Title: Honda Adventure Roads 2019
Post by: Kobus Myburgh on February 23, 2019, 10:21:24 am

In 2018 Specialised Adventures was approached by Honda Europe and Ride & Drive Communications and Events to offer technical support for the prestigious Honda Adventure Roads 2019 event.

After successful negotiations they were appointed as preferred service provider.

When I received the call from Hardy to ask whether I would like to be part of his team, I of course accepted without hesitation.

This event is now on our doorstep and we hope to give you a bit of insight of how this goes down.

In the meantime, you can get some basic information of the event here:

I left for Specialised Adventures’ HQ on Thursday just after mid day.

I always look up to the drive to Beaufort West, whilst really excited about the section from there to Loxton.

25% gravel only, or am I misreading it?

Not quite quest stuff, but I am sure will be super organized as normal...

Looking forward to hear what the European "adventure bikers" think of our "wild gravel rides".... all 25% of it...(wink)
I heard a little bird singing that Juan Barreda might join the ride for a short stint, as one of Honda Europe's ambassadors....but hey, you know little birds... sometimes they turn out to be Mynas, making a loud noise, chasing away the locals...

You have read correctly Striggs.  Certainly not similar to Quest - True Adventure and never meant to be.  It is a much more relaxed event showing Clients some of the beautiful parts of our country.

Ride & Drive have put together quite a spectacular route, without going too far off the beaten track.

You’ll have to wait and see if there’s merit in that rumor Pierre.  :sip:

The quietness of the Karoo and hospitality of the Specialised Adventures team led to a good nights sleep.

The next morning the work started.

In simple terms, our task during the event is to be prepared for any and every eventuality from a technical perspective.

In excess of 35 Africa Twin Adventure Sports were shipped ex Europe and awaits us in Durban, where we will PDI, fit windscreens, fit navigational equipment etc. prior to the VIP’s arrival.

During the event we need to ensure that the bikes remain in tip top condition, attend to any technical issue on an adhoc basis and perform the services as per manufacturer specification.

This meant that we had to think of every tool possibly required to perform whatever task gets thrown at us.

As if this is not enough, Hardy had to put together a parts list of things we might need on the trip, including all the service items.  To put it into perspective, we need to change about 200 liters of oil for the 1,000km run in service.

Leaving nothing to chance, we went over everything once again and did some alterations and maintenance on the trailer, packed the vehicles and ticked off the last boxes on our checklist.

Yesterday and today was our traveling days to Durban.  After again making sure that we have everything covered, we set off yesterday around mid day for our overnight destination, being Bloemfontein.

We left Bloemfontein this morning and traveled the last stretch to Durban, meeting up with another member of the Specialised Adventures team (Janco) just after Estcourt.

It was amazing to see how beautiful and green  the Freestate currently is, not to mention KZN.

Upon arrival we were met by one of the Ride & Drive team members who welcomed us and assisted with the necessary check in etc.

We also had to pick up our 4th and last team member at the airport.

After meeting the rest of the Ride & Drive team, the daily planning meeting was held, followed by a great dinner and even better company.

And knowing what lies ahead tomorrow, I think it’s time for a good nights rest.

The view from our tents.  (Yeah, we’re roughing it. )

We were greeted this morning with a beautiful sunrise.

After breakfast, we set off to Bidvest SACD where the bikes were stored.  Seeing these brand new AT’s lined up like that was certainly a goosebump moment and one I’ll remember for a long time.

The moment was however quickly interrupted by the fact that preparation of the bikes must start straight away if we wanted even the slightest chance of finishing over the next two days.

I lived in Durban (Salt Rock) for two years before, but completely forgot how humid it was.  We soon realized that we will have to up our liquid intake if we want to see the day out.

It didn’t take the team long to find a rhythm and system that ensured an optimum production sequence.

With our newfound rhythm, we made good progress and finished earlier than expected.  This gave us enough time to load the 6 privately owned bikes and deliver them to the hotel.

The other bikes are all ridden by the Ride & Drive team to the hotel.

Some pics of the day:

Today was a long day.  All the bikes had to be moved from the warehouse to the hotel.

Not such an easy task when driving through the Durban CBD with a huge trailer in tow.

The jokes and laughs through the sweat and taxi frustrations made up for it though.

The highlight for the day was meeting Jean-Michel Bayle, who joined us for supper.

If you don’t know who he is:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Bayle

“Born in Manosque, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Bayle won the FIM 125cc motocross world championship in 1988, and the 250cc motocross world championship a year later. He competed in the United States in 1991, becoming one of few Europeans to win the AMA 250cc and 500cc Outdoor National Championships. Having won all the major motocross championships, Bayle became one of the few riders to switch motorcycling disciplines, going from dirt track motocross events to pavement based road race events.

He competed in the 250cc road racing world championship for the Aprilia factory racing team during the 1994 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, and in 1996 moved up to the 500cc class for the Kenny Roberts-Yamaha team.[2] He scored points twice in 1999.[3] He managed one pole position in the 250cc class and 2 poles in the 500cc division but, never managed to finish on the podium.[2] In 2002, he teamed with Sébastien Gimbert and Nicolas Dussauge to win the Bol d'or and the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance races.[1] Bayle suffered serious injuries during the 2002 season and retired from road racing competition.

