Sani Pass has been on my bucket list for a very long time. Ever since my dad did it for the first time and told me about its magnificent beauty, I just knew that I had to experience it for myself and, more importantly, it had to be on a bike.
Bikes are and have always been part of our lives. My father is without a doubt a bit of a bike fanatic, he lives and breathes motorbikes, and from a young age, I was exposed to the sport. I can clearly remember racing my Italjet on oval tracks in the old Transvaal. I even had my own mini motocross track in our backyard which my dad had built for me. Our weekends were spent riding the mine quarries. Just the two of us. It was the perfect childhood.
At the end of this year, my wife and I will be emigrating to the Netherlands. We’ve been planning this move for a while but one thing was certain: I could not leave for Europe before experiencing Sani Pass for myself. So, with a deadline lurking, we started planning for this trip of a lifetime.

The team

2StrokeDan – Wooden spoon holder; no further info needed.

MiniDan – Offspring of the guy with the wooden spoon.

Andy (aka “Dries”) – Andreas Lenz is an avid biker hailing from Germany. His current bike collection includes a BMW1000SS, a custom Harley, a 701, an HP2 Megamoto and a 690 that he leaves in SA. This visit to SA was his third for the year and all of them were for bike trips. 2StrokeDan met him via John from Wildwood Adventures and when he was invited to join the Lesotho expedition, Dries was quick to reply with a “yes please!”.

Andy's custom Harley

Now you may wonder how a tall German guy by the name of Andy turned into Dries…On one of our trailered sections, we were chatting and the German wanted to know what the Afrikaans equivalent would be for “Andreas”. We said it would probably be “Andries” but I mentioned that I would rather just call him “Dries”. Andy then piped up: “I like that, you can call me that.” And so “Dries” stuck.

The bikes
Andy had his 690, 2StrokeDan was on his 701 and here I would like to give a huge shoutout to Gideon Joubert aka GJ on the forum. For a small fee, he lent me his 701 for this trip. While I have full confidence in my trusty old XT, the 701 is just a lot more fun. Dankie Oom…

Day 1 – Stellenbosch to Mossel Bay

Bikes loaded and off to Mossel Bay. 2StrokeDan and Andy left Stellenbosch early on the Friday morning with all three bikes on the trailer. The stayed over at my place in Mossel Bay from where we departed for Maclear the next day.

*You’ll see that there aren’t a lot of photos of the first and last days, as the trip photographer (me) wasn’t there on those days.

Day 2 – Mossel Bay to Maclear

Day 2 saw us hitting the road up to Maclear via Uniondale, Willowmore, Graaff-Reinet and Steynsburg. We stopped for breakfast at Sophie’s Choice in Willowmore, which according to Dries was like being back in his mother’s house in Germany. A compliment indeed, as the service was great, the food delicious and Dries could get his first of twenty decaf coffees in for the day. Dries does not drink coffee in Germany; he says that it is too strong and makes his heart race. So when he gets to SA, he overdoses on decaf.

When we started planning the trip, we toyed with the idea of doing the trip exclusively on bikes. I can tell you now that I am extremely happy that we decided against this. I was able to sit in the passenger seat next to my dad which meant that Dries had the entire backseat to himself (perfect for afternoon naps). My dad and I spent hours chatting about all kinds of shit – it was great.

About 30 km outside Steynsburg, we ran into a gentlemen on a 1984 R80GS (I’m guessing here). Not standard at all, as he had built a sidecar onto it. We had just pulled over and saw him coming down the road making a very dodgy-looking beeline for us. His approach was unbalanced and every time he braked, the whole unit would make a sharp dip. Only after he had stopped, we noticed that he was paralyzed from the waist down. He uses bungee cords to strap his legs in place and has welded a metal bar to the gear shifter so that he can shift with his hand. He had also cut half his seat away so that he does not slide back. The bloke’s legs are like toothpicks and if his keys or helmet would fall he would have no way of retrieving them. But the only thing he complained about was not having enough money for fuel. All he wants to do is ride more. What a legend…

After this lekker encounter, we were off again. Our accommodation for the evening was a place called D’s. It is right next to the hospital in Maclear and at first, we struggled to find it. It had no signage and was located behind, what looked like, 3-metre-high fencing. The rooms were however clean, the shower good, and the beds comfortable, and we were all looking forward to a good night’s rest.

