the bivouac.
So after some quick phone calls and begging on my knees my wife. Tickets where booked (at a price that I still battle to believe ,I could have bought a small country)
So January 1st this year I got on a plane to start a trip that begun as a child. Finally going to see DAKAR first hand
After a day of delayed flights , I eventually arrived in Lima.
Joining Kenny Gilbert, Ross Branch and Werner Kennedy

Evening Girls and Gents

Itís a rainy day here in KZN , and Iím up early in the morning to ride.

Part of getting Dakar is you need to qualify, I probably would have qualified with the Amageza (which was 2014, not 2013 as I thought).
But didnít want to take a chance , I also wanted more experience.
So headed off to Morroco for Merzouga Rally.

Itís run by the Dakar ASO, so you get a discount on your Dakar entry if you enter,

Myself, Kenny, Ryan Bland and Shane Nell all went with a package from Bart - BSA RACING

And got to meet our bikes
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180907/71c1ce63c512ed72c90b99b2f1ef187d.jpg)

Better than expected considered all the pro teams were there

Been training hard, and shuffling some plans to be at Tankwa in 2 weeks.
Donny is being a champ and helping take me and my bike from Cape Town (courier my bike there)

Also trying to get to Namibia for sand practice, itís a tough year.
You have to juggle work, training ,family and fund raising.
But really excited to have the opportunity

ďThe hardest part of Dakar,  is getting to DakarĒ
Joey Evans has told us

Fantastic, Stuart!!! You'll be part of a load of SAns who have distinguished themselves in this epic race. But don't let all that bother you too much - just get in the moment and enjoy every second. It is a dream many millions would love to live! At least we'll get a chance to share the ride with you.  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Sorry I been quite for a while.
Itís really intense training/working/family time.

It feels like I live in a train station and a different train leaves every 10 minutes

So Tankwa was a good training event.
Donny really helped us , and Kenny and I  flew down to Cape Town
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180927/71ee857b677322ec8d47eebe31b50a62.jpg)
We were quickly on the road.
Donny gave me the tour of Calvinia and got to see the famous post box
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180927/ab54b8b5e362e2d7fc50abe88a1ff5c4.jpg)
I had the full Moto Malle experience thanks to Donny
With the exact tent and sleeping mattress Iíll use

A quick team photo before we left

A bad selfie before we start the first stage after 140km liaison

Unfortunately I didnít take enough photos
The day went ok, the roadbook missed some detail and missed a few turns, but a good learning curve how to keep claim when completely lost

I ended up 2nd Rally bike on the last day, and 3rd overall in Rally.
Pretty happy with that as I was only a proper Rally bike that is 145kg without fuel.
Tough competing against 500ís with bolt on roadbook.

Well done to Clive and his team for the huge effort they put in.
Thanks to Donny, Shane Nell (we bummed lots of stuff from his camp) and eddy2race (really great help in the pits)

Sorry itís been so long since last update .
Had some serious issue with technology and data (50 gigs disappeared in 3 days )

I also had a 2 week business trip to China , so to say the least itís been crazy .

Really feel like Iím running out of time , 54 days till race day .

So some really great news , a brand new spec bike has become available to rent .
Really happy about it
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181113/1a92b35b8b083089c90d130ae4e37384.jpg)
Kenny went to visit her

Getting serious race prep .
Bartís team does a epic job at race prep .
Over 40 Labour hrs per bike , incredible attention to details , which will give me peace of mind in Originals by Motul .

Stopped by in JHB to meet with potential sponsors, and some great news come later this week .
I also got to spend time with Joey Evans and Lyndon Poskit
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181113/ab4e9857f129543f641a644ea0b1a422.jpg)
And meet Basil of coarse
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181113/0888f1a4d2d5b9ad1db8ff80c8455b08.jpg)

After that I  ended up doing a last minute trip to Namibia with Ross Branch last week .
Got to try the new bike , and practice more in the dunes
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181113/d4f8ae4ae51bc680f57279fef08f5d79.jpg)

Than the great news , race numbers came out for Dakar .
Itís so crazy real , Iíve always want this but it almost feels unreal Iíll be racing Dakar .
A life long dream
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181113/80ac8ea61ab1f5f718c211a1ffa55092.jpg)

Really cool number
And still have space for a title sponsor , so donít miss out on an awesome opportunity.

So the next few weeks , Iíll be training for my 13th Roof of Africa
Than Silver Roof , race no 125

Than more training and I fly out to Dakar 2019

Crazy

NOMAD BIKE BAGS is happy to sponsor any bags or luggage you may require for Dakar.
Thinking particularly of bags with tools / kit that might be on the vehicles.

We can do custom bags if needed and can brand with your name, sponsor logo, etc.

Give me a shout we can help.

Been another crazy few weeks
Training hard and did my 12th Roof of Africa

Had a bad time trail and got lost early on , pushed hard to make up time but that made it worse and ended up getting lost of few times.
Was 27th silver after time trail.

The next day I was on a mission and worked up to 10th silver at halfway.
I used lots of energy to get there and held position

Last day I had a great trail ride in the mountains with Alex Vowles, and after some fan issues (it stopped working on the pass)
I finished 10th silver , happy with that and glad to be back safe

Iíve also been lucky to be assisted by MOTUL.

MOTUL sponsor the Original by MOTUL (old MALLE MOTO)
Iím a power sport ambassador for MOTUL , and fantastic to test the products before I use them at Dakar .

Fox racing South Africa , have also been great sponsoring kit for Dakar .
The legion kit is perfect for enduro racing , and Iím super impressed with the rally jacket

I know you are a Roof vet but surely it was a big calculated risk to partake this year so close to Dakar? I know there are some Dakar riders that barley ride for a month before the race ... that said Toby broke his wrist a week or so back  :o .

Best of luck  :thumleft: :ricky: :ricky: :ricky: :ricky:

Howzit

Yes it was a risk , i choose silver and didnt take any chances (walking down lots of things i normally would ride)
But im keeping on the bike until i fly, i want to keep fit and fresh .(have a 2 day 800km Transkie trip im starting tommorrow)
I like to keep my mind and body busy (probably have adult ADH)

Im running a Fox legion jacket, i plan to mainly ride with sleeves off (enduro style)
Thats the main reason i got riding shirts, i would really like to ride only shirt when it is super  hot (you have body amour and undervest on aswell, i really dont ;like riding with a jacket)

These days even some of the top Bronze riders are not weekend warriors anymore. They are sponsored riders and some even home school to focus on racing etc.
So competition is very tough. 10th in Silver is a tremendous achievement.

You should be fine, the weather is not critically hot in Peru like you see in the dust bowls of Argentina, thanks to the effect of the cold ocean current.

Very Sad news, but a big congrats anyways.

If it wasn't for the breakdown it would've been an easy (relatively) finish for you.

Was it the fesh fesh that killed the engine?

Woorde kan nie beskryf wat jy achiev het nie.

Uit die bloute besluit om deel te neem en dan gaan jy straight vir die moeilikste kategorie.

Awesome job!!
