Title: A Fool, Friends and Eastern Cape Passes
Post by: JourneyMan on October 20, 2008, 10:25:53 pm
I have these friends of mine who ‚??re-introduced me to DS riding back in 2004 with the Desert Run. I missed their Baviaans earlier this year but managed to get round work issues to fit in a few days to go down and ride some of the passes in the Eastern Cape near Lesotho.

As usual, the work interfered with the planning again and I could only go down to the Rhodes area on Thursday while the rest left Wednesday already.

No problem. I‚??ll solo down on Thursday, overnight somewhere and be with them early Friday morning to have at least two full days of mountain pass riding. At least, that was the responsible planning done at that stage.

Come Thursday morning, I got on the road at about 10H00, trying to survive the first 1 ¬Ĺ hours through Gauteng towards the Freestate. Just managed. Gauteng must be the worst place anywhere in South Africa to start your trip.  :BangHead:

As I had a long haul for the day, I took my first break just after entering the Freestate. Very noble idea and I saved about 3 smokes. I then went and had those 3 + another with the coffee anyway.  :glasses12:

On I went after trying to assist my friend over the phone. His Dakar has cut out near Aliwal-North and they couldn‚??t get it going. All the usual suspect faults were discussed and appropriate treatment prescribed but with no joy.

Bike on the trailer and I‚??ll throw in my enormous expertise and know-how as a Sunday mechanic when I arrive early the next day.  :imaposer:

Just past Kroonstad I had another break after responding to flashing headlights and managing to evade the radar trap. Good to see road users still doing that for others and even more so, for a biker.

The Freestate is dry. Signs to come for the rest of the trip as well.

The road ahead. I enjoyed it thoroughly since my last trip of any kind was back in early June this year.

Fueled up at Ventersburg and at Winburg took the R 708 towards Marquard in search of the first dirt for the day.

Found the dirt turn off but was met by heavy overhead clouds and thunder. Decided to try and out run the storm approaching from behind.

This I achieved very successfully but I think the fact that the wind came from in front of me, helped immensely in this regard.

The storm behind me and receding.

Some pics of the dirt road encountered. Glad to do some dirt riding again.

Got to a Y-junction with no indication on where either of the splits will take me. Eeny-meenie-meini-mo didn‚??t seem a good option so I took out the GPS- on- loan and tried to figure out what road to take.

At the Y looking back the way I came.

Made a decision and got going again. This turned out to be a very enjoyable stretch as it went downwards with different road conditions being encountered. From rocky two track, sandy dirt, twisting corners and finally higher speed gravel. A half-circle type of route where one got to see both sides of the mountains along the way.

Going down.

Had the urge to stop and take this one. Not sure why though.

There was rain here at some stage. Not in this year if I had to make a guess.

Towards Clocolan.

Erm. I‚??ll take left.

Atr Clocolan I had a break and saw some rain clouds in the distance of Ladybrand, my next point on the route. No option but to go on, though.

To follow: Interesting, foolish, irresponsible and hair raising.

Went through the small town of Clocolan towards Lady Brand.

Just past Lady Brand a massive wind and rain storm coupled with small hail, hit me just as I started up the mountain. Nearly got blown off the road twice and immediately decided that I will take my chances with lightning under the Bloekom trees.

I think the chances of lightning hitting me were far less than the wind blowing me in front of an oncoming vehicle.

I had just reached cover when the rain and hail stopped. Soaking wet as I don‚??t have liner fitted and no rain suit.

From there it was a constant battle with the gusting wind. Hitting me from different directions as you go along the escarpment.

Somewhere between Lady Brand and Hobhouse. The storm is past but the wind was very strong all the way to Zastron.

Smoke break near Vanstadensrus.

Near Zastron

Near Sterkspruit and it was decision time. Go back to Zastron, get a nice B&B (There was quite a few I saw) or push through to my mates near Rhodes. The GPS showed the farm where we are staying as just 57km‚??s away. Even realizing that it is as the crow flies and that it will be much further than that due to the twisting passes/roads ahead, I made the foolish decision to push ahead. Lekker ramkat en vol bravade!

