Title: Fitting oem pannier racks
Post by: Daffyd on January 09, 2019, 05:42:32 pm
Good evening, I got myself a second hand set of pannier racks but I am battling to fit them. The right side rack bracket doesn't fit with the pillion footrest, see below. Any suggestions or information would be of huge help.

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

Your Bike is it a GS or GS Adventure.

I give it to you as I understand it.
If you want to fit the racks on a GS you need to change the Pillion Footrest bracket as well.
Normal GS (as from factory) = Expandable panniers.
Verbal estimate to fit Aluminium side panniers to a normal GS will be somewhere around R30 000.  (Now I love my expandables much more. )

Yes, you need different rear footrest brackets.

When I bought my GS I ordered the standard pannier racks too, and even the dealers at the time did not know that it would not fit as-is. When they realised this they were kind enought to exchange the GS footrest brackets for those of the GSA. Perhaps a dealer would be willing to exchange yours?

@Daffyd

There are 2 brackets missing on that setup of yours. See picture below.

The pannier racks on the LC between GS and GSA are Identical. as the bikes are Identical (The GSA just has more stuff on the front end) the two bikes are the same thing.

Pillion footrests are the same between the two if you buy the BMW Pannier racks for the GS you are in essence buying GSA pannier racks.

What BMW have done is they fitted a bracket behind the pillion pegs that allows for the rack to be bolted on from the side.

See attached pic of different pillion footrest brackets. The left hand one comes with the GS, notice the extended piece that supports the standard vario cases. This extension piece is actually in the way, preventing the fitment of the GSA's pannier brackets. The Bracket on the right comes with the GSA.

Thanks Oom.  Shows again how small things are there that you dont notice. I was under the impression that little black plastic thing on the footpegs for the vario cases was just removed from my bike. Wel now I know. I would have sold my racks to anybody without being wiseser. Luve and learns. Thanks again Oom

Thank you all very much, I did not realize that the foot rests were different between the GSA and my LC, eventually just made a bracket out of flat iron to shift my right foot rest about 2cm forward and it now fits perfectly. I very seldom have a pillion. will eventually look at getting a GSA foot rest but for now this will have to do. Thanks again for all your input

Im also looking for ADV OEM pannier racks for my Rallye. My Rallye came with the pillion pegs that are not compatible with the pannier racks. I removed the pillion pegs when I bought the bike... Anyone know whether I would be able to fit the racks without any pillion pegs installed?

We have stock: R3500 per COMPLETE set, and they will fit right up to your Rally foot-peg MOUNTS without issue, we also have the necessary foot-peg BRACKETS if indeed you need them, so for COMPLETENESS SAKE, possibly send a pic to JAN: service@flyingbrick.co.za since he does most of our GSA-to GS OEM rack fitments, but we think it is a straight-up fit.
Cheers, Chris & Team

Cant see why not due to the fact that the mounts on the frame are still there. The pannier rack comes with brackets that bolt into the spots for the pillion pegs

I have managed to acquire a set of ADV pannier racks and can confirm that you can fit them without the pillion pegs but you will need shorter screws.

I would still like to get a pair of standard non-Vário pegs, so if anyone wants to sell me some or swop with my never-been-used Vário compatible set, please let me know. I ride mostly solo, but would like to start taking my daughter on some trips later this year and will definitely need them.

In fact I don’t even think the luggage on the panniers will be sufficient :0 ! As I noticed that she needs a lot of stuff ;).

@MigAfrica

I still have a pair of footrest brackets (brand new), that came off a GSA. Make me an offer!

The footrest brackets have the part numbers:
C46718526741, and
C46718526742.
They are priced at over R2400 each at a dealer. I would accept R2500 for the pair. They're brand new.

I just shifted mine forward, will look at getting the right foot pegs at a later stage but for budget reasons this works fine, might just replace the flat bar with angel aron to stop any bending. I dont really pillion much (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190123/f6d155f972907bf4c1444d769fa1679a.jpg)

Price negotiable!
As stated, make a reasonable offer.
