Title: Tankwa Cross Country Rally 2019
Post by: Offroad2 on February 05, 2019, 01:15:28 pm
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4913/46268470504_0066622d2e_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2duA1j5)

Those interested in the Rally class - we have a briefly looked at the possibility of adding an extra section in the Sutherland direction, it seems possible. This could mean two sections with liaisons, one to Middelpos (550km)  and one to Sutherland (800km) + the Off-road Bike  sections.
THERE IS ONE CONDITION, we cannot do it for only 10 Rally bikes, there needs to be a minimum 20-25. Entry fees have been very modest and do not cover costs so they will have to increase. PLEASE we need an indication of who would be seriously interested, if enough we will be able to proceed (my email is on the poster - thanks).

Gold Off-road bikes -+ 800km (maybe more)
Sliver Off-road bikes -+600km
Total Entries will be capped at 100

Enjoy the opportunity  (https://flic.kr/p/2duA1j5)

Yes the poster is a bit misleading - sorry
The plan is for all categories to finish racing on Monday 23rd Sept, the 24th a public holiday gives competitors time to travel home.
We are working on an extra day for Rally class bikes which would be the Friday 20th ie: the Rally class race for four days and Off-road classes three days. These dates have been reserved with Motorsport.
We are just busy with an event this coming weekend then will turn some focus towards Tankwa again and update asap.

From Upington, so far:
Myself
Chris Opperman
Mark Kapnoudis
Willem du Toit is a maybe, but he has a rubber arm
Rudi Tour Neetlingh is also in, but he is only an honourable Upingtonner🤣

CdP13 will report from the Kakamas area. Looks like 3 or 4, but only 2 in the RB class.

I am definetiy in for 1, maybe 2 Rally Class entries. As well as 1/2 mates that would do Offroad class.

Was great event last year. Really hope you get the 20 Roadbook entries.

Cheers

Thanks Charl, Bill & Co   we really managed to turn Tankwa into a great event (even if I say it myself) this happened with passion & hard work.
Dave (Beserker) and I are wanting to add an extra marathon day for the road book class (+-800km), we are serious and committed,  but that comes with extra costs such as medics (3 x teams), timing, officials & of course track setting/routes time (big cost), therefore lets gather riders and promote.

Personally myself and fellow dedicated helpers are passionate to both Rally and Off-road, there is place for both and it brings Off-road closer to Rally and that is where Tankwa is unique. Spectators and families have the privilege of route hopping on the Off-Road class sections, chilling at Race control, making a fantastic environment..... that is Tankwa. Our commitment to local communities has been huge and long term, our club has just raised and sent 60K worth drought relief animal feed to the Tankwa farmers, we also did so in 2018 (200k in value of feed and water supply) - I will open & post a Thank You thread soon).

We have reached an agreement with  Sarel at African Stuff for satellite tracking, so that will happen.

For what competitors get,  our entry fees will be far more reasonable than most Rallys.

@ Cracker sorry to read, hope you heal soon.

We will report back soon - Cheers

Every time I see this thread I feel compelled to sing the praises of this event!!

I had a 2 day glimpse into the route testing and organising that goes into this. It is INCREDIBLE! Clive is a legend, his wife even more so.

PLEASE support this event. For your own good. You don't know what you're missing.

Entries  will open  in a month or so this can only be done once final decisions on the routes and possible extra rally class day have been completed. However we will set up an an "Expression of interest" Tab so people can book their spot so long.

Kind regards

Hi my apologies - I have put it to MSA and need to discuss further - they waiting on me, I just had too many work & track commitments too.
We (WCOC) host a National (KB400) & two back to races this coming weekend after that our series only has 1 round left (which I will not be arranging)  so  we can really focus on Tankwa 20119. We will put something together to secure your spot as soon as possible. Beserker with some key Tankwa helpers have been burning the wick at KB but fairly certain we can announce more details soon (it is very promising !!!!). One thing for sure is after KB I will change focus 100% to Tankwa onwards !
Thanks for your patience & kind regards.

There are a couple of YouTube vids which explain a lot about roadbook rallying.

Lyndon Poskitt did a great vid with commentary about the Mongolian Rally:

https://www.youtube.com/v/VQiqxbKxCR4

And here's one from a bunch of real amateurs doing an introduction to Roadbook Rallying with proper Pooratech equipment.

Sooo...