A few km‚??s down the road and I realized I‚??m in for a hard time riding.

Fully committed now and starting the dirt near the Lower Telle section in late dusk.

As soon as the sun was away completely, I dropped the speed down to between 20-40km/ph. The Dakar‚??s shitty light once again biting me.  :BangHead:

By now I was ruing my decision to go ahead, not realizing this is still the easy part. Twisting road the whole way, going through the local settlement with the odd pedestrian and odd donkey/horse on the road.

About halfway up, I was standing up, going around a sharp U-turn when the bike just slid out from under me. After a second I realized I was getting wet, jumped up and picked up the bike in one go.

What happened was that the rain of the earlier the days has caused a small stream to come out of the mountain, across the concrete section which was the turn, (didn‚??t know it was concrete when I saw it in the bike‚??s lights) and the small stream has deposited silt on the concrete. Was in the turn with the wheel turning. No chance of rescue.

The scene.

The very first time my knee guards came to my rescue. It did the job superbly since I took the impact on the left knee as I went down. ATTGATT!! Don‚??t scoff at it. It eventually came to good use after three years of riding with them on!

Damage to the bike:  Broken indicator lens. Slightly bent foot rest. Not sure about the handle bars. First impression when I got back on was that it was slightly off line but later on didn‚??t notice it?

After a few smokes and the first chat with my Oloff Bergh for the day, onwards I went. Slightly shaken, not stirred, and no option but to press on.  It was a lonely feeling and just fell short of feeling totally sorry for myself.

Eventually arrived at the top of Lundean‚??s Neck Pass. Around 21H00. Thought the worst was over now.

Downwards and suddenly there were muddy patches which are undistinguishable in the bike‚??s lights as well as rocky sections. Had a few hair raising moments but managed to stay on the bike the whole time.

From there it was a time consuming affair to navigate between the different paths/road to the farm where we stayed.  It was dead quiet when stopping and no light to help. The stars were hidden by over head clouds. Pitch dark.

The fact that technology in the form of cell phone reception in even the most remote places was available, helped me through it all. I was in regular contact with my friends who just wanted to go out and come find me.  I had a hard time convincing them I‚??m OK since I didn‚??t want 5 okes dashing around on unknown roads and in the dark searching for me. But their encouragement certainly kept me sane and focused. Thanks guys! You are the best!  :thumleft: :thumleft:   (They are not WD members. Computer illiterates. The blerry moegoe‚??s! )

I arrived there at 22H48. I have done 842km‚??s for the day.

Had a bite to eat, of few drinks and was out of it the second my head hit the pillow that evening, having survived which was most probably the most foolish and irresponsible thing I have done to date.

Day 2 to follow after getting more pics from the other okes as well.

Thanks for the report, quite epic!! Looking forward to the rest!  :thumleft:

I feel for you with that light. Must have been hectic not seeing what you were in.  :o

My wife & I got caught out at night a couple of times and I must say at least the new 650 and 800 light is a HUGE improvement. Having said that, the old 650 and Dakar is a fantastic bike and I miss its nimbleness.

Day 2 ‚?? Tiffendell Ski Resort Circle Route

Awoke bright and early and got my first daylight view of the Eastern Cape just below Lesotho.

The old farm house where we stayed.

Then threw in my weight behind getting my friend‚??s Dakar running again. Battery OK. Comper OK. Sparkplug is sparking.  All electrical connection points checked and cleaned. No go. Seems as if no fuel is pumped through to the EFI. This took a while and it was decided to let it wait for the afternoon as we will be missing out on riding time.

The workshop on the Stoep

Early tande borsel and refreshment. Workshop duties are thirsty work.

Had a quick brekkie and we got going for the day‚??s riding.

The following are views and road conditions encountered on the way to Rhodes. Easy riding conditions. Twisting down and up the whole time. Good practice ground for cornering skills and the ‚??look-through-the-corner‚?Ě principle.