As we had arrived rather late, we dropped our stuff, unhooked the trailer and went looking for somewhere to eat. We ended up at Alpine Bistro where we enjoyed a delicious meal served by a very friendly young lady. Dries really took a liking to her, but we did not give him much time to socialize as we were quite tired after the day’s long drive.

Back at our accommodation, our planned peaceful evening soon turned into a nightmarish affair, when a pack of dogs started barking which kept us up for most of the night. These dogs became a running joke that would follow Dries throughout the whole trip.

Day 3 – Maclear to Himeville

The previous night we were discussing our trip to Himeville, which was a short drive by car. 2StrokeDan suggested that we get up a bit earlier, offload the bikes in Himeville and go up Sani Pass and back. Dries and I agreed and we set off in anticipation.

The road to Himeville was just fantastic. To our left, we could see the mountains of Lesotho, causing anticipation and excitement for the coming ride. We were planning to stop for breakfast in Matatiele, but as soon as we entered the town, it was clear that we were not going to find a coffee shop or restaurant. I suggested we go to Resthaven, the same place we were planning to stay later on in our trip. Phillip, the owner of Resthaven, told us that they do not cater to walk-ins and that breakfast had just finished, but that he would help us out with a small meal. Old Dries was dying for his decaf and we were all pretty hungry, so the “small meal” would just have to do. The “small meal” was, however, anything but small and neither were the coffees. Resthaven is an amazing spot and we were already looking forward to our future stay.

Resthaven. the best thing about Matatiele.

Dries enjoying one bad-ass breakfast.

We arrived in Himeville where we were supposed to check-in at the Himeville Arms. A while back I had read @Dwerg’s RR and his comments on The Arms and I was a bit worried about our stay. 2StrokeDan had stayed there in 2012 and remembered the good food and great atmosphere, so when we arrived we were not sure what to expect.

The place had unfortunately seen better days and it was sad to see. We chilled outside with the bikes while 2StrokeDan went to check us in. A little while later he was back and informed us that we would be hitting the road again. Shocked and disappointed, we got in the car only to be told we had been upgraded to the Premier Resort Sani Pass because of a broken water pump at The Arms. What a nice surprise!

The Premier Resort Sani Pass

It was already quite late by the time we finished checking in and unloading the bikes, and we still wanted to head up Sani. When I started that 701 the first time, I could not contain my excitement. The first section was tar road and it gave me a bit of time to get used to the bike. We then hit a section where they were busy with road works and after that, the rockiest part of Sani. We stopped at one of the lookout points, where I took some footage and we just enjoyed the fact that we were on Sani Pass. We decided to turn back, as we still had to head into Himeville and fill up the bikes for the next day.

Day 4 – Sani Resort to Semonkong

We had an early start on day 4 although we had to sort out a couple of things for our return which took a bit longer than expected. We started up Sani and it was a glorious, easy-going ride and soon we were at the top. We went through border control which was the easiest border crossing I have ever done. A trip up Sani is not complete without a visit to the highest pub in Africa which also gave Dries the chance to get his decaf fix.

Sani Pass from the top.

After fuelling our stomachs, we hit the A1 – a wonderful tar road high up in the mountains with scenic passes and twistees for days. It was rather cold, but at that stage, nothing could dampen our spirits.

The A1 with the other two leaving me behind.

This was the first time ever 2StrokeDan and I were using GPS’s. We headed down that tar road following the GPS up to the point where we were supposed to turn left to Thaba-Tseka. I also want to mention that for most of the trip it was 2StrokeDan followed by Dries, and myself at the rear. This was mainly due to the fact that I was the one taking the footage. So at the Thaba-Tseka turnoff, 2StrokeDan shot right past, followed by old Dries. At this point, I just coolly stopped and within a few seconds, I saw them turning and coming back. We really had a nice group dynamic and were never too far from each other. Lesotho does make this a little bit easier, as the constant turns and bends always give you the opportunity to look back.

Without them having to stop, I indicated the correct road and we were off again; this time on our first gravel road in Lesotho. The kilometres flew by and before we knew it, we were in Thaba-Tseka. It took us a while to find the “garage” as it was basically two pumps next to a little building a few meters off the main road. Difficult to spot, we rode past it, and at the end of the town, I turned around, signalling 2StrokeDan and Dries to follow. We eventually did find it and were able to refuel.

