Title: Oubonesís journey via Kaokoland to a new life!
Post by: Oubones on April 28, 2019, 08:10:20 pm
This RR is long overdue in its writing as this journey actually started many years ago when I was in the Karoo for a few years.
Those of you that like to just watch pictures will not enjoy this RR as this is a deep story! My phone with most of my pics on got donated to Nam on this journey so pics are few.
Johan @Dorsland brought the smells and taste of the Karoo with its lot off nothing back to my memory with his thread about his farming!
@hardy with the Quest 2017 revived my lifelong want to go to Kaokoland and the nothing of the Namib region.
I had been caught up in a work situation where I did not get leave and ďselfishĒ money being in short supply.
When I got a call from Hardy about my enquiries about his trip to Kaokoland in April 2019 I made a decision that enough is enough and that I need to make a change!
I am going on this trip!
Very carefull consideration used! Ja, no bike, no money but determination!
So first is family conference, wife and the rest say YES!
Ok, so what now?
Andre had just withdrawn his Klr from sale and Hardy said that is the right bike for me to use so contact was made with Andre and the convincing started!
Long story short, few weeks later he deliveres the bike with some spares to me in Hammersdale from Gauteng ( including some extras) for a very good price. Ok credit card takes some damage but I smile.
I get on the bike for the first time and take it straight through roadworthy without even washing it! ( It was sweet)
I helped a guy years ago and out of the blue I get a call for banking details as he has gotten back on his feet and wants to send me some money! Deposit for the trip just fell out of the sky!
All off this happened in a period of a few weeks.
The bike pic and to be continued.

:peepwall:

Ok, so far so good!
I had a bike! Oops, passport had expired so in between work that had to be sorted! :dousing:
The Sand Monster was now the next challenge! Ok so here comes the Kzn bash!
Ja well, my son rode the bit off sand there with me on his NC750! Not much help for training for Kaokolands thick soft sand!
@dieseldawie and others there gave advice on the bike and riding so this became a combined effort! :thumleft:
@Pyscho Porra the crazy guy first let me ride his bike with his custom lowered seat on and then said we need to try it on my bike? Crazy! When changed and the test ride done, he says " yours mate" refuses any payment and says enjoy your trip!
Thank you guys for everything!
Plans were made to go to Richards Bay or up to Kosi Bay to Luke's lodge to go and ride sand, there I knew the right stuff was their as I had been through sections there with my old Vito! :patch:
Every time there is a new spanner in the works and till now I have not gotten around to it!
But I am going, ready or not!
November comes with another nasty!
Things at work have been going south for some time and I was informed that due to restructuring etc. my rates were under revision and would be cut so chances were good that I would join the unemployed!
December came and went with very little preparation getting done!
So 2019 started under a big dark cloud!
Hell or high water, OuBones is going on his first proper holiday since he got his first child in his house! He is turning 30 this year.
:peepwall:

Ok Next up is bike preparation!
Long range tank, eish nearly as much as what I paid for the bike so nope!
Boer maak 'n plan!
Some square tubing from my scrap pile and a piece of stainless expanded metal and sorted!
We can even take it off and use it for a braai grid if needed! :imaposer:
Thanks to Mooiboy Luke I got a rear tyre for cheap delivered!
That tyre did nearly 4000km before the trip and still has some thread left.
With the bike I also got an "in spec" clutch kit that also got fitted just before the trip.
Note the very sophisticated and very professional workshop used!
I dumped the bike on its side and voila!
Oil change and new filter as well as air filter serviced and the bike was ready!

Bike sorted, at least for half the trip! :peepwall:
Ja, I bought something new for her that really helped.
New 4mm Michelin tubes, no punctures on my whole trip and then had my old tube to help Gordon when he had one. :thumleft:
So I plan to go riding sand the weekend of 25 Feb as I now have an over supply of washers in the worshop about my lack of tackling the sand monster!
Ok, another spanner in the works! The son is off, it is raining on the North Coast and this grandfather is missing his grandkids!
Mud is just wet sand so off we go to Smithfield via the bottom of Lesotho!
At least I will get some seat time in and see how the body keeps up.
It was wet and nice to see the kids, but no sand riding!
Was great to see the kids though and know that their move went well and they have settled!
That was as ready as I could get, so all that was now needed was for me to be loaded from home and trailered to Loxton to join the rest and there we go!
Nope! :patch:
Title: Re: Oubonesís journey via Kaokoland to a new life!
Post by: Oubones on April 30, 2019, 06:00:23 am
That curve ball!
The fugly burns oil at 5000rpm, but around 4000rpm nothing. That is around 95km/h and also why I did the Lesotho loop with the dakar.
First curve ball is that things work out that I end up giving notice at work on 7 March to finish 5 April! Family conference and no I am still going to Kaokoland!
Ok!
Next curve ball, my transport is not available anymore due to unforseen circumstances and although Hardy offered to fly me up ( That is one hell of a guy) I think they would not be happy if I took my bike as luggage! :imaposer:
No problem, I will ride and meet up with Janco Monday morning somewhere on his way!
So Friday 5 April I finish work and the resposible thing, go on a bike trip!
That should get my head right, boy was I in for a surprise!
Big rush to pack as I now had a long slow trip ahead!
Saturday morning I get on one overloaded bike and set off!
Yip, in the rain! This trip I was so gratefull that I am waterproof as I kept on getting rained on!
I am just gratefull for the farmers!
First day was up Golden Gate, where I went and sat right up in the mountains for so long and thought about that.
Nature had its way with me and I got a restfullness in my heart just to get on the bike and get to a nice spot remembering that I want to take a photo and have the bike tip over when the sidestand just sank away!
First bike down for the trip, and not even there yet!
Sorry for no pics as yet!