Most of the Offroad Racing done, time for us to focus on the Tankwa, and for you to bring your A - Game on.

Exciting news, some more classes for you to compete in:

Rally - full on Rally, road worthy bike, road book, 250km range etc.  The Rally class starts first, on clean tracks for them to test their roadbook skills.
Rally Light - as per above, navigation by GPS.

Rally "Light" class, i.e. an adventure bike class, must be able to do the distance, but navigation is with GPS.
They will start after the Rally class, with a delay - same race, same day, same distance, same-same, but without the commitment to a rally navigation set-up.

It is specifically aimed at the riders that prefer the the type of riding that makes a 500/690 the preferred adventure bike, or those with rally aspirations and starting out on a small budget.
We need to grow the numbers in some way, not breaking at least even is not sustainable for a club - as it is, there is a shortage of opportunity to grow local talent, and our thought was to lower the bar to entry, and entice more riders.

Off Road classes

Gold Class, approx 800km

Open:      Max  300 2T, 450 4T
Big Bore: Min   500 2T,  550 4T
Juniors:   Max  200 2T,  250 4T
Ladies:

Silver Class, approx 550km

Men:      Race what you bring
Ladies:   Race what you bring
VE         Pre 1994

VE (VinDuro for those that does not compete in VMX)  -  lot of guys with old Maico's, Huskies, XR's, XT's, IT's, PE's, the mighty CR/KX/KTM 500 2T's, etc. etc. etc.
The Tankwa will give you the oppertunity to again race them like yester-year, in conditions that spawned the original design.

Personally, I think it is not only a great oppertunity for riders with these bikes, but also for spectators  to witness the power and glory of these monsters.

Finally:  short survey, let us know what you think:  http://tiny.cc/o2h76y (http://tiny.cc/o2h76y)

Guys, can you just provide some more information here please ?

I've gone to the website and completed the form. I'll mail that to Jolene.
Which license do I need. MSA or WOW ?
I did have a look at MSA, but the Tankwa is not listed there as an event yet?

Thanks
Mark

If you don't have an MSA license you can take out a One event license just for Tankwa. But I feel your pain, I went to check out MSA's online web site and it's not exactly user friendly. I couldn't find any link under my login profile to add a new license for 2019... go figure.

PLEASE NOTE minimum requirement is a club license or one event club license NO WOW license for Tankwa.

Hi Mark
Just checked with MSA - they will load the event once the event permit has been issued. I'll submit the regs for the permit after this weekend's meetings in Tankwa. It normally take a week to ten days and let you know sorry about the red tape.

Very keen on taking the XR in the Vinduro class.

Just a few questions, sorry haven't done something like this before.

1. Do you need your own GPS or is there an option of renting one?
2. If it's only me and my wife, will that be good enough or do you actually need a team?

Hi
Yes you need a GPS something  like Garmin Etrax 10 or 20 upwards
You don't need a service team we have a fuel truck that takes the fuel cans out early mornings.

If you don't have an MSA license you can take out a One event license just for Tankwa. But I feel your pain, I went to check out MSA's online web site and it's not exactly user friendly. I couldn't find any link under my login profile to add a new license for 2019... go figure.

Hi Guys on the WCOC web site under downloads there is a Step by Step link on how to purchase a MSA license online
PLEASE NOTE minimum requirement is a club license or one event club license NO WOW license for Tankwa.

Will put up more info asap.

Cool thanks ... would you be able to have them add the Tankwa event on MSA ? So that I can go ahead and purchase the license.

Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark
Just checked with MSA - they will load the event once the event permit has been issued. I'll submit the regs for the permit after this weekend's meetings in Tankwa. It normally take a week to ten days and let you know sorry about the red tape.
Hi Guys
Tankwa event is loaded at MSA Online (loaded in date order) and you can purchase your MSA ONE EVENT LICENSE for Tankwa XCR. This way you don't require a club Membership. Entries should open in about a week.

Hi Guys,

Maybe I'm missing something but on the MSA website where I have to choose my club in the dropdown menu I don't see anything about a one event license?

Help....

Hi If you choose a one event License you don't need to be a member of a club - the event was loaded this morning under the one event license options - just scroll down due the date order

So if I was to enter with the 1190 and a GPS, it would be silver class big bore?
(with the aim of just finishing...)
Sliver Big Bore -+ 800km (non roadworthy)
Gold Big Bore -+ 1500km (roadworthy)
Both with GPS
Will post classes tomorrow

Hi Clive,

Just checked now. When I log in on my profile I don't see any link or option about a one event licence. It only gives me an option of choosing a club...

