Title: April Tankwa Qualifier 2020?
Post by: Offroad2 on October 08, 2019, 03:16:16 pm
Potential Tankwa Qualifier 2020 ?

Ok so I have been researching a little, it seems some potential riders are nervous to try out GPS navigation and wondering how difficult it is. Simply it is not difficult?
We are thinking of a Tankwa qualifier event using some routes around Tankwa HQ area.
Purpose to encourage competitors to try GPS or Road book.
Get a feel of terrain and format.
Understand cross country events & rules.
   Tips on what you need
Briefing & racing on Sat & Sunday (morning).
Junior Tankwa
Have a Junior Tankwa on the Sat.
Routes will be marked like off-road but some GPS too we need to start teaching juniors.
   Some technical riding
Provisional Date  First weekend April 2020
Would you support this weekend?

I would love to do an event like this, apart from the usual financial & distance challenges...!!

Does this mean you will have to qualify to enter the Tankwa?

Definitely interested. I for one would be very nervous to just enter an event like Tankwa with no racing experience.

Yes because you will know what you in for - not that difficult if you come prepared - it will also help you choose correct class Silver did 670km over three days (it was perfect).

This is your chance to experience a piece of T + we will have some experienced guys to help out on the weekend ie coach people into what they need and show them etc....everything from technical equipment  to riding if needed. If there is enough interest it is on!  Fees will be moderate at approx. normal club race ( I don't know yet but need to cover a medical team too) We will also make sure the weekend is worthwhile.

Always welcome to call me 0829001334 (Clive)

Just please don't make this over a long weekend? There isnt many of them and with small children my wife won't be amused to spend one alone.

Would love to help out as well, as well as a chance to ride some of those areas. :thumleft:

My bikes are either too big or too small for this event, and I'm not really that keen to fork out for a GPS which I won't use otherwise.

Oh absolutely.

Had to pull out from this year's Tankwa at the last minute.

Staying in Gauteng even I will make the effort to attend this.

Provisional date 4-5 April 2020
Format TBA but it will be a just like Tankwa main it will be a proper race just with less distance but with GPS therefore a Qualifier.

Clive, will there be other Tankwa qualifiers that count for those further North or East who cannot afford to come down to the Cape twice in the year?
I'm assuming a previous Tankwa finish will obviously qualify you and maybe a RoA finish? There's a few other rides that utilize GPS's you could possibly include like Sea2Sky or Mata2Pont etc.

You don't want to exclude riders based on budget constraints... just thinking out loud  :)

Hi Brett,
2020 competitors will need to convince the committee they are capable ie raced somewhere before or a suitable CV (they would not necessary need to do T qualifier). We cannot throw them completely in the deep even our marshals would need to competent and know GPS etc...
We need to consider distances, temperatures that can get extreme either way etc...

Its a 6 or 7 hour drive there and a 6 or 7 hour drive back from CT.. I cant anticipate many people going all that way for one afternoon riding. If its not going to be held over a long weekend then guys will most probably have to take the Fri and Monday off to create a long weekend, well im assuming that will be the case. you had better  start buttering up the wife for some time off  :pot: hope to see you there. :thumleft:

It seems to be a fun weekend.  I just need to get one of those magnifying things to fit over a GPS.  My arms are not long enough to hold the bars and read an eTrex10 at the same time...

Dunno what you'll get on Tankwa but I've found following a single line with non-tinted goggles fairly easy, just get rid of the garbage maps and make the line black. The danger markings, etc are a bit iffy. Gonna have to find a workaround. Adventure helmet with bicycle riders glasses works well but then you got dust issues again............

check out Tyleroptix for riding glasses.

Lemme know when you've got a tried and tested solution, Bill. I'm going blind as well ................  8)

Glad to hear a CV will work, I'm not keen on driving around looking for a qualifying race.

An unrelated question, offroad2, but you might as well let us know. All those over 53 riders (me) will need to do a new stress-ecg next year for an MSA license. Will we need to do this if we enter Tankwa on a one-off event license type thing? I doubt I'll be doing the GXCCs next year.

MSA require a stress - ecg for ages 50 and older renewable ever three years

Eish looks like I'll have to get the GPS and do the training. I would very much like to help with the routes and stuff and eventually maybe become a marshal. Do marshals need to do the ECG thing? :P

I ride with glasses , basically what I did was when i upgraded my glasses I changed my lenses in my old glasses to bi focal instead of the expensive all in one tri focal that i currently use.  Then you have to do a few tests on what combination works.. oddly enough my combination taht works is the Arioh helmet with Spirit goggles.. no dust issues but in tight, slow stuff then they tend to fog up

Coming from Pretoria I will have to leave on Thursday morning, sleeping over about halfway then try to make it in time for the briefing Friday afternoon. Same thing Sunday, leaving after we finished, sleep over then only back on Monday afternoon. Unless there is a few guys from Pretoria travelling together willing to drive through in one day. @sidetrack

Going to be quite a stretch but sure it will be worth it.

Well if my memory serves me right Tankwa hq is more than a 1000km from Pta.

To drive that and make it in time for the race briefing in one day will be nearly impossible, then doing some offroading the next day as well. Same story for Sunday.

But maybe at my age I should be able to do this... :ricky:

hehe had to pull your leg WNaude. I like driving so not to concerned with that, get up at 4am and you are there at 6p, guess it also depends on what you drive, I would be making your comment if I was going in a 2.5 Isuzu!

The roads in that area is long open flat and smooth

Haha no worries m0lt3n. I hear you.

Suppose it is doable, but not wih my wife in the car. Hoping some fellow dogs in Pta will be keen on this.

Question for Clive, @Offroad2

Maybe a stupid question, is a one event licence necessary for this qualifier session?

Correct - a MSA club license if riding both or one event for a single event

And my 3 years is up in December. I gotta do another one if I want another license.  :'(

Jokes aside, I think it's a good idea. Never mind what the doc thinks, It tells ME that I'm fit enough to do stuff. The last thing I ever want is to be rescued for a heart attack or heat stroke ............................ embarassing  :peepwall:

Is there a chance that you (or a previous competitor) could post a screenshot showing a section of Tankwa track on the etrex GPS . I'd just like to see what my crappy eyes need to focus on. Alternatively, a quick explanation should on what's visible should do.

I've found I can get by without specs as long as I'm following a track without all the other map stuff, just a black line. Dangers and WPs might still be an issue, if you use them.

I'm not gonna be doing the qualifier so won't be seeing anything until the main event.

So the Tankwa quali is not over the long weekend which is 10-13 Apr?  Then I'm having 2 long weekends in a row :imaposer:
Hi Bill
Unfortunately I have a family wedding on over the long weekend 10-13 April so the date is def 4/5 April
For those travelling from far I'm happy to throw in an extra day on the 6th(April) Monday and take a guided tour (Bikes/Quads) to some other parts of Tankwa at no extra charge. We want people to experience Tankwa

Will announce details soon

Cheers

Ja sien ek trou nou self ook daardie langnaweek na die qualifier, ek sal moet fyn beplan en ek gaan moet mooi ry en nog mooier praat my vrou dinges n aap as ek met n gebreekte arm by ons troue opdaag.

Twee vrae

So moet ek nou n jaar lisensie uitneem of kan ek n one event license vir die qualifier en weer n one event vir die rally uitneem?.
Moet ek qualifier ry om die rally te gaan ry? Of kan ek net die rally gaan ry?

One event licenses can only be purchased once the even entries are open just before a race and only purchased online at www.motorsport.co.za
It is better to join the club www.capexcountry.co.za (only R250) we are  affiliated to MSA then purchase a cross country CLUB license online at MSA.
You don't have to do the qualifier in April to race in Sept  but we suggest you try a cross country or off-road as Sept is quite tuff.

Thanks Clive, do the GPS need to be hard wired?

No they (GPS) don't have to be wired to bike ( We changed the regulations for 2020). Depending on how they were wired we found they would still switch off and have to be rebooted.
The best option are the silicone J Mounts from Curtis Mobile or Flying Brick in CPT.

keep the questions coming - will answer as I can

with all the ride cancellations , looking at upcoming events, this one looks interesting, I see vintage is pre 2005 ??? , might look at it on a 82 DR 500. Wondering about mounting all that navigation stuff on an old bike,  do you need all this stuff on vintage bike, looking at the web site they seemed to be combined with the sept event now, if we back on stream. any input fron guys in the know, Beserker :deal:

Just enter the GPS only class. You no longer need to wire in your GPS, you can run it on batteries  :thumleft:

Whichever one you choose DR BIG 750 make sure that you practice with it beforehand and learn it's quirks. You may want to set it so it doesn't switch off when the power is interrupted and choose which colour contrast of background and track is the best for you in sunlight and shade. Some units will show all tracks, some just the one you have loaded. Also choose if you want the device to point North or your direction of travel. My choice is North it gives you an overview of where you are on the loop but if you are heading South then you have to learn to read it upside down. My personal choice would be to use 2 GPS units. An Etrex 20 with a map set at about 2km out and an Etrex 10 or 20 with or without map set to 200m out. Power them up with vehicle electrics or a cellphone storage battery as it means you can leave the back light running on full power rather than reverting to low setting with the internal battery but have batteries in anyway; things go wrong.

HI
Once we are allowed to ride post covid.... we will update -  For Vintage just do GPS - Only Rally will be on road book.  it is a good option to run 2 x GPS one set on about 80m-100m elevation and the second at 200-500m (this depends on your style but in tech sections 80m elevation for sure).

We will update as soon as we can - for now our direction &  routes are 90 % done. We will then need to do necessary Danger markings & road crossings etc... again it is the next level !    always happy to answer any questions, pls just ask - Lets hope for some freedom to ride soon.