Spirits were high, but we knew we had to keep moving, as time was not waiting on us. Shortly after leaving, 2StrokeDan realised he had a slow front puncture. We stopped and had a look if we could find the hole, but couldn’t. Using the hand pump we could get the tyre to a good pressure and 2StrokeDan said he’d keep going. For the next couple of kilometres we were so focussed on pushing as we were behind schedule that we again missed the turnoff. And this time it was with a good ten to fifteen kilos. We stopped to pump the tyre again and this was when I realised that our resolution on the GPS’s was way out. We were riding at a 1:8km ratio and changed it to 1:500 meters. This changed everything, and would cancel out any further missed turnoffs for the rest of the trip. Unfortunately, we were now way off schedule.

After turning back and finding the right road, we started to realise what Lesotho is all about. When truly riding Lesotho, time flies and the kilos stand still. This last section to Semonkong was, for a lack of better words, fan-fucking-tastic. Rocky with eroded single tracks, it had everything and we were loving it. Late afternoon, the wind came up and the sun was directly in our eyes. At one stage, we were heading up this really steep, rocky climb and you could see absolutely nothing. 2StrokeDan and Dries headed to the left and I had this sinking feeling that the road was actually going to the right. I was right, and soon the two of them also realised it and left the field and turn back to the so-called “road”.

We arrived in Semonkong just before dark and I remember getting onto the tar road and not having a clue which way to go. We took a chance and headed in a direction, and 800m down the road we luckily saw the road sign for Semonkong Lodge. The lodge is rather hidden and you need to go through the town and down into the valley, where you cross a river to get there. I was so relieved when we stopped at the lodge and only then realised how tired and sore I was. We checked in and were shown to our room which was located up in the valley. We rode the bikes up, unpacked, and headed to the restaurant for dinner.

That night we received word that Semonkong had run out of petrol. This really was bad news as we all needed to fill up. One of the staff members said that the owner had some contacts, but he would only be in the next day at nine. This was not going to work for us, as we had to leave very early. We decided that we wouldn’t let this dampen our spirits and that we would have a lekker night’s sleep, enjoy a good breakie and then make the best of it.

Day 5 – Semonkong to Matatiele

The next morning 2StrokeDan’s tyre was completely deflated and fixing it became our first priority. We took turns pumping the tyre as the others felt for the hole. We eventually found it, fixed it, and as we were throwing soapy water over the repair, I saw another hole bubbling about 2 inches away from the one we had just fixed. Shortly after, we had that one fixed as well, and we descended the hill towards breakfast.

At breakfast, we met the manager and asked where we could get fuel. He said that he had sent out one of his guys to go source us a jerry can or two. Around 08:30 we got news of a man in town named Serami who had fuel. We packed our bikes and went off looking for our next fuel source.
Serami, and I hope the spelling of this name is correct, was one super-friendly bloke. When we arrived, there were about five or six men standing around a small tin building. I asked if I could speak to Serami and they all burst out laughing. I first thought that I had mispronounced his name or something and asked if everything was ok. Serami then stepped forward and wanted to know how I knew his name. After explaining the situation, we got down to business. We enquired about the price of his fuel and if it was clean. He politely replied that he was asking more than what you would usually pay for fuel, but that this was his business. He informed us that his asking price was R16/l, and also promised that the fuel was clean. Seeing that this was similar to what we were paying for fuel in SA, we had no problem with the price.  ;D

It was a beautiful day, our tanks were full but unfortunately, we did not have enough time to do the planned route to Matatiele, so we decided to do a quick trip to the Semonkong waterfall.

Dit is baie hoog daar af.

I could have spent the whole day at the waterfall and would have loved to have walked down, but time was not on our side and this was a bike trip. So off we went to our next destination – Matatiele.

Hi SM, yes, I use the Tubliss system in my wheels. Happy with them, so far, been using it for about 4 years.

First had it on the front of the XT, but not the rear as there are no 17 inch kits available yet.

In my lifetime's motorcycle riding, I have bought far less tyres than the average rider. It's an economical thing. :pot:

We were driving at a good pace, but you always need to be wary of goats, sheep and the odd horse walking into your path. We were coming around one bend when 2StrokeDan pointed out this poor local running full tilt after a horse, who had decided that he was getting out of there. 2StrokeDan and Dries tried to cut the bugger off, but he left the road and bypassed them. I then shot ahead, jumped off the bike and decided it would be a good idea to take the running animal head-on. Luckily he stopped and I could grab his reins. Below a picture of the relieved horseman and me.

Shortly after the horse incident, we headed done into the valley and rode next to the Orange River until we go to a little town called Mpite. Next up was Qachas Nek and two quick stops at border control, and we were officially back in South Africa. Down Qachas Nek Pass and straight to Matatiele we went, and after a quick refill and we were back at Resthaven. Phillip received us, showed us our accomodation, and we started unwinding for the day.

Our room was located on the first floor and shared a massive balcony with two other units. In the unit next to us there were two (what looked like) travelling business poeple and in the other one there were three or four young women. Now “shy” is not a word I would use to describe Dries, when given the opportunity, he will strip down to his undies and meander about while recording voice notes to family and friends. So on this particular afternoon, Dries was on full show in an orange number recording and listening to voice notes. My dad and I were sprawled out on our beds talking about the day’s events while enjoying a beer. We could here the girls laughing and chatting away on the balcony and Dries moving between the room and the balcony.

All of a sudden my dad turned to me and, as if finally realising what was going on, said: “Loop hy nog die heel donnerse tyd só rond?!”. All I could do was to burst out laughing at the fact that Dries was just being Dries.

That evening, Phillip’s wife prepared the most tender fillet steak I have had in a very long time and dinner was rounded off by a delicious Peppermint Crisp tart.

Resthaven you beaut...

Day 6 – Matatiele to Katse Dam

It was our third day in Lesotho and I was all pumped up. During the first two days, we experienced some some highs and some lows, and I felt ready for what the day would bring. Up Qachas Nek we flew, only to arrive at a closed South African border post. Chilling in the African sun made Dries very happy, but 2StrokeDan and I didn’t even want to climb off the bikes, because w wanted to get through the gates as soon as the opened. Literally second, third and fifth in the que meant a quick border crossing on the SA side. Off to the Lesotho border crossing, a quick stamp, and I was on my bike. Keen to get going again, I started the bike and tried to bypass the boom. This had some official with a whistle give me a stern look, as I still needed to pay the mandatory 40 rands. In my defence the woman at the station told me I could go ahead and she luckily she did defend me . Money paid and we set out for a full day’s Lesotho riding.

Barely off the tar road, we hit an extremely rutted section and it was heaven. I was leading the group at this point and got so excited that I left the other two behind at an intersection. While channelling my inner Jarvis I soon came back to earth and turned back for my comrades. (This might actually be the real reason why I rode at the back… :'()

Shortly after, we got to a section in the road where you could cross via either an older, perfectly functioning, low-water bridge, or a suspension bridge. As I was the first one there, I went for the suspension bridge. Once on it, we stopped to take some pictures and we were just about to set off again when we realised that the other side had had planks removed and all that was left was the exposed I-beams. 2StrokeDan took the lead and we followed. Passed the I-beams and we were faced with a horrible eroded and highly off-camber climb. Seeing that 2StrokeDan was already heading up the hill, seemingly undisturbed by this horrible obstacle, there was nothing to it but to do it.

After that excitement the hills and mountains rolled on infront of you and all you could do was try and take it all in. Around 1 o’clock we again arrived at Thaba-Tseka for a refill.

Made me think of horseshoe bend in Arizona...yes...no...maybe???

The road from Thaba-Tseka to the Katse dam is k@k. It felt like every pothole in Lesotho was on this stretch. But I just had to bite the bullet as the following section at the bottom of Katse dam was unreal. @Losper had laid out our route and I must say he knows his shit. But more about him later…
So we descended the valley on this wonderful “road” to what must have been the bottom of the Katse dam. We then found a steep-climbing tar road and all of a sudden we were faced with the dam in all its glory. No picture can really do it justice, but I promise you it was phenomenal.

The entrance to Katse village has a boom and guard where you need to sign in. We stopped, signed in, and went through the boom gate. But as we entered, just 50 metres down the road, a woman with a red flag was also ushering us in. Dries, Dan and I all looked at each other wondering WTF was going on here. So her job is basically to vet people that want to enter the village after they have already gone through the security post. Still confused about that one.