Finally got this sorted, thanks.

Another question (apologies):

If I select the license type: One Event Motorcycle (club) and proceed to the next page of insurance, It looks like it's compulsory to take insurance (R285) as it is the only option. Does this mean I have to take it?

A quick answer is yes .................. all MSA sanctioned events require you to have a license AND use their insurance. T

Useful info on GPS mounts.
From personal experience I have found those aluminium billet mounts don't work for my garmin etrax 10 & 20, due to vibration (especially on a Raptor 700) they switch off and have seen this on many bikes too. Tried packing the batteries with press stick, paper and wiring straight to bike battery but they still switch off, however not when in your pocket or hydration pack. It is simply vibration between the battery holder and brain.
Last years event and with scouting we tested there  silicone J mounts with no problem at all, they are definitely worth it. Available for Etrax double or single holder & Oregan models

I followed up.. if you book for 3 nights camping then the 4th night is for free. So you don't need to worry if you are pitching up a day early or if you are staying a day longer when it comes to the tents.

Afternoon Clive,

Trust you are well.

Quick question.

I see on the list of requirements when I entered they talk about upper body armour.

Is it compulsory to have a neck brace and upper body protection?

I was unaware of this and now when I started looking I see it's quite expensive.

Regards
Werner

Hi Everyone - I'm answering Werner here to keep us all informed - You need a standard chest protector but do not need a Neck Brace for MSA Off-Road / Cross Country - with or without neck brace, the choice is yours as a competitor.

Hi Guys,

Maybe someone can help.

My wife and I are driving down from Pretoria. To do the trip in one day might be a bit too much, so we 're looking at a nice halfway overnight stop we can stay.

Somewhere between Hopetown, Strydenburg, Britstown....

Any recommendations will be appreciated?

Thanks

Thanks
Werner

I know you're not on a bike, but these accommodations were suggested by bikers for bikers. Hope you find something here:

Yoh, that's still a lot of racing for my old unfit body  :o I did 30km's with @Fuzzy Muzzy in the sandpit yesterday and needed an afternoon nap  ;D But what the hell, "my Ma het nie bang kinders groot gemaak nie"... roll on Tankwa  :thumleft: I'm in any case just planning on riding this one to get the finishers medal so it'll all be about conservation of bike & body :ricky:

Glad to see Honda is bringing 3 x 450 Rally's to the party, that's going to be a great promo for the Tankwa Rally and for Honda  :thumleft:

To be fair Brett, I think the riding we did on Sunday is like an intense Tankwa , did we only do 30km  :eek7:.. at least with the Tankwa you get to rest on some straights and conserve that body.

The pic above of the riverbed.. oooh  :o

I had a serious workout on Sunday. Also had a nice nap after lunch..

Yeh, only 30km's but it was at a fairly rapid pace at times  ;D But those Tankwa riverbeds are a good workout as well, that shale is like sinking sand at times  :eek7: But ja, thank God there's some respite in between the sand & rocks  :thumleft:

I'd like to say we did but no @Kaboef , we were fairly knackered by then as well. Basically just rode all the sand tracks back along the gnarliest whoops Muzz could find. I swear my arms are 10cm longer today  :o ;)

Spent the weekend in the Tankwa, trying to get my head around the sheer size and grandeur of the place and wishing I had a bike there.

The course has everything! If you're a competitive rider this is the place to show off your skills. And if you're a Sunday rider this is the place to test yourself and to have the ride of your life!

Bone up on your GPS skills and go for it - it's going to be a blast!

Here's a pic of Parc Ferme  :imaposer:

Reading between the lines on FB, there'll be 3 x 450L's at Tankwa kitted with road books etc to tackle the event. All 3 ridden by WD's nogal. But I'll leave it up to them to share, if they so wish, I don't want to steal all their thunder any further.

This is indeed true.

Honda Tygerberg have entered a team of 3 riders on 450 L’s

I want to start a thread on this - question is where? General, Ride reports, racing section or R&P?

hmm.. you can do it one of 2 ways.. start a dedicated thread in the racing section which will cover everything from your prep work and cover the event

If you wanted you could follow up with a condensed version as a ride report in that section as it gets more traffic.

