Title: A Bashful Report
Post by: Red on November 09, 2008, 04:03:21 pm
We got home at 2 o'clock and I am typing with my notebook on my lap in bed.  I am FINISHED!!!

I was great.

Lesotho was an experience...

Ramabanta was a lovely spot.  There is this pass that you can see from the Trading Post.  It is making Sani look like a sissie ride.  It is called Baboons pass.  I could hear it being discussed in length.  I suspect that it might become the next "Koos se Klim".

Bad thing about Lesotho.  No cold beer.  They just dust it off and hand it over.  It was amusing to see how they guard the bottles.

I have not been so scared for a long time.  Doing a bit of the Roof in a Pathfinder .....  EISH ..... Sharkie got stuck in the mud so badly that the bike was standing on its own.  It had to be dragged out with a rope.

Canjora in the car is very entertaining..... "Look, two car wrecks" . . . . "Look that wreck still have its wheels on, must be fresh!"

The site of the Bash was lovely.  Hopefully someone post pics that will do it justice.  Sorry still can't.  No camera and no bonus.  I am working for a distribution company.  Nuff said.

We had a casualty which stubbornly decided to ride home with a broken ankle.  I really hope he get home safely.

Near Marquard we found Pom and WHS with some bike trouble. Hope you guys will be home before dark.

Now waiting for pics..... :mwink: :mwink:

CrazyPorra, I hope you are busy downloading a bucket full of pics.

Waiting... Waiting .....

From the previous posts I‚??m glad to see I‚??m not the only one who is wasted. Hell it was fun. We went to the Bash on Friday, KiLRoy, Welsh and myself, met up with HentieBM and DeonDJ in Ladybrand, got to Wepener, had a few cold ones at the Ford Laser hotel and arrived at the bash spot around 2:30 pm. We kuiered, got motherlessly, and rode home today. Was back here at 12:15, enough time to register to vote. Now battling the urge to go and sleep.

Here‚??s a few of my pics ‚?? too laze to type out a full report.

Somewhere in the freestate

More somewhere in the freestate

Did I mention that we had lotsa rain on Friday morning? Here‚??s Welsh doing some water crossing

With the rain there was little to no dust ‚?? roads were fairly smooth ‚?? great riding:

What a Bash!!!

Firstly,  a huge thank you to Stephan and Red.   I injured my leg last Sunday,  and they were kind enough to fetch me,  cart me around the whole weekend,  and then deliver me to my doorstep.   Not only that,  they tolerated my bad habits (smoking and drinking and talking nonsence).   Thanks again...

I got a lift with my neighbour to Groenie's house on wed pm,  just in time to have a beer with Groenie and DeepBass9,  and to watch them hit the road.   Man,  i was jealous....

Stephan and Red came to fetch me the next morning,  and that's when my Bash really started...   It didn't feel great going to a bike gathering in a Pathfinder,  but at least i'd be there...

Thursday got us to Ramabanta.   We met up with shark_za & Plotties group at the Trading Post.   Much beer was consumed,  and a good kak praat session.

Slept like the dead.

In the morning some fo the guys did roadside repairs before we hit the scenic route suggested by shark.   An entertaining road to say the least.   shark got himself nicely stuck in the mud,  and man power got the KLR out.   My black arse suffered.   My knee wailed too.   After some border post amusement (overly zealous policemen) we cruised the rest of the way to the Bash.   Set up tent and started drinking beer...

We stayed at Ramabanta

There was an acute water shortage, but non-the-less a fantastic stay over

Waiting for Groenie and kie to return from filling up. Turns out they could not get fuel anywhere closeby - so they went an alternative route and we carried on without them

That was the excitment for day 2.....

edit...  8) :mwink:

Oh yes - there was one more thing. Crazy Porra can now also be referred to as "The Mutton Man" - lets just say he met a sheep along the way..... and.... the smell of sheep braai most probably permeated the air in Lesotho that night  ;D

Whew what more can be said - What a great place to have the bash - I thought we were going to have to rough it and my bike was packed accordingly half of the stuff I could have left behind - there was a Spectacular bath, pic's already posted, Ice cold beer on tap constantly. Perfect weather once we got there. Fantastic company - far to much food - Red the potato salad was great!!!

