Title: Rockfox Adventure Travels
Post by: Weedkiller - Adie on March 23, 2019, 01:25:44 pm
I am slowly getting the hang of the video thing under the belt and thought it would be appropriate to share my travels with other like minded souls that might not follow my other escapades with all things technical here: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=226149.0

Just some background.
I do most (all) video with a hand held Sony actioncam.  I do have close to 1Tb video's over more than 40 000km that still need to be edited.  (Hope I dont die soon)  the beauty of the handheld camera is that more than 90% of my video footage is usable which makes editing a breeze.  Since I now got proper editing software and the sound almost sorted the big job to work through all the footage will start soon.

This is the first vid with sound - wrong town etc etc but it is a start.

I defenately will need to get a "mounted" camera as well as it is not worth the risk to do single hand technical stuff.

The youtube channel got some other video's as well https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC77nA7ja6Dy3rHr-0hITziQ

A little snippet that were left behind in the Donkieskraal trip
;
After the harvest the over ripe and fruit fly infected fruit fruit are left to rot and for compost for the next planting cycle.  The air had a 'frot' smell to it,  video just before the Bergriver crossing.

How the cantaloupe melon received it’s name spanspek

Lady Juana Maria Smith loved and was loved wherever she went. Those who met her on her adventuresome path of life at the side of her beloved husband were enchanted. In South Africa her memory even lives on in the name of a fruit: the cantaloupe or rock melon is called spanspek in South Africa.

Lady Juana’s husband, Sir Henry Smith (who preferred to be called Harry), served the British crown as governor of the Cape Province, where he and his wife enjoyed great popularity with the Xhosa as well as the Boers. According to legend from the couple’s South African years Sir Harry loved bacon and eggs for breakfast. Lady Juana, on the other hand, didn’t like bacon and preferred cantaloupe melons. In the Smith household these melons were soon known as the ‘Spanish bacon’, or ‘die Spaans se spek’ in Afrikaans. Apparently this is how this particular type of melon got the name ‘spanspek’ in South Africa.

Thanks BUT - me and the butt's

This talking thing is not really me.  I sound TOTALLY different in real life and also use different syntax, but working on it.
One thing I decided was not to make the talking 'too professional' I am a dwep and it must sound like a dwep.  :peepwall:

Also, I decided not to do any helmet mount camera. (this is also now illegal in motorsport) MY main motivation is firstly the limited view of any helmet cam.  I hate the 'just look ahead' video's out there cos I want to see more of the scenery.  I really only need to solve the technical stuff where I can not ride one handed.

I bought a Gimbal for the actioncam and finally found the spot where I want to mount it.  It will be ONE mount that can do forward, rotate, sideways and even selfie clips.  Will add it project to my other fread soon.

Ok, it seems as if the gimbal and shock mount on the bike would work.  I just need to manufacture the attachment plates to mount the unit to the frame.

Will test tomorrow afternoon before the next trip this weekend.

Camera setup K@K.  quality is good but it is WAAIII to complex for the 20seconds I normally miss where it is to dangerous to ride with one hand.

Another weekend away wif friends.  This trip will be a tree part series.

Just for info.
As I am still learning the ropes of the editing program I timed how long it took to do this video and was amased to find the total time (including experimenting and updating the voice recorder, making coffee) to be 5 hours.
Prev it went much quicker.  I also think I had too many clips of the tar section up du Toits due to the rain. (We do not get much of that here in the Cape.)

A few snips of day one and two of a 8 day CapeTown to Orania - VanZylsrus - Verneukpan - Pella into Nam and back at Ongeluksnek then inland down to Skaapstad.

Pics. Day one to Sutherland and day two to Vosburg  Day two rained most of the day and I had to do 400 km.  (Took shelter next to derelict farmhouse for 2 hours befor the fun and games continued.

Videos to follow soon.

I will just post this one.

Dont ask what happened.  I DONT KNOW. The GPS indicated that I was slowing down - last reading 47kph and 77m later 0kph.  I was slowing down as the car tracks indicated some snotty patches ahead.

All I can think is that there was a rock underneath the mud that jerked the front wheel to full left lock and then the rear end went flying and overtook the front.

A bit of a stiff left ankle is the only 'damage'.

All I can say it was a HELLUVA trip getting here in three days of rain.

Ok, so everything was delayed and the return did not go via Verneukpa, Pella......

Gisteraand weer my pelle by Bike X Cape in Tankwa gekry.

Paar brokkies inligting.

Pic 1.  Op roete (Son, Maan en Dinsdag) 1020 km

Pic 2. Vic West tot amper by Loxton.  Omtrent 30odd km twee keer by onbegaanbare paaie gekom en moes omdraai.

Pic 3. Terug roete tot by Bike X in Tankwa 819 km

Sal more die video begin edit.

About the off.
I looked at the pic again and at the end it was caused by LACK OF CONCENTRATION and maybe a bit of speed.

The sun was out, the road was wide and in good quality so I just relaxed. period.

Ok, DAY 4 returning back to Cape Town from Orania.

The original plan, no the ORIGINAL original plan was to go west from Orania towards Pela via van Zylsrus.  This leg had to be cut out due to the fact that I stayed much longer at the plant to complete some extra work and the ankle,  It was quite a mission the get the boot over the swollen foot.