You should know me better than that. I am at too lazy to do it twice.

If allowed I would prefer to do it in General. As it will be bike, ride, race, preparation and all other things bike related. It is also where most of the 450 critics hang out  :)

Until which point will you still accept entries for the GPS class?  I'm assuming that entries for the rally class will close shortly due to the requirement to print the RBs.

Also, will there be fuel at Rooiputs? Just need to know whether to trailer the bike there with a full tank or not.

Thanks

The rally class needs to have a fuel range of 250km where the silver class is 70km.

Take all the fuel you will need , I doubt there will be enough fuel at rooiputs for the organisers, marshals and all the competitors but you can confirm with Clive..

Rally class will need a range -+ 150km due to change of new land acquired joining HQ farms which reduces liaisons a tittle but adds to Special Stages
At most for Rally 2 cans but one should do for outside refuels (can are returned in evenings).

Man how I wish I was able to make this trip.

Unfortunately I couldn't finish the XR500R in time for the rally and had to cancel with Clive and he's team. Not a good feeling at all, but I will be there in spirit.

You guys must enjoy the rally (NOT race) and be safe out there.

Take lots of pics and please share.

Done & dusted (and I mean that literally)  ;D Another superb Tankwa XC and it just keeps on growing every year  :thumleft: We only got home around 10pm last night and I spent the morning unpacking the bakkie and camping kit. The bike will have to wait until the public holiday tomorrow as I needed to pop into the office.
The KLX450 never skipped a beat all weekend, ran like dream every day. The only hiccup was on full throttle she sucked her carb dry so the float level probably needs some adjusting. I'll post a RR later in the week. Lovely meeting some of the WD's there  :thumleft:

The 3 Honda manne did extremely well but I'll leave them to tell of the adventure  :thumleft:

Undoubtedly the hi-light of my weekend was being passed while going flat out by Stephen on a stock XR650L with a luggage rack on the back. Liewe blikemmer, that oke can ride a big bore bike  :o I haven't seen the final results of Silver Class but I think he might have won it outright, not only in the Big Bore class. Just goes to show, it's not all about the bike  :thumleft:

Some thoughts:  I ran in the rallye class, so that is my perspective.  As far as I'm concerned, any ds bike with an electric starter is a suitable candidate for this event.  Mid-pack speeds are lowish (maybe 110 kph on long straights) and wicked suspension is not a requirement, all it needs to do is be plush over the first half of the travel, as there are miles of fist sized pebbles to cross.

I would not run tubliss again, morning of day 3 I had to insert 5 snot plugs in my rear tire.  Almost missed the start.  Real racing knobblies on soft mousses are IMO the way to go.

You do not need to be a riding god.  Every part of the route was doable, as long as you had confidence.  I think more of the rallye guys had challenges in the river beds than on the rocks (other than maybe me - I paddle over rocks larger than a baby's head).  So make sure your prep includes sand riding.

If you have an older DS bike like a late KLR600, 1st gen KLR650, XT660 or a XR650L, you have a suitable bike to do this.  Some those are of course not 18" rear equipped, so a mousse might be an issue.  Cut a piece out of a 18 and mend with gasket maker. A DRZ400 is perfect.

The bike and rider that surprised a lot of riders this year. Stephen McGregor on a stock Honda XR650L. Besides the uncorking, no other mods to motor or suspension. The only place he mentioned he struggled was in the soft riverbeds on the finally day when the plush suspension did him no favours.
He asked me to post these pics to encourage more riders to enter the Big Bore class next year and come on enjoy the Tankwa terrain  :thumleft:

The Tankwa rocks aren't only hard on bakkie tyres, they'll eat a bike tyre as well if you show them no respect.

Pic 1 is the Gold Class winners tyre after the marathon stage (David Ellis)

Pic 2 is Dirk's tyre from his GS1200. He followed his girlfriend around the Rally route. She was on a KTM500.

Pic 3 The farmers tyre shed workshop, almost a full time job on race weekend.

Pic 4 When your mousse collapsed two stage ago but you refuse to change it (the only other Kawasaki in the race, also a KLX450R)

1st in Big Bore Silver (the only bike in that Class) but he would have placed 3rd in Silver Overall with his stage times. That's pretty impressive if you look at the bikes in that class.

Just a few random photo's of the event. Apologies for no photo credits but I received these via our whatsapp group so I'm not sure who took all of them.

