Post by: Buccaneer on November 20, 2019, 04:39:45 pm
Hi All

I'm looking to buy an adventure bike.
I'll mainly ride alone but wife will join some times.
I Geuss my riding will be 70% tar 30 off road... Dirt roads.

Please give me suggestions on which type of bike and why?

My budget is 160k.

Let me know?

Regards
B

Do you want to buy new or second hand?

2nd hand 160k almost gives you to many options.

Wouldn't go new again lose too much straight of the floor. At that price range you are spoilt for choice. I ride an AT. Girl often rides with and no problems. Was also on the lower end price wize when i looked around before getting 'Peggy'. My 2c

If I was told to spend 160k . I would get something like the following:
Old school thumper (xr 600, fugley, xt500 or dr) , 2009 2010 1200gs with lowish milage and a bws scooter.

Just to cover all the basis.

I must admit I like the bmw 1200 adventure and the honda African twin adventure sport.
I want the best of both worlds.
Good road bike good off road.

Any one owned bmw 1200 adventure and a honda africa twin adventure sports the can give me a honest comparison?

I can tell you from experience that the KLR is not a comfortable 2-up tourer, unless both of you are built like toothpicks. I suspect it will also be true of the XR, XT and DR

In your budget range you should get (2nd hand) an LC BMW, STen Yamaha, Triumph Explorer. All three known as good long distance touring bikes. If you decide on an AT, try and go for a fair distance with the wife as pillion, to see if she is comfortable. Some pillions find the AT to be uncomfortable

Anything in the R160k class can do what you envisage. A lot in the R60+ class as well. You will need to refine your requirements.

Lots of buyers do not want to do the fixing tube thing and some don't mind.

I think your options are down to 2: r1200gs (not GSA) and Super Ten ZE. Both are super tourers with capable dirt road manners. Which one of the two? Best would be for you and wife to do test ride (my wife had a clear preference after pillioning on both). Also which bike would cross your path as "for sale" (not many ZEs on market).

I would take a Truimph 1200 for a spin too after youve tested the BMW and Yamaha. That engine is a gem!! :deal: :drif:

9 years ago I had R165k to spend on a bike and I bought a 6-month old R1200GS Adv with a load of extra kit - absolutely stunning bike, loved it to bits, sold it a month ago......
9 years on, if I had R165k to spend on a bike, I would buy the same bike for R100k and look for a nice XR650L/R for R40-50k and have the best of all worlds.....

A big GS/A, S10, Triumph, AT are great for touring Namibia's gravel highways, or Clarens for the weekend, but are going to be seriously hard work on the dirt roads of the Waterberg, which has sand for years....
The XRR/L, X-Challenge etc., will make your Waterberg excursion so much fun you want to retire there and then and stay, but will be murder on a trip to Cape Town on the N1.....

My 2c......

Ek stem saam. Tubes is nie vir my ook nie. Vra maar vir Hardy!!! :lol8:

Geez guys, pay attention, the guy's asking advice per the thread topic;  new ADVENTURE bike.

A lot of you mention 1200's :xxbah:

Grant the man an adventure.

Buccaneer, get yourself something in the 650 class, and try some actual ADVENTURE riding.

Not the type where a Toyota Corolla cruises past you.

Then he must get a Suzuki VStrom 650 as he wants tubeliss rims. :deal:

Great choice Chris and he can take R120k for Adventuring too  :ricky: :thumleft:

Is this your first bike? or have you been riding for a while?

The AT is a great bike and forgiving too, if you are new to off-road riding.

Any single is not pillion friendly and none of them will have tubeless rims. Vstrom is a contender.

Had to do a double take on the forum name. Thought it was a very old post resurrected.

Just do the right thing and get a Ktm 990 Adventure. With your budget, you'll get a pristine example and have enough cash left to spend on the awesome rides and adventures that 900 is going to take you on.
