Title: Costs involved with shipping a motorbike out of ZA - not to return- Anybody ?
Post by: Dirty Boy on August 20, 2019, 02:35:14 pm
So I am toying with the idea of shipping my 1150GSA over to the UK where I now live.
It seems there are relatively few here in the UK and they are expensive when they pop up on Autotrader. I have owned my for quite a few years, love it and know the bike so would love to keep it. Apart from the actual shipping costs, Im in the dark as to what import taxes I may have to pay. Also how tedious is the red tape ?

Anybody exported a bike or even a car to the UK and know the procedure, or know a company that does this ?

For info: If my bike is worth 55k + 20k shipping+ 10k ??? duties =ZAR 85k  At current rates,  about 18.5 = 4600. Prices range from 3000 up to 5500. There is even one for 8500. They all look a bit tatty and as Ive said before, I know my bike.

Better the devil you know, than the one you don't know. How much is that worth to you? I take it that repairs in the UK come with their own premiums.

Must bike speedometers in the UK (for residential use there) not be in miles? Then you will have to convert your instruments.

Spares are probably more readily available
Mmmm, I was hoping that that the speedo also had Mph on it but I see it doesnt. Will have to make a plan with that.

I definitely recommend Motofreight (in London) and their counterpart Econotrans in Cape Town. I shipped our 2 bikes back and forth with them 2 years ago with no problems at all. Friendly people and very helpful.