Pic 1 & 2 - YammySuper10's laaitie styling. He rode a very mature race and placed 2nd in 200cc Golf Class on his Droomers Yamaha YZ250FX
Pic 3 - YammySuper10 and @Crossed-up about to leave to open gates ahead of the Stage 1 in Dion's Yamaha buggy
Pic 4 - The injury list grew as the confidence grew... respect the rocks  ;D
Pic 6 - Robert Gibbon (Dakar riders last year) enjoying the route
Pic 7 - About to start the descent into the plain... that must have been scary on a GS1200  :o
Pic 8 - The Husky pit
Pic 9 - Robert
Pic 10 - Rooiputs (Start area)

There was no rally lite class, there were GPS classes and then the rally class, which used roadbooks.

The Gold Big Bore class turned out to be a "Rally Lite" class.  The same route as the Rally class, but used GPS navigation.  The class was originally for bikes over 525cc (if I remember correctly), but changed later to be 'open'. It was only me and Nadene in that class in the end.

I am a bit busy with work at the moment, but will post a review soon!

Here are the results for the Gold Big Bore aka Rally lite class.

Stephen McGregor was incorrectly put on this result sheet.  He was the winner of the Silver Big Bore class and I believe third overall in the Silver class.  He deserves a lot more praise than what he got at the results ceremony!

Hey Superman.  Thanks for letting me bye on that last day in the rocks.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but rally lite traditionally means a converted off road bike with the major distinction that the road book and nav equipment must be handlebar mounted vs the use of a frame mounted tower.  Thus my Honda was a lite (even though it was just 5kg less than your GS, while the Omega 690s were full rallye versions.  So, next year when you do the rally stages again, but with a roadbook, your GS will be in a special class called super pesante.  Kidding....

Musings on the Tankwa Cross Country Rally 2019

Driving back through the great Karoo in Lilith, our trusty Landy, with a beard caked with Tankwa dust, I had a lot of time to reflect on the Tankwa Rally, or as Cornie would say, the Real McGuru.

With me, were my father, wife and daughter, all exhausted from 4 days in the sun and dust, and me, tired, but adrenaline still coursing through my veins.

Clive says there is nothing like it out there, "Tankwa is Tankwa", and I have to concur.
However, Tankwa is not JUST Tankwa, it is something special, something more...

I might be wrong on this, so correct me if I am. Tankwa is one of the only two navigational rallies in the entire Southern Africa, the other being the Kalahari Rally.

What makes the Tankwa so special is not the exceptional terrain or the tough technical course/route, it is the PEOPLE, and the EXPERIENCE.

The moment we arrived with a broken brake line, Cornie's first response was: " Welcome, and don't worry, we will sort it out", and that was the attitude for the entire weekend.

It is a race where your friends and family can join in on the adventure and camaraderie that rally riders live for. It was very special to have my wife and daughter (always by my side at a rally) joined by my father and brother and his wife (none who have ever been to a rally like this).

It is a place to meet your Facebook friends in person and share a drink or story and sit around a fire.

It is a place to meet Amageza legends , Dakar heroes and Dakar hopefuls!

Above all of that, it is a place to MAKE new friends, and MAKE new stories for future campfires!!!!
I would like to thank my wife, daughter, father, brother and sister-in-law and all the rest of my family for their amazing support!!

I would also like to thank the best support team (Juan Coetzee, Justin Taylor, Trymore Tassyman Tasara) and best brand out there, KTM Cape Town for getting me through the entire event without an single mechanical issue, my blood runs an even brighter ORANGE (if that is possible) after the Tankwa.
Thank you Enduristan South Africa for providing me with your great products! Rally is a TEAM sport, it would not be possible without you!

I would also like to say a massive thank you to Clive and the entire team. An event like this is a HUGE undertaking! All the marshals, medics, caterers, land owners, and everyone else who helped pull this event off, we as riders all thank you for your efforts, if it were not for you, we would not be able to ride in or see the special part of the world we call the Tankwa.
Now for those of you interested in the nitty gritty of the race itself, read further:

The race itself is something completely unique (in my limited rally experience). Firstly it's a challenge just to get to the venue. I have NEVER seen so many flat tires congregated in one place in my life, the legendary R355, the longest stretch of dirt road in South Africa without a single town or petrol station, is famous for destroying tires, and it lived up to its name. We did not lose any tires, but we did lose our brakes a kilometre before the venue due to a rock severing the rear brake line.