He still competes in motocross events and campaigned in the French observed trials national championship. Bayle was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000.[1]”

Our day started with fetching 4 bikes from Honda Wing Umhlanga, supplied by Honda SA.

All these bikes were supplied either with OEM tyres or more road biased tyres.  To ensure all the bikes are fitted with the similar brand, our task was to fit the new ones.

In parallel to this, we also started to do our own PDI to ensure everything is set correctly and working as it should.  This included ensuring chain slack is correct, checking the oil level and also that all bolts is as per spec.

We found a number of discrepancies and loose crash bars, but everything is getting sorted as we progress.

We are also fitting what is called a Trippy, which is a mix between a GPS and an electronic roadbook, as well as Spot trackers.

More on that a bit later, for now it’s back to work.

The day was spent fueling all the bikes, continuing with the PDI’s, lubing all the chains and assuring all tyres are at the recommended pressure.

The majority of the tyres are Karoo 3’s with a couple of TKC80’s on the privately owned bikes and a mix and match on a couple of others.

We are running them at slightly higher pressures due to the long asphalt distances they will cover.  Depending on how aggressive they ride, we have our reservations whether it would last the full distance without at least a heat cycle.

All this work took place in the lower basement.  It was hot, humid and full of exhaust fumes due to running our compressor of one of the bakkies.  Great fun, this is Africa after all!

A couple of pics of the day:

The tracking units.

I’m getting quite used to the instrument cluster on the new Adventure Sports and it will be interesting to see if it also get all dusted up like the previous model.

You can see the Tripy II Mount in the center of the handlebars.

What is the difference between this Adventure Sports and the one currently available to us?

First guy to answer it correctly can get one of our Adventure Roads 2019 stickers.

The more I look at your pics the more confused Im getting!
Are you sure these are ADV Sports models and not just new colour 2019 Twins ?
No flat seat, no steel lugage frame and in the photos the tank also dosnt look any
bigger than standard ?
Just asking ?

You are probably right Andrew.  I’ll check again.  I was so excited about the black frame on the perceived ATAS that I am totally oblivious to the rest.  The ATAS does have a much higher seat, the first thing I noticed when I went to look at them at the dealer.

The standard version - the one we know since 2016-  still apply's to the "normal" AT that are still produced, but the Adventure Sport is more of a Adventure tourer with some additions. Most notable...It has the Touring screen. Bigger tank. Slightly beefed up suspension, raising it by a couple of millimeters. Ride by wire. Heated grips. Colour scheme, of course. New bash plate and crash bars included.

It does seem that these particular Adventure Road, new colour scheme bikes are just that... only new colour scheme bikes. Its part of the standard AT versions that are still manufactured.

Back to the Tripy II they use for navigation:

This is what the device look like.

We also have a booklet with the printed roadbook.  Very much Rally style, with similar tulips, warnings, distance to next etc.
Certainly a very nifty device and looking forward to putting it to the test.

We’ve just retired to our rooms after assisting some of the clients with setting up their bikes and fitting some farkles.  Things like bar raisers, tank bags etc.

We’re up tomorrow morning early and really looking forward to hitting the road.  We’ve been stationery for way too long!

Day 1 - Durban to Clarens (406km)

We had an early start to the morning on day 1 of the official event.

Oom Bonnie assisted the guests with setting their clocks and making sure all technical issues were attended to while the rest of us were hooking up the trailer and ensuring our vehicles are ready for the day.

The excitement was tangible and it was great to finally leave Durban.

There was shiny new ATGATT all around.  For some it was the first time on the AT and what is quite interesting is how few DCT’s there is.  I would’ve thought that more people would opt for the DCT, especially due to the route selection and being ideal for this kind of touring.  Anyway ..... we were off through the city of Durban to get to the N3.

Unfortunately it wasn’t long before we had our first incident.  One of the journalists fiddled with his equipment, didn’t see the Marshall in front of him stopping at the red traffic light and drove into him, toppling over.  Fortunately it happened at low speed and minimum damage.

The section of N3 was certainly good to get the riders accustomed to their bikes, but the traffic was no joke and cause for concern, especially when taking into account that all of the riders are used to driving on the opposite side of the road.

We were quite pleased when we took the off ramp to Howick and shortly after had our first stop at the historical capture site of Nelson Mandela.

It was our turn to get into action and assess the damage to the bike that had the earlier incident.  The rear brake pedal was badly bent and one of the panniers had a hole in it.  Not Honda’s best attempt at manufacturing panniers.

We quickly swopped out the damaged part with a new one and patched up the pannier as best we could.  All was good to hit the road again.

After a cup of coffee we set off for our next stop.  Not long and we received the following message.

Just as you turn left on the R74 towards Winterton we found the rider with a flat rear wheel.

The valve of the tube was ripped off completely and we couldn’t help thinking that the nut wasn’t properly locked.  Anyway, 15 minutes later the rider was back on track.

