A 690/701 with rally kit is the best. I have had 2 x 990's, 1190 R, 1200 GS and a 690 with an Omega kit.
I will never go over 700 cc again.

i agree, not much to choose between the two, but the 690/701 is the best.
you do not need all the extra crap that people love to paste on it.
and, they are reliable, you only get lazy owners.

Would it make sense to own a 950, 690 and 500?

I have a 950 and a 500, but sometimes find that there are rides that require something in between.

But then, if you have all three, and you have a slightly awkward ride where you need less weight than the 950, more comfort than the 690... would it not make sense to also have a 790?

Apart from Apex vs XPlor, the Motard has dual discs and different claipers if I am not mistaken so no not a straight swop. But you can get motard wheel set for the enduro

It is White - the new orange. Capische.

PS Oh and still better suspension - they both now have WP Xplor forks and PDS but the KTM only has 250mm travel and the 701 has 275mm. Not sure what this shortass thing is with KTM these days?   ???

Then what is the 701?

Motor-wise yes, but the new 690 has more electronics.
My hunch is the 690's now a bit better than the 701 but the looks of the latter I like more.

And the SM won't be an Enduro by slapping on some wheels!
Indeed the frame's a tad different but also the suspension, not the same at all.
Hey, there's a reason they sell 2 of 'em, they both have their own purpose.

Add my vote to the "690 is the best adventure bike on the planet".

We've just returned from 3 back to back Kaokoland tours and I can't think of anything else that comes close.

On the long open tracks it's not the most comfy thing on the planet and on the rougher bits like 'Robbies Pass' you need to mindful of all the torque but it handles both with ease and does the in-between stuff like no other bike.

Incedently we added Robbies Pass for the first time this year to our tour route and I was worried by all the talk of how tough it would be if you weren't on a 500/501 type bike. The 690's/701 cruised up the pass on a day we did 300km to finish at Kunene River Lodge. Only 1 of the 7 riders took some strain but considering he was suffering from a heavy bronchial infection and the temperature was mid 30's I wasn't surprised. The bikes cruised up.

What is the max. all day cruising speed on tar with the 701's?

We took the tar road back from the EC bash to make up time and cruised most of the way at about 125-130 on the 690.
I have the small screen on which helps a bit, but thats about the speed one can cruise before it becomes tiring from the wind.

I would imagine the setup like Big Dom has will be a lot more comfortable at cruising speed

Yeah the wind tires you out before the speed is an issue for the bike. With the rally kit on (good wind protection) I used to cruise 145 in comfort and the bike was just fine.

The bit that got me the most was when we hit a strong south easter and I got stuck behind a 4x4 towing a caravan. The turbulence behind him was really bad and struggled to keep it steady to pass him. He was cruising at 130 which made it even worse

I prefer touring at no more than 120kph anyway, and that makes the bike perfect for me. I do the same speed on the 1090 /1290's as well so what's the point of the bigger bike.
It's touring and I like looking around.

Most of the places I go you have to be careful of wild animals popping out from behind any bush or unexpected road hazards.

Same here. What helps with the 690/701 is that you know there is more in reserve if you do need to open up and pass a vehicle.

No need to worry about that. A 690 will keep up with your tracer up to 170

Apart from Apex vs XPlor, the Motard has dual discs and different claipers if I am not mistaken so no not a straight swop. But you can get motard wheel set for the enduro

Frame different if I recall - steering rake is different.

Somebody told me quite recently that the 690 was originally designed as a Super Motard and adapted into a Enduro and that is the reason it was never a great Enduro.

I owed the 690 SM, which was the first 690 released, so there might be something to this.

guys, I know a medium weight bike should be the best all round adventure bike but your pictures in this thread is disappointing.
You do not carry any point over, the roads in the pictures I could/and have done on big bikes, and would again choose the big comfortable bikes over the cramped 690.

Take your grand piano and shove it up your go 'play' in the technical. I have 250, 450, 610, 1000, and 1200 cc bikes ... they all have their place. I have taken a 1200cc where many have only dreamed of going but it is always a balancing act between 'talent' and bikes ability. This then becomes un-"comfortable" with the doctor and/or bank manager if/when you 'over-balance'  ::)  Far easier to take the correct weapon to the gunfight - you may get lucky with your Swiss Army knife and get a stab in but probably end up cutting your wrists later with the nail file.  :imaposer:

What is the max. all day cruising speed on tar with the 701's?

We took the tar road back from the EC bash to make up time and cruised most of the way at about 125-130 on the 690.
I have the small screen on which helps a bit, but thats about the speed one can cruise before it becomes tiring from the wind.

