Title: Rocky Horror thru Darkest Africa
Post by: JonW on June 10, 2019, 12:53:19 pm
One of my biking frustrations at the moment is finding people that enjoy the same type of riding that I do, namely dual sporting in technical challenging conditions. There are a few local guys who do enjoy this type of riding, guys like Highsider and Beebob do, but when they are not available then I either have to ride solo, which is not ideal, or stay at home.

So last week when I received a surprise PM from Bullet telling me that he and Dawie Roos are coming to Kzn with their KTM 500's for the weekend and asking me if I knew of any suitable tracks they could ride I was in my element. They booked in to Zingela Lodge for the weekend, and the plan was that I would meet up with them on Saturday morning and then spend the day riding, showing them some of my routes in the area. The fact that they were both on 500's alleviated any concerns that I would normally have in taking strangers along some of the routes I had planned, and as it turned out there was no need for concern, they are both excellent riders, quite a few levels higher than me.

The meeting spot was set for the fuel station in Muden at 08h30 and I sent Bullet (Shaun) the tracks of the route a few days before. I asked on a couple of my local riding forums if any of our local riders was keen to come along and it was only Beebob who was keen, but that was fine, he is a very good rider and i enjoy riding with him. So we set off from Hilton at around 07h00 to meet the others in Muden. Thanks to Shaun and Dawie for some of your pics which I stole off FB  :thumleft:

Nice ride through Karkloof, and Rietvlei to get to Muden.

After a short wait Dawie and Shaun roared in on their 500's, and it was immediately obvious to me that these guys have been around the block a few times.

We made our introductions and then blasted off on the dirt road that runs next to the Mooi River to the start of the rocky track that we have nicknamed "Rocky Horror"

Rocky Horror was in a superb state, just the way I like it. Some free flowing bits, plenty of rocks and some quite badly eroded sections where you have to choose your lines quite carefully.

We got through Rocky Horror pretty quickly, mainly because we were on perfect bikes for this type of riding. Guys on bigger bikes have been known to spend hours getting through this section.

From here we headed to another of my favourite tracks which goes through the  Mhlopeni Conservation reserve, another beautiful area.

Stopped for a quick chat with andy Allcock who owns Mhlopeni Lodge, and then on to Uncle Buck's tavern in Muden for burgers and ice cold beers

After a great meal and coffee at Uncle Buck's, which I highly recommend, we got back on the bikes and headed for Imbabala and Darkest Africa.

Had a great almost uneventful ride through darkest Africa, almost because I came flying over a blind rise and landed in an eroded ditch. I managed to stay on the bike more through luck and my 520's good suspension than through any riding skill on my part, must have looked amusing to whoever was following me.

After getting through Darkest Africa and reaching the dirt road we stopped and said a quick farewell to Shaun and Dawie who didn't have far to get back to Zingela. Beebob and I still had a 2 hour ride to get back to Hilton and the headlight on my bike isn't working and the shadows were already starting to look ominously long, but we made it back just as the sun was setting.

Shaun and Dawie, great pleasure meeting and riding with you and showing you around my riding area, always worth it when you can see how much someone has enjoyed the ride  :thumleft:

Anyone else want to come down and ride, just drop me a PM.

Thanks again Jon. It was a great ride. We really enjoyed the riding and the company. I have got quite bad at writing ride reports so I am relieved that you did it.

This area is really beautiful and the technical riding was really great without being ridiculous. On the Sunday we did the other route you gave us on Zingella. At first we thought that you must have been a little mad because the first 2 kms went straight up the mountain via some large steps, ruts, switchbacks and lots rocks. Very challenging but what a sense of achievement when Dawie and I got to the top without breaking our bikes or ourselves. Have to admit that we were a little more convinced of your sanity when you told us that we did it the wrong (more difficult) way around, but we were so glad that we did.

We are really looking forward to coming back to do some more soon.

Thanks again.

Hey Shaun

I was somewhat surprised to hear you guys did the hill route from the bottom.

I tried this once with a mate on his 990, but we didn't get far. Track was in better condition then too.

The Property owners were also surprised. They said nobody's been that way around for many years  :thumleft:

Not so amusing, more spectacular. I was so engrossed in your aerobatics that I nearly followed you.

You guys have set the bar for the hill track in reverse!  When Jon told me you guys went the ‘wrong’ way round and made it I was super impressed.  Three of us went the other way on big bikes a few years ago and it was afkak of note.
I guess we will have to try it now, Jon?

I guess we will.

Been wanting to do the uphill route for a while now

Maybe time for me to throw away that worn out E07 and get some decent rubber on my back wheel

Haha Kilroy I sure don't feel like it after the rides

About 4 weeks ago me and Highsider and another chap rode up to the farmhouse belonging to the guy who owns Darkest Africa to ask if we could leave my bike there for the night as it had a burst water pipe. As we took off our helmets, old Piet Opperman says in Afrikaans something to this effect: "Jirre when you rode up here I presumed you were a bunch of youngsters, but now I see you a group of fokken pensioners"   :laughing4: :laughing4: :laughing4:

Still a great place to ride - Darkest of Africa and Rocky Horror Road - it lives up to its name. Zingela is still the best place for Bikers weekend. Nice one Jon W. Must get off my lazy ass and join you for a ride again.

Great riding Jon.  I must get the Darkest Africa tracks from you for when next in the area as that route looks amazing.   :drif:
Unfortunately I never got my bike down there over the Easter break to take you up on the offer of some riding around there. Looking forward to seeing some more and maybe trying out that burger at the Muden shebeen!!