My Friday started at 4am - No way was I going to be late and get left behind - walked outside and seriously considered unpacking the bike and going by car, but my sense of adventure prevailed. A huge back up on the freeway had a few people late for work on Friday fortunatly it was in the opposite direction. Got to the meeting point at 5.45 and had just finished filling up when Leo arrived. A call just after 6 from Cono confirmed he was going to be late so I stayed behind and waited for him and Transporter. We left at 7.52. Took a wrong turn in Sasolburg and Cono lead us up the garden path so to speak - I had a fight with the mud monster in a section of the road all of 5m long - Transporter thanks for getting the bike off my leg and then picking up the bike. I am starting to doubt my ability to ride Delila and on more than one occation wished I was on the KLE. Will need to do some serious time in the saddle on the TA before I am comfortable. We managed to loose Transporter in Ficksburg (I think) when we stopped for Lunch. Cono thanks for keeping me on the Tar on the way there - think the 500km ride gave me a lot of confidence and although very nervous as we turned onto the dirt I managed to keep the bike upright ... Got to the bash and had to stop halfway down the hill and then was to poop scared to take the bike any further and had to get one of the guys to take the bike down for me. Had a major hangover Saturday am and there was no way I was capable of riding so got to perfect my casting as there were no fish biting. For some strange reason most dogs faded rather early Saturday Night.
Woke up this morning around 4.30 to the sound of bikes starting and tents being packed. Managed to persuade one of the guys to take my bike back up the little rocky bit - no way I was going to fall my ass off in front of so many people  ;) Cono took me back on a longer route - Thanks really getting the hang of riding the TA on dirt - Well to be honest the road out was a dirt highway and Cono was good enough to do it slowley to keep me company. THANKS!!!!!!
The rest of the trip was uneventfull and I got home just after 4. Will post some pic's tomorrow.
Thanks to all for making this a great weekend!!!!

Saturday morn, 8h00, me, Biela, LouisX, Haba haba & Milkybar decided to do a quickie to Lundean's neck pass, the quickie turned out to be a 12hr trip, doing 550k's for the day, going up Lundeans, giving in to the temptation of visiting Tiffendell, via Rhodes, Barclay East back, returning to a cheerful basecamp at 20H30. Remember we had to comply with Biela's gomoto , doing 80-100  max. What an awesome  trip, here a lot of pics!

We were so fotrunate to have our bread buttered both sides; doing both the bash and this trip altogether!

Hey all, what an awesome bash this year was. Venue awesome people even better and a LOT of beer was consumed....

I don't have many pics (forgot the camera in the bike hehehe) but will post the few I have later.

I have the meanest sunburn you can imagine.. My shoulders and back are tomato in colour. Respect to LS who rode the DRZ400 all the way from Cape Town.

Popi thanks for the ride down, even though I got soaked leaving PTA on Friday morning. And to AdvMX, Plothond, Popi and Kilroy thanks for the ride back. I think I was pissing and moaning all the way back but can only put that down to maybe a bit of sunstroke and too much alcohol over the weekend.

Thanks all for an awesome bash and the venue was better than it looks in the pics..

This was absolutely one of the best trips that I have been on with riding buddies.

Formalities out of the way:
1.  Kilroy, Wino and the people who put this together, you did an outstanding job.  The location was a piece of paradise and I couldn't have done better myself.
2.  To the guys I rode down to the bash, Plottie and JJred, it was a great ride.   :thumleft:
3.  To all the guys I met at the bash, it was the best crowd of people I could have ever spent a weekend with.  Camaraderie like I have never experienced before.
4.  IDR, for those myprodols when I hurt my back!
5.  My riding friends back home - Funacide, Poppipants, Kilroy and Plottie. :thumleft:

I met many people and it was a privilege to spend the weekend with them.

The ride through Lesotho was magnificent.  Shark, you know your way and the chosen route was a pleasure to ride with all the guys.  Respect LouisXander for riding it with slicks.

Crazy Porra and Myself were the only ones brave enough to camp on the beach till the rest followed.

I didn't take to many photo's - I just forgot totally as I was having to much fun.

:thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft: for an absolutely spectacular weekend!!

I only took 77 photos over the 4 days - just goes to show how photos weren't on the list of priorities at all!

shark_za and I started on Thursday morning EARLY - I was on the road at a smidgeon after 5 - the plan being to shoot down to Lesotho on tar to meet up with Groenie, CrazyPorra and DeepBass9 at the Monantsa border post.  Shark had a bit of a tail light problem, which almost caused me to rear-end him while we were trying to get out of the JHB traffic, so we stopped in a small town.  Hell knows what it was called, I don't remember.

Turns out it was a wire to the light which had dislodged, so a quick repair (after a handful of seperate purchases at the local hardware store) and we were on our way again.  Tar all the way which was a little boring, but the promise of a ride through Lesotho to keep the spirits high.

Finally, arriving at the border post, where the other 3 were awaiting us.  I had a bit of a nervous ride up to the border post, the D606s being brand new, I had to get to grips with the way they grip off road.  Turns out very predictably, and I was EXTREMELY grateful that I didn't fit the Anakee as I was considering.

First beer stop, 5 km into Lesotho  ;D
(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/2063/12zc9.jpg)

And the road down from the border post
(http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/593/13zy2.jpg)

Moving swiftly along, a smoke break (CrazyPorra, shark_za and DeepBass9 in the background)

At this spot
(http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/3537/15uh9.jpg)

And then, after a long ride, with few beer stops as we pushed to get there before dark, we arrived at Ramabanta, to a spectacular setting, cold beer and bobotie for dinner  ;D
(http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/3867/16bq2.jpg)

Plottie and the okes arrived quite late in the dark and the rain, and sidetrack and LouisXander even after that, having ridden to the wrong Ramabanta (there are three) - and you saw earlier what they had to ride through, and LX being on a Strom with slick Anakees.  RESPECT!

