Title: WC - Reccie
Post by: Andy660 on November 02, 2008, 07:58:38 pm
We met at the Richwood Garage at 07h30 .

Lito
Wyneh
Crossed-up
Paramed
N[]vA
XT660

and Mark Hardy, who just came to say hi !

A nice size party for a reccie

We went to Perdeberg to a trail that Wayneh and I found on a previous ride.
.
The two spoor is badly erroded and overgrown.
Wayneh took the lead and I swept.
Sweeping is a good place to be , cause nobody can see you when you fall.

Paramed & N[]vA right

Lito & Crossed-up to the right

The first section is steep with loose rocks and slippery moss , so no pics of the section.

This is the section once the road starts levelling out near the top.

Occationally we had to stop so Wayneh could go ahead and see if we could get through the ditches , water or to see if the road actually existed

We got to a section of this gorge that had a chain across it , so we had to go around through the bush.
Lito walked some of the bikes around the pole.

Paramed dissmounting !!  errmm  !!

Falling !!

Lito lending a hand

We all pushed and walked the bikes up and around the pole/chain , and Crossed-up just rode that little TW200 up and around the pole.

From the left , N[]Va ,Crossed-up , Paramed , Lito  and Wayneh

There were Protea`s everywhere

Paramed !
What`s wrong boet ?

Ready for the next obsticle , fence , gate closed

We got to this steep road to the right which Wayneh made up with his KTM525
N[]vA made it up with some difficulty with his BMW X-Country.

Wayneh called down to leave the bikes and walk up , as he had somthing to show us.

And this is the emblim of a Cannon from The Dutch East India Company

I am on the net doing some research into it.
Apparently The cannons were placed on mountain peaks from Cape Town to Swellendam and from Cape Town To Citrusdal as a warning system.
To let the Farmers know when the ships had arrived in the harbour, so they could bring their produce.

Myself , Lito , Paramed , N[]vA and Crossed-up

Wayneh and his faithful KTM 525

From this point it was lots of ups and downs on very loose stuff and we took the wrong turn and ended up in a vinyard.
We spoke to a chap on the farm who kindly openend the Electic gate so we could get out.

Check this KTM Diesel Pump on the farm.

Notice Lito is wondering where the dog is and has his hand ready on the throttle !!

We made our way around the Mountain to the other end of Perdeberg to vissit one of the Farmers we met on a previous reccie  , but sadly , he wasnt home.
Lito and Paramed had other appointments and left us..
We went on to get some brunch and petrol in Riebeek Kasteel.

After the refreshments we went through Zonkwasdrift and headed for Gouda , down the railway line service road.

We went through Gouda and ended up alongside the Saron canal water way.I didnt know it was there.
On route we found a splinter group of the wilddogs , !!

"Real good time" doesn't come close.  Brilliant day in Bestern Cape.  What a privilege to get to such spectacular places.  Thank you XT660, Wayneh, N[]va, Lito and Paramed.  It was a gas to ride with you guys.

I'll ask about the cannon at work tomorrow.  See if anyone has any further info.

I read on the net , that there is a listing of the cannons in the Castle Museum.

And those no. on the cannon are serial no. I read on a site where they were explaining that the very early guns were Bronze and the later ones steel and came in 4 , 6 and 8 pounders. And that the ones used on the koppies were mostly 6 pounders.

Signal canon, Kanonkop
In the 18th century, a system of signal cannons was used by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to communicate with people on farms and outposts beyond easy reach of the Castle. The six pounder canon is still in its original position near the peak of the hill on Klein Paardeberg, 5km east of Atlantis.

This not the one that we saw though.

A Cannon Museum

XT660, Lito, Patamed, N[]vA, & Crossed-up... What a pleasure, Dawgs! That was a seriously wicked trail - not for the faint of heart.

Thanks again to the ever organising Andy XT660 - what an organiser of routes  :thumleft:

This one was fun, something lekker and different, and the realisation of a ride I had seen many moons ago when we rode to support the Wellington Enduro with the KTM lads....

I enjoyed the size of the group, the company, the laughs, the sweat (phew!!!) and the sights and scenery.  Of course, Paramed had to underscore in the farmers yard (with his knobbly rear) what a hooligan he really is at heart  ::) >:D

We had a moment coming back on Occultdale Road guys - I led out with Paramed closely behind, and a freken Ford Fiesta driven by some youngsters came flying around one of the corners at around 120-130km/h - Paramed your estimation of their speed? They caught a skrik when I was also in the corner (as did I - also doing that speed), and showered me with 4 tyres worth of stones (eina eina). He corrected, went to the side, and then recorrected to the middle of the road where Paramed was. I shat myself.... I looked around in desperation to see the round Yammie lights hoping for the best, and thank God I did see them a few seconds later.

I seriously thought Bryan was a goner.

Carried on, and everyone was in Kyalami mode. I waved over a delivery truck to his side of the road, and then in front a bloody 18 wheeler style truck (just a bit smaller) absolutely shunting along cut the right side of the road to make the corner (where I was at the time). Had to go for the left trench portion of the road, which had my heart pounding.

I cant judge any of them as we were all travelling at good speeds over the legal limit on that dirt, but phew - 3 calls on one road.  :-\

Paramed, lekker for the coffee, always fun having your around man. You're a strong lad to keep those two burgers down, and not to go ralph in the bushes... :deal:

Great group, great riding, what a selection of bikes: XT660, TW200, XCountry, Tenere, 525, SE/R

ps: for those who cooked their brakes coming down the gentle decline  >:D

Gerry de Vries is the expert on cannon at the Cape.  He mailed me this info.

John,

The gun which you saw on the farm "Vondeling" is a Dutch 8 pounder cast iron gun made at Finspang in Sweden. This is known by the "F" on the trunnon end. The length is 2112mm and the diameter of the base ring is 421mm. The date of manufacture is around 1750 and you may have noted the VOC marking on top of the first reinforce which has an "A" above that.  This is the Amsterdam chapter of the Dutch East India Company.   The 1996 on top of the base ring is followed by an "A" which denotes 1996 Amsterdam pounds ( 1 A = 0,494kg ) which is the weight of the gun.
This gun is one of the original 54 guns that made up a signal chain which began near the Castle and extended as far as Citrusdal in the North and beyond Swellendam in the East. It is registered as an Heritage item.
Regards,
Gerry de Vries

That translates to 986 kg.  I'm glad I didn't have to lug it up there.

Now that is flippen interesting.... I think we should find and photograph as many of the 54 over a 12 month period as possible.... Mabe even gps co-ord each one and then overlay them on a map which could be donated to the castle.... I think we are onto something important, all that history, out there waiting to be revisited! :thumleft: Our tree felling business will sponsor some fuel in this regard!

That is AMAZING information lads - so frikking cool man  8) 8) 8)

Unfortunately, that place isnt accessible for all, for obvious reasons chaps.

That 1996 now really makes sense. The sense of history is just mindboggling.

Now guys , I was thinking along the same lines.Although , I thought we should joint the Cannon society , so we have permission to ride up and check that all the guns are still in place and safe.
We get the rides and they get the reports,
That way , we cant get shot at !.
However , I disagree with the GPS thing.
Just how long do you think it will take for some greedy man to use your GPS to find a 986 kg piece of scrap metal.
Nope ! I think that most of us Wilddogs are respossible enough to keep that info to ourselves , and enjoy the routes up the mountains.
I found another route to a connon , also not very well known , but that will be the next ride for the reccie team.

And this was the first cannon we found , but we were more interested in the ride that day.
I did get the farmers name that day and his cell. no.
I think we should go back and do that route up the mountain.
A week before we got there , he caught some blokes towing the cannon down the mountain with a tractor.Thats why its on the ground in the LH rear of my pic.
So Reccie team  !!!

Eventually I was able to get a good enough connection to photobucket.

Paramed had to hold on to the map to keep the ground steady.

There is a really interesting stone ruin up there.  No later than 19th century.

Eeish. This ride was like a good authentic Mexican supper... As good coming up, as it was going down.  :mwink:

Awesome RR XT660R; also great pics N[]vA; and some super history Crossed-up. Paramed... Agreed - "The Cannons are a calling."

...Crossed-up, my Mrs laughed herself sick over this pic. In her words, "Typical picture of confusion... Five guys with a map."

Really only 4 guys with a map.  The fifth guy looks a bit out of it.  Maybe he was thinking about the 2 burgers he'd eaten before setting out, and he was trying to keep them down after the bumpy ride up the hill. :D

Myself and Crossed-up went to the Cannon Museum yesterday and I bought the cannon book.
Some more interesting rides in the planning now