Turnoff to Tiffendel Ski Resort

At first it was a lekker mellow ride through the mountains. Very enjoyable.

Then came the last part to the plato. Very steep with first and second gear riding, rocky patches, then two trail concrete on which you had to stay because going of the concrete would mean going down (Heavy erosion alongside the concrete spoors)

It gives an idea of the incline. The 2 guys in the bakkie said it felt as if they were going up 90 degrees!

Then the plato towards Tiffendell.

Didn‚??t know Tiffendell was Australian owned! :imaposer:

Then onwards along the Wartrail path.

Even saw Ryperd‚??s family.  And no, I have no idea whether Ryperd has the same attributes.

The descent was very steep as well. More a challenge to me than going up. Weight back, lot‚??s of front brake, engine braking and at times rear brake. At one stage the rear brake gave up due to overheating and boy, was it fun from there!

Had to try my hand at a few artistic shots as well.

Arrived at the bottom at a nice place to have a rest, let the brakes cool down and sommer cool down ourselves as well with a Mini Zamalek.

From there easy riding again to the farm with gentler turns and higher speeds clocked.

Some scenery and roads.

It really is dry. This river/waterfall has ceased to flow.

Arrived at the farm, had a quick shower and started on the Dakar again. We have definitely isolated the fuel pump as the main culprit. Not good news.

The workshop again. The fuel filter out.

I have no fricken‚?? clue!

I think I‚??ll rather start the braai!

Luckily Piet had a voltage-tester-thingamajingie and with the fuel pump out, the majingie said the red wire providing power to the pump is moeg. Luckily he also had a soldering iron.

Repairs under way.

And success!!!  High fives all around!!  :hello2: :hello2:

My contribution was more moral and carrying refreshments but once again I have learned something about the bike. Not that it would have helped in field repairs but still. Not scared now to take out the fuel pump if need be.

Then the braai, some kuiering and early bed as we have a long day planned for Saturday. It was good to know the full complement of bikes will then be on the road.

Day 3 to follow.

Lovely report, Journeyman.

You took on a lot covering that distance on the first day. I find my concentration gets dodgy after a long + extended day......till you get a wake-up like you had, and then I start getting the moer in with myself. Cudo's for carrying on taking pics....... I would have packed the camera away at that point.

I would guess that your bars are not bent but the forks moved in the tripleclamps. One tends to get used to that and if you jump on another bike then that feels skew  ;D

Good stuff, would love to travel there!

Also the only place where there was a pharmacy of sorts. Come to think off it, I have no Idea what we did in Elliot. Checked out the local setting and U-turned back up Barkley Pass to the Bastervoetpad .

Oh. Forgot. We did buy some Mini Zamaleks. Now it makes sense. No time wasted!

The two Dakar‚??s finally together.  8)

The track soon turned to rocky terrain but nothing too hectic. Enough lines to take that skirts the loose, bigger rocks.

The route down. Looks Ok.

Err. No.

A very challenging and benoude boude descent due to muddy conditions combined with rocky track. Survival was the name of the game and it was slow going.

Even so, Piet loosing it in the mud. Hurt his knee but continued on right to the end in Pretoria. 8)

Almost again!

The mud.

Once the mud disappeared, exposed bedrock was encountered with loose rocks to dodge along the way.
Choosing the right lines and then committing to it was the order of the day.

Eventually near the bottom conditions improved and the track changed into twee spoor going through the mountains. Very scenic!  8)

Arrived at this nice spot and decided to rest and have a Zamalek. It was Around 12H00. Slow going but I enjoyed the higher level concentration riding we did.

Also cooling off in the stream. A first for me as well.
Die klomp bleeksiele!

Way forward was again two track, rocky terrain.

Eventually changed to two track smooth riding through the pines forest towards Maclear. Felt like riding on clouds after the previous two-odd hours of straining we took!

Then Joubert (An ardent bakkie driver but scared-of-bikes oke), decided he want a ride as well.