About one kilometre down the road and we were at Katse Village reception. Once we had checked in, we settled into our rooms and took a few minutes to unwind. We then hopped back on the bikes and went searching for a snack. The little shop/shebeen we found only had warm beers and we were forced to head back to the super-secure Katse village.

The promised Wi-Fi and DStv did not work which was a bit of a bummer as we wanted to check the weather prediction. The previous night in Matatiele the weather report had predicted heavy rains and even some snow in high lying regions for our leg from Katse to Himeville. As the entire Lesotho is a high lying region, I really wanted to check what we could be expecting the next day. The only feedback I could get was from the woman in the office who assured me that there was lots of rain coming and that is was currently raining on Sani.

Looking through our bedroom window, we could see dark clouds rolling in from the east and we needed to decide on the next day’s ride. But first, there was dinner to look forward to and after a quick shower, we were good to go. The tasty food, accompanied by some draughts made for an excellent evening. Unfortunately the accommodation at Katse was probably the most disappointing of our trip and the photo below pretty much sums it up.

Day 7 – Katse dam to Himeville

We awoke to dark clouds and the promise of imminent rain, so rain gear was the order of the day. The @Losper day 4 tracks would be swapped out for the most direct route back to Sani Resort. First was the matter of that horrible pothole-infested road to Tsaba-Tseka. After arriving at Thaba-Tseka to refill without seeing a drop of rain, I started to wonder if old Murphy would be playing a major role in the day’s ride. It actually seemed to be clearing up a little and we were starting to experience, what felt like, buyer’s remorse. At the petrol station we discussed were a good spot for lunch would be and we all felt like we could go another few kilometres before having to stop.

Off we went and as planned we found a nice little stop off the main road, down the valley next to a little stream. While Dries and 2StrokeDan unpacked our food, I saw a great little section to go play with the bike. This would also be my first fall of the bike trip. As I tried to turn against this little ant heap, I lost my balance, and tumbled over. Because of the incline I was at, the tumble became a full-on “bollemakiesie”. Luckily no harm was done to me or the bike – maybe just a little to my ego – and I decided that lunch would be a safer option  :-\

While eating, we again experienced one of the main things that I love most about Lesotho. You always feel as if you are the only people for miles and miles, but stop for a second and locals pop up out of nowhere. And this time again, stop and they pop. Amazing how they chill in the field with what seems to be almost nothing. Then we go on a minimalist bike adventure into Lesotho, and end up looking like pack donkeys compared to them. Great isn’t it?

After lunch we headed back to the A1, and knowing that this would be my last gravel road in Lesotho was a very bitter-sweet feeling. I was tired but happy after three and a half days of Lesotho, but so amped for what was to come. As we rode, the weather again started to change from “I think it might rain a bit”, to “hell it’s going to rain”.

So the A1 arrived, we hitted right, and off we went on the short, fun-filled 40 kms through the mountains to Sani. The rain never materialised, but the promised cold did. This was accompanied by some super-intense mist. The last 10 to 15 kms before Sani top was bad, so bad in fact that when we arrived at the border control it looked like it had been raining for a few days. We then rather decided to head to Sani Mountain Lodge where we had two cappuccinos and the obvious decaf before checking out.

The official at the border control didn’t let us stand outside like the time we came in, but invited us inside where it was nice and warm. Speaking to the official 2StrokeDan asked when it had stopped raining because there were huge water puddles everywhere. The official replied that it had not rained and the puddles was purely from the mist. With that, we said goodbye to Lesotho and started our descent down Sani pass.

Everyone who has ridden Sani pass will be familiar with the first section – the long straight down to the first left turn. It was muddy, very muddy and therefore very slippery. Off the tared section and onto the mud, and all of a sudden it was all about just not losing the bike under you. The first few turns were tricky but thereafter it got a whole lot easier.

Day 8 – Himeville to Nelspruit

While loading the bikes the previous night, Dries discovered that his front tyre had a bad cut in it, and asked if there was any way of getting a new one before our weekend’s riding in Nelspruit. I messaged Henk (@chopperpilot) and Canzius (@Noneking) to ask if they could possibly help. I knew that they were probably still working the next day but was hoping that they could spare a couple of minutes to check for us. Within minutes both of them had phoned around, as well as each other, and sorted us out. They even went as far as fetching the tyre for us – something we said we would do the Saturday morning. We would later meet these guys in person and learn what wonderful people and really accomplished riders they are.