From there it was incident free, apart from tightening a mirror, to Little Switzerland, our lunch stop for the day.

The road we followed was quite familiar and brought back some good memories of the +- 2 years we lived in Drakensville.  We of course had to stop at the little padstal to get some of the best biltong in the country.

Day 1 - Continued

We left little Switzerland and followed the road into the Freestate, past the Sterkfontein dam.  We were fortunate that the wind wasn’t as bad as expected.

Passing through Golden Gate was simply beautiful.  This is certainly a place you have to experience both in winter and summer, as the change in color provides for two kinds of beautiful.

Everyone arrived in Clarence in one piece and in high spirit.  The guests certainly was in awe of the days scenery.

Before our day could end, there was some minor things to address, the majority being lifting the gear selector slightly higher.

Day 2 - Clarens to Premier Resort Sani Pass (280km)

It was early start to the day as we loaded one of the marshalls bike onto the trailer.  The mishap of the journalist the previous day actually caused more damaged to Eric, the lead marshall, and partner in Ride & Drive.

His leg was badly swollen and the team medical specialist advised him to take a rest.

Jean-Michelle Bayle, who acts as roaming marshall and mentor, assumed the leading marshall roll for the day.

Our first stop for the day was at Caledonspoort where we entered Lesotho.  We were early and it was quite, which made for a painless border crossing, especially with such a large group.

The group of riders were spread quite wide and, since we were sweeping, we arrived at the top of Sani pass as the first riders were just about ready to leave.

Jean- Michel Bayle first gave a quick briefing of riding position and the various settings on the Africa Twin.

This was the first gravel section of the trip and daunting for some.  I quickly adjusted tyre pressures on the bikes prior to the descent, while Oom Bonnie assisted a GS rider who hit a rock on the ascent and broke off his RHS brake caliper.

Just as the last rider took off, another returned with a rear flat.  We found a little piece of steel stuck in the rear tyre and quickly replaced the tube.

A quick stop at the border control office and we were back in our sweeping position.

I have been fortunate to do the pass a couple of times before and couldn’t believe the condition it was in.  I’ve never seen it this bad.

It wasn’t long before we came to a stop with one of the riders down.  Fortunately he wasn’t seriously injured and apart from some scratches, no serious damage to his bike either.  The rider was however hurting enough to call it quits for the day.

This caused a bit of a challenge however.  With four bikes on the big trailer that Hardy was towing, we made the call the morning to not risk that vehicle coming down Sani pass.

This meant that we had nothing to load the bike on, apart from the small fold up emergency trailers that Ride & Drive has.  While these little trailers are very handy, they are unsprung (if there’s such a word for a trailer with no springs).  With the condition of the pass, this would be too much of a risk.

I was asked to ride the bike down to our overnight accommodation, which was fortunately not too far away, while Oom Bonnie had to nurse the Cruiser down the rest of the pass.

Unfortunately there was no time for pics, but everyone eventually made it to the hotel in one piece, despite about 10 other falls.

After assessing the bikes, no noteworthy damage was found apart from a couple panniers.

There was a sense of achievement amongst the group tonight at dinner, which was great to see.

And now it’s time to rest.  Tomorrow is another challenging route and we’re holding thumbs that the weather holds up.

No such thing as a stupid question.  They actually carry quite a bit of luggage with them.  The backup vehicle with the luggage is at the back, just in front of us.  When they get to the hotel they have a set of clothes they can change into so long.

The event is also a marketing campaign for Honda and they want to showcase their accessory/product range.

Day 3 - Sani to Tiffindell (345km)

OK, na ‘n koppie koffie kan ons seker maar gou die dag se gebeurtenisse vasvat.

We woke this morning with lots of mist at the foot of Sani pass.

This sort of expressed my mood after little sleep the previous night.  With no time to be miserable, I quickly pulled myself towards myself and after a quick shower and a cup of coffee we were ready for whatever the day might bring.

When I entered the car park Hardy and the rest of the guys were all ready to load the bike of the rider that fell yesterday.

With that done we quickly sorted out the rear of the cruiser to make sure our tools are readily available and gave the front a quick clean.

My Oupa was altyd pynlik netjies op sy kar en het ons van kleins af geleer dat jou kar buite by tye mag vuil wees, maar nooit binne nie.  Hy het geglo dit is ‘n direkte refleksie oor hoe jy as mens ook is.  Hardy laat my dink aan my Oupa as dit by voertuie kom.

Anyway, back to our story.  We had our meeting and during breakfast the mist started lifting and so did my mood.

Soon after we got going and it was great to see the guys all excited about the day’s route as they set off in front of us.  You could see the guys were starting to get comfortable on their steeds.

We travelled to Heimville where everyone refueled.  I’ve visited Heimville and Underberg many years ago and I was happy to see that it still had the same feel and attraction as I remember it.  So many places nowadays change in a short time, but these two quint little dorpies seem to be well preserved.

Next stop was to be Matatiele as we hit the gravel roads again.  We soon came to a halt after two riders took some time out to enjoy the scenery.

