Title: 2018 Zinyala Rebelz Trip 19-21 Oct
Post by: MonkeyNot on November 06, 2018, 01:46:18 pm
Below is a short ride report of the Rebelz annual Zinyala trip.
For the guys that were there, please feel free to add your pics and experiences of the weekend

About a week before the trip @Orangeswifty  sent us the planned route. It looked awesome to say the least and I was getting very excited.
I set of on my 990 early Friday morning, riding as much gravel as possible from PTA-East to Cullinan. Everyone that was doing the trip to Zinyala on gravel met up at the Shell garage at 9am. It looked like a KTM cult gathering (more specifically a 950 SE gathering) with the odd BMW or 2. This was followed by the usual brand banter. Bets were made on which bike would run into problems first and would have to face the embarrassing prospect of having to be collected by the backup vehicle.
Whilst getting to meet all the new faces I was informed that on every previous trip the person driving in front of @Smokes  had a bad fall, I am not superstitious but these odds were hard to ignore.

With great excitement and very loud V-Twin engines we started heading north. As we reached the first village after a short gravel section Johan gets a problem on his 950 SE, he has lost the gear lever bolt. Luckily someone was carrying some spare bolts and he is able to get it sorted without further hassles. During this time Bender parked his SE by a large tree next to the road, his side stand sunk into the wet soil and his bike fell down. We then realized this is the local toilet-tree… explaining the wet soil…
We were all happy to get back onto the road as we still had a long way to go.
I regret not having my helmet cam with me on this day as the route consisted of some great 2-spoor routes. The first part being the “Loodswaai Pad” heading towards Renosterkop dam. This was mostly hard pack twisty 2 spoor with some awesome jumps. We stopped before the tar road to regroup and take some pictures

Luckily there was only 1 puncture on the entire trip, we still believe it was self inflicted. Frank did have one small incident. More on that later.

The second part was a long sandy section next to the Nylsvlei Nature Reserve. Here you could really start to feel the dry bushveld heat and I was looking forward to lunch and a cold beer.
Johan was leading on the Nylsvlei road with myself and the rest following, we were at an area where the road was getting twisty and rather sandy. I was having a lot of fun and then out of nowhere came the fallen tree that laid across the road, there was an escape route to the right but I was far to the left and did not manage to get across in time. I hit the tree head on after some heavy breaking in the sand, by some miracle the momentum popped me and the 990 right over and I managed to ride off unscathed. With each bike breaking heavily in the thick sand before the tree it became increasingly difficult for the last riders to manage the deep ruts. Hercules was at the back of the pack and first to have a fall on his 1200 GSA, luckily the sand broke his fall and perhaps some smaller items on his GSA  :peepwall:
Not long after we reached Naboom, it is here where the single men were promised that they will wine and dine in the company of lovely ladies at a place called “Sasha’s”. They were terribly disappointed to find out that there were only men working at the establishment.
Its here where we also got to meet up with our backup vehicle drivers - @bud500 and @dookie
I recall @Hondsekierie  stating that Sasha's have the best pizza that money could buy and I couldn’t agree more as I stuffed my face to a point where I considered loading my bike on the backup vehicle and laying in the back seat of bud's bakkie for the rest remainder of the road to Zinyala.

After lunch we took the scenic route from Naboom past the Bateleur nature reserve  to Zinyala.
When we arrived at Zinyala I thought the days riding was done, @Orangeswifty informed me of the mountain climb and decent that we had to do in order to reach the bush-camp.

More on that as well as the 500km Saturday trip with videos tomorrow.

Unfortunately I don’t have any pics of the hill climb and decent from our trip, I stole some pics from a previous trip.
It is a rather steep, chamfered uphill with many loose rocks
I remember going up, trying my best to stand but the 990 was flung around on the loose rocks and I soon found my feet dangling frantically next to the bike. Luckily I managed to keep my momentum up and reach the top in one piece. On this trip the hill climb did not claim any victims but the stories were enough to make me nervous, even more so on the way down the next morning.

When we reached camp we could not get rid of our bike gear fast enough and climb into the little rock pool.
Whilst waiting for the backup vehicle to reach camp we shared 2 very warm Hunter's that was still in my backpack.

Once the backup vehicle arrived we enjoyed a cold beer whilst sharing stories of bike trips and worked on our tan.

Friday night we all had a great time socializing around the campfire with no cellphone signal or electricity.
The paraffin lanterns provided just the right atmosphere.

@bud500 flamed grilled us the perfect rump steak and nearly killed a few guys that tried to mess (read "assist") with his fire.
@Bender or rather his alter ego Speswillie ensured that our stomachs hurt from all the laughing.

We each received an engraved knife as a memento of the trip, really came out nice

Myself and @Orangeswifty are self-confessed snorers and decided to share a chalet, slept like babies as neither ones snoring woke the other
There was a bit of a "Goldilocks and the 3 bears" situation as some individuals went to sleep in the wrong beds  :imaposer:
Being really excited for the day's riding I woke very early. A few others needed to a bit more motivation.

Saturday morning started at a frantic pace from Zinyala making our way to Tinmyne.
@Bender got a puncture as soon we reached the first turn-off.
The story goes that neither Bender, @bud500 or @dookie weren't able to break the bead on the mitas EO7 and that Bender had no choice but to drive in the backup vehicle for the rest of the day, this seemed all too easy and we still believe Bender punctured his tire with the nice pocket knife he received the night before.

It was mostly gravel highways with some nice long turns and beautiful bushveld scenery.
Early in the day I came around a turn and just missed a very large male baboon that was eating fruit in the middle of the road, I'm not sure who got a bigger fright but he owes me a new pair of underwear.

It was clear from the start that this was not @Orangeswifty 's first rodeo, the trip was exceptionally well planned, we were in good hands.
There was however a slight calculation error..... the SE's did not have enough fuel to reach Tinmyne

I was doing very high speeds most of the morning but was not able to catch Swifty, Johan, Frank or @Hondsekierie on their SE's

Eventually I caught up with Frank and Johan who were now doing 60km/h on a long straight, both into reserve, still far from Tinmyne and trying to conserve fuel.
Frank ran out of fuel first, unbeknownst to us Swifty also ran out of fuel about 4km ahead of us. Johan limped about 10km to the garage and his tank dried up a few hundred meters short so he had to push. I still had lots of fuel and would have assisted but was still waiting at the previous turnoff for the other 6 bikes that were supposed to meet us at Tinmyne. Frank and myself keeping each other company by explaining to one another just how thirsty we are in the hot sun.
Johan soon returned with some fuel and we took a well deserved break at garage in Tinmyne