When we arrived (without brakes), we manoeuvred as best we could to get set up in the camp (we were some of the first to arrive), and then sat back and watched as fellow competitors, old friends and new friends arrived . By 16:00 we headed to Race HQ for final paperwork, number collection, tracker fitment and scrutineering. By now most teams had arrived and we were all ready to get riding the next day.
Before bed time I did my customary stroll through the camp and popped into some camps listening to camp fire stories of previous events, bikes, and all the other things we talk about around camp fires in the Tankwa.

We (the rally class) set off first each day, and so at 8am on Friday morning we set off on our first stage which was a 92km time trial. It was very fast, flowy and had great navigation. (Here is a link to the the overview of the ride - https://www.relive.cc/view/vxOQAAMrZMO )
That afternoon we set out on a liaison to Halfway House Tankwa, to complete two loops. The 2 loops turned into 1 when we accidentally got set off in the wrong direction. Rally bikes scattered in ALL directions trying to make sense of the road book. I wish I could see what the tracking looked like, as I am sure it was like fireworks on new year's, bikes absolutely all over the place. After we realised we are not going to find our way we headed back to the start, and were told that we don't have to worry about lost time, we are only doing one loop and we were set off in the right direction as we arrived. This loop was quite fun, with a great mix of technical section and fast hard pack gravel to some fesh-fesh sections. We liaisoned back as the sun was setting and had a great meal of potjiekos before heading to bed to get enough sleep for the next day.

Saturday, Special 2 was the longest day with 468km total. We had one liaison and then special stage for the rest of the day. The entire day altered between technical sections, rocky roads, super fast hard pack roads, fence lines and extremely technical sections. To me this was the best day and I had the most fun, just as you got tired of the technical sections, the route would open up and you would be riding on a moon landscape where there is NOTHING, at 140km/h, and boom, its gets technical again. At the end of the day Martin Lourens and I were chatting and he said - "If you like riding a bike, today was a great day."

That night there were a lot of tired bodies and minds in the camp, and the campsite was definitely quieter than the night before as everyone dozed off to sleep with tired bodies. It was also a day that marked the spirit of rally riding as some of us came together to wait for some of the teams that came in way after dark. The day tested riders and bikes, as well as the ability of riders to just push on and finish the day no matter how tough it gets. Huge respect to every rider that decided to push on and finish that day, that is what rally is all about. Here the team from Honda Wing Tygerberg really showed us how to stick together as a team, ride together and get it done, you guys were awesome.
Here is an overview of day 2 - https://www.relive.cc/view/v8qkNNBR536

Marking the roadbook on Saturday night it was clear to me that the ORGA had no intentions of making the last day easy for us. They wanted to make sure that we EARNED our finishers medals.

Lining up on Sunday morning had us staring down the barrel of a 373km day with 2 liaisons and 3 specials, with the 3rd and last special being mostly 70km of river beds mixed with what is for me hard enduro (we are talking boulders).

Day 3, was sure tough and tested our mettle and resolve and willpower! Here is a link to the route (https://www.relive.cc/view/vr63ZZzB78O), if you look closely, you will see where I took a wrong turn and actually did the river section twice (once up and once down) by mistake and had to re-do it coming back on the actual route (Ek was nie dik van die lag nie).

As day 3 drew to a close, and those of us still left at the camp congregated for the prize giving. To my surprise/shock I managed 3rd place(super chuffed). Celebration and jubilation followed as we braaied and kuiered late into the night, sharing stories of the things we loved. Congratulation to Martin Lourens in first and Johan Van Wyk in second place in the rally class, and congratulations to ever single finisher, it was tough!

Kidding....

Lol.  I was misinformed then.  Thanks for educating me  :)

PS:  Why would anyone ride a bike that weighs just 5kg less than a GS that isn't a GS?  :P

Just curious spectator here - how on earth can be 450X only 5 kg less than GS? What did you put on that Honda - even with big tank and some tower I wouldn't expect it to be over 170kg fueled max? Or is GS that light? If so then it definitely is the unicorn many people have been looking for and I'll be buying one pronto.

My X weighs the same as a 690, so nothing excessive. However, it has a 25 liter tank up front which makes the front very heavy. I’ve bought a safari 5 l rear tank yesterday, that will sort the distribution.

My attempt at humour was not finely crafted.