We give him the XR500. The bike cannot be damaged any further. :imaposer:

Despite my insistence, he declines protective gear. He did go very slowly until near the end of the dirt, where he started picking up speed because of confidence, misjudged the curve, started drifting and nearly ended up on the wire fencing. Luckily he listened to our advice to look up, stand up and open up the throttle when he‚??s in the kak! I was riding behind him and it was frickin' funny to witness!  :imaposer:

Smooth!

Good report, just what I was looking for.  We have the same direction in mind for December, so my search for info are seriously improved.  Will mots probably only do some of the roads, but Rhodes and Elliot is still on the map.

Well done!

Good to see you and the Dakkie out

I've become soft. Sunday the last 300 km's my arse was so sore. Standing up from the sitting position whilst riding up was torture. (Even just for that second) Standing and riding was heaven. Trying to sit down again was a mission. Almost like getting the courage to sit down on a toilet in the middle of the winter! Very tenderly searching the correct position and not finding it :imaposer:

Onwards to Naude's Nek.

Church at Ugie. Also a place where if you look down for as second, you are through the place without noticing.

Church at Maclear. Maclear I think is bigger than Elliot and quite a few new building projects on the way.

The road ahead and encountered. Zigzagging the whole way through the mountains/hills. I guess for every 1km as the crow flies, one does 4-5 km on the road. Maybe exaggerating a bit but it would be interesting to get that ratio. And this was true on each day and route we did.

Starting up Naude's. Gradually increasing till such an extent that I got the shivers when looking to the right. No safety edge/rail etc. before the drop-off. Heart in the throat.

Just concentrate on the road ahead. This I did and forgot to take any further pictures on the steeper side of the ascent. Only at the viewpoint and then the top. Hopefully the others took pictures of this stretch as well.

Twisting and turning upon itself. I took too little photo‚??s on this stretch. But there were 5 other camera‚??s as well so I should get some extra photo‚??s of the descent.

Tasteless actually. We had 4 different toppings between us. All concurred. Tasteless.

But have done the novelty now. Will never buy it again if I go there.

Thanks once again for the report, pics, and the routes. Spent a large part of my youth in Cala, went to school in Elliot, played rugby against Maclear, Ugie and Barkly East (u.11, barefeet with the water in the taps still frozen). Have threatened to revisit for a long time, almost made it 3 yrs ago but got stuck in Port st. Johns. Definitely on my agenda for 2009.

4 Days of amazing riding and friendship. 8)

I think one can stay a week and still not have enough time to do all the raods and tracks in the area!

The area will see me again! 8)

JM Your thoughts on taking a pillion through Bastervoet, Potrivier and NaudesNek - doable?

JM Your thoughts on taking a pillion through Bastervoet, Potrivier and NaudesNek - doable?

Potriver/Naude's/Lundean's and most of the dirt roads around that area are good dirt road. Up/down the passes are good as well. Rain of course changes everything.

Bastevoetpad.

It depends on the weather conditions. When we were there, it did rain beforehand making small sections muddy. I would say based on what we experienced that day, yes. Do it. Those sections that were tricky were not long so it can easily be walked by pillion while you struggle through it. Even that rocky section is not too long. A few hundred meters at most.

I would do it if I was there. It's too good to miss.  :thumleft:

Heavy rain of course changes the whole picture. That would make the whole pass and the 2 spoor on the way to/from Ugie a battle in mud. :ricky:

Note: This was almost 4 years ago. Conditions of the pass might have changed for better or worse. Go search RR's on Baster. Lot's of RR's. Search under Glenink's (RIP) name.  8)

Bastervoetpad is rough nowadays. Look for Veldbrand's RR after Glen's memorial. Some sections you should be able to pillion, depending on your skill level. Mostly, going up from the Ugie side, your pillion is going to walk or help you push the bike.  :ricky:

Just take your time and do it. Very much worth it and remember to put a stone on the cairn at the top to wish other travelers good a good journey.  :thumleft:
