Title: Going to watch MotoGP in Spain, preceded by trip through Alps…
Post by: Ebredenhann on January 28, 2019, 08:43:57 pm
Experienced Dogs, Clever Dogs, World Traveller Dogs, Old Dogs, Young Dogs, and just Dogs…

Please can I tap into your experience, suggestions and ideas for the following.  This plan is just the rough outline for now, I will start putting all detail together in the near future:
•   I am planning a short trip 11 - 17 June 2019, to go watch the Catalunya MotoGP, Barcelona, Spain,
•   Perhaps fly to Austria, Switzerland, France or Northern Italy, rent a motorbike and do a 2 – 3 day trip in the Alps, longstanding dream I have…
•   Depending on your suggestions on which is the best part of the Alps, in which country/s, then plan a flight to Barcelona the day or 2 before the GP, watch it (or both days), and fly back to SA on the public holiday 17 June.

Any educated suggestions on:
•   Best most scenic part of the Alps, and for how long? 3 days can probaby get a bit long?
•   Typical places to stay over on this journey?
•   Weather conditions that time of the year, their summer?
•   Depending on the best riding spots, where to rent a bike, keep in mind I need to return it again, might not be a round trip, and perhaps suggested websites?
•   Following that, upon returning the bike/s, nearest airport to take a flight to Barcelona?
•   Was thinking to rent something like a GS800, or whatever is reasonably priced and easy through the hairpin bends (never owned a 800 before, on KTM here in SA ).  Another factor, a lady friend might join, she is riding her own Triumph Street Triple here in SA, she will probably be renting something in that line…
•   Tips on watching the GP?
•   Etc?

Much appreciated…thx

I can only comment on Catalunya, I was there last year, Alps still on my bucket list.

I would recommend Grand stands A, B, G,H, and I and maybe E and F, book now, they sell out. With all of those you get general admission as well, so if you're going on Saturday for QP, the grass bank at the top of the track is lekker, with good views and atmosphere. At B, G H and I you can see a big part of the track before the main straight.

I'm a motogp nut so I went all 3 days, we hired scooters so you park in the bike parks which are close to the gates. There are many bike parking lots so check out on Google Maps where to park. Public transport doesn't take you close to the track so consider a scooter or a bike. Going by car is a f-up IMO

No booze allowed, they sell alcohol free beer, YUK!!! Food is average and expensive and the cues are long so pack chow if you can. Also take earplugs and sun screen, those Moto3 bikes are louder than the motogp bikes!!!

I found accommodation in Granollers (which is closer) to be expensive and Barcelona is such a cool city you want to stay there. There are lots of Airbnb  and various other types of accommodation, parking for cars is an issue, especially in the Gothic part. Stay away from La Rambla, it's a tourist trap and there are pickpockets, don't ask LOL.

Barcelona is hot and humid in June!!

As for renting a scooter/bike, just rent in Barcelona and take the Aerobus or the Metro to the airport. I found Uber expensive but easy. The Metro is really easy and it just works!!!! Hola cards work great and rent a bicycle for a few hours if you have time, they can go everywhere.

Also look for seating with a big screen visible IE proper line of sight so you can follow the whole race

I have been looking at the Thailand GP

I have figured this out..

All of the travel companies book and pay for hotels / B&B etc as soon as the track announcements are given. Literally every hotel in Thailand within 15km of the track is already sold out but I can get hotel rooms if i book through a tour company. so book early
