Title: Motorcycle phone mount se moer
Post by: Offroadrider on May 22, 2019, 03:45:57 pm
A few months ago I needed a new phone mount as I was sick of the over priced motorcycle specific shit that causes your phone to heat up and is generally bigger than a top box and panniers combined, so took to takealot to see what they had in the bicycle department,  R399 for a phone setup that has worked better than anything I have owned before.

Funny enough, I looked at that as well - decided it was too flimsy where it attached to the bars - guess I was wrong!''

Bought this instead

It's seriously solid as a barn door, and you can twist it to any angle,, one of the best purchases I have made for my bike in  many years

If your phone falls out of this thing I rate you have ridden under a truck, 200km of wash board riding a couple of weeks ago and nothing moved

Just one question.....err......why?

Some people use motorcycles to go places.

It is handy for navigation using Google maps or some other navigation software.

I have been looking for a good sturdy mount. Having to memorize a route fully before setting of is getting old.

Net so. Google maps and also MAPS.ME for total off-line navigation. Geo-Tracker to track new routes. All on the phone.

just bought the KTM powerparts bracket and case.
the bracket appears to bolt onto the handle bars as one would expect,  then on the back of the phone case there is an adaptor which mates with the phone case.
bracket R1100
phone case R600
unfortunately still on order,  and due to arrive with my akra and bash plate.
here's hoping their expensive powerparts solution works...

Iím with you on this one. Apart from heat, dust, water & vibration, my phoneís replacement price is double that of an expensive GPS unit which is designed to be exposed to elements, can be used with gloves and have proper routing and tracking features.

Some people use motorcycles to go places.

It is handy for navigation using Google maps or some other navigation software.

I have been looking for a good sturdy mount. Having to memorize a route fully before setting of is getting old.

Phones come with earphones.

If you using google maps there is someone inside the phone who shouts the directions at you just in case you too busy looking at the road to look at the screen  :imaposer:

The person inside the phone shouts so loud that it goes through the wires and into your ear, so all you have to do is turn left when they tell you to.

 :laughing4: :laughing4:

I joke around but honestly that is what I do.. punch in the address and put the phone in my pocket or backpack with one earphone in my ear.. follow the directions and OLE.. done.

Upon arriving in the UK, before I purchased the Zumo, I found this unit in an accessory shop.

Itís a rugged waterproof case with solid bracket compatible with Ram ball mounts. Can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The case clicks securely into the mount and has a sliding lock to prevent it coming loose.

Not sure if anyone in SA stocks these but can reccomend it if you want a solid mount that keeps your phone in one piece.

Manufactured by Tigra.

Edit: They manufacture a unit with wireless charging for the new models.

Looks very tough, and I'm sure if you tightened the screw with a vice grip you'd crush the phone, but does it cater for vibration and will it hold the phone when there's a jolt?

I use the Ram X-Mount with it's rubber stretch grip - taken it through Nam and Bots, and some of the Karoo's best and it holds my iPhone better than glue, even when I've dropped the bike.

Bought this one on eBay, was very cheap but took months to arrive in the post. Made of aluminium, turned it so that the phone sits horizontal. It has a big cross handle at the back that you turn to lock the slide in place, phone has never come loose even on dirt roads.

I had an HTC HD2, was a great fone, until I mounted it. Even on tar, after a few months the camera focus mechanism came loose and rattled around inside.
Although the construction of fones has been made more rugged over the years, it still isnt built for that.
Having said that, my soon to be useless brick Huawei fone has been mounted for a long time with no issues.

The new Samsung Phones, S9 and S10 have a very small mechanical iris that control the aperture. Now this is micro mechanisms. Personally I doubt it is made for vibrations

Funny enough, I looked at that as well - decided it was too flimsy where it attached to the bars - guess I was wrong!''

Bought this instead

OK - installed mine eventually - the one I posted on page 1 - and there's a problem.......

The mount is fine, but when the phone is in the holder, one of the 4 fingers pushes the volume button, which, when held down, activates an emergency signal of some sort....... If you move the phone to avoid the buttons, its not centered in the holder - not critical, but it looks kak.....

Not sure if it is the same thing ?

takealot rook 'n man

only thing is i can collect for free from takealot - geewiz shipping etc ends up adding to the price

Just mailed them. R49 delivered to my door for 2 units
Even with delivery, geewiz is cheaper than takealot. Bought one tonight. Including postage, R217

Some feedback

Works like a charm (On road that is)

I fiddled with the rubbers to make it fit on the center of the handlebars.  No vibrations, I can see clearly on the screen (even read on it while riding)

I will probably play it safe and only stick to road use for now since I am using my day to day phone atm.

Anyway, good buy.

Thx @Offroadrider

My Blackview has spent days in full sun under a windscreen in Namibia, Kalahari and Richtersveld on super hot days and haven't overheated yet.

@Kortbroek, what is the screen visibility like in the sun?

That the one my son. And all I did was run a cable tie around the back to ensure it doesn't ever fall off or rattle loose. For R195 it is a cool little thing and works perfectly for a guy like me.

You kidding?
High frequency vibrations of a handlebar-mount will ruin anything that moves or can move, hence a focusing lens system also.
A cellphone is made and designed for your pocket or hand, by definition self-dampening environments, and it's a wonder that most will survive a normal drop.
Some will last shorter (I hear iPhones are good with this) and some will last longer, but bet your bottom dollar they will eventually break when regularly mounted on vibrating handlebars!
Best is to look for clamps which have rubber mounts or some kind of dampening, and these all-aluminium things here don't have anything of this.
But hey, it's your phone so....

Useful info on GPS mounts.
From personal experience I have found those aluminium billet mounts don't work for my garmin etrax 10 & 20, due to vibration (especially on a Raptor 700) they switch off and have seen this on many bikes too. Tried packing the batteries with press stick, paper and wiring straight to bike battery but they still switch off, however not when in your pocket or hydration pack. It is simply vibration between the battery holder and brain.
Last years event and with scouting we tested there  silicone J mounts with no problem at all, they are definitely worth it. Available for Etrax double or single holder & Oregan models
You can purchase from Lizelle    debtors@curtismobile.co.za

Maybe a RAM mount will help as there is some distance to absorb the vibration.

Turns out Toys2Go makes some nice soft luggage products as well, I didn't know that.
Bought this, a small handlebar bag for a few tools plus a pouch for a phone which faces you like the dash does, ideal when using the GPS.
Zero hard mounts as the material dampens high frequency vibrations, hence even my iPhone phone should last.
2 zippers to open, 4 velcro straps to remove the bag, PVC-lined which looks splash-proof to me, black or blue, a handy thing to have.
