Title: 690 Service
Post by: adamktm on September 07, 2018, 01:30:57 pm
What oil are you guys using? Motul 7100 is R90 cheaper than Motorex. I used Motul in my 250 Tpi

Will only use OEM filters though on the 690.

Service intervals 10000km?

I ride my 690 off-road and in dusty condition so I service it every 3000-5000, foam air filter with air box bracket, oil filters etc.. I use motorex 10W60.

Thanks bud, the Motul oil is also 10W60 Fully Synthetic.

Air box bracket? Is that to help the original airbags seal?

Is it worth upgrading the rockers to the post 2015 model ones?

I can't find it right now but there is thread here of someone who was making a bracket that goes around the edge of the air box cover. It's works very well!

I have done my rocker arms at 20,000km. I reckon it is worth it as a failure would be way worse that the few bucks in relation now to replace them. What year model is your bike?

Motul. 15W60 offroad 300V
Is the correct oil for use on the 690.
A bit more expensive compared to the Motorex

What makes you say that? As far as I remember my manual states 10W60. 15W60 would probably work just as well and possibly suit our 'African' conditions better but not exactly 'the correct oil'.

I was watching an episode from PirateTV on YouTube, and what they were saying made a lot of sense.

I've since switched over to Motul, and I'm very happy. Oil consumption is gone, and I like the sound of the engine a lot more now.  :thumleft:
I've had to topup with oil every 2500km with Motorex!

Could you please try and find the thread. Iíve searched but nothing comes up. Iíve read a lot about the standard air box leaking so Iíd like to do the mod asap

Bite the bullet and put a Rally Raid foam filter in and your problems with dust are over :thumleft:

Rocker arms at 20000kms for preventative maintenance... That's according to Lyndon Poskitt.

Iím worried about it sounding like a corsa lite with a drilled airbox :imaposer:

I use the standard paper air filter element, which I silicone seal into the aircleaner housing.

Lots of mileage on 690's and 701, and zero dust in airbox.

How often do you replace the filter? Do you coat the air box with silicone spray before siliconing the filter in or does it come out easier enough when replacing the filter.

Same here...I actually put Grease/Vaseline around it. Clean as a whistle inside.
I use 10w60 Motorex as per manual.
Will also do the rocker arms at 20 000km

I will keep the standard filter and grease/silicone the lip. After having a closer look Iím also going to put 2 of the KTM plastic screws through the lip of the lid in the centre to pull the lid and airbox closer together. I will take pics if it works.

I have bought oem filters and will be using 10w60 as per the manual.

Iím going to peen my rocker like in the vid in this thread http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=211185.0
and replace at 20k

I think if you have a post 2015 or so 690 those rockers are already pre-peened in a KTM way.  Thats why people say before putting the rockers in make sure the stamp on it says '15. One doesnt know what you get. Some people even got new ones that was pre '15 manufactured and thus the old setup. Luck of the draw. hopefully by now all the old ones are used :D
Thats the general advice from ADV rider "690 Wunderfest" anyway.

Bought some stainless cap screws. I will post pics of my modded air box. Hopefully it solves the dust getting in. If not I will fit the unifilter kit I think or the rally raid one which will free a lot of space under the seat for stuff