Gues what?
First pic! Yes again! My Kaokoland trip is wet!

Ok, so I am a bit early and decide to go past Gariep dam on my way towards meeting Janco in Colesberg.
I am now nearly dry and decide to have a pitstop on the bridge crossing the river!
Pic 1: a longggg bridge!
Pic2: brown water and me having some water( clean ones, not mampoer Hardy)

I had some calls to check on my progress and Hardy explained on the one that there is a small road running paralel to the main road so I sent him this pic and message if this is the right road as it looks a bit small?
I then sat in the shade with a cooly and biltong and waited for his panic call!  :lol8: :sip:

It went something like this! ď You lost or took a wrong turn? Where are you?Ē
I left the sad place( the concentration camp where some off the children that died there had not even been named!)
Our country has a rich but sad history and after spending time there I can understand why my grandfather died seeing the British as the enemy. Luckily our people are good and we have moved on to a peacefull co-existance!
Pic1: Parked at Wimpy, nice brekkie there.
Pic2: One dirty Klr loaded with the other nice clean bikes!
Pic3: You guessed it, Loxton is wet!

The one you know went to my older brother and I now have a very clean 2007 model with al the bells and whistles.
It is too heavy and tall for the type off riding done on this trip.

Craig, you must be one of the few rooinekke that's willing to speak Afrikaans to a Boertjie....it's mostly the other way around! Respect! ;)

You remind me of Clint Eastwood. :o

Regarding Hennie....I did not end up riding with him that much...but observed his efforts in keeping the KLR running at camp. He did not have it easy in this respect. He completed every day though.  :thumleft:

The KLR is not the easiest bike for these conditions. Van Zyl's camp had the deepest sand I encountered on this trip, and it caught out Ian in spectacular fashion.

Hennie's skill with the KLR in sand impressed me, even more when I saw what front tyre he was running!

Hennie's effort is testamony that life is not only about work....but that one needs to get out and experience life....and not wait for one day....when you have the money....just close your eyes and do it! :thumleft:

Loxton: We offloaded here, loaded there, sorted luggage, talked and met new faces and had some nice food!
Around 9 we got to the B&B where we were sleeping and my lights were already on dim as I had had a hectic previous week and weekend.
A real emotional roller coaster ride!

Ok, so the long haul is about to start.
Had my coffee thinking eish!
Not even all the guys are here and this solo rider is going off with the biggest group he has ever ridden with on the longest trip he has done so far in an area he has never been to!
At least my back had been behaving and did not give me hassles even till now! :thumleft:
Pic 1: The Iveco! My favorite vehicle! Hehe, I got to ride in it with Hardy for the first part of the trip and it was nice to get to know the man ( I had never met him personally before) and as I am used to my vito it was also nice to be even higher!
That vehicle carried our whole camp! I quickly understood why we were limited in luggage!
It was also to prove dustproof for the whole trip!
Pic2: Long road ahead!
Pic3: Britstown, I did my matric in De Aar close to there and thoughts off my youth went through my head as we passed there.
Pic4: Our convoy at one off the rest stops
Pic5: Chantall and Diesel in the cruiser, that dog was just amazing! By Britstown my dog would have eaten up the seats and climbed out the window! Diesel just lay on his nice bed and chilled!
Pic6: There are some serious birdnests on the old telephone poles in the Northern Cape and South Namibia!

Interesting facts about those Social Weaver nests is that they are not only built for themselves but that they allow other birds to join their colony! So do they classify as hotels or communes? :ricky:
The SA pygmy falcon only nests on the weavers nests for its own!
Other finches etc also use them and even vultures, eagles and owls sometimes use the tops for their nests!

Pic2: Upington with a lunch stop. Diesel in the shade and Hardy and Gordon solving the worlds problems! :peepwall:
Pic3: The border! Running behind scedule but going allright even though it seems that the rules are determined by who is on duty and what side of the bed he got out off, but it is Africa!

Not true - Oubones hi-jacked the Iveco and drove it like a pro. The fact that Oubones does have a Code 14 licence proved very useful, and I could see that he was no amateur behind the wheel. Thanks Hennie, I was dead tired and you really saved the day there.
I believe most people reading this thread has exactly the opposite idea of Oubones - like I had....
This guy has the general knowledge of an Oxford lecturer and the keen spirit of a prom night virgin.
He guided his trusty KLR through very rough terrain with the patience of a South African taxpayer and never complained about anything.
The world has taken more than it's fair share of shots at this guy, and he is still smiling - Much respect Old Man

@ETS , lekker om jou te ontmoet en ja jy moet definitief so trip doen wanneer jou been reg is!
Mense julle moet nog net so bietjie aanhou dan sal die storie weer spoed kry!