I would imagine the setup like Big Dom has will be a lot more comfortable at cruising speed

Yeah the wind tires you out before the speed is an issue for the bike. With the rally kit on (good wind protection) I used to cruise 145 in comfort and the bike was just fine.

Yes spot-on. You may not cruise all day at 160 in your Gomma Gomma Lazyboy but 140 is just fine and at least then when you get to some decent riding you can ride it without being pushed and tugged.

The other thing people also tend to think when looking at a photo is "That's nothing, I can ride that on a big bike". Now that may be true but where the big difference comes in is riding a long tech route, multiple days in a row. Not just one very short hard stint that nearly killed you on a big bike anyway

Don't get so sensitive, I am just asking for gunfight pics, not the tea party stuff where the 701 is actually the wrong choice of bike.

Nice one there Dwerg in the sand. I have watched those amageza clips often. I am definitely not at Kamanya level but also not very frightened by that sand, it's not that bad, I stay in the Kalahari. But then also, I fully realise I could do that for an hour and then I would be beat, definitely not for days.

Love to see these threads where someone enjoys their bike so much that it becomes ďThe best adventure/DS bike on the planet!Ē

Nothing wrong with it, but shouldnít  there be a further statement like:

..... for my type of riding, or;
..... in its modern day class.

Frankly, they have no competition in that market sector, or is there something Iím missing?  If thereís no competition, are they not both the best and the worst?

In the company of a GSA, AT etc. on a multi day gravel travel adventure, are they still the best?  Or, on a really technical ride, compared to the 500, still the best?  So it very much depends on your idea of adventure/DS riding?

My comments are not meant to be derogatory of the 690/701, rather light hearted banter.  I owned one and didnít enjoy it, although the niggles could all be addressed by throwing money at it, ie suspension etc.  My opinion was however restored in them on the recent Kaokoland trip and there was stages that I was longing to be on one.

Truth be told, the best adventure/DS bike on the planet is still the KTM 640 Adventure.  :pot:

Bit unfair to us lightbike brigade to post Kamanya and his tanker on here. I have never, and probably will never meet anyone in real life that is so able on a big bike.

Having said that, do not for one moment think that the GS will do the same, as the LC8 is just on another planet engine and chassis wise.

So you see, even among "big bikes" there are vast differences.

Of course, Kobus is correct in his post above, it's the combination of what suits each individual and our [most of us] desire to defend our riding choice that makes these "best bike for...." threads appear.

Personally, I love slower riding, I'll cruise all day at 110, and I'll sit in the saddle for hours on end, but I want the freedom to change course anywhere along a ride, into something very

technical if the chance presents itself, and a big motorcycle robs me of that.

I have never understood the thinking behind someone taking a GS1200 along a slightly difficult route, and then earns respect for it??

Is it not like a builder bragging that he does not use a wheelbarrow, he simply carries all the cement in his cupped hands?

Correct tools are there to make the job easier, and more enjoyable, not?

why not? He attempted and maybe succeeded at doing something difficult. Don't you congratulate someone that has done the comrades (or local parkrun) if it was a challenge for that guy? regardless if you could do better/more.
To commute with a bike 95% of the time and do very technical terrain for less than 1% of the time, its stupid to have a technical focussed bike, but he still got off the beaten track and got it dirty and himself challenged which is good.
The opposite of this is having a lifted bakkie with mud terrain tyres in spotless condition for town driving. this is the same as using that 690 as a daily but rarely seeing technical terrain. my dirty rundown rattling hatchback is parked next to a spotless kitted cruiser at this moment on the bad mine roads.

If I can add. I really like the pics by Noneking. In these discussions its always centred around how the bike can "also do 120kmph for the whole day" but there is never much focus on what is the actual positive things it can do. Up to those pics, a big bike would have been the better option. Actually it seems to me, half the people punting the smaller bikes rarely actually get them dirty, their bikes are spotless. Orange is the new black, or small is the new black, especially on the Wilddog forum.

Well I went from bigger (990 then AT) to the 690.
Its my every day ride, touring/playing all in one. As where the others.

I havent owned it long enough to compare them all out, but so far in my daily commute its a lot more fun and nimble.

I guess what makes me enjoy it more at the moment is having the comfort that if I see that little side road, I can take it and have a lighter more capable perhaps bike to do it on.
On the bigger bikes I would have probably avoided it. Or gone and really struggled

I even actually semi enjoyed riding sand the other day on the 690, which I hated on the heavier bikes.

But, this is me in my situation, with my skill level.

It's much less arduous to ride a 690 at 120 on a tar section than carry a GS1200 up Robbie's Pass.

In fact the tar bit on the 690 is also fun.

My first open road outing on the 690 I thought. mm.. ok I am going to miss the big bike. Would have cruised so easily at 120-130 and not do it at a slower pace than I am doing now.