Just as we settled into a nice pace, we saw a rider approaching us.  It was one of the journalists that lost a camera.

We stopped with Antoine from Ride & Drive to see if he finds it.  Hardy was carrying on with the trailer towards Matatiele.

Soon after Antoine turned around to assist the journalist.  A lot of time was lost through this little event.

Our backup team was now spread quite wide and out of radio contact.  Not long and we received a message:

“F71-020
ll=-30.68912,28.50276
HAR - J ai besoin d une aide technique.
I need a technical help”

Seconds later we received the call from Hardy that it was a rear flat in Matatiele.  We sent a message to Antoine that we will be heading towards the distress call while he still assisted the journalist.

When we arrived in Matatiele, Hardy already had the rear wheel off and we were just in time to hand him a new tube and assist with the easy bits.

Done and dusted, with the rider on his way again, we waited for the last bike and bakkie to catch up so we can fall back in our sweeping position.

By the time they arrived, we were approximately 70km behind the group.  Another refuel was scheduled in Mount Fletcher and by the time we arrived there, we managed to make up some good ground.

Next stop was a picnic lunch next to the road on our way to Naudés nek.

The scenery was spectacular!

As we stopped, we were informed that we’ll have to load another bike on the trailer due to damage after a fall.  No injury to the rider, but the engine side cover had a hole in it and lost the majority of the oil.

The damage was quickly assessed and the Pratley Steel putty appeared soon afterwards.  The team made quick work of the situation and while we were grabbing a quick lunch, it gave the Pratley putty time to set.

Fed, showered and washing done, let’s continue:

We left the picnic spot yesterday afternoon and continued our journey to Tiffendel.  It certainly is Adventure bike heaven.

The beauty of the area is very difficult to put in to words and you have to simply experience it yourself.

All 3 our vehicles were traveling together and at short intervals someone was expressing their experience of how beautiful it is.  We were traveling substantially slower than the bikes and the other rental vehicles.  Hardy had a heavy load to pull and Janco was carrying our precious load with all the spares.

Despite a couple of tumbles, we did not have any mechanical issues to attend to.  We have seen it on two Quests and now again and can honestly say that these bikes crash really well.

Just before the turn off to Tiffendel, we decided that again it was not worth risking the trailer and bikes, as well as our spares vehicle trying to go up to the resort.  We knew there wasn’t much to attend to and the decision was made that Janco and Hardy will stay in Rhodes while myself and Oom Bonnie join the group at Tiffendel.

Upon our arrival we got going with the necessary maintenance immediately to make use of the last bit of remaining daylight.

A couple of clutch levers were replaced.  (The AT’s OEM handguards is unfortunately a must do upgrade, especially if you plan on falling.  ;)). The majority of chains needed adjustment, tyre pressures were checked and and and ...........

The guys were in high spirit and gave the pub some proper support last night!

I went to bed very content.

Day 4 - Tiffendel to Gariep (350km)

We were up early as we still had one or two things to do prior to the group leaving, which included a clutch lever replacement.

After breakfast, meeting and riders briefing, the group were ready to tackle the South African roads.

Everyone assembled just outside the gate and the riders were set off one by one to allow a dust gap and some drone footage.

We past the quaint little town of Rhodes again and straight after the pace picked up, making it a challenge for us to stay with the group.

The scenery again did not disappoint, although time to take pictures were few.

Die manne van Honda Europa het gister hoekal gesê hulle is besig om te kyk na beskerming vir enige toekomstige byeenkomste van die aard.

Al moeilikheid met dieAT's is dun engine casings en papwiele. Weettie hoekom At so baie papwiele kry nie

Day 4 - continued ......

Our lunch stop for the day was Lady Grey.  At the mornings briefing it was mentioned that there were strikes happening in this small town.

As we got closer to town, we were notified that the strikes were still underway and we need to take an alternative route through one of the farms.

These deviations makes for great fun with an adventure bike or 4x4, but if you are towing a huge trailer and have a 4 x 2 bus, it makes life unnecessarily challenging.

We however made our way through and had lunch at the planned venue.

After what felt like half a day of lunch stop, the local police service informed us that it was a good time to leave as a window of opportunity opened with strikers dispersing, or maybe taking a break, who the hell knows with these okes.

We left town in close convoy.  Rocks and rubber bullets were flying but all made it unscathed.  I can just imagine what went through the minds of our foreign visitors.  It was probably a good thing in a sense for at least a handful of people to see what really happens in our country.

Out of town and it wasn’t long before we got onto some gravel roads again.  It was late and the guys were picking up the pace to a point where we got nervous.

Not long and we received the notification for technical assistance.

As we picked up the pace to attend to the distress call, another one came in.  We decided to split the team with myself and Oom Bonnie attending to the first one and Hardy and Janco the second one.

Both were rear flats, ours had a nail in it and I’m not sure of the cause on the other one.

Team Janco and Hardy however also got to the scene of a crash.  One of the riders came in way too hard in a sharp corner, overshot it (in 4th at the time) and went straight over a ledge.