The revised trip was zig zagging back to Cape Town via vic West, Fraserburg, Middelpos and Tankwa Karoo.  This included a surprise meetup with my friends at Bike X to surprise Michelle.  Due to delays Friday I only left Orania after 1 pm for Fraserburg  on the planned 460km all gravel stretch.  As this was not a race I decided to sleep in Vic West and then leave early (net na die mossies gepoep het) to make up some time.  A nice relaxed evening in Vic West was good for body and soul.

The road for the day was typical Karoo, flat and fast with an average moving speed of almost 90kph.

enjoy

Day 5. Vic West to Bike X Tankwa.

I did split this leg into two videos to make it more manageable etc.  Although it was 4 days after the rains there was still lots of water in the road.  As there was nothing high to mount the camera to I could not video some of the real hectic crossings.  I will have to carry a light tripod of some sorts with in the future.

Namibia trip Day 2.

Had to visit Midas in Upington for another Bosch pump.  Hopefully this will be the last one as I replaced the controller that was periodically acting up. Just in case Ill carry a spare under the seat as these pumps do not like to run at full pressure for more than 400km.

Lag partykeer lekker as ek die woorde so opmors. (Spreek altyd Tankwa snaaks uit.  :xxbah: )

Dankie in elk geval.  Ek geniet altyd kretiek want dit kan net die produk verbeter as dit by die 'tema' inpas.

In my search to give better content I tried something new in this episode. Still need to do a lot of work around the voice over.  :-[  But as I always said, if it was easy everyone would do it.

Any feedback is welcome.

** Edit **
Looking at it again on the big screen I did notice the fading from scene to scene was actually getting annoying.  Will have to look at other options as well.

I do not like watching bike tour videos as it's almost inevitably a long road being filmed.  Your last video is a bit of an exception, as quite a few things are added to hold the viewers attention, like the

aerial town shots, and ifo pieces.  The way you talk on the video also, for me, holds a bit of attraction. It is not the often found polished and smooth pro voice-over, but . a geniune one.

And then looking at the quality it would be better to use the screen grabber (Icecream) instead of pointing a camera at the screen.

OK, Namibia is done and dusted.  I can now start with the PE trip (5 days travelling)  I will make separate video's for Antoniesberg, Attekwas Oxwagon trail and Zuurberg in Addo as they were just to intense to be 'hidden' in the general trips.

Oxwagon trail from the R327 to Bonniedale holiday farm where the real Attekwas Pass starts. The Attekwas section is where the mountain bike race go through and is not possible with a big bike.  I think the section through the state forest is closed at the moment.

Looking at the video again the helmet cam section is probably a bit long. I am constantly expecting something new when watching a travel video and here it did not happen  :(

Interesting confusion on the GROOTRIVIERPOORT part.  The 'poort' in the case of Antoniesberg is actually only the crossing over the Grootrivier itself.  the REAL Grootrivier poort was built by Thomas Bain and is the eastern part of the BAVIAANSKLOOF - Not the whole thing.

Some other interesting info, there was TWO Bain's (Father and Son) who built passes in SA.  https://www.mountainpassessouthafrica.co.za/find-a-pass/item/716-the-bain-legacy.html

*****
When Thomas and Andrew Bain commenced working for the Central Road Board there were only three engineered mountain passes in the country, one of which Andrew had built. Andrew was responsible for seven major passes, and Thomas for twenty six. Thomas was responsible for 560 miles of major road construction which included minor passes, as also geological investigations, dams and other water supply works.
*****

From Mountainpasses of South Africa.

My version to follow soon.

*** For those who do not follow my other fred ***

It is time I complete my trip reports they are now queuing up :(

This trip was to see how SONDES will handle tom technical rocky tracks that I normally encounter on my solo trips.  I have been to the Grabouw forest area before so had a good idea of what to expect.  This time I also decided to do the more technical track at the top.  There are actually a few tracks where I turned around with LAWA (800GS) as I was not comfortable doing them alone.

THIS TIME IT WAS A BLAST.  The suspension is NOT a patch against the 800 which is not the best either but it actually handled everything quite well.  I still need to get used to the 'koekroller' front wheel that 'jump' over the obstacles with the much bigger approach angle.

Apologies for the 'fuzzy' image quality, something must have happened on the prev trip as the camera lens protector is 'chafed' right in the center.

The next test for SONDES will be up du TOITS via the forestry gravel tracks that joins the tar right at the top and the railway line between Wolseley and Gouda.  There are sections that is doable and sections that will be dead ends but that is what I want to explore.

This time I took the little ZONTES on some REAL sand roads on my way to Clanwilliam (Boegoeberg 4x4 campsite)

I must say it was quite a JOL.  I specifically picked this bike that, other than the looks, it is not pretending to be an offroad capable machine.  NO IT IS JUST A COMMUTER that can also handle smooth gravel.

Day 2 with the 19" front.  I did this same sandy track few times with both the 800 and Small Lawa with the 17" front and factory tires.  I am still a sh1t sand rider.  For some reason I just lost my mojo with sand and actually ride too slow.

Enjoy.

Day 3. Biedouw to Cape Town via Eselbank.  The 19" front made a massive difference to the general handling of the bike.

Now I need to complete the Cape Town Beitbridge trip.

Lyk my jy is nie skaam nie!

So ek eintlik eers so Sept 2020 weer begin ry.

Dankie,

Elke keer as 'n video klaar is wonder ek wie gaan my praat foute optel.  >:D Ek is soos ek is en doen soos ek doen.  :pot:
Beplan so 3000km meestal grondpad (of sandpad in die wereld)
