Title: So who wants a Sidecar ?
Post by: Gérrard on February 28, 2020, 12:58:24 pm
There must be others that share my passion, but just cannot do it themselves and rigs are usually expensive. I had so much fun building mine, I want to build more, but I need to know there is a chance someone will buy them.

Put up your hand. I do not intend building on order, but once done it will go for sale. He whose name is at the top of the list gets first choice.

I'm still doing R&D on my car and once I'm happy, intend having it homologated and then register as a builder. I will use only 1150's. I'm busy with costing, but hope to sell a registered rig for under R150k. It won't have the refinements like mine, like an electric linear suspension actuator, but it will have manual adjustable suspension, and be built to receive one if you choose etc. The intension is to keep cost down give you a basic rig you can still enjoy and add refinements as you please.

With time allowed, and once I have my jigs sorted, I can probably build two a year. I' not doing it too make money but simply because I can and I love it. A bespoke sidecar.

Lets see if there is interest.

Klink gaaf, ek glo daar is 'n aanvraag.   :thumleft:  :thumleft:

To give some perspective. You will not be getting a cheap rig at the cost of sacrificing safety and sound construction, but an affordable one.

Example. I spared no expense at building mine and there was a lot of waste because of R&D. Had I bought Coxswain's 1150 (which I'm still crying over) for R40k and, counting all the cost of my sidecar, I would still be making a small profit if it would sell at R130k.

Dis 'n proses.

Die ding is ook. Dis nie streng gesproke 'n kommersiële oefening nie.

So ses maande.

Hopefully and finally I'll get my bike back today and put my sidecar together again. Then some more testing and R&D. Last week the Prentjietekenaar and I got together to take measurements and draw up the plans for my design. Then its loads of paperwork to get it homologated and registered.

We'll get there. With self imposed isolation, there's going to be lots of workshop time

Can't tell you much yet. Plan is still on track but hampered by lockdown. Getting metal this week and starting on the next frame. I'm not building on order, as I don't want to be under pressure. Still also need to get my plans approved that I can sell certified rigs.

When done I will let you know. You first on the list.

:patch:

With my intention of building and selling sidecars, I thought I'd do some feedback for those interested. My 1150 sidecar has now done 10 000km.

This weekend to the FS bash was its final road test. Going there I had a 110kg passenger. The last stretch to the bash was gravel. Initially I rode it gingerly dodging the bumps and ruts. Then I decided WTF and bombed it, if its going to break it must break. Leaving the bash I was on my own on the gravel and gas it a bit. Its a different beast on gravel to keep under control but fun.

Then came eastern FS potholes. After a while I gave up dodging it and just ploughed through at least trying not to hit donga's with the bike. It was rough ride.

I'm now happy my build is strong that I can sell it with confidence. In the next month or so I'm going to strip it and have the frame x-rayed to see if anything shows up. Just for the hell of it and money in the bank.

:deal:

In the next week or two I should be ready to start fitting my first for sale car to a bike. I need a bike. To those that have shown interest, contact me, or anyone else.

Dit sal ons 'n maand of twee besig hou.

Daar is geen haas.

Whilst attending the reveal of the R18 at BMW Umhlanga, I took a few pics of a R9T with sidecar on display, not a BMW product, apparently built by a crowd in Richardsbay