We didn’t see the scene but apparently the rider was extremely lucky not to seriously injure himself.  As for the bike, well, let’s just say that if your in France and looking for a demo, maybe give this one a skip.

The rest of the way to Forever Resort Gariep fortunately went without incident.

When the guests kick of their shoes at arrival, our work starts.

Worked carried on until late evening, but nothing serious.  ‘n Africa Twin breek mos nie.

After < 1400km, the first rear tyre was toast!

Ek weet swaer....wat ek eintlik bedoel met my stelling is dat die Rumbux baie beter beskerming bied teen die kante as die bashplate wat hier gewys word en dat dai spesifieke skade verhoed sou word deur Rumbux....

Day 5: Gariep to Graaff- Reinet  (340km)

We were greeted with a pretty decent sunrise with our first cup of coffee in hand.

The last time I stayed here the dam level was substantially lower and the gale force winds kept everyone inside.

Prior to breakfast, we lubed all the chains and made sure all the riders issues was attended to.

We set off towards Dorsland’s valley for what was expected to be fairly easy roads.

Day 5 - Continued

We set off over the Gariep dam wall in all its splendour and followed the R58 towards Colesberg.  As we entered Nimmo's home town, there was a small gathering around a traffic officer.  We stopped and the reason for the hold up was an outdated license on one of the SA rental bikes.  Even though we had no responsibility, nor accountability for the rental bikes, it was embarrassing that the Europeans ship numerous bikes, thousands of miles across the ocean, without any problems and here we as Saffers can't even put a new license disk on a bike we rent out for this prestigious event!

Jean-Michel with his luggage in tow the morning of departure.

With the fine issued, we set off past Sunset Chalets onto the N9 towards Graaff Reinet, through Noupoort, Carlton Pass and eventually refuelled in Middelburg.  It's strange how familiarity breeds content:  Photos were getting fewer due to the area being so familiar to me.

After about 30km back on the N9, we turned left on some gravel roads towards Wapadsberg.

We already had our first puncture for the morning and Janco and Hardy had the honour of doing the repair, which gave me the time to take a sneaky picture of the action.

It was approximately 21km of welcomed gravel road that brought us back to the N9.  In this time we had another puncture caused by a piece of wire.

After lunch we headed straight to Graaff Reinet, drove through town and headed towards to the Valley of Desolation.  It was properly hot by now.

With all the practice, we were now down to about 32 seconds to repair a rear puncture.   ;) :lol8:

All in all it was a great day out with no mishaps, the only complaints being that due the extreme heat for some Europeans.

Day 6:  Graaff-Reinet to Port Elizabeth (299.2km)

After a decent breakfast at the Drostdy hotel, some minor adjustments and personal preference on handlebars, gear selectors etc. was made.  There was excitement in the air since this marked the day that Joan Barreda and Ignacio Cornejo would join the group in Port Elizabeth.

We took the R75 towards Bie's town Jansenville, where we made a coffee stop at the Ark.  After the first puncture on the previous day, I subtly asked Hardy over the radio if we could do the next repair.  As if the two that followed the previous day was not enough, this day would be full of surprises, especially with team Hardy and Janco making headway straight to PE to sort out some logistics, leaving me and Oom Bonnie to follow the riders for the day.

Approximately 28km out of town, we turned left onto the R400 towards Waterford, which is a gravel road taking you past Darlington dam, Wolvefontein etc.  In general, the Tripy II navigation device is really detailed and a pleasure to use.  What it didn't warn you about on this day was the numerous unexpected ditches and dry riverbed sections we were about to cross.

The first sandy section lay claim to not only its first victim, but also a mirror, some bent handlebars and a LHS pannier.

And then the punctures started!

This is how it works:

You receive a sms with the co-ordinates of where the problem is and the bike number.

An e-mail is also received with basically the same information.

You can then open the two links provided which takes you to a map which you can actually route to should you wish.

You can also track the riders as you drive during the day.

The messages came in short succession.  It was the one puncture after the other and there was no time to take photos or anything else for that matter.  It was pack out, fix, pack in and go until we finally got to the last one.

At the last puncture even one of the bakkies had a flat wheel.  Causes varied from sharp rocks to nails to pieces of wire to snake bites etc.

The group of Spanish riders were the last to receive our attention.  A truly great group of guys with remarkable team spirit.  On arrival we received a cheery welcome and they immediately asked if they could assist.  We gladly accepted, since we were out of new tubes by now and they could assist Oom Bonnie while I carry on patching one of the better tubes.

We were properly tired by the time we reached Addo Elephant Park, which was our lunch stop for the day.  The riders all went for a game drive while we attended to some of the other bikes also claimed by the sand monster.

We arrived in PE late the afternoon, with work far from finished.  You'll remember from an earlier post that the Karoo's were expected to last the entire trip and we were frowned upon when we raised our concern that this might be a little naïve.  Well, some of the tyres were shot by now and fortunately Hardy could arrange for an emergency shipment to PE through Metzeller SA.