Then I checked the speedo and realised ok.. wait I am going at 130 already.

I have a GSA that was perfectly suited to my last 8000km up and down Namibia on the B, C & D roads - made short work of the long distances on dirt, was the best bike by far for that trip...

I also have a 650 X-Challenge that is THE perfect bike for my Sunday morning blast around the koppies of the Deep South, it cruises down there at 120 on the highway too - Perfect!!

And I wouldnt do the opposite trips on either bike - although to be fair, the 650 would have handled the nam trip better than the 1200 in the koppies....

Next I need a 450/500 to do some rock/sand work....

So for me, I am fortunate to be able to choose the bike for the PLANNED trip - no planning = 650

But thats just my take.....

It makes sense what you write. If I had the choice I would love to have two bikes.
Maybe a 990/AT along with the 690. Gives me some options when I do go on a trip.

But only able to have one bike, I am giving the 690 a try to see how it copes as a multipurpose machine

Just because your bike looks like it's run over a landmine doesn't mean a well looked after bike hasn't been places. Another two ticks for small bikes. a) Rough terrain is easier so drop it less often and b) They take less damage when they are dropped

I used to replace my bikes every 2 years but since buying my 690 (in 2014), I haven't felt the need to replace it with anything else. I'm very content with how it suits my kind of riding on varied terrain. I can ride it to work in the week, detour home via the local sand pit, then join the quarry gang on the weekends and strip it down and race the Tankwa Rally on it. Oh, and ride a cameraman around on the back at MTB events, enjoying the gnarly single track. But each to their own, if it's got 2 wheels then it's awesome  ;D

Cannot remember reading a RR about that? :peepwall: ;)

Yeah seems every single ride needs to be documented with pics of every event around these  parts for fame reasons.  :sip:

Something that's not been spoken to much in this conversation is the cost of "adventuring" with a big bike. Taking a big bike into highly technical places requires a very high tolerance for aesthetic damage. It gets prohibitively expensive real quick if you want the bike to still look like itís a high money bike.

I used to stick by the 950 as the ultimate adventure bike. But that's only because I was very willing to crash it AND it crashes really well.

These days, once I got the 525 and Iím older, I am more on the fence.

If I can only have one tool, I might go the bigger bike, but with the knowledge that I am not going to go everywhere I want.

If I go the smaller bike, I will have to be happy that the distances between towns grows by a large factor and tar is not fun anymore.

Itís a largely unsolvable puzzle trying to answer the question of whatís the Ultimate Adventure Bike? Mostly because itís not really about the bike, itís about us.

The ultimate adventure bike is the one that brings you back from the ultimate adventure. And if all you remember is the colour of the bike, so much the better.

It's much less arduous to ride a 690 at 120 on a tar section than carry a GS1200 up Robbie's Pass.

In fact the tar bit on the 690 is also fun.

You don't say I've worked on a few gearboxes where the oil won't be in the right place without the pump running, and just splashing oil over the gears is not going to get it where it needs to be.

In 1987 I towed a DR 500 to Namibia behind my bakkie. I took the chain off just to make sure no damage was done.

You don't say

It's a 2smoke with the wheel high up meaning all the oil sits right at the output shaft, it likely will submerge it.
Then also, the constant mesh gearbox will splash the oil everywhere, and this is all this gearbox gets when the engine is running... so it's the same.
Hence no problem.
Bit different than with a 4-stroke whereby the cranks drives the oilpump(s), ad then it also will depend on wetsump or drysump.
Besides, how do you take a riveted chain off?  ???

Didn't really want to get into this whole debate but I'm such a fan of the Husq 701 Enduro, I had to say something. I own a 701 and have recently acquired  KTM 790 Adventure R on which I've done close to 2500kms. So is the 701 the best adventure/DS bike on the planet? In my opinion, yes! It is just such an incredibly capable bike: astonishing engine ( I always find it hard to believe its single cylinder), wonderful suspension, amazing brakes, great gearbox perfectly suited to offroad riding, so light and manoeuverable. I've kitted it out for long adventures ( second fuel tank, giving range of plus 400kms, windscreen, rear luggage carrier, Cycra hand guards, Wings exhaust etc etc) and there's nowhere i wouldn't take this bike. The 790, great bike that it is, simply cannot compete offroad. Well how can it, being 60 kg heavier. But as usual its horses for courses. So if I'm doing short tar and long dirt, take the 701. and if I'm doing long tar and short dirt, take the 790.

Sorry, I meant the bike in the photo, which will not suffer any damage, unless it jumps into gear while you're towing it at 120kph. :eek7: :eek7: :eek7:

Back home after two days of LDBA black routes. Just amazed with the 701. Iíve done a lot of the routes on it before, but mostly it was slow going as we were recceíing the routes.

