So okay, you'll either like the bike or you won't, but there's a sick irony in the commentary by the BMW design chief.

"These days it's easy to make something complicated, but very difficult to make it simple. And simple is what many buyers want."

Isn't that sad?

LOL well I popped in for my annual check-in, saw the bike being discussed, and thought I'd chime in.

It is pretty special though. Seeing it in the flesh was a real treat, it's loaded with very nice touches and details.

I wouldn't be ashamed to ride that, looks so clean and minimalist.

Very nice indeed. My only concern is that BMW concepts that get translated to production loses the plot sometimes, especially with bold "new" designs.

Remember the Concept 101? That was a beat, but in production version (K1600B) not so much:

One case where the production bike was far better than the concept!

With the R18 it seems like the air box is likely to spoil the look unless the designers can do something clever, and I wonder whether 'they' will allow BMW to get away with the open rotating shaft which is a visual feature of the design.

Changes are inevitable as manufacturers take a bike from concept to something they can homologate and sell to the masses.

From the Concept 101 to the K1600B, you can see a more practical fairing, more ground clearance, and less fancy finishes that will cost more to produce / require more maintenance.

But I have it straight from the horses mouth that a lot of good stuff on the R18 will stay. The frame and motor are both pretty much production ready, and even that sweet exposed drive shaft isn't going to change. Things like the airbox and extra wiring can be expected, along with mirrors and a license plate bracket that extends past the back wheel. It's unavoidable, especially in Europe... but the good news is you can take it all off again!

Harley does not sell motorcycles.... i guess BMW does not either these days.

For all the harley detractors , its ironic to see most of the big brands build substitutes to attract the cruiser guy money....

If i had the cash , i would buy this BMW, but i have not the cash nor the space.

wow, that is awesome pricing... well done to BMW ZA

Edit: i went to the bmw ZA website, price is indicated but you cant actually buy one yet.

Once its available and if one can get the base model for 299k i will be surprised. Looking at the list of extras a lot of items are extra so it will be a very basic model at 299k. Everything is extra.
Title: Re: BMW R18
Post by: the_wes on April 08, 2020, 12:23:52 pm
If I'm reading the website correctly, that R299 900 seems to be for the 'First Edition' model, which includes extra chrome trim, pin stripes, etc. So most of what you see is in the price.

Adaptive headlight, heated grips and reverse feature all cost extra. BMW South Africa are in habit of speccing things like this out the box, if they do, then it'll deffos come in at more than the currently listed price.

R300 000 is one helluva lot of money for a bike that will do nothing really well at all.

A superbike handles incredibly well, it performs well and it stops well.

A adventure bike does tar and dirt fairly well.

What does this thing do?

Just cruise?

Supersizing, the Yank way.

Very reasonable pricing!

Then perhaps a small reminder for those already tipping on the fence is in order:
Those bikes in the country now (ie stock!) and on special now will be extraordinarily cheap compared to those imported after this Lockdown, simply due to the ~40% weaker exchange rate we have had!

So, if you want one better want get now!

In my opinion - hideous in production form. The design concepts were much better looking, especially the second one.

But, like the design concepts, where do you put your feet ?
The cylinders are right where your feet should go on a cruiser styled bike. Look at the chap in the 1st concept pic.

But I don't think it's very comfortable to ride like that(legs forward) Not for long cruise anyway..

I don't get the excitement on start up it sounds like every other BMW boxer motor. It is not exactly a stirring sound like that of a V twin. Even a Hardley in all of its tribulations at least has a sound that stirs the soul.

I grew to the sounds of the Guzzi Le Mans in its various guises and the 900ss of my father or the 600 pantah of my mother. exciting. Her R100RS was a great bike for going to Durban on holiday but the sound could never be called stirring.

Seroiusly BMW motors even large ones sound dull.

Like halved a Beetle, sort of?

Also a public liability, possibly, if you consider that every few milliseconds a piston is heading outward on it's compression/exhaust strokes at high speed. What if that pod goes, or the conrod breaks? :deal:

Rather get a foot knocked off than your balls from a V.

:imaposer: :imaposer: It will have to be a Ducati or KTM, a Harley piston will lose momentum 4 inches out the barrel.

Does look a bit cramped. I'm not a cruiser guy, also not tall, but the dichotomy of a cruiser-like seat and handlebar while having your knees propped into your face does seem uncomfortable, especially for spherically-shaped guys (like me).

R300 000 is one helluva lot of money for a bike that will do nothing really well at all.

A superbike handles incredibly well, it performs well and it stops well.

A adventure bike does tar and dirt fairly well.

What does this thing do?

Just cruise?

:sip: And, be,,,, well, not that attractive.

Supersizing, the Yank way.

Yes, not going.
I don't mind cruisers, they fit my 'athletic physique'.
But if I was in that market I would buy a HD Fatboy for less than half that price.

I was in Bavarian for some other business.
The COVID compliance officer asked me if I was going to the reveal.
First I had heard of it.
I went to the spot but was stopped by a guy from Motorrad SA who asked where I was going.
I said I wanted to go to The Reveal.
He said it was "invitation only" and was I on his list?
I said "No - can I get onto the list?"

He took one look at me in my T-shirt, shorts and sandals and did nothing.
I spotted the somebody I knew from the dealership and asked him.
He apologised and said it was a Motorrad SA event outside his influence or control..
So I bought the parts I needed, had coffee with a friend there and left.

The R18 will NOT be on my Santa shopping list, Motorrad SA (and yes, I CAN afford to buy one!)
Your marketing strategy on this one sucks !

Did ask but didn't  really pay attention to the reply, somehow remember in the vicinity of R340k base price, they received their stock yesterday and I was told that they already sold (and paid for)  a few units

I'd be repetitively pessimistic if I pay over 200k for a bike and I have to overhaul it's clutch, and claim the same kak shock.