With no time to waste, we set up an area in the basement to get to work.  In parallel to getting all the daily niggles attended to, tyre changes started with what we had in stock.

At about 01h00 that morning, the new tyres arrived and we started offloading.  Hats of to Richard and Tiago from Honda Europe who was with us the whole time, making sure we had coffee, water, food and even assisted with the offloading.

Day 7:  Port Elizabeth to Oudtshoorn (424.4km)

We left the hotel with a couple of additional journalists and the film crew that joined the group.  And of course, Joan Barreda and Ignacio Cornejo.  Unfortunately only Ignacio would ride this day since there was a mix up with Joan's luggage and none of his kit arrived as yet.

This meant that he was in one of the vehicles with Richard from Honda Europe.  Hardy and Janco was in the front, followed by Richard and us trailing.  Probably the only time Hardy and Janco was ever going to be in front of Barreda and me keeping up with him!

We followed the R75 and refuelled in Steytlerville.

From there we took the R329 to Willowmore, where we were served with a properse Karoo braai at the Royal Hotel.  It was heaven after so many hotel buffets - jip, you can get gatvol of those.

From here we hit some gravel roads on the R407 past Vondeling.  A particular dry river crossing claimed many victims.  It was one of those where you had an audience cheering you on and lots of motivation and laughter later, everyone made it across, no broken bones, but a couple of egos crushed.

And of course I had to sit on Barreda’s bike. (Ook maar niks gewoond nie!)

It wasn't long after that we received notification of an accident.  One of the journalists that joined us just the night before (his first day of riding) had a big tumble.  When we arrived, the medic was already attending to him and the doctor, who was further up in the convoy, already on his way there.

It was pretty obvious that he was riding too fast, hit the brakes and lost control.  Later that evening we would learn that he broke his clavicle, humerus, all 5 toes on his right foot, some ribs and suffered a punctured lung.  He was admitted to the Oudtshoorn Medi-Clinic and later transferred to George, where he is still recovering until able to fly back home.

We loaded his bike onto the trailer and left the medical staff to attend to the rider.

Apart from this unfortunate incident, everyone reached Buffelsdrift unscathed.

@Kobus Myburgh ... would you still say you prefer tubes to tubeless ?

Sithe I don’t think either is a deal breaker for me.  By far the majority of my riding is done off road and the tubes (albeit a very general statement) is more lenient to pressure fluctuations, i.e. low pressures for sand riding.

One of the few necessary upgrades on the AT is tubes.  The OEM ones are simply not up to standard.  We saw it on the 2017 Quest  especially, with far more punctures than this trip.

Ever since I put heavy duty tubes in my AT, I had one puncture, which I think was caused by a defective tyre pressure sensor, causing the pressure to drop too low and then I suffered a snake bite.

It might sound silly, but a flat tyre often adds to the adventure for me.

I would personally never consider an upgrade to tubeless on my AT.  20 Minutes out of my life for a tube change doesn’t warrant the cost to me.

Just wait for the day that a tubeless tyre can’t be plugged and you have to de-bead it, put a tube in to get you home and you are not used to it.  It will make you wish you got used to tube tyres.

Day 8: Oudtshoorn, Swartberg Pass (183km)

The day started with a briefing by the 3 HRC riders; Jean-Michel Bayle, Joan Barreda and Ignacius Cornejo.

They gave the riders a run down on various aspects of body positioning, braking and general skills.  Each one of them in a different language.  It was truly a privilege to be in their company.

And then Hardy, together with the Honda Europe guys somehow volunteered me to show them the correct way of picking up the bike in the event it being dropped.  No pressure!  In front of these legends!

I can not describe what goes through your head during this process.  Will these rugby weakened knees of mine even let me pick up the bike?  Will I moer it over to the other side once its up?  The options of failure is endless!

Anyway, all went relatively well and then ........

Jean-Michel Bayle approaches us and thank me for the demonstration and more or less in his words:  “Thanks for the demonstration.  I never knew how to pick up the bike, because I’ve never had to put it down.”

Well Mr Bayle, I’ve had my fair share of practice.

And then we were off, Joan Barreda leading.

We didn’t see much of the riders until the coffee stop, which was just below the view point on Swartberg Pass.

The weather didn’t play ball and it was a pity the foreigners couldn’t see Swartberg in all its glory.

Hardy and Joan in conversation.

Once back at Buffelsdrift Game lodge just outside Oudtshoorn, the HRC riders went for a filming/photo shoot and our work started.

We had about 35 bikes to service and plenty of tyres to change.  We split the team with Hardy and Janco on tyre duty and me and Oom Bonnie doing the oil services.  I think Hardy and Janco drew the shortest end of the stick here.  (Sorry no photos of the work undertaken)

Day 9: Oudtshoorn to Montagu (280km)

We left Oudtshoorn with the bikes all having some fresh oil and new tyres on those that needed them.

Unfortunately Joan Barreda and Ignacio Cornejo would leave the group again due to commitments in another part of the world.

We were still carrying the bike of the fallen journalist on the back of the trailer.  We now needed to add the bikes of the 2 HRC riders plus the main marshall, Erick Courly’s bike.

On the very first day another journalist rode into him and his leg/calve was in bad shape.  He was in no state to ride, even for a tough as nails toppie that he is.

A few calls later and a bike swop or two, we managed to lighten our load by leaving two Honda SA bikes in Oudtshoorn, to be collected by Oom Hans and his friendly staff from Honda Wing George.

And off we went on Route 62.  It was an overcast day with imminent rain.

A quick stop in Barrydale and then the formal stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop.

This day also served as a reminder of the wonderful Wilddog network of ours.  Due to servicing all the bikes the previous day, we had a lot of dirty oil to get rid of.  We had no time to do so and hence had to travel with it the next day.

A quick call to @ChrisL - DUSTRIDERS  and he managed to send me @Bokveld ‘s number.  Having met Oom Kallie only once at the WC Bash, he was more than willing to assist.  A couple of minutes later he phoned back with the contact details of a friend where we could dispose of all the old oil.  Got to love this forum!  (Oom Kallie, ek belowe om volgende keer te kom blad skud as ek weer daar deur kom.  Tyd was maar net nie aan ons kant die keer nie, maar nogmaals baie dankie.)

Only one puncture repair for the day after the lunch stop and everyone got to Avalon Springs on the outskirts of Montagu wet, but unscathed.

Day 10: Montagu - Kleinmond (364.7km)

Since arriving in Montagu and right through the night, it was raining heavily intermittently.  We had our concerns with some of the roads planned for the route but the R&D team decided that it’s part of the adventure.

By now @ChrisL - DUSTRIDERS  and @Rossdog was keeping us updated with the weather in both the Malgas area and Agulhas.

We left Montagu on the R62, through the old fort and turned left on the R60 towards Swellendam.

I was quite relieved that we didn’t travel through Ashton.  Many moons ago my younger sister lived there and it was not a bad little town.  Nowadays it’s a bit of a shit hole with a disgraceful display of construction works throughout the town, especially the (in my opinion unnecessary) monstrosity of a bridge that never gets finished.

From Swellendam it was a short stint on the N2 and we turned right at Buffeljags towards Malgas.  4Km later the gravel started as we turned left.

We were quite surprised with the road condition given the amount of rain that fell.  We reached the ferry (and coffee stop) without incident.

It was great to see Chris and Amanda there supporting the event on behalf of Enduristan. Enduristan was one of the sponsors and the Dustriders team were there with banners and a warm welcome.  One of the marshalls from Ride & Drive, Alessio Rimoldi, is also a distributor of Enduristan in Italy.

Slowly everyone started making their way across the ferry.  The rain was still staying away and everyone was excited to add a ferry crossing to their adventure.

Roughly a 100km later everyone reached Agulhas without incident.  After refueling in Struisbaai, this was where everyone had lunch.  After a circle route around the lighthouse, ship wreck and of course the most southern tip of Africa.

On our arrival at the lunch stop, we had to first do some repairs to the rear luggage rack of one of the bikes.  It was dropped and somehow broke the whole rack in half.  Probably caused by the panniers.  Anyway, after a bit of stripping, pulling and a couple of cable ties, it was ready again.

We had time for a very quick lunch and then waited close to the lighthouse for some of the guys that decided on a last visit to the famous place where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

This is also where I had the privilege of meeting Rossdog for the first time.  We’ve spoken so many times over the phone and it was great to finally put a name to the face.  Our conversation was long from finished when we were interrupted with a message of a flat wheel.  Next time Ross.

We raced to where assistance was needed to only find that the wrong information was given.  We were notified that the rider is just as you enter the next gravel road, but in reality, it was only the second section of gravel road.  We had about 55km to cover before we would reach him.

So off we went, now on properly wet and slippery gravel roads, through the little town of Elim.  We finally got to him and was elated to see that it was one of the very few bikes with a center stand.  This made the puncture repair, caused by a nail, a quick and easy task.

The rest of the day went incident free and we reached Arabella as the sun was breaking through the clouds.

Day 11:  Kleinmond to Cape Town (340km)

Arabella is certainly a stunning place and before we left, I had a chance to take a couple of pictures.

Incidentally, the golf course was designed by  the well known Peter Matkovich.  Matkovitch & Hayes was a specialist golf course design and construction company, bought out by WBHO circa 2005, when golf courses and associated estates were booming.  (The Hayes part of the company was of course the well known commentator, presenter and professional golfer Dale Hayes). I did a lot of work with them at the time.

We set off hugging the coastline past Betty’s Bay, Rooi Els and made a couple of stops above Kogelbaai etc.  It was sad to see the devastation still obvious from the recent fires in Betty’s Bay.  The area however brought back some fond memories of a time we used to travel this piece of coast up and down for the best wave to surf.  Depending on the wind and swell direction, there was always a spot to find a good wave.

From Gordon’s Bay we headed towards Firlands and onto the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass.  At Botrivier we got onto the gravel road and headed towards Villiersdorp.  Mid way on the gravel road was a quick coffee stop.

It was here that Hardy decided to have some fun on the back of Janco’s bus.

Janco returned the favor by writing ‘Gay love’ on the back of Hardy’s VX.  What he didn’t realize is that Hardy added Janco’s cellphone number to the bottom of this writing again. . I got way with nothing, but not for long .......

With the front runners that already left, we had a chance to have a chat with Jean-Michel.  With us sweeping the whole time, our interaction time was limited to the few stops and maybe at night.  We also didn’t see much of the riding going on.  I took the opportunity and asked him if he would entertain us with a quick wheelie, to which he responded ‘Anytime’.

Poetry in motion .....

Due to the level of the Theewaterskloof dam still very low, there was ample sand for some of the guys brave enough to go for a quick play.

The rest of the day, towards Paarl on the R45 and back on the N1 until finally arriving at the Sun Square hotel in Cape Town, all went according to plan.

Along the way we also had a chance to get a pic of the total compliment of backup vehicles.

Day 12: Cape Town - The last day (150km)

The morning started with a little bit of chaos.  Whilst I truly enjoy the Tripy II navigation system, it provides you with one screen at a time.  Once you’ve adhered to the specific instructions on the screen and, for instance made the turn, it moves on to the next screen or tulip.  It works very well when you have a bit of distance to cover between instructions, but when you have turns in short succession and lane selection becomes important, like in Cape Town city centre, it is easy to miss a turn.

Having grown up and studied in Cape Town and surrounds made it easy for me, but being a foreigner with the Tripy being the only guide, made for a couple of guys veering off in different directions.  It was however short lived and everyone was quickly back on track.

It was one of those days where everything worked in our favor.  No incidents to attend to and the weather was perfect, creating a magnificent display of one of the most beautiful parts SA had on offer.  You could see that our foreign visitors were truly in awe of the South African beauty.

And of course I had to get a pic of the Cruiser, which I was very fond of by now.

Lunch was at the Black Marlin and the baboons were playing havoc, nonchalantly stealing food left, right and center.  Despite this, the guys were all in good spirit.

It’s all over - Packing up.

After a great closing dinner at a place called Africa Café, we retired to bed, leaving the guests to feast on some traditional African hospitality.

The next morning we started transporting bikes to the Bidvest SACD where the disassembling would start.  It was again screens, mirrors and panniers off, batteries disconnected and making sure all bikes were properly crated, ready for shipment back to Europe.

We also had to drain each bike of the remaining fuel, for both safety reasons and weight saving.

Three days were set aside to prepare everything for shipment.  We were working vigorously, with everyone assigned a specific task.  This meant that after day 1, we were well ahead of schedule.

The next morning we finished the last of the bikes and by 11h00 we were on the road, heading back to Loxton.

Eric and his team finished the last of the equipment packing.  Between him and Phillipe, an astronomical amount of work was done in terms of logistics, setting up the coffee stations, banners, gazebos etc. during the trip.  Sterling guys that you definitely want on your side with such a trip!

As we drove home, the Karoo delivered a very suiting display of beauty to end a great trip.

And so another adventure comes to an end.  It was truly a privilege to be part of this amazing experience.

Until the next one.

Lyk my Hardy en sy span (jy inkluis) is absoluut eersteklas  :thumleft:

Dankie Kortbroek.  Specialised Adventures is verseker ‘n professionele maatskappy.  Ek het baie by Hardy en Janco geleer en dit was ‘n plesier om saam met hulle te werk.  ‘n Man kan maar gerus op een van hulle toere gaan, ‘n onvergeetlike avontuur gewaarborg.  :deal:

Great thanks for sharing, what was the feedback from the overseas visitors ? Certainly seems they had a very good time !

Jacques, without exception, everyone had a truly great time.  (OK, maybe not the journalist who fell himself into hospital the first day  :eek7:). A lot of them undertook to come back at some stage.

It also served as valuable reminder to me how amazing our country is, indirectly seeing it through the eyes of a tourist.  What also struck me was the fact that an adventure can certainly be had on the roads frequently traveled as well.

I did not want to interfere on Kobus's ride report. Let's just say compiling a report is one of the many talents I never got.

For the guys and girls that might have followed this RR, herewith a bit about the writer of this report.

I met Kobus Myburgh on Quest 2017 Boot Camp, where he was selected to join us in Namibia. He and Gerrit du Toit made up Team 10
They were one of the teams that the crew called "bullets" when we discussed the contestants in the evenings.
I approached Kobus in 2018 to become part of the crew, together with Karoo Kid, and Scrat. Probably one of my better decisions ever.
Kobus and myself became good friends during this time and it was an easy call to make when I needed another crew member for Adventure Roads.

Kobus, I have a world of respect for your work ethics, attention to detail, your judgement, your fairness, and the difference you make in other people's lives.
Thanks boet - You are a rock.
Hardy

Thanks for a great trip report and especially for taking the time and making the effort to keep it rolling, even when time was in short supply. Appreciated for sure. The photos are superb !

Could not agree more. One hell of a solid citizen, gentleman and someone you would like with you when the going gets tough.