Yesterday I rode with Saay on 690 and @trevo on DRZ400. Pace was brisk and the 701 felt like an enduro machine on the challenging route. Granted there were 1290/1090/990 s on the route as well, but they just cannot ride at the same pace of technical terrain.

Very glad I came to my senses and decided to keep the 701.....

Noneking, where is all that riding happening?

Is it open terrain, I mean, can you legally ride there, and over how many square kilometres does it stretch?

I mean, is it a very big area that you can ride over freely?

Riding happening roughly in the Numbi area. There is a massive stretch of land (letís call it tribal land??) stretching from the Kruger Park Western fence in the east, to R40 West. Virtually no limitation on riding, apart from natural obstacles within the area.

Small rural communities and larger ďtownsĒ at regular interval.

I have no idea of the size of the area, but must be thousands of square kms.

@Just Blip It! Did more than 2000km on his 990 while reccíing the routes in the area

The area is also home to the annual Casterbridge enduro

In short, adv biking heaven!

We're extending the Rally class with a "Rally Light"  -  you can do it (for this year) - with a GPS, the only 2 REQUIREMENTS for this 2019, 1) your bike must be roadworthy, 2) it must have a 250 km fuel range.

For next year, to shrink the technology gap, the GPS will be replaced by an Andriod/IOS device, with proper electronic roadbook, like this:

(You need to, like with a normal roadbook, scroll the map up and down, bump the ICO up and down, as you get lost  :deal: )

It would definately lower the bar to entry for riders that is up to the challenge, but does not want to shell out the $$$ for full rally kit.
GPS is dead, the kit for "Rally Light"  cross-polinates to dual sport riding, i.e. you won't need to spend massively on kit just to partake in the adventure of rally.

Keep in mind, this is not doing a spectator route, this is riding on the track, same time, same distance, same, same as for the rally class, without having to built a rally bike.

I seem to remember @Kamanya had 2 iPhones with the ICO app for an Amageza one year - if it was him....?
This would be my route i think- the X-Challenge has a fuel cell on it already, good for around 300km.....

But back to the tread topic...690/701/PR7 - The best adventure/DS bike on the planet!!

They will all be able to do the Rally  :imaposer:  - it is not hugely technical (unless you go at real race speed), but navigation is demanding, as well as endurance.

If I was not so involved in the organization, it would be the one race I would do as I can do it on my D/S  :thumleft:

now the million $ question 2sd, you gonna ride the 701 from stellies to kruger?

It's done 30 000 kms since Oct. 2016, even with me not riding for 6 months, so Stellies to Kruger is small change. :ricky:

But if we pull together say, 4 guys, it's better to trailer.

Not everyone is as tough as 2StrokeDan. 8)
I'd be keen to join in on the action.....

On 2 separate Amagezas I used them for different purposes.

One was as a tracker, sent my position and speed real-time so long as I was in cell reception. It still recoded everything when I was out of reception but would ďuploadĒ all the data once back in reception.

The other time was as a GPS based ICO using the above mentioned app. There was an issue with this because an Iphone screens not clear enough in direct sunlight. I also found that dust on the screen was an issue too.

Thanks for that, out of interest,

- how accurate was the ICO.

Screen:

- Keeping in mind that screen technology has advanced, can you compare it with the new anti glare screens, especially those found on the industrial tablets?
- Was the dust an issue because of the impaired visibility, or were you scrolling "on screen", and that was an issue?

The ICO function was VERY accurate.

I havenít seen the new tablets.

The dust stuck to the screen because of static, the backlight wasnít powerful enough to shine through, or with many angles of sunlight it made it unreadable. It needed to be wiped regularly.

Iím remembering now that I had it in a leather waterproof holder. It wasnít a good idea as it overheated in direct sunlight and turned itself off once or twice. As a backup, the 950 has a built in ICO.

I parked my Husqvarna 701 SM the other day and have been thumping around on my KTM 690 Enduro R.
I don't know what it is, but I think I prefer the older style engine without the balancer shaft in my 690.
Thumpers are supposed to vibrate a bit and should have lots of bottom end grunt and should not be wanabee twins which want to rev.

I also prefer the '16 701 over the later engine. More feel.

Problem nowadays is almost everyone has got twin mania. If you have ridden a modern twin almost everyone will shy away from a single unless they are into technical riding which is few. Sad but true.

True and a single is lighter and creates better low down torque but yes everyone wants snowflake smooth twins - in reality modern singles like my 701 are pretty damn smooth and no longer the thumpers of old.

I doubt whether a 701 will have better low-down torque than the T7, for instance.

It is the old Husky TE630 engine as I recall with a few tweaks and new ECU. Great engine and gearbox.