So we tackled the (roughly) 800 km stretch up to Nelspruit, where we stayed with Henk and his wife Jana. These people are so incredibly nice, I cannot state it enough what great human beings they are. From the start of the planning, Henk had offered his place to us. They gave us a safe spot to park both the car and trailer, and a place to work on the bikes. The flat we stayed in was fully kitted – milk, coffee, tea, yoghurt, fruit, muffins (luckily he does not own a BMW, so this was safe to eat) – along with great views and awesome dogs.

We arrived rather late and still had to pop by the shop for some snacks. A quick fitment of the tyre and we were off to our braai at @Noneking. Noneking received us and showed us to his braai area which has the most incredible view of the surrounding areas. The only downside was that you needed to pass his garage, which has these massive windows behind which his HP2 stands.

2StrokeDan almost got in the car and left, but fortunately we went with chopperpilot. Just kidding ! We were treated like royals and later to a plankie braai – something Dries had not experienced before and absolutely loved.

Day 9 – Noneking Day Ride 1

After a great evening and meeting Chopperpilot and Noneking, we would now finally get to experience their backyard. Noneking met us at Chopperpilot’s house and we headed around the corner to the petrol station. Here we got to meet Martin (@Foxi) on his 790 and Saai on a 690.

It feels like I’m repeating myself but, again, super nice guys. The seven of us headed out of town to the rendezvous point. Here our group doubled in size when we met: Rex Benson (@Rexc-w ) on an 1190, Stephan Reyneke on an HP2, Ingo de Jager on another 1190, Ivan Gibbons on a GS1200 and, the most chill giant I have ever met, Jan Venter (@BikerJan) on his Africa Twin.

The rest of the day was a bit of a blur, with awesome riding and the people we were with, making it even better. A pine forest was our first destination after leaving the rendezvous point. The pace was good as we flew through forest sections, zigzagging our way to our first stop high up in the hills.

Next would be breakfast at a place called the Bohemian Groove Café (or I think that was its name). Anyway, the food was great, and the banter was off and running. The day was heating up, so the outside area under the umbrellas was ideal.

If you look at the photo above, you will notice everyone except old Dries in the shade which reminds me of our third day in Lesotho. We were on our way to Katse dam and it was also rather hot. Whenever we stopped for a quick drink, 2StrokeDan and I would always seek out a shady area where we could take a break and this time was no different. As we disembarked and settled under some trees we noticed that Dries was not joining us but rather lying flat on his back in the middle of the road enjoying the sun. When commentating that he was crazy, he replied; “Come on man, I’m from Germany!”

After breakfast, the ride continued and I honestly had no idea where we were. I actually did not care, as Noneking had the perfect day’s riding planned. From forests to plateaus, down valleys and up tarred passes; the riding never stopped and it just got better and better. We would take the occasional break here and there, but we kept on going.

Stephan here accompanied by hundreds of flying insects. Actually never noticed them on the ride, but from the picture they were clearly there.

Soon we found ourselves at a shebeen for a nice cold one. The banter continued and everyone was just in an all-round good mood.

The next part of the ride was my absolute favourite of the day. It was a section of roughly 40 km and it was next to the Kruger fence. It was so good that I unfortunately forgot to switch on the GoPro. The road had these great little humps which were a lot of fun while going at speed. Actually that is an understatement, they were the shit!!! We stopped for a quick break under a railway bridge.

Dries trying to spot wildlife, because while on the bike there was no time to look around.

The second part of that road had our group split in two, as someone had gotten a puncture. Noneking, chopperpilot, 2StrokeDan, Dries and I chilled at the turnoff while waiting for the others. The sun was hot, but at least the bikes offered some shade.

When we were joined by the other guys, Noneking was back on his bike and we were off again for the last bit of sand. Now sand is something I like very much, in fact, I love sand, so this last section was good fun for me and seeing that I was on the 701, I was in 7th heaven.

The day was coming to an end as we climbed one of the final hills and reached the tar road again. It was getting rather late and we still needed to get home, shower and go to the shop before heading to Noneking for another braai. But the okes would have non of that and insisted on one last beer.