Then we were off the next morning with the bash venue as destination.  Lesotho has some truly awesome riding - everything from dirt highways, to technical passes, all surrounded by breathtaking scenery.  Very few photo stops along th eway here too, as it was a rush to get through the mileage needed for the day.

A water crossing, check that Strom move!  :ricky:

Then we all followed Plottie blindly up a climb to a lookout point.  Luckily there was no drop-off at the other end, otherwise there were some Kawasakis and KTMs lying smashed in a ravine in Lesotho  :o  Was wothwhile for the photos though:

Then, arrived at the Bash, unpacked, and got into the beer.  These photos are from both days there.  What a jol! :thumright:

Big party on the first night
(http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/5602/26nt5.jpg)

Firebucket was there
(http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/9886/27xs8.jpg)

shark_za, popipants and Kaboef
(http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/6616/28hj0.jpg)

As was MetalJockey.  I don't know what Kilroy is on about.

And that's about all I have.

Thanks again to all!  It was awesome  O0

I did 1700 k's there and back, most was tar, as time was limited.

Met up with Sot and Luckstricker at Aberdeen on Friday morning.

From there we rode to Nieu-Bethesda to go check out the famous Owl House.
Entrance was R25, so we just looked over the wall like bergies outside a liqour store.

LS showing his distaste for the Orange brand.. notice the monkey butt due to DRZ seat....

Stealing some petrol from Sot's KLR. The DRZ is a very lekker bike, but tank range and seat has to improve somewhat... Me and LS took turns riding it. I really enjoyed it, but everytime I got back on my 1200, I grinned like a pig in shit. Its a couch. Yes. But a f***ing fast one...

Early Saturday morning.
Our tents on the riverbank. The peace of waking up at sunrise next to a flowing river in the crisp morning was soon shattered by the crisp sound of beers being opened.

Our fearless leader practicing the subtle art of making a sandy ditch look like a couch.

IDR looking smug after covering us all in sand with his spinning back wheel.
And LS showing his sore thumb. ;D

Welshie comtemplating having another beer.

But settled on fetching firewood from the far side of the river instead. Camelwelsh.

More wood arriving.

LS riding the DRZ. I think he might have broken the record for the longest distance ever on a DRZ.. Maximum respect. 8)

Crossing the Orange river close to the Gariep dam.

We were caught in a moerse thunderstorm just outside Colesberg.
We were soaked, but a nice Wimpy breakfast sorted us out.
Here we then split up, with me taking the N9 home to George.

A last piccie just outside Uniondale.

The mood was relaxed and wonderful, and everyone had a great time.

Have to agree with Kaboef.

To be honest I am sure that is why it was such a great success, we drank loads and at no stage did any one endanger himself or others lifes, so to all the Wilddog members that where there I suggest that you give yourselfs a pat on the back.

I made sure I rode the 450 BMW when I got there and was still sober. Then parked the bikes and kuired with my mates.

For me the bash is about meeting up with old friends that you haven't seen in a while and having a relaxed weekend. The key is left in the bike until I pack up and leave for home. Yes we drank a bit  but it wasn't hooligan stuff and was more about good funny stories, war stories of trips done this year and life in general.   (Much like the forum as it was when it started.)

What a nice group of people.....

All in all a great trip. I left on weds afternoon with Groenie, and met up with Crazy Porra at Heidelberg. We then went through to Golden Gate. The next morning we met up with Shark_za et al and rode through to Ramabanta through some excellent dirt riding. Lesotho is one continuous mountain pass. The next day myself, Groenie and JJRed were a bit low on fuel, so we went via Maseru and a number of shebeens to the bash. The pictures below are the campsite, and a birds eye view from the mountain. My bike was going very badly the whole time so thanks to everyone who pushed/dragged it into life in the morning!

YES!  ;D

I also agree - was a great bash and such a mellow afternoon on the beach!

Adv MX started the mud slinging which ended in a "VanStadens Spa" experience, Hah! ::)

Anyways, Saturday spent just chilling and surrounded by great people and scenery was well worth it and we needed it - for some of us, the bikes were parked on Friday and only started again on Sunday morning! No cell reception made it even more relaxing!

Thanks to all the organisers for the great venue (and to Plottie for the last minute direction for us on the way up from PE) - would have really enjoyed the Lesotho trip - it looks superb! Thanks to all that attended and made it a great few days! ;)

I got home....

some WD's said "what happens at the Bash stays at the Bash", strange that the WD's who told me that has already posted a number of interesting stories, including visual evidence.

Right now, my mind is blank and will most probably be until the next Bash.
It may be alcohol poisoning.

Glad to see no-one has mentioned my grand arrival. Ride all the way from JHB, get to the Bash and as I am about to drop into the gathering, I go and drop my bike infront of all the WD's.
And as always, it was the fault of a "cage driver' leaving to rescue our fallen mate somewhere on the road.

Awesome weekend, awesome people, awesome bikes, awesome ride.

It is a known fact that WD's take photo's and publish for the world to see, but believe me, if the WD's could record what was being said in and around the camp over those 3 days, create a audio CD/DVD and sell this, it will be the hottest product to hit the shelves around the world.

The boys from the Cape have a skill at telling stories and jokes that Casper De Vries could not even dream about.

I will be editing my video's later this evening and will post some clips and photo's.

To those I have just gotten to know at the WD Bash, I'll allow you to ride with me anyday or should I say fall.

Keep the stories and photo's coming.

Jeez - must include this - never knew it was that bad....

Quote
Man drowns after FS storm
10/11/2008 17:26  - (SA)

Bloemfontein - A man has drowned and another was still missing on Monday after heavy rains hit the Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu areas in the Free State.

Police spokesperson Inspector Harry Nagel said police were still looking for a man who was apparently swept away by water near the Rustfontein Dam, east of Bloemfontein.

"One drowned, one was swept away and one made it to land."

Hundreds of houses in Botshabelo and neighbouring Thaba Nchu were damaged when heavy rains and strong winds hit the area on Sunday afternoon.

Many informal dwellings were also destroyed.

Mangaung local municipality spokesperson Qondile Khedama said disaster management teams were by Monday afternoon still on the ground to assess the situation.

"We will help those who do not have accommodation for tonight. The city manager has said that blankets and mattresses will be supplied to those at community halls."

Khedama said reports of damage had been streaming in throughout the day.

"People continued to come in through(out) the day."

The weather office in Bloemfontein has forecast more downpours for Monday (60%) and Tuesday (30%) for the Bloemfontein area.

Ok guys! Here's our contribution........
First of all......thanks to all the organisers and sponsors! What a great weekend!
A special word of thanks to HabaHaba for his patience during my stressfull and nerveracking first encounter with gravel!!! No wonder I love this bloke soooo much!! He's so relaxed and peacefull....
Thanks Groenie, Deepbase and JJ for your help in picking up my bike 2 along the way......This rookie really appreciates your help.

So let me start at the beginning.....
We finished packing only on Friday morning and still had to go to work. when you're your own boss, the business of business usually has to be sorted out before one can leave for the weekend and because I was so nervous about tackling the unknown, I played for time. DeonDJ actually phoned at one stage to find out where we where. To his shock he had to hear that we're still working.
Only got to leaving at 12h32 - not too far to ride - only 298km to Van Stadensrus!!!!
After a quick milkshake in Bloemfontein we headed out to Dewetsdorp and then Wepener. Nice long straight strech of road.
Arriving at Van Stadensrus I saw this little house covered in roses-made me think of "Doringrosies'" home from the fairytale......
OK I know some of you guys are laughing your hearts out!!! I'm a romantic, so shoot me!!!
This rookie now had to get onto gravel for the very first time (not pillioning) but in control of my own - newish Dakar!!! No training, just hubby coaching me through every sandpatch and turn.
It's defnitely not the same as opening up the throttle of the Fazer on the open road!!! Totally different!!!
At some point we took awrong turn but luckily met up with Groenie and company. Stopping uphill
and trying to turn the bike around resulting in me toppling it twice.
Groenie gave some inpromto instructions and off we went. Every now and then he would stop, show me to stop next to him and say " Stop woman, switch off the bike and listen to me woman......." Thanks Groenie!!! You rock Boet!!!
We got to the bridge near the camp and had to stop for a break again. The 3 musketeers was in need of little thirstquencing!!!
While relaxing on the bridge Rassie and company arrived with the news that Rassie fell and they think he broke it. This guy actually rode his bike from Worcester and near the bash had the nasty fall. He was so white in his face from the pain, I thought he might collapse. He got onto his 800 GS again and took of to the bash! OUCH!!!!
We got going again and boy oh boy!!! What waited for me I kinda expected but wishes would not come, but it did......veld and rocks. I don't think I ever prayed so hard in my life. And when I saw every one waiting along the veldpaadjie for the arrivals, I was concentrating on not falling in front of the guys.
Thanks Deon for taking th Dakkie down the last bit!
Meeting some of the dogs was quite interesting - some of you guys really do not fit your avatars, but what the heck! It was great meeting some of you!
Saturday morning just after 5'o clock a scream in the morning woke me and nearly gave me a heartattack.
Hahahahaha!!!
Remind me to think twice next time Willem has a great plan like this.
Filled up in Zastron on Coke, cookies, water and Lays chips for the humans and some petrol for the bikes, we headed out in search of Lundeans Neck Pass.
We had to stop at the bridge crossing the Orange river for some nice scenery. We have a lovely country, but boy, we are in desperate need of rain.
Then just before Sterkspruit Willem turned onto the gravelroad and the fun began.
I'll let the pics tell the rest of the story.
HabaHaba slid on some cement and you've seen the results on Willem report. Shoulder and knee still stiff, but otherwise I think we were lucky. Getting up an seeing the whole front wheel over the edge of the cliff, I realised that if I was the one in control, it might have ended differently, but thank God, all was ok!!!
Lundeans Neck pass was followed by a steep trip up the road to Tiffendale. It was cold up there, and we only had our summer jackets for the weekend. The road from Tiffendale took us down a steep descent and into Rhodes. A little town caught up in town. The last time I saw a phonebooth like that wa about 25 years ago. The snow boots caused quite a discussion around what nice bikeboots they would make. The coffee was so nice after the chill we felt after spending the last 2 hours above 2500feet.
Hitting the tar just outside Barkley east we realised that time flew by so quickly, we really could not waste any more time.
Hitting the way back we saw the clouds and thunder in the distance, and although we need the rain desperately I prayed for it not to rain until we got back safely to the bashsite.
At just about 20h30 we stopped the bikes at the campsite and realised we've done 550km for the day. Time for dinner and bed!!!!!
Sunday morning we were about the last ones to pack up and leave for home. Breakfast had to wait till Bloemfontein. The weather looked scary so we decide to head straight home. With the wind from the front we could only average 130km/h.
Arrived home at 12h35 - about 1150km in 48 hours!!
Oh and by the way, the way out from the bash and gravel wasn't so bad. I averaged 80km/h!!!
Maybe next time Groenie, I'll be keeping up with you at 180km/h. Hahahhaha.....

Just some "highlights" to add to the posts of my riding partners, Kaboef (part of the way) and LS (all the way). Before LS and I left CT on what turned out to be a 2323 km trip in three days. LS mentioned this may become an epic. He was going to be riding the DRZ most of the time. In the end it may not have been an epic in the truest sense of the word, but nevertheless quite eventful. Some ' highlights':

Day One: Making Aberdeen in the dark a dirt road after LS pissed off the good burghers of Rietbron by getting his words all wrong and telling a guy his town is filled with ruins. Presumably lost the KLR's tool tube (with nice expensive bloody tyre levers in, on that stretch. The DRZ (8 l tank) ran out of petrol for the first time and in the dark. Helped it with some juice from the KLR (for the first time). Partied a bit with the farmers at the local watering hole before they all got up and left when a local politician walked in. The politician was back early morning to look for his cellphone.

Day Two: Meeting up with Kaboef, great to see him again. Visited the outside of the Uilhuis, saw some lovely scenery on our way there, bought each of the wives a little cement owl. Was following LS and Kaboef on a dirt road some time later when I cut across the sandy middelmannetjie around a corner, the front washed out and the KLR bounced on its right before coming to rest on its left side.

At the same time LS and Kaboef disappeared from view and Kaboef got stung by a bee in the neck. LS did an emergency pulling out of the sting thing. Then they started talking to a farmer who had stopped and they were not coming back. Eventually managed to wrestle the heavily laden beast to its feet and started off in pursuit as they returned to look for me. Five minutes of high drama.

Bought stuff in Bethulie when the KLR would not start. Turned out to be a fuse that was dislodged in the fall. Uneventful until we got to the bash where I dropped the bike from a standing position while surveying the scene.

Camped on the beach and had a great first night party.

Day Three: Had a great time seeing old connections, meeting new ones and listening to running commentary provided by KilRoy on matters as diverse as straight sex, how to procreate to specify gender, gay sex and so on. Had an extended afternoon nap which turned into evening which made me miss the prize giving. Woke up "refreshed" and hungry for the braai. Pace yourself better, next time, fool.

Day Four: Trying to get out of zombie state by making coffee. Found the coffee had mixed with cement from owl in fall. Not feeling like getting kidney stones. Byted vas until we got to the Wimpy in Colesberg (drenched). Kaboef split towards George and LS and I carried on in the rain, going straight down the N1 because we wanted to make home.

Out of utter, utter stupidity we both ran out of petrol 12k's before Leeu-Gamka. Got lucky when a guy with a lawnmower on the back of his bakkie stopped and offered us a litre from the lawnmower which LS gracefully split. Layed the KLR down on the tap's side to get at the juice stuck on the other side of the tank and made it to the pumps.

Refuelled for the last time in De Doorns after coming down the Hex in the face of the setting sun and had even said our farewells when the DRZ coughed a spluttered to a halt 3 k's before the Huegenot tunnel with a minor mechanical problem that was nof fixable right there and then. LS's dutiful and pretty wife came to pick him and the DRZ up with a bakkie.

We were sitting in the dark, waiting for her while watching the Sunday night traffic flashing past. "Epic, indeed", I said to LS reminding him of his comment at the start of the trip. "It's not epic, it's a bloody disaster," het retorted.

The next day we felt a lot better.

Perhaps you can more accurately qualify that to "Now that you know how we behave at a bash, you can decide whether you want to join a bash or not"

Or are you perhaps suggesting that someone that does not drink and who does not like parties (for whatever reason) is in some way not qualified to be a wilddog and, therefore, not welcome on the forum?

So many positive things at the Bash, but the one pic is causing a debate.

Part of friendship is understanding and accepting them the way they are.  My friend was walking with the wobbliest legs I have ever seen and he peed in the river.  But then he is the guy who worked through the night to build me luggage racks for my bike.

Should he be shot now?  I am not the pee police.

No, that's not the point. I don't like the fact that such a pic of me was posted, but it was done as a joke and I can accept it as such (as long as it gets removed some time soon)

To qualify as a WD, you need an interest in adventure/DS riding, that's all. To qualify for attending the bash, you need to be a WD. That's all.

Oh, a thickish skin and an open mind is required to some extent as well. This is the internet after all.

No, let me put it more accurately. There are many members here, and the fact that we all are adventure/dual sport riders does not mean that we all subscribe to the same notion of what is fun or proper and what is not.I would guess that we all are mature well adjusted adults to function in society, but to be highly critical of some lads letting their hair(pants) down in a social setting among friends is a bit short sighted. So, your choice who you want to spend your free time with.

Pics like those tells me I'm among people who don't frown at everything and walk around with stiff upper lips, and my guess is that will draw in many more people than it would alienate. So, you can choose to spend your weekend with a bunch of guys like that, or maybe your idea of fun is tea and cucumber sandwiches at the bridge club.

I know where I would rather be.....

PS first paragraph in answer to Kykdaar, second one for BP.

PPS I changed my forum name because I thought Disselboom might just be a little juvenile, guess I'll be changing it back.

I have braaied next to you without drinking a drop myself (Ok, plenty of coke) and never was that an issue (for you or me), nor did it diminish the enjoyment of our social interaction.

Im slightly dissapointed that people would ruin a ride report, the sharing of great memories - for which we should be thankfull as we were to slapgat to go - with grievances about photographs.

Surely if its such an issue it could privately (PM) be raised with the necessary authorities , where said issue could be resolved discreetly without messing up this RR!

Like I said, it looked like an awesome bash, and i for one am thankfull to those who shared it with us!

Just a few last words on the pissing pic and the mud slinging that followed it.

I think the comments were actually aimed at the poster of the pic, not the pisser in the pic. Haven't you ever pissed in a river? You should try it, at least once. The pic can't show the context of the event and like Shark said, it was quite funny at the time. And that is most probably why the poster, who is btw. a very good friend of mine, put it up.

Yes, you may or may not agree with stuff like that, BUT that and the drinking should not put you off joining a bash. At all 3 I've attended, there were a few non-drinkers and they all agreed that was an experience of note to attend one of these events.

So, feel free to join us or not at the next one, which will be held in November next year at Boegoeberg se dam.....

Only WD's will be welcome.

Excuse my ignorance but is that place you camped open to anybody or a special arrangement for the bash.Reason I ask is some friends and I are heading in that direction around 16th Dec. and it looks like a good place to stay to some of the passes like Lundins Nek etc.We also want to do some Lesotho rides. If anybody can enlighten me I would be greatfull.

After sweating through some very late nights to get the Dr.Big running in time, Pom & I left from my house at about 7:00am on Friday morning. After fighting our way through the rain & rush hour traffic we headed out to Oranjeville

After a fairly uneventful trip via Frankfort & Reitz we stopped at Bethlehem. After a refuel and a nice Wimpy breakfast, we popped into the local Mica to replace a fairing bolt on the DR which had worked it‚??s way loose en route ‚?? all fixed for 70c .We also stopped at the nearest bike shop , which happened to be a Yamaha dealer, where the appy tightened up the steering stem nut which had started to loosen up ‚?? this was to happen repeatedly over the weekend & made sand riding rather entertaining.

We headed off for a leisurely cruise past Fouriesburg, Ficksburg & then stopped outside Ladybrand for a drink & some biltong . We also stopped for 15 mins in Hobhouse just to say we‚??d been there ‚?? it‚??s one of those one horse towns where the horse died 15 years ago.

After a grub & fuel stop in Wepener we headed off to Vanstadensrus where we hooked up with Groenie & mates . A bit later Crazyporra, A-MX & Plottie joined us

At the shebeen in Vanstadenrus with Groenie , Deepbase9, JJRed, Stephan & Red.
Thanks for the Zamalek

After some lovely gravel, we found the turn off to the bash At this point I was on my own after a last minute phone call to the family (no cell reception at the bash site). As I hit the first little donga on the farm track my homemade luggage rack snapped clean in half. I rode the last few 100 metres of farm track to the campsite holding the luggage rack, luggage & rear fender clear of the rear wheel with my left hand. The last little rocky bit was,  er‚?¶interesting.

On Saturday morning Pom decided he needed new brake pads.  And so, after doing a Long Way Round trick with some tyre levers & cable ties to my luggage rack, we headed off on dirt to Bloemfontein to find a bike shop for Pom & a guy with a welder for me. We came very close to having a sheep encounter as 4 or 5 sheep were scared out of the long grass & ran right in front of us - luckily no harm done.

On our way back we avoided the dirt & stopped off at the ‚??Ford Laser‚?Ě in Wepener & had a fantastic lunch.

We arrived back at the campsite to find a bunch of seriously sun burned & happy Wild Dogs doing what they do best ‚?? talking kark !

We enjoyed a lovely evening of prize giving (thanks sponsors), braaing & talking 7 kinds of shite & headed off to our tents

On Sunday we left at about 7 & headed off towards Tweespruit where we stopped for gas & a cooldrink. After Tweespruit we headed off the tar to take the lekker dirt short cut to Winburg via Marquard.

I think the hectic rattling about on the dirt caused the float in the left hand carb bowl to stick & the DR came to a stop in the middle of nowhere ‚?? flooded. Pom came cruising past, he thought I‚??d stopped to fiddle with my luggage. All my frantic hooting & arm waving didn‚??t help me & he rode on by.

With no idea of how to fix the problem & no cell reception I decided I‚??d better start pushing.

When Pom eventually came back to find me, it wasn‚??t long before Stephan , Red & Ganjora came along in the Pathfinder & lent us their tow rope. We tried a few kms of peg to peg towing (which is hairy on dirt with fully loaded bikes) & then decided to leave the bike at a farm house. Just then Cono & Cavegirl came by & offered moral support.

All the farm houses were empty  & so we had to think of another plan. We tried a few more km of towing & then called it quits. Luckily Pom‚??s engineering brain finally kicked in & he managed to drain the float bowl & we were soon back on our way.

Barring one small mishap outside just Vredefort where  I ran out of petrol (doh !), the rest of the trip was uneventful & we made it home by late afternoon in the West Rand‚??s thick mist & fog.

Thanks to all for a superb weekend  !

I think we must hold the record for this - over 200km in Namibia.
We actually got it waxed and cruised along at a "leisurely" 85km odd / hour

Picked up the KLR from workshops late Thursday afternoon. Got home and fitted by home-made top box, loaded uo late in the evening, got to bed at about 2am Friday morning. Up at 5am to meet with caveGirl and other riders at Blockhouse. Never reached first point. Ran out of petrol about 2km from Brakenhurst. Workshop had tap on "reserve". You get a bike from the workshop and you expect it to run 100%. Don't forget service mechanics do not fill your bike with juice. OK...so it was raining very, very, very hard hard, when I made the call to tell CaveGirl they should move along as I had plotted the route on the GPS and would catch up with the Blockhouse Bang a little along the way. Pushed the bike, the very heavy bike to the petrol station in Brackenhurst and filled up. Got to Blockhouse and found alot of bikes there,. Sissies looked scared to ride in the rain. We heard that Transporter was still somewhere between Blockhouse, Kempton Park & Alberton.  Leon and the gang left, leaving CaveGirl and myself to wait for Transporter. A hellave long time later Transporter arrives and we start up to move out.

Sasolburg: GPS screwed me around and went in a circle and then onto gravel / mud side road. we i looked back there was no one following me. No head lights anywhere. Within 10 meters I had lost CaveGirl and Transporter, from pulling onto the gravel mud road. Turned back to find Transporter picking up CaveGirls heavily packed Transalp from the mud. The girl lost it on a mud patch of less than 30cm's. Call that bad luck or what. Move out again and eventually I ignored the GPS and went on basic instinct, with Transporter at the back giving his nod of approval.

Bloody hell, Transporter is a busy business man, dropping off from the back of the 3-some every-so-often, to take business calls, while he was having trouble with his headset. He said for us to go ahead as he would catch up. It was a big decision to just leave a WildDog on his own along the ride. It was getting late and I was starving.

Ficksburg: Rode around the town circle, stopped at Wimpy, had the Wimpy Burger and milkshake. Went to look for a Auto-Electrian (Spikes) to check out the power supply from the bike to GPS. Great guy Spikes was, looking like he would love to ride with the WildDogs to the bash. He gave me a 2amp  fuse for the GPS power supply and never even charged me for it. OK...the power supply to the GPS still did not work and I did not have the strength unpack and repack the bike just to check wiring under the sheet. CaveGirl had gone to look for a Midas to get more tie downs for the heavy load of luggage.
Transporter was called on his cell and was invited for lunch at the Wimpy, but by the looks of it he was now moving so fast to catch us, that he passed right through Ficksburg, before we had even ordered our meal. That left CaveGirl and myself to press ahead on our own.

The wind was no doubt blowing us around the road after leaving Ficksburg and CaveGirl was hanging on for dear life, trying not to lose her luggage. Tent, shower, portable toilet and God only knows what else she had loaded. Like only a girl will know how to pack for a trip. I noted the looks of amusement whenever we stopped and she removed her helmet at the various stops. A girl riding a bike bigger than herself and packed even higher with luggage. It just goes to show, WildDogs are a varied breed of riders, looking for the ultimate adventure. In my case, it's the amazing feeling from get out under my bike after a fall, which is regular, knowing that I have no broken bones and another day to ride.

Coming closer to our destination, we discovered that there was still about 40km to cover over dirt to get to camp. CaveGirl said for us to get on with it.....so we tried to ride at 10km/h along the gravel. It was now almost about 17:30pm and the GPS battery was almost dead. I needed to ride faster to make sure that the GPS battery will hold out until we found the farm gate entrance. About 5km before the spot, a couple of WD's came screaming past us at about 120km/h along the dirt road. Show off's on BMW's and KTM's. I speeded up trying to watch there dirt trail to see where they would turn off the road. As fast as those WD's came screaming past, they also disappeared ahead of us.

Arrive at gate, OK, actually rode past it, because I never saw the WildDog Logo stuck to the gate. I turned back because CaveGirl had stopped at the gate. A couple of guys came rushing out on their way to the bridge and pointed out the tracks to the river. Being on the road all day was a great acheivement and then we past the most vital equipment at the bash. Yes,,,,there sticking out bright white reflected against the dropping sun, were two beautiful white toilets, way up on the hill. Damn, this Bash was going to be done in style. White toilet paper was wrapped around trees leading down the path, a small incline for most riders and a scary objective for others. Rushing up the hill was a bakkie with trailer and Shark_ZA shouting his welcome. Never knew he was so excited to be seeing me. I pulled over to the side for the bakkie to climb the incline and fck, i go and drop my bike in front of everyone. But you must admit it was a grand entrance for a grand weekend.
The bakkie sped away to go rescue our fallen WD's. So the shouting was not really my welcome party, it was to get me out of the way, because of the emergency. Talk about a bursting ego and I will describe it in a bright red manner.

OK....so what is a RR without photo's. Groenie and Lucky Strike, both swell guys. Last ride with the WD's in De Wildt, Groenie was my hero. He felt very sorry, for the KLR rider who kept falling. Bloody record of about 9 falls in one day....but i was a stubborn bastard riding without a back break after tghe cylinder had broken.

It is without question or doubt that I will now start preparing for the next WildDog Annual Bash. A warm Thank You to all who organized the Bash.
It was a great venue, the barmen were always friendly, the toilet seats were warm and toilet paper was fresh. The braai-pack was excellent, red's patato salad was the best, beers were always cold and conversation interesting and the jokes and stories, well if you want to hear them, make sure your at the next WildDog Bash.

Great stuff Cono...., yes your entrance was grand, right in front as you say, myself and HentieBM gave you 10 for the dismount, 8,5 for the roll that ensued, 10 for the quick stand to salute next to your bike ;D
You recovered well from the fall and it was a difficult little rocky road especially the last rock ledge leading into the camp.
Yes Cavegirl did good in the riding that freight train, by the way where is the Transporter, heard nothing from him, wonder if he is still wondering about the tailgunner story? >:D
Yes Sot is an interesting guy, he must put his ride report on the WD site.

At Last!!  After a hectic week complete with car trouble, 3 days in Secunda and miscellaneous  :pot: , I have a chance to add to the thread.

Packed and ready  :ricky: :ricky:

HHHusky, Das and I made our way through a particularly wet and crappy Gilooly's to meet for breakfast at the Blockhouse.

After some seating difficulties in the Wimpy (that won't be mentioned)  ::), we left down the R59 and beyond.  Along the way

Cooldrink break at the Rosendal Metropolis

In Wepener, HHHusky discovered that his not-so-dry-red had gone walkies in the topbox :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer:

Arrived at the bash and set up camp

Next day, HHHusky, Das, Sidetrack and I set off on a roundabout-follow-the-gravel trip

HHHusky's steed got tired, and lay down.  The gravel indicates the nature of the fight between steed and WD

We arrived back at the Camp to be greeted by our neighbour (bottle evidence later proved to be planted)

Since I had taken pics of HHHusky's skidmarks, he felt it only right to take some of mine  :patch:

Difference is, his are visible for all to see.

There have already been many prize-giving pics, so we'll skip that, except

And Leo doing some ass-checking of his own  :imaposer:

The entrance to the camp

On the way home, we stopped at a Sandstone building marked on the track that Leo sent me  :thumleft:

Das and Sidetrack....  Wait, that's not right   ???

Church in Linley

Nice gravel farm road just before the tar wilderness

All in all, an excellent weekend.  Amazing how people with extremely diverse convictions and opinions can just gel around one thing - DS biking.

I also learnt on the way down to the bash, that an expensive rainsuit can leak just as well as a cheap one  :dousing:

One last thought for the following very special group of people:

.....not forgetting Adventurer and Wino and Sot.

I had a chat with Journeyman after the prizegiving, and he explained the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the forum.  I had no idea the amount of time, effort and energy that goes into moderating the forum, and keeping it on track.  It really is a passionate labour of love for these guys, and often a thankless one.  Family time etc., is all sacrificed for the forum, i.e. us.  Dunno how to properly thank you guys, but it really is appreciated.  :3some: :3some: :3some: :3some:
