Title: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 30, 2018, 03:26:01 pm
OK, it was time for a bit of adventure.

My wife was visiting our daughter and I was free for a weekend, so I asked for leave on Friday and Monday to make my own long weekend ....

All approvals were obtained and I asked a few friends to join me but none could make it.

Eisbein did make an effort to join me for days 3 and 4.

So below the Map for day1

After my initial planning, I realised that it was the 1150 Bash and so I decided to join them on the first evening .....

This also made me decided to ride on old trusty ...... a little more about him later ...

After a leisurely ride to Ceres over Bainskloof and a fill up at the Wimpy, I continued to the Tankwa padstal for a quick cool drink ....

After Tankwa padstal, I turned east and got to a T junction where we always turn right towards Verlatenkloof.

But I wanted to go up Oubergpas, so I decided to go left .....

Unexpectedly hit a mud patch in the middle of the Tankwa Karoo ...

And got lost until I asked directions from a friendly farmer and eventually (after  some gates) found the route to the bottom of the Ouberg pass

Check the sign on the gate ....!!

Now I lost some time with the detour and I had about 600kms to do, so I was pushing a bit towards to bottom of Oubergpas and did not see the first erosion bump ......

I must have hit it at 120km, luckily standing but we landed so hard that I nearly ripped off the mudguard ....

With my heart pumping I ascended and reached the top without any more scares ....

Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 30, 2018, 03:47:59 pm
I trundled on into Sutherland to fill up and......

There is a new filling station !!!!

And a whole bunch of new Honda ATs filling up ......  I bumped into the Quest guys.

Kamanya was nice enough to give me a spin on his DCT, but I did not have enough time for the computer course to ride the thing properly .....

Anyway, when Honda makes this bike with a driveshaft, I might become interested.

After filling myself at Jupiters, I hit the road towards Merweville .....

Again there were the gates, but made it to Merweville where I filled up just in case ....

Then it was down to the N1, left a few kms towards Leeu Gamka and eventually I made it ti the 1150 bash venue at Abrhamskraal

I got a cold one and we chatted while the sun set as magnificently as it always does on the Karoo

....some of us tried to sleep in the "Old School" , but the heat chased most outside on their mattresses .....

Since it was the 1150 bash I thought the "Old School"-pun hilarious

The next morning we lined up the old timers for a few pics .... there were 21 of them with Brian's bike at the far end with a sidecar

the Red bike, second in line, belongs to Andre (79) from Pretoria and has 340,000 km on the clock ......never opened the engine ....

Plan for day 2 was to go down via Swartbergpass, De Rust, Uniondale, and then towards Knysna via the Prind Alfred pass

I tried to enjoy the incredible sights along the way up the pass  ....

I stopped near the top to look down and saw a bunch of lights coming up the pass ....

So I waited to see who this was, turned out about 6x brand spanking new 1290 KTMs, (no number plates) and a little bus as support .... :-\

After a few greetings I was on my way again.
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures

After the Swartbergpass, I eventually turned left on the Kamanasie road pass the Raubenheimer dam.

Closer to De Rust, the road becomes quite narrow and twisty .....

Coming around a left turn with the mountain on my left, I suddenly see some kids on the left in the corner ..... :o
I just manage to swerve towards the right to miss them, when a large planter/harvester kind of thing appears in front of me .... :o :o :o

I swerved back towards the left, braked and slid until the bike eventually got traction and we missed the corner of the contraption by inches ...
I remember the large eyes and open mouth of the driver who also jammed on the brakes ....

As I sped past him I could just shout "SORRY !!!" ......
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 30, 2018, 04:29:19 pm
After a brekkie at De Rust to calm my nerves, I took the tar road towards Uniondale.

I was surprised by all the flowers that was still along the route ...
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 30, 2018, 04:31:24 pm
After Uniondale, I started to descend down the Prince Alfred pass ....

This was a first for me on this road .....

Quite a few little bridges along the routes as you wind down the kloof ....
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 30, 2018, 04:38:33 pm
And so I eventually stumbled upon the infamous Angie's G Spot , "For warm beer and awful food"

After a nice cold coke, it was on the road again ...

Angie's is along the river ....

And eventually I started to descend into the Knysna forests ....

I really love this riding under a canopy of branches ...

And ended up at the Knysna Waterfront for lunch ...

Just to complete day 2,

After Lunch in Knysna I turned right onto the Seven Passes route, Phantom Forest road and drove through the Phantom pass and the Homtini pass before descending down towards Sedgefield were I met Eisbein.

Eisbein organised accommodation for us with family.

While on the Seven Passes route on Saturday, I saw the smoke from the fires around George.

It did not look good and we saw the effects the next day...... :-[

OK, so day 3 would complete the Seven Passes route, include the Montagu Pass which I have never done and then a route parallel to the R62 towards Calitzdorp ...... :deal:

From Caliitzdorp we would go towards Vanwyksdorp over the Rooiberg pass and on to Warmwaterberg for the night

We filled up, and luckily Montagu pass was still open when go got to the turnoff ......

Halfway up the pass we saw the fires first hand .....

The cool temperature also changed to an unbearable heat ..... it was like riding into an oven   :'(

We eventually got to the N9 towards Oudshoorn and took the first gravel road to the left to do our "old R62" route ....

Somewhere we missed a turnoff and ended up back on the N9 .....

.... not to worry, we just took the next gravel road to the left and ended up at the R328 from Mosselbay .... all well to this point ....

BUT HERE WE TURNED LEFT on the R328  (instead of right) and eventually right onto the next gravel road which took us south of the Gamkaberg Nature reserve .....

We thought that we were North of the Reserve on our way to Calitzdorp .....

And the temperature rose to an unbelievable 46 degrees  .....  I have never experienced such heat..... :dousing:

Luckily my son palmed a hydrapack onto me just before this trip and so for the first time ever I had this luxury to keep me hydrated ......
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 31, 2018, 09:43:22 am
The road deteriorated to a mere 2 spoor with very little use and many gates to open and close in the heat ....

And eventually we arrived on the South side of the Rooiberg pass ....
Title: Re: Getting lost in 46 degrees heat and other adventures
Post by: MellowJo on October 31, 2018, 09:46:12 am
We just put our heads down, tackled Rooiberg pass and then descended into Calitzdorp looking for the first open establishment for lunch and to escape to blazing heat .....

We ordered 2 cooldrinks each and some ice for our hydrapacks .....

Also somewhere along this warm day my steed hit another landmark !!!!

Day 4 would be a simple dash back to the Mother city, but it started off on the wrong foot.

The guards at Sanbona informed us that the escort would take 45mins to an hour to get to the gate where we wanted to cross to do the Oubergpass into Montagu .....

This forced us to go back onto the R62, but at least it forced us to stop at Diesel & Creme ......

So we spoiled ourselves with milkshakes at 9 in the morning after our breakfasts  :imaposer:

I took almost no photos, but here are a couple:

The 1st one was on the last bridge on the 7 passes road, direction George
The 2nd is where the fire started creeping over the edge in Montagu pass. Here the wind was still quiet and we hoped it stayed that way. Unfortunately it didn't   :'(
The 3rd photo is at the spot at Montagu pass where you have to stop and take a photo (it's just how things work)
The 4th photo is between Barrydale and Montagu.
We were a bit 'miffed' that we couldn't do Ouberg Pass, but it didn't last long as the fact was that it was still a Monday morning and we weren't in the office.
(and a bad day on the bike still beats a good day at the office)

Thanks for letting me in on this ride, MJ
It was a pleasure riding with you.

'Till next time

Darem net een keer gevoel daar is 'n boerebrekfis oppad though...

:)

Great ride (en rapport) MJ.