I was wrong again…

Day 9 – Noneking Day Ride 1

Next would be breakfast at a place called the Bohemian Groove Café (or I think that was its name). Anyway, the food was great, and the banter was off and running. The day was heating up, so the outside area under the umbrellas was ideal. Correct - in the little Town called Kaapsehoop, which by road is about 30km from Nelspruit. We took the scenic offroad route there through the plantations from Alkmaar

The above photos are from one of our stops overlooking some part of their backyard. Again no idea where we were…  ;D In the Blue Swallow Reserve on the escarpment close to the town of Kaapsehoop. Views from the escarpment towards Nelspruit in the North East and Barberton in the South east. Also had a view over Adam's Calendar

The following pics are from another lookout…still lost. Views over Low's Creek Valley towards Louisville coming from Shiyalongubu dam. Overlooking Lily Mine

Soon we found ourselves at a shebeen for a nice cold one. The banter continued and everyone was just in an all-round good mood. Shebeen in Matsulu

The guys all filing into the shebeen.

That evening we were hosted by Noneking again for another great braai and was joined by Jan and Saai. We chatted about the day’s ride and I must have mentioned to Noneking about two or three times what a great route it was and how it could not have been any better.

I was wrong again…

Day 9 – Noneking Day Ride 1

The day was coming to an end as we climbed one of the final hills

This little rocky climb looks a lot less intimidating on the photos than it is in real life. Before the climb, you are riding beautiful jeeptrack in the bush (See pics of 2SD & MiniDan approaching). Come around a 90 degree corner With vegetation obstructing your view of what waits ahead and you are immediately onto the big rocks at the start of the climb. It has caught out many a skilled rider, but on this day, everyone negotiated it without any issues.

Day 9 – Noneking Day Ride 1

Next would be breakfast at a place called the Bohemian Groove Café (or I think that was its name). Anyway, the food was great, and the banter was off and running. @chopperpilot, I have found the 10mm ratchet ring/flat Mastercraft spanner that went missing in my Husky's toolkit this afternoon while packing things away.

I really hope you have not bought a replacement yet, and send me your address details, and I'll Postnet it to you this coming week.

I believe it got packed into my tools when we fitted Dries' new tyre at your place.

Day 10 – Noneking Day Ride 2

The second day’s riding in Nelspruit saw a similar start with Noneking meeting us at Chopperpilot’s house. Lee Badenhorst, a short, super enthusiastic, Englishman also joined us on this day. Noneking was going to take us on the LDBA (Lowveld Dual Bike Adventure) black route and we were really excited. So once again, we headed out of Nelspruit and later turned right into the bush. Straight off the bat, I got my second fall of the trip out of the way. I was following Chopperpilot on this “twee spoor” – him on the left and me on the right – when all of a sudden, out of the dust, a rather large pool of muddy water appeared. Trying to switch to the left side of the path saw my bike slip out under me and I was mud bound. Nothing serious, just rather dirty.

This day was insane, I cannot describe all the places he took us, but it was just great. Up and down steep, rutted, bush-surrounded paths, to single sand paths, dry river beds, cattle paths, rocky roads and even over massive rock formations. My mind was blown and I just loved it.

If you look closely at the photo above, you’ll see that the sky is rather grey. This was due to a nearby bushfire that would later play a role on my ride.

We had just finished this lovely sandy section and turned onto a railway service road when Lee discovered that he had a rear flat. Unfortunately, Lee had none of his tools with him, as he had given it to Saai on the previous day’s ride and not gotten it back yet. So a 21” front tyre had to do.

Some pictures of us sorting the tyre out.

This would also be the end of my ride for the day. Early that morning, something got stuck underneath my contact lens and my eye was very irritated. The nearby bushfire made it worse and finally, I had to calls it quits.

Lee would also call it a day as he could not risk riding on with that tyre, so the two of us headed back to Nelspruit with the others continuing the ride.

While the others were enjoying the last half of the day’s riding, Lee and I headed back to Nelspruit. At one point, Lee pulled into this old, rundown petrol station and instead of filling up shooted straight past the pumps and parked his bike. “Chilli chips and a quart?”, he asked while getting off the bike and soon afterwards I found myself on a blue beer crate, enjoying some chilli chips and a cold Black Label quart.

While sitting there this character arrived and started up a conversation with Lee and myself, talking about how bad the economy is and how it was time for all of us to start standing together. And, according to him, the best way we could do this, would be to buy him a beer. Lee, somewhat amused by this guy’s tactics, offered him what was left of his quart. New best friends, he started telling us about how he needed to find a job and that he shouldn’t actually be sitting here drinking beer and that he would be a dead man if his wife found him. Lee then piped up and said that I was from the SABC and making a documentary that was going to air in two weeks time. He then wanted to know where our cameras were which led to Lee pointing to the GoPro attached to the side of my helmet. The guy couldn’t believe his luck – he was going to be on TV! As if struck by lightning, he quickly hid his beer behind the crate he was sitting on and politely requested that we not show this part on TV – he didn’t want to get into trouble with his wife!

After a good laugh, we were on our way again. The last 20 or so kilometres were really tough, as I could not see with my left eye, but I made it home. Arriving at our lodging, I took a shower and an afternoon nap.

The rest of the group arrived soon after and we said our goodbyes to Noneking and started getting ready for a great evening with Henk and Jana. Henk prepared a juicy piece of meat for us and Jana spoiled us with pap and wors.

What a day that was…

Day 11 – Nelspruit to Sidvokodvo

A slow start to the day saw us quickly pop into the local Spar for some refreshments, then back to Chopperpilot to pack and say goodbye. He also gave us an alternative route, which would take us through a game reserve on our way to Sidvokodvo. The day’s drive was lovely and we really took our time cruising down into Swaziland or, as it is now known, Eswatini. We were on our way to an old school friend of mine who, although he doesn’t ride himself, had promised us that we could ride anywhere. A quick stop in Manzini at a huge and well-equipped Spar and we soon arrived at Arnold’s house. We had a lovely evening next to a massive fire, accompanied by the promise of great riding the next day.

We had just finished our dinner when 2StrokeDan received some news which altered our plans  for our final couple of days on the road. The original plan had us staying in Swaziland for two nights, in Bloem for another two after which we were planning to head back to Mossel Bay. Instead, we stayed over one night in each location before returning to Mossel Bay. We made the necessary arrangements with Michiel and settled in for the evening.

Day 12 – Sidvokodvo to Bloemfontein

This was a long day. We left Swaziland via the Oshoek border post and headed to Ermelo where we stopped for breakfast at the local Dros. After ordering something to drink, we noticed the specials for the day: lamb shank or a 500g T-bone steak for R100. Somehow we thought that this would be a good idea and shortly after Dries and I were eating our T-bones and 2StrokeDan his shank. The portions, unfortunately, got the better of us and Dries would be the only one to finish his meal while 2StrokeDan and I asked for doggy bags.

Standerton would be our next town and pretty much directly after Standerton Google maps decided to fu@k with us and we ended up on some obscure gravel road going nowhere. This led us heading towards Vereeniging instead of Bethlehem. The roads and signage up there are terrible and it really made me appreciate the Western Cape. After finally finding a tar road, the Kia’s exhaust went. This took us from driving in a quiet car to driving in a V8 with no power. It was super funny, especially with 2StrokeDan revving the car at every opportunity to try and scare some innocent pedestrian. Luckily it was a relatively quick fix and soon we were off again.

We arrived in Bloem just before dark and still had another 80 km to go to Michiel’s farm. He already had the lamb chops on the fire when we arrived and was visibly disappointed when we told him that we would only be staying the one night. But that would not deter Michiel from getting a few words in. The lamb was delicious and so was the conversation to follow. Michiel has this ability to just keep on going and eventually the three of us again had to disappoint him by informing him that we needed to get to bed.

Day 13 – Bloemfontein to Mossel Bay

Michiel had coffee, tea and breakfast ready when we strolled into the kitchen. Next, we had to try and get the Suzuki TS 185 that he had given my dad onto the trailer. With some manoeuvring the bike was on and fastened and it was time to say our goodbyes.

We had a great trip back to Mossel Bay and the time in the car offered the perfect opportunity to reflect on the fantastic time we had – all the great people we had met, the places we saw and the spots we were able to explore with our bikes.

Some of my fondest memories in life are from riding dirt bikes and snowmobiles on trips with me Pap.

Man, you fellas sure did cover some territory.

Thanks for sharing.  :thumleft:
